      @@TeflonTrench It's a one time for Waves Tune - Antares Autotune is based on a subscription. Since last fall I started using Cubase Pro as my main DAW and that one has a built in tuning software called "Vari audio", and it's really good. So the waves tune gets less usage these days.

What would you recommend, if anything?

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  Год назад

      I've personally never had a lockout problem, perhaps that's an issue pertaining to specific DAWs. A lot of my update plans have expired and I can still use everything. The biggest thing is you lose future support for updates which helps keep things compatible with DAW and hardware updates (like Mac M1, for example). Even if you have to renew your update plan, you're still getting a heck of deal. If the main alternative is Antares Autotune which has a monthly charge vs paying Waves $30 every few years is WAY cheaper than a monthly fee.
      I think that in a way, their strategy for having people buy update plans in the future helps subsidize their pricing now. If they wanted to cover the cost of future updates on the initial purchase then you can pretty much guarantee all of their plugins would be double the cost to help pay for those updates.
      I have yet to come across a pitch correction software that is better than Waves or Antares but if you find one please let me know and I'd be more than happy to add it to my video queue!

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  2 года назад +3

      This is basically the difference:
      Wave Tune Real Time: FOR PERFORMING
      Applies pitch correction in real-time so you can perform live and receive the pitch correction. Adjustments to the note can only be made by turning the sensitivity knobs or skipping certain notes using the keybed in the app.
      Waves Tun Standard: FOR EDITING
      Is not done in real time during performance but rather you load pre-recorded audio into it. However you are able to fine tune EXACTLY what each note in the audio will be. This is much easier to edit your audio because it's more like editing MIDI notes on a piano-roll. It can be used very subtly for individual notes or applied extremely heavily to entirely re-pitch a full melody.
      A possible work flow for both would be to record your auto with some subtle Real Time, then load that audio into Standard for more precise correction.

    Great review! Is Waves supposed to be used only in addition to another software like FL Studio? I don't know if it has its own program that works independently, if it does I couldn't find it anywhere.. I'm new to all this so I'm not sure exactly what to use to get the best results. Thanks for all this info though, you earned a sub!

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  3 года назад +1

      Appreciate the sub!
      Waves plugins are VSTs which are designed to be opened up inside of a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). The include FL Studio, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Cubase, Bitwig, etc. There's a ton of them out there which vary in price. Waves plugins don't run standalone unfortunately but if you have software that can load up a VST (some video and streaming software also run VSTs) then you can use these plugins.
      If music production is something you want to get more into I would highly recommend investing in a DAW. Even if most of the music you play is done outside of a DAW, using one can be a great way to record your music and then mix and master it for release. Often times any MIDI controller you purchase will come packaged with an intro level version of a DAW to get you started (for example if you buy an Akai MPK Mini or Arturia Keylab they will come with a license code for whatever DAW they've partnered with). This means you can purchase a $100 controller and get a code for a starter DAW which is a great way to get into the space. Then if you decide to upgrade the DAW or switch to a new one, you can easily do so and your controller will still work on the new DAW so you aren't out anything.
      I also have a video where I talk about DAWs and my experience with them which you can give a watch here if you need a bit of an overview: ruclips.net/video/gvG-wFMqhZI/видео.html
      Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

      @@theflash691 To follow up with this, there are programs I just learned about such as Gig Performer & Mainstage which allow you to open and launch VSTs and perform some audio routing. It's not technically a "DAW" but it will allow you to patch some of your audio through VSTs without needing a DAW. Might be more in the realm of what you're looking for.

  • @kiliankraus
    @kiliankraus 2 года назад +1

    with the target pitch, could somehow link up some midi to set the traget pitch, so you could have your target pitch changing? Sort of like using it as a cleaner sounding vocoder or talkbox?

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  2 года назад

      MIDI for notes only applies to the reference pitch which is just a tone for the singer to cue into. Otherwise the "cleanest vocoder" sound you could get would be to turn the note correction to max. But it's not going to synthesize the vocals which is what you need in order to get a vocoder/talkbox effect.
      What I recommend you look into would be Soundtoy's Little Alter Boy which let's you adjust the pitch with keys. Here's an example at 18:35 in another video I made: ruclips.net/video/Tg9O4PEetnU/видео.html
      Or look into Waves OVox which also synthesizes vocals, though much more aggressively.

    What kind audio interface do you need to run this plugin for life bar show

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  3 года назад

      If you're just running one mic then something like a FocusRite Scarlett would work. They have cheaper models geared towards just solo performances. You also have to have some sort of DAW open on your computer to run the VST. I think the Scarletts come with a license for Ableton Live Lite which would be fine for something as light as running a single VST for a live performance. Then you can use the headphone port on the Scarlett or any output jacks on the back (depending on the model) to send audio to your mixing board.

