WTVJ was sold to NBC in 1987, and was switched from CBS to NBC Affiliates in 1989.

WTVJ would no longer be CBS in January 1, 1989. It would eventually be NBC, and the rest is history.

A similar scenario could be done for KMSP, Channel 9 in Minneapolis/St. Paul (2001-2002) after Fox bought Chris-Craft, where KMSP was a Fox O&O, but it was still a UPN affiliate until September 2002.

at the 1:32 mark - the station owned by one network carries the programming of another network. Similar case can be made for WBRC Channel 6 in Birmingham, Alabama (January-August 1996). WBRC was a FOX network O&O, but it was still an ABC affiliate until August 1996.

Fox only programmed two nights a week in 1988... for all intents and purposes, WCIX was still an independent (in addition to taking any CBS programming WTVJ would have dropped as WTVJ cleared NBC shows WSVN pre-empted).

I love that they actually address the fact at the time they were an NBC-owned CBS affiliate.

    1988
Tampa Bay #14: 4 affiliates, 3 independents, 1 strong hispanic station, 2 aggressive public stations, 65% cable penetration, plus 9 daily newspapers, and 70 radio stations.
Miami #16: 4 affiliates, 3 independents, 2 strong hispanic stations, 2 aggressive public stations, 51% cable penetration, plus 5 daily news papers and 50 radio stations.

Who were the 3 Indies in Tampa? You had WFTS and WTMV but WTTA had the license but didn't really go on the air until 1991.

And as of 2023, Tampa is *still* the largest media market in Florida.

Also, WHFT isn't an independent too, it's a religious station and still is to this day.

      Religious isn't a network. It's paid programming.

It was an independent around the time of this video.

WCIX isn't an independent station at that time, it was a FOX station!

But FOX only broadcasted 1 night a week around that time so they basically were still independent the rest of the week.

I agree: West Palm Beach is usually considered part of South Florida even though it's not the first thing people think of when they hear the term. And DC, well, they're more of the Mid-Atlantic to me.

  • @JimmySand9

Well, that includes West Palm Beach, which is a seperate television market from Miami (I know, it's still the same metro area, but it's pretty spread out). And DC being the Southeast? That's definately debatable.

  • @nextg

@JimmySand9 Actually, SFL is currently the largest metro area in the Southeast (5.54 million people). This is followed by Washington, D.C. (5.476 mil), and Atlanta is a not-so-distant third (5.475 mil).

@OTownNews Nor will we ever hear about South Florida being the largest metro in the Southeast. I don't think Atlanta will be giving up that crown.

Kind of interesting how the CBS eye comes out of the peacock's head...

Take a look at 1:38 - 1:42, when NBC Peacock zooms in into the peacock's head, then the CBS Eyemark logo comes out at the peacock's head.
