  • In this WSVN "Big Switch" story from late '87 or '88, nearly everyone gets it wrong including Ed Ansin. And of course we all know who got the last laugh. While many NBC affiliates riding high on the Peacock network's dominance were #1 in the mid to late 1980s, Channel 7 was an also ran mired in third place. Most predicted its demise when it affiliated with FOX (when FOX only had 2 nights of programming per week) on January 1, 1989. Instead with its cutting-edge for the time Joel Cheatwood designed tabloid packaged "MTV News", WSVN quickly surpassed Channel 4 WTVJ in the market and then began challenging "The One & Only Channel 10", especially in the demos. Never bet against Ed Ansin. BTW, Ed Ansin of 1987 doesn't look much different than Ed Ansin of 2019. Thanks to Seth Kaplan of digging up this gem.

It's eerie how little Ed's office changed in appearance in this clip to his passing last week

Little did we know that FOX would end up affiliating with WSVN. CBS changed its mind about buying WCIX 6 (now WFOR 4).

I remember reading that CBS was most interested in buying their then current affiliate, WTVJ, but didn't meet their asking price, and that's how the station ended up in NBC's hands. So CBS buys the weaker WCIX 6. Six years later, NBC and CBS agree to swap frequencies in Miami so that NBC could get WCAU in Philadelphia, finally giving CBS the frequency they wanted to own 6 years earlier.

CBS first threatened to buy WCIX when KKR first attempted to sell WTVJ to Lorimar-Telepictures, which killed that deal outright, and *then* underbid for WTVJ. It literally was like a soap opera.

In 1989. WSVN Channel 7 went from NBC to FOX, WCIX Channel 6 went from FOX to CBS, and WTVJ Channel 4 went from CBS to NBC! Then 6 years later, in 1995, WTVJ moved to Channel 6, and WCIX moved to Channel 4 and became WFOR!
