I was diagnosed with HBP in 2003, only after I had a stroke. My BP was 210/198. I had a horrible headache for 8 days straight. I had to work to support my family. So when the pharmacist said I had to go to a doctor or the ER. I went to the doctor next door. He said I needed to take a pill + HCTZ daily for the rest of my life. I was put first on Losartan. After about 5 years I was switched to Lisinopril with HCTZ for about 5 years due to the issue this doctor mentioned. But, I've been back on Losartan with HCTZ for the last few years. I test my BP daily before taking my pills. Today my reading on my wrist cuff was 145/80. Yesterday it was 128/78.
Listen to your doctor. Take the medicine, it beats having a life threatening stroke. My stroke was bad in so many ways, yet in the long-run it saved my life. It will be 20 years in August. I have gotten to see all 3 children graduate high school. 2 college graduations. Now there are 7 grandchildren. All of which I would have missed if the pharmacist hadn't insisted I go immediately to the doctor.

Finally my Dr asked me did i want to start on low dosage Losartan 25mg to protect me from stroke and heart attack. So I started it and so far the last 5 months my bp has been excellent. I guess i inherited the blood pressure problem from my parents and just have to accept it. So far so good

Thank you for posting this. I've been on Losartan for 4-5 years now, and while the doctor who prescribed it first was very good about explaining things, she didn't have time to explain exactly how this medication works. While I'm not a medical professional my self, most of my family members are, so I grew up hearing medical terminology on a regular basis, and the mechanics of how medicines work is of interest to me. But the most valuable part of your presentation, for me at least, is the info about drug interactions.

Losarten k+ gave me profound fatigue, very rapid heart rate, sweating. And my BP was never consistently good or bad. Have switched to Monopril for Afib but the great thing that happened is the profound fatigue almost entirely has gone.....after 10 years of telling anyone who could hear me, doctors included, that I felt I was dying every day. So, if I hadn't developed Afib, I'd still be taking that crap probably and dragging myself every step I took. Fate.

I kept getting chest pain when I take this. I go to the ER after waiting there for 10 hours they found nothing wrong. Then I read Losartan can cause chest pain I quit taking it within a few days I felt better the chest pain was gone. I was obese I lost weight exercised and my BP went down without any drugs. It took lot of work wasn't easy. I changed doctors also the previous doctor wanted to keep me on BP meds didn't want to let me try and get it down with exercise. I never had any chest pains again after that.

I have anxiety driven BP. AT the dentist or doctor, it can reach as high as 240/140. Soon as I get home and relax, 145/90. Sometimes it's 120/80. If I've been keeping up with my cardio, my BP will run 112/65. It's been like this for decades. Decided to go on losartan to keep my BP from spiking that high. Been on 50mg for a month, went to dentist, 245/132. Got back in truck after appointment, 130/85. Now I'm at 100mg. We'll see how that works. And I'm keeping an eye on my BP to make sure it doesn't drop too much.

I was taking 5 mg of Amlodipine and my cardiolgist changed me to Lisinopril 20 mg, after a few weeks it felt like my chest was caving in. I called him and went back to amlodipine. I decided to change my daily habits of eating less sugar and carbs & add walking. I lost 30 lbs and now take 1/2 of the 5mg. Avg. about 120/78 /65, resting BPM 54-58. Unfortunately I have had a couple of spikes to 160 /85 and then I take a Lisinopril and it gets me back down and the next day it is back to normal. I am 70 + years old.

He tried lisinopril (couldnt take) , lasortin (couldnt take) amlodipine no problem, still taking, along with atenolol chlor still taking. I think adding a third drug is just too much. Lasortin makes me dizzy no matter when I take it. He is going to be mad when I tell him I quit it but I feel much better without it. Im 70 and work on my feet 6 hrs a day, 5 days a week. Thank you Doc for the education......I am about 20 lbs overweight. My blood pressure increases (BP)) when i am in route to the physician. The increase can be as much as 30-50 pts; i.e., 120/77--150/ 100 if not higher. My personal rite-aid blood pressure machine is just as frightening as it fluctuates as well. I am sooo tired of the fluctuations and what i define as madness; BP 150/130 Rx meds, before leaving the Dr., BP slowing decreasing; by the time i get home-some what normal; take the meds. BP reading 88/66 blah blah blah ... I will lose the extra weight as this will stop the skew madness. Truly sick of it !!

What if? Sounds like you have white coat syndrome. You might benefit from breathing exercises prior to each doctor visit. Breath deep through the nose, gradually exhale via the mouth. About 30 reps should calm you sufficiently to have a decent visit with your family practitioner. (I was an employee of the best medical school phone center for over 14.5 years & learned this technique during a severe anxiety attack while at work.)

Jesse.. It's possible that you're not allergic to Losartan but instead having a reaction called Hyperkalemia. That's when your body has too much potassium. Losartan can increase the level of potasium with your body. By eating foods rich in potasium, like potatoes and tomatoes, you are increasing the level of potassium even higher. That can produce various other problems. Look up Hyperkalemia for more detailed info.
