      It wasn't a cliffhanger persay, but the angel of death definitely set up the final movie with his speech to Liz, and they totally were setting up for little hellboy fire babies at the end there. I would've loved a movie where they've left the BPRD behind and are fighting monsters on their own

  • @victorsixtythree
    @victorsixtythree 5 месяцев назад +26

    I think Abraham giving the last piece of the crown to Prince Nuada to save the princess mirrors Liz's decision to save Hellboy over saving the World ("So child, make the choice. The world or him.") Also, as Abe says "You would do the exact same for Liz." Seems to be a theme.

    • @victorsixtythree
      @victorsixtythree 5 месяцев назад +2

      I'd say Guillermo del Toro is very much aware of the traditions of mythology and fairy tales and there's a long, long tradition of the "love at first sight" trope from stories in The Bible, to ancient Greek, Medieval and Renaissance literature, from Romeo and Juliet to Sense and Sensibility, from Elf to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

    • @DocuzanQuitomos
      @DocuzanQuitomos 5 месяцев назад

      A lot of people see the choice as "incomprehensible", but I consider it's more executed in a sloppy way: it lacks any real reason why the choice is made (except for the reason The Golden Army needs to be activated... just that).
      Five more minutes would have been enough to introduce the stakes needed to give more meaning to his choice: some ruse that really puts in danger Nuala (sparing his brother); a ruse that makes Abe think Nuala really is in mortal danger, only to be shown he was deceived (for this, they would have need to save for later the revelation whatever harms her, harms him) or even make Abe act on his own and split the team before they are introduced to the Angel of Death (adding the friendly love for Hellboy to the mix, along the romantic love in the attempt to save Nuala).
      But no: the heroes undo all the conflict and Abe has knowledge that Nuada can't really harm Nuala if he wishes to live so, when they meet it feels like: "We have saved Hellboy; you have no leverage over us! Here, have the last piece of the crown, anyway" XD.
      I wonder if this happened due to creative differences that couldn't be solved in time or they really just couldn't think of better stakes there... but yeah, a little piece got missing there (and it's not the only moment in the film some things happen "just because").

      @@3lankfac32 It makes sense he would go on his own because, in the comics of the time, Mike Mignola had used that device in some stories already (Abe, splitting from the team to do things his way). Now, Abe getting separated from the group doesn't have to happen for his own will: once in the underground, an ambush could separate him from the group.
      There were options, and they were not beyond reason; but, again, the film fell partially into a trap for keeping all of them togheter all the time.

    I hadn't remembered the first time I saw this, but the martial arts scenes here, anything with Prince Nuada, really *were* impressively great. And I say that as a Chinese-American who grew up watching martial arts, from HK action movies as a kid, from movies in the '70s and '80s, Bruce Lee, Gordon Liu, Shaw Brothers films, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, through the different ages. I think I preferred these to Hero and Crouching Tiger, because I'm not as big a fan of the more 'floaty' wirework from those or even in Shang-Chi vs. the choreography here, where you really feel like the fight movements carry real mass and momentum behind them. Wikipedia says the guy who played Prince Nuada, Luke Goss, spent 6-7 months doing sword and spear training with a Jackie Chan stunt team guy. I think that and the choreography really paid off.

    The reason this film felt open ended was because most of the plot lines were planned to be resolved in Hellboy 3; like Hellboy, Liz and Abe going off on their own, the twin babies, Hellboy enacting his destiny to bring about the apocalypse etc. However Hellboy 3 kept getting delayed. This was due to a variety of reasons; Hellboy 2 underperformed at the box office which lost studio interest, Del Toro had other projects that also never came to fruition and most of all: Funding. Del Toro said that if he were to make Hellboy 3, and most importantly do it right, he'd need a budget of at least 120 million. But no studio wanted to give him the money. Sad thing is Hellboy 3 will never happen now. Ron Perlman isn't getting any younger, and sadly Selma Blair was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
    In a perfect world, Hellboy 3 would've been made. And, going by everything we've seen in Hellboy 1&2 as well has the few hints del Toro has given on the plot, it would've been nothing short of spectacular.

    The father theme...I think it was significant that when Hellboy found out he was going to have a child he didn't say "I'm going to be a father?" he said "I become father?" as in he grows to become the father that he lost and the father-son cycle repeats.

    Yeah, the studio wouldn't let them make part 3, but Guillermo did have a vision for the third film. Still does...The Hellboy remake was a garbage, as a fan of the comics, yeah things show up from the comics, but so what, none of it matters because it's such a nothing story with cursing for no reason, and OVER-violence. Much like Invincible, there's a lot of emphasis on how violent the book is, but then they miss EVERYTHING else about what ACTUALLY makes the book good. I'm a HUGE Hellboy fan (haven't read BPRD yet, but I have the Plague of Frogs books, just haven't gotten around to reading 'em) and the swearing? That's not in the book...I don't know why that was added, and the 'violence' isn't actually VIOLENT, there's a lot of ACTION, and sure, parts are cut off, but Mignola's style makes it all...not serious. The STAKES are what make it all feel serious. It's yet again people misunderstanding the source material and so delivering a subpar product. Guillermo understands the assignment EVERY time he sits in the chair, he understands what makes people drawn to unrealistic characters in fantastic settings and can therefore elicit genuine emotion. Maybe at some point someone will get part 3 made but probably, sadly not.

