September 10, 1995 will be the day no one will forget, in the wide world of broadcast television in Miami! WTVJ moved to Channel 6, and WCIX moved to Channel 4 and became WFOR!

Yes, I remember this affiliation switch quite well!

This reminds me of the affilation swap that happened to the New Orleans stations back about 12 or 15 years ago.

This logo reminds me of the "Channel 6" logo on the 1987 "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" cartoon. Coincidentally, April O'Neil appeared on a Key West, Florida TV station in the beginning of the NES game, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project" reporting on the disappearance of Manhattan Island. Maybe WTVJ and the fictional WTRL (call letters from the first TMNT movie's Channel 3) Channel 6 New York are sister stations, or maybe that too, is coincidence. Would be funny for a video game based on a cartoon predict a new brand/logo for WTVJ.

One of the several stations affected by the CBS/Westinghouse merger in 1993. Many Westinghouse stations were NBC. Westinghouse changed all their owned stations to CBS, leaving NBC to either swap with or buy their new affiliates. Then Fox went on a shopping spree in 1994, targeting VHF (2-13) stations in a couple of dozen markets, causing even more station-swap chaos.

Yup. Westinghouse was pissed that ABC screwed them over with WJZ, and made a deal with CBS. That did cause problems in Philadelphia though, since CBS (at the time) owned WCAU.

There are a LOT of stations across the country that use or have used that slogan. TVJ stopped using it around '99, I think.

KCNC & KUSA switched the same night WTVJ did, because Denver was part of the compensation for CBS loosing the channel 6 broadcast tower to NBC, this deal also forced McGraw Hill to pick up the ABC Affiliation for KMGH since KUSA had to drop ABC to pick up NBC.

Miami had a New Orleans-style switch too. Check out the above video.

This is the second time that the South Florida television market experienced another affiliation change, first in 1988, when WSVN, WTVJ, and WCIX switched affiliations. WSVN took the FOX affiliation in 1989. WPLG, the ABC-affilated Post-Newsweek-owned station is the only station in Miami that still reamains a network-affiliated station and continues to do so this day.

You worded that wrong. There was no affiliation switch, just a channel number shift.
      But this comment's 10 years old so...ehh

In Boston, WBZ 4 (then NBC) and WHDH 7 (then CBS) swapped affiliations officially and sadly permanently on Jan. 2nd, 1995! AARRGGHH!!

    • @PanchamBro2

Are you upset that WBZ became CBS?
Or the fact that WHDH became NBC til 2016?

i watched switchover videos from all stations involved, and somehow, they ALL claimed to get improved reception and range. If changing call letters,affiliates,numbers,channels,idents,etc.. is all it takes, then they should have kept switching, then they could have eventually been seen in all of FL, and Cuba.

Yeah…and we wouldn’t need cable to see the stupid channel properly.

  • @TimothyMischka

Yeah, but they did use it around 1997.

Didn't WTVJ get to move it's tower to the Miami antenna farm once the digital transition was completed?

    • @davidvelazquez9473
      @davidvelazquez9473 6 лет назад +2

altfactor Yes they did. I was able to pick up WTVJ clear as a bell in Deerfield Beach, and even in Lake Worth, something that was impossible in the analog era.

Not only that, it wound up back on the channel 4 tower!

Later in the 90’s a new tower was built and the digital era just made it better

Is that larcan transmitter the same one that was shut down by Earnest Walker in 2009 because of the DTV transition?

    • @JakeBechtold

Sure looks like it is. I would presume WCIX bought it when they rebuilt after Andrew. Impressed WTVJ got 15 years out of that thing!

Must See TV became Can't See TV after WTVJ went to 6. WTVJ is no longer a factor in the South Florida ratings, as with NBC as a whole.
