    Questions answered in this video:
    ✅Melodyne, Waves Tune or Auto-Tune? What would you recommend?
    ✅Do you ever use albums to reference when you were mixing? If so what were some of your favorites to use?
    ✅ Have you ever mixed latin music?
    ✅ You mentioned putting the MV2 on the end of a 'bass sub'. With that do you mean compressing the sub frequencies?
    ✅ On keeping a copy of everything you work on, do you not store it in the cloud like with Dropbox or similar? That must be cheaper and more resilient than keeping old drives around.
    ✅ Have you ever thought of running a paid service where you provide customers a song to mix every week/month and then provide them with short reviews about their mix?

    Another amazing tool for vocals is revoice pro, it's not for autotune per say although it has a tuning function in it, but it uses a reference vocal to match to, timing and pitch, several other programs I've tried claim they do this, but revoice pro, really is in a league of its own when it comes to tightening up vocal layers, it's what they use in movie studios to dub lines where the original dialogue audio isn't useable quality, so as you can imagine it needs to be absolutely perfectly in sync with the original audio to be convincing. When used on multiple vocal layers it actually tends to create this very cool chorus/mod effect that's like nothing else, Linkin Park you can hear it clear as day on the vocal stems. Not for everyone and can sound almost robotic in solo, but in a mix it seems to make vocals punch through like nothing else.

So died this May with all my data my music , music libraries for Kontakt 5 and plugins! Good answer on backups, Warren! I have heard of the "Rule of Threes" for backing up anything you can't afford to lose: 3 different backups, 3 different locations, and 3 different media. So maybe one backup to the cloud, one on an external hard drive at home, and one on a high-capacity thumb drive kept at work (or at least another external hard-drive kept at work). Short of global thermo-nuclear war, there should be somewhere to go to find a workable copy regardless of the nature of the disaster that strikes!

    Warren, I’ve been watching your videos for about a month now and am blown away. Thanks for all the great stuff. I have a question that you might consider answering in FAQ. Monday, I got into a fight with a french press, ended up breaking the carafe and cutting my thumb really badly (fretting hand, 15 stitches, at least 1-2 months no guitar). Anyhow, have you ever suffered an injury which curtailed your playing and what would you suggest doing in the meantime?

    For audio, clouds will work for many as a long term repository (not so much for us for 4K ProRes or RAW video, due to transfer requirements). Storage Area Networks or other Hard drive arrays work locally, but one thing to keep in mind, hard drives taken out of the spin (so to speak), as in put on a shelf, will start to accumulate potentially irrecoverable bit errors after just a couple years. Many, including myself have seen disks have major errors after a couple years. Sometimes people think that their offline hard drives are fine, until they go to actually use the media, and find little digital equivalents of pops and clicks (bit errors). However with digital, it may actually keep the files from being fully readable and usable, requiring an expensive service to reconstruct and recover as much as possible.
    So, LTO or similar tapes are still used for longer term, cost effective storage. I can't believe that magnetic tape is still the best thing available (if anybody know of a better solution-- please let me and people in general know). The up-front can be a bit expensive (several hundred to a couple thousand for the drive/system) to get started, but the cost per GB drops quickly after that to become lower than hard drives per GB. LTO lasts a lot longer with significantly less risk of data corruption. Finally, take/keep copies off-site for redundancy, as noted. So, if you must use hard drives, use a cloud as well, and ideally run the drives through a spin-up and OS check/fix every several months, before the error rate gets too high.

    LOL you've convinced me to buy Waves Tune, Wasn't really aware of that one, but I had a studio with the mercury bundle years ago, and I found a lot of the plugins at the time to be very unstable and bloated, also felt like plugin overload, kinda put me off Waves for a long time, but recently I've started to come back around, I've been wondering how gravelly singers managed to get perfect autotune when Melodyne Antares and VariAudio struggle to even find the note much of the time, the closest I've come is Melodynes DNA polyphonic mode, but it's not ideal as the note layout is a jumbled mess, I work with a lot of rock singers like that, I'm one myself so if it can solve that issue it would be a godsend lol.