    Hi Jaby & Steph!😊 Yeah, I wasn't a fan of the reboot. If you take Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman out of the equation you lost me. I recognized Roy Dotrice as the King. He was in the 80s TV series "Beauty and the Beast" with Ron Perlman.😉 Abe definitely made several bad decisions in this film. I am still a fan of the origin story of Hellboy from the first film. Great reactions to the second Hellboy film, Kids!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

    Johann: You will learn to obey me, follow protocol and stay fockused at all times.
    Hellboy: Oh, that word? Fockused? Yeah....with your accent, I wouldn't use it that much.
    Very much would be like the scene in the first Rush Hour movie when Lee says the "N" word.

    "The decision making"
    I love the film,but a couple of things have to be in mind to get why some choices are so slopy. Yes, the most obvious one is that those moments were "cheap" when they wanted to forward the story and didn't spend much time making it right (like the bean... he could have tossed it right into a water source; we just see it jumping for drama sake, and our heroes don't do anything because the monster needs to appear).
    But the most important reason is that by the time this film was produced, the comics and the storyline they wanted for the films had followed completely separate ways (in the comic, Liz Sherman is not Hellboy's love interest, we know Abe's whole back story, and the world keeps getting weirder by the day).
    This led eventually to the outcome you partially have experienced: that there is a third Hellboy film that tries to get back to the comic storyline, rebooting the two previous films. This break up was not easy: Guillermo del Toro has stated he was very saddened he couldn't complete this trilogy and Jeffrey Tambor criticized harshly Mike Mignola (the creator of the comic) for going through with a reboot in a move he qualified as a disrespect to all the original crew involved in the first films.
    Perhaps the closest you may be to experiencing what the comics are really like, is with two animated examples. In 2006 there were attemtps to make an animated series that wasn't really picked up; but two films were completed as pilots: "Hellboy: Blood and Iron" and "Hellboy: Sword of Storms". Unwillingly, they could be considered prequels/sequels/sort of paralel films to these two films because Hellboy, Liz Sherman and Abe Sapien are voiced by Ron Perlman, Selma Blair and Doug Jones.
    And if you (for reaction or spare time) want to experience a Mignola story with the art of Mike Mignola... you can always try The Amazing Screw-On Head XD: ruclips.net/video/XbsDvGtTRWU/видео.html
    Nice reaction, see you in the next one.

    i also keep agreeing with Jaby with the stupid things they were doing, like not just destroying the piece when they had it. She melted the crown at the end, she could have just melted the piece before hand and never have to worry about the Golden army ever again. But there were a couple times he was going "why are they doing this" and i was going "yep, why are they doing that." Plot armor i guess. If they did stuff smartly the movie would have been over much sooner.

    The reason the new handler from Hellboy 1 wasn't in this movie was because he was working on a project at the time so couldn't come back in time to make this movie. So they had to write him out as being sent away because he annoyed hellboy.

    I like the first Hellboy, but I consider it a bit of a narrative mess. It goes from here to there, people do things, but none of it really seems cohesive.
    I love this movie, though. They tightened up everything. The script makes more sense, the action is amped up, and the humor is funnier. I love when Abe and Hellboy are drunk singing together. I love the fights in the library and against the golden army. I love watching the monster with the metal hand subject himself to his own demise.
    This is a great movie from beginning to end.

    I find I don't like half measures when it comes to fantasy worlds. So in this movie I felt the creatures and their world were fake in a way, not truly present. Because their existence was hidden, and suddenly they themselves had faded away, it was like they were never there at all.

    about her destroying the crown. I don't think it's a choice based entirely on morality. here's the thing. it and the Golden Army were designed for war and possessing a seemingly invincible army of war machines can tempt people hard, which you could quickly see with Hellboy when he immediately began thinking about using the army soon after getting his hands on the crown. there's that and while the army could've been used for a lot of things other than killing - do you really think the world would just ignore a non-human running an army of self-repairing robots and not try to take it from him, thus waging war anyways?

    This was a great set of movies (Hellboy 1 & 2), and while I don't hate the new one that came out (I do like that one too and would like a sequel to that as well), I would love a sequel to this movie. Also, it would have been helpful to have this army around, just in case (like if Hellboy did bring about the end of the world, like they have been saying, that might have been a great time to have an indestructible army), but I also see the downside as well (like if the army falls in the wrong hands). Overall, I would like more of this franchise and explore the lore of Hellboy more. When the new one came out, I learned for the first time, that on Hellboy's mother's side, he is a direct descendent of king Arthur (I think that is very interesting). And did anyone notice that the creature that saved Hellboy's life in this movie looks a lot like one of the giant creatures that appears and goes around killing people when Hellboy gets Kind Arthur's Sword and almost end's the world. I don't know if they are supposed to be the same character, or if it's just a homage to the previous Hellboy movies, or if this character is from the comments (if they are the same character), but that couldn't be unintentional. Overall, this character and the movies made about him are great and I want more.