      @@GourlieRecords dude thank you so much I been asking for advice for months and no one responded. I have ableton and I'm either gonna get a focusrite or motu m2 which has 2.5 to as low as 0.7 latency If you install drivers and all I want is to run wavestune real time and a simple reverb to record vocals with or play live like in the living room when having a house party over my backing tracks. I have 129 professional instrumentals and I'm ready to get down but just need interface. Have good microphone and macbook pro. But people are telling me I can't use wavestune real time without a soundgrid interface and dante server or it will supposedly lag back in latency.and antares autotune they say I cant run that without an apollo interface with dsp effects and its SO Expensive . Waves tune real time and antares autotune both sound same to me. So will a focusrite work to run just waves real time and reverb live for recording in studio and jamming out? Please help

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  3 года назад

      Yeah for sure! The interface doesn't add much latency. Stacking a lot of VSTs and effects is what really kills latency. Waves Tune is super fast though. And if you start to get latency for whatever reason you can increase your buffer size in Ableton. I run Waves tune on my streams all the time and run a direct monitor through Ableton back to my headphones and hardly notice any latency. It exists but not the point where you're singing out of time or it's distrscting. And that's on a vocal processing chain with 6 other effects and over a bunch of other audio and midi tracks playing. Of course some of this depends on your computer specs. But with just Waves and Reverb you'll be fine. For minimal latency I recommend only using the stock Ableton effects for any EQ, reverb, delays, etc. They're designed to require minimal CPU and you'd be hard pressed to find a plugin with less latency.

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  3 года назад

      Adding on to my previous comment. Antares Autotune is a waste of money unless you really have some cash to throw down on a monthly subscription. They're just the main name brand pitch correction software so people spring for it. Even in Waves videos producers call Waves Real Time "auto tune" even though it's a competing brand. That's how stuck on it people are. Some of their high tier AutoTune software has some cool features but it's so expensive. Waves Tune is a huge bang for your buck and it runs fast!

    Is the vibrato feature kind of like a humanize feature?

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  2 года назад

      The vibrato feature is designed to preserve the vibrato in a singer's voice to prevent the retuning of a vibrato which would lead to really fast back and forth note changes. It's just another sensitivity switch, basically.

    Why is there no direct comparison of the samples processed by the other software? Seems like this missed a key (pun intended) metric, not comparing the sound quality, yet doing direct side-by-side comparisons of all other aspects. If someone is doing a direct "this vs. that" review, gotta play the same samples through both tools and let people hear if/how they differ. Features make good lists. The technology makes good tracks. I would love to hear A/B comparison with real Auto-Tune. I think they provide a free trial period long enough to make a video. :)

    • @GourlieRecords

      @@rizzlebeats1484 Yeah I mean the settings are more or less just set to as fast as possible. I'd check the following:
      1) That your correction knob is turned to 100% and is turned on
      2) That you've chosen a scale. If it's set to only Chromatic, that will just correct to the nearest note rather than a note in a specific scale so it won't be as noticeable and will allow out-of-scale notes. Changing the scale to match your track is super important and will yield much better "Lil Wayne" type results.
      Hopefully it's one of those otherwise I wouldn't be able to fully diagnose the problem without seeing and hearing what you're doing.

      I'd have to see/hear what you're doing to fully diagnose, but is the "Correction" knob turned up and also the "On" button lit pink? And did you select a scale or just have it correcting chromatically? (Chromatic won't be as noticeable but it will still tune to the nearest semitone) Also what type of audio are you sending it? It only works with monophonic signals (such as a voice or a single note instrument). It will have a really hard/impossible time correcting chords or harmonies because there's more than one note being played.

    I can’t get my tune real time to sound Natural:(

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  2 года назад +2

      Getting it to sound natural can be a bit tricky and is the true art behind this plugin. It's a matter of dialing in the transition and speed. Depending on how much vibrato is in your voice you might also need to play around with the vibrato setting. Also play with the "Correction" knob which is a dry wet. Sometimes retaining some of the original signal by dialing back correction to even just like 90% can keep it more natural sounding.
      My suggestion to figure out the best settings for any voice is to record the natural vocals with Waves Tune disabled then listen back to that recording with it enabled and dial in the settings from there because It can be really hard to dial in the settings while you're singing. Start with slow transitions/speed then speed them up in unison to where you start to notice them correcting but not making it sound too unnatural. Once you have the settings for that singer you can then start recording live again and this should sound good.
      If the recording is also way out of key then there is only so much room for it to retain a "natural" sound while still correcting it to be in key. I recommend using the reference note feature when recording to find the key as best as you can. Even singing over a melody with the notes you want the vocal to be can help you get a bit closer to make the pitch correction work a bit less.
      If you find your vocal melody that's recorded is way out of key and it isn't snapping to any of the notes you need it to then you might need to use something like the standard "Waves Tune" (not real time) or Melodyne which let you adjust your vocal notes more like MIDI notes on a pianoroll. Though these are not useful for live performance.

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  Год назад

      I know exactly what you mean. You’ll probably want the standard Waves Tune (not Real Time) or Melodyne. They don’t work live but rather analyze recorded audio and allow you to apply subtle or significant pitch correcting to specific notes. This retains much more of the natural harmonics and gives you precise control of what notes are corrected and how.

      Agreed. Everything goes on sale constantly. You should be able to get most of their plugins for $30 or less at some point within a 3-6 month window.