    MAJOR FLAW WITH WAVES TUNE: It stops working when it hits a tempo change. Melodyne doesn't have this problem. This critical information is buried on page 9 of the manual. You can only use Waves Tune when it's strictly locked to a one-tempo grid

    I used Melodyne but I wasn`t lucky with it because it had a horrible update/upgrade-policy and had to be reactivated again n`again. But the major thing why I wasn`t so happy with Melodyne was this kind of "jittering-synthesized artifacts" with only very slight modifications that made a good and clean record sounding a lil`bit "robotic" and "snuffy".
    Waves sounds more natural, clearer and inconspicuous.

  • @mnpestudio

    In my humble opinion, Waves Tune keeps the natural sound of the vocals as much as it can. I've used Auto Tune for years and I always found out that the vocals that I tuned were "too tuned", ya know what I mean? Even if I did less tuning, it still sounded as if the vocals were treated at some point (example if this may be the movie The Beauty & The Beast, where Emma's vocals were sooooo tuned, I'd bet that they used Auto Tune for that)
    Waves Tunes, as I said before, keeps the natural sound of the vocals as much as it can and people can barely notice that I tuned the vocal. It not as drastically as Auto Tune, but I really like it a lot and this is why I made the switch. I haven't tested Melodyne, so I can't say much about it (though I've seen it in action).

    Cubase has Vari-Audio built in plus it's ... Cubase, so it's fully integrated and you can stretch and twist things to your hearts content all in one program. Now I think it's better to practice and rehearse for hours if needed until you're happy and then get some great takes. You get some extra authority when you really know how to play something you can't buy for money. Then again I'm happy to fix bum notes and to do crazy experimental pitching. No matter what Cubase can do it ... that said, I think Melodyne is one heck of a program so it's on the list.

    -is there any sonic difference from setting a hi output in the mixing session masterchnl and bouncing that at a certain level, then bringing in a lower level bounced stereo mix in a master session , and boosting the volume to match in master session( hope that makes sense) . my question is does it get wider, or different in sound in anyway . thanks

      Hi Warren, loved hearing your comments on John Martyn's Solid Air! The Solid Air album is my "Night at The Opera" The production, recording and incredible performances captured of all the musicians on the whole album by the incredible John Wood at Sound Techniques, for me is second to none and is my constant inspiration for music production and recording. I was very fortunate to have worked with John Martyn from 1996 to 2004 and helped to secure a record deal for him with both GO! Discs and Independiente record labels where I was working during that time until I moved to Wisconsin, in 2004. After John sadly passed in 2009 I was contacted by John's Chicago based friend and record producer Jim Tullio (Jim is also a very good friend of Shelly Yakus) and asked if I would help put together a tribute album of covers of John's music by various well-known and not so well known artists who are fans of John's music . We managed to secure tracks by Beck, Robert Smith (The Cure) David Gray, Joe Bonamassa and many more who all recorded tracks free of charge....amazing!. The album was released in 2011 and is called "Johnny Boy Would Love This... A Tribute To John Martyn" I'd be happy to send you a copy of the CD! You can also find it on Spotify. Anyway sorry for the extremely long reply but I was moved by your comments on the production of John's track Solid Air which I share! Thank you so much for the amazing content and inspiration.

    Hi warren. Can you quickly answer me this please. When you have finished mixing a song and your completely happy with it and how it sounds and you feel it dont need any more tweaking, do you ever question why doe's it need mastering? And have you ever been unhappy with a mastered song, where before it sounded just fine?... I ask this as i'm very happy with one of my mixed songs,, and kind of scared it will sound different if i get it mastered.. ?

    A version of Melodyne comes with Studio One which I am not a fan of. I don't know if it's because it's a limited version, but it does not allow me to achieve what I want to achieve. I end up using Cubase's VariAudio feature, which is very good. I have even used an iZotope Nectar 2 module which allows you to edit just the portions you capture and have achieved very good results with it.

      You’re right, David. Melodyne essential (which is the one that comes with Studio One) has a very basic toolset. If you want to adjust pitch modulation, e.g. vibrato, pitch drift, amplitude or formants, you would need one of the larger Melodyne editions. :) Please feel free to download our trial version and see what Melodyne can do for you: www.celemony.com/en/trial

I’ve gone back to some prior tracks that included Melodyne 4 edits, then reworked them with Mv5, and whoa, the improvements solely to “pitch center” are stunning. Breath, sibilance, and other non-vocalized parts are now parsed into separate blobs for easy editing, and I may never use my de-Esser plugins again. Come to think of it, maybe a whole episode dedicated to the new version is appropriate?

