Good Afternoon thonny, i was wondering you make you own pompano jigs or you buy them, it because over here in Puerto Rico, i use live Shrimp o Frozen Shrimp o Squid o balihu o live Sardine n there some look like sardine but it call green back
Where can I get those jigs? My local store is Tampa fishing outfitters but I can find those bob jigs does st Pete outfitter sell big bibs teasers and jigs?
I have a similar Spyderco that I take fishing with me. I think it’s the Native Salt or H1, but it’s supposed to be rust proof and it hasn’t rusted on me yet in the surf!
Question. When using a pompano jigg do you need to add a weight above it a sinker or is that not necessary ? It seems it would Be hard to cast with just a jig it’s so light weight
Good question! You don’t need to add any weight as they already come weighted. The main thing is to have the right rod and reel combo. I would recommend 7ft rod medium action paired up with 3000 size reel with 10lb braid and run a couple foot of 20lb flouro leader. You can tie the jig off by using a loop knot.
What weight pompano jigs do you use? I noticed some of the pompano jigs come preassembled with a split ring. Thoughts on those? I assume it has the same affect as the circle knot. I’m a northeast guy and spent a few months down there. Learned a lot about the SW fishery thanks to you content. MUCH appreciated man.

Great video. I’m new to saltwater and am intrigued by this lure. I see the Doc’s and Bob’s online and the Buccaneer Wiggler in tackle shops. They all look the same to me. Are the Bob’s and Doc’s better or can you tell any difference in the varying brands? BTW I learned a lot watching your jigging technique. Thanks
@@Thonny Thanks. I won’t take the time here but have an incredibly funny story regarding the first time I ever saw these lures “AND” my first Pompano as well.
South west side of JP . Nice area.. I usually have my fly the opposite of how your rigging it so either way the fish hits from you have a hook facing it. Any reason your rigging yours that way?
When I tied them on the opposite they tend to helicopter and it twists up my braid. It might just be me 🤷♂️. Other than that it should work either way!
This might be a stupid question but when I jig for pompano, people always say to let it touch the bottom but I never feel that I touched the bottom any tips?
Easily the most underrated lure. It catches everything and is inexpensive especially if you make your own teasers. You don’t have to be an expert at tying flies to make these. When there are Smacs around I usually slow down my jigging to save on some cut offs. Experiment with different color combinations as some colors are better than others on any given day. You don’t know until you try other combinations.