      I wonder if the weakspot of Melodyne got better. It sounds the best, but it is clearly the worst at recognizing the notes. Has it gone better doing so in the fifth version? You can not use it for rock vocals very often because it does not analyze the pitch correctly. If it is capable of doing so now I might get it, too.

  • @joebobhenrybob2000
    @joebobhenrybob2000 6 лет назад

    Storage - consider M-Disc. You want specs to well exceed the desired timeframe if possible. Optimistically a quality hard drive could be dependable for up to 7 years. M-Disc is the only thing I've found that could be a personal long term data storage solution. (...that might actually work dependably) Failing that, burning a high quality dvd or cd and storing in the fridge COULD give you 30 years but quite possibly might not. Best a "little guy" without a lot to spend on the problem can probably do. Anyone serious about backing up a lot of files long term ought to check out M-Disc.

    Hi Warren I have a production question for you that I always struggle with a little. If you're recording a song which has a free time intro then the body of the song is meant to come in to a click, how do you go about this when tracking? You can't mute the click in the intro in the headphones because then the band will probably not come in when the click starts. Or having the click going in the intro will spoil the free time feel, even if the band ignores it they may still not come in exactly on the click. Would love to hear your thoughts on that one! Cheers!

    • @tisbonus
      @tisbonus 6 лет назад

      royglennie that is a problem I've run into as well. There are a number of ways to achieve this. The easiest may be to record the "free" intro as a separate file or recording. Then merge the two into a single project. If you mix the intro separately, you can mix them down to stereo tracks and then merge (edit) them, which I believe is much easier than syncing the whole mix. I'm curious to hear how Warren would tackle this. Really great question!

    • @royglennie
      @royglennie 6 лет назад +1

      Ah thanks Tisbonus yes good idea, I might try that on the next one. Last one I did was using a guide track (e.g. Acoustic guitar) for the free intro in a similar way but butted up to a printed track of the click which worked ok too. Thanks for the insight, and yes looking forward to Warren's opinion on the best way! Cheers

    My dad recently gave me some of his old rack gear (old behringer preamp, compressor and eq) and I'm loving the feel of analong way more than using plugins in my daw, but people say that there is no point in using cheap analog gear when digital sounds way better. Should beginners stick to mixing in the box until they can afford the end tier stuff, or is having cheap analog gear to atleast practice on better?

    For Indian vocals which are very complex compared to western vocals, waves tune gives more accurate results, melodyne does not give full control when tunning gamakaas or harkats.

  • @AdamRainStopper

    I have a question (and it isn't about your hair or a vaguely sexual pun). Could there be a potential fix, in these newfangled "bone-conduction" headphones, to the age-old conundrum of vocalists having to either track with headphones that make it hard to hear themselves, or with monitors that make for a lot of bleed into the vocal tracks? Basically, these headphones go on your cheekbones or the bones behind your ears, transmitting the sound to your eardrums without blocking your ears the way regular headphones do. They are marketed as a safety thing for people who operate forklifts, or as a convenience for people work in busy offices where they need to hear stuff, and most are bluetooth, but I think panasonic makes a wired set for remarkably cheap, cheap enough that I'd get a pair exclusively for that application if it would work. Thoughts?

      Adam Rainstopper interesting idea! I haven’t had many vocalists complain of traditional headphones. When they first start they may not be used to them, but typically they adjust quickly!

    I use no pitch correction. I don't really have anything against it, it's just personal preference. It is important to me as a guitarist to do it again and again and again and again until I get it perfect to me. It makes me a better guitarist, better in a studio environment, lot's of experience tracking, and by far I get the best end-product I can create.
    Edit: spelling corrected

      Thats100% correct in my view, sadly many guitarists could play a phase a thousand times and still not get it right! So the only resort is to some kind of auto tune plugin sadly or use a session player, years ago the monkey's were berated for using session players, now the beach boys openly boost about using an excellent lady bass player on many of their hits?
