the moon itself sending these messages actually makes a lot of sense as a Lovecraftian interpretation, some humongous eldritch creature hiding in plain sight that is starting to wake up/is being agitated? not to mention the stars being said to be eyes also fits in with the cosmic eldritch horror interpretation
I wonder if local58 is going to have another video drop this Thursday or Friday with the partial lunar eclipse (visible in the US).
There is an issue with the moon theory however as the moon is refered to as "his throne" in skywatching making it seam more like a residency for some powerfull being.
Plus it's fiction. I know Mirror Matt finds it kinda ridiculous, but you can literally just write about anything, make any story you want, all of that stuff.

"Unthinking they move to cut his throat, only to make a thousand mouths" is essentially the Aliens telling L58 that they screwed up hard. L58 swapped to Digital to try and shut out the aliens from interfering, but in doing so, they allowed the aliens access to much more than just Local 58's station.
I think this is the official announcement that our alien friends just went global. Not good.

"His throne" is a reference to the Skywatching video where it says the moon is his throne, so its definetly an entity that lives on the moon or the moon itself is a vessel.
Also at 47:18 it again mentions “our master’s silent house” and “an empty throne”, possibly implying that he left the moon either because he died or is heading for Earth.

Something I noticed at 44:53 - the web server LookBack is being hosted on is called Apogee. Apogee, in addition to being a pun on Apache, one of the most common web servers, is also the highest point in the moon's orbit.
MATT, the moon interpretation is very much a valid idea, there is actually an extremely popular SCP foundation story that is similar, except about the sun rather than the moon, called "When Day Breaks".

It's also referencing the Local 58 video "Skywatching" which shows someone recording the moon and the text "His Throne" shows up in it
the "moon king" who goes hrough mirrors is the moon light it self. whatever the moonlight touches becomes it's domain

And the idea that the government monitors and regulates radio signals also isn't new. It's the job of the FCC (not sure what FCG is or does). They don't monitor everything, it's on a case by case basis if bad actors are interrupting a reserved frequency.

Ok so Mat obviously missed the episode before which is called Skywatching and gives us an idea of how weird the moon really is. It’s basically a living thing of some kind and is what is referred to by “HIS THRONE” in the video. This is followed by a figure in the shadows making a prasing motion as the Moon gets bigger and the words “REJOICE” appear. I really hope May goes back and watches it as it’s definitely one of the best in the series.

"They move to cut his throat" I think "he" is the moon (an earlier video called the moon "his throne") and I think "cutting his throat" is changing the TVs to analog, which would cut off his ability to communicate.
they're changing TVs to digital actually, and i think "cutting his throat only to make a thousand mouths" refers to changing to digital as an attempt to shut off the moon or whatever is sending messages, but ending up giving it access to every station.
"It's a little silly" as he accurately gets the same idea just about every other theory Channel has gotten.

@@easthen If you go to the 2001 website, enter into the source code, changing the image it gets for the tabs (career, schedule, etc.) to "admin.gif" it gives a kind of admin tab.... I'm not sure how much that helps, but its kinda interesting.
You can't modify that file, I tried in the dev console and that file only lets you select stuff

The phone number is for a hamlet in Putnam County, NY though. I immediately recognized the 845 area code as southern NY. A lot of my extended family lives around that area.

On the screen it states Mason County, the creator is from Mason County, WV so I aasume he's basing it there. Plus the W in WCLV makes the tv broadcast an easy coast one based on its call sign.

I think that MatPat would benefit from reacting to these things with a live audience, since there's so much that we could help to clarify, offer other ideas, and remind him of certain details that he's forgotten. Also, maybe give these videos an uninterrupted watch through before going back to dissect them?
He usually does but he’s been so busy he hasn’t had the time to do live streams, but I agree I feel it would be better when it comes to these kinda videos

I'm a year late to seeing these comments.
But for the live streams, mods, or members.
They don't want to pay gate, getting mods would require hiring people to run the chat, or trusting community members, which, isn't the wisest for various reasons, hiring more people just wouldn't really be reasonable, nor is giving the job to the people who are already busy doing other things.
While chat would spoil things, which would be a bummer, chat, is also not the kindest when it comes to "correcting" or "reminding" creates in general.
Even game developers who reach out, can have some attitude to them, unfortunately.
It's the annoying thing about live streaming, there's a lack of communication, there's still a delay, there's still no guarantee people are who they say they are, people try to communicate through different sources, even if you tell them to use a specific two like they did with chat and Twitter.
Plus that would require setup, scheduling, people staying to run the stream, apposed to the on demand, that can be recorded at any time that fits.
It just falls in the few hours that he has during the day, even if you try to keep it consistent, there are no garentees.
Streaming, would be more of a hassle than what it could ever be worth, in this case.

I’m pretty sure that whilst broadcasting on frequencies without a license is illegal, it’d be hard to enforce laws against people receiving broadcasts, especially minutes after the official broadcast has ended.
Yeah I noticed that too. They changed it from “illegal broadcasting” to “illegal receiving” which is highly suspicious since as you said it’s very hard to control something like that. Also very ominous that the government would need to issue a warning for this
@@elhopper3735 "illegal receiving" might mean the government has caught on to what's happening on Channel 58, and are making an effort to quarantine it and similar broadcasts. That might also be why it's trying to switch to digital: to make it harder for a outside force to hack into it. But as you know, they always find a way.
@@ECODKyleskymast yeah seems like the switching to digital was a futile effort. They hijacked the signal all the same. The quarantine idea is really good though. I would imagine the government, or really anybody, would want to keep these messages as contained as possible. Especially considering some of the stuff it says (The 3 F’s)

Can we appreciate that the ancient version of the website is made with html table like there where made at this time ? That another level of details in this ARG and it's beautiful
One useful thing to do could be looking at the creator's other works and how they might relate to or reference each other. For example, the skeleton character is named Cadavre and appears in the webcomic Broodhollow. One of the cities that Local58 broadcasts to is Ichor Falls which features heavily in the short story collection "Ichor Falls: A Visitor's Guide". The title of one of the stories is "The Hirsch Camera (1870)", and the term Hirsch Camera appears in the Local58 retrospective. Another potential place to look is "Shining One From Above The Clouds" which the Broodhollow wikia describes as "an excerpt from a book on mythology, sharing a creation story from the Moneton tribe about how a cruel being called the Shining One was dealt with."
Plus Candle Cove which describes a TV broadcast only children could see that was so disturbing you wouldn't imagine a human making it.
I can't wait for them to do another video.

32:20 It said "research prospectus" on that image (a prospectus is "a formal legal document designed to provide information and full details about an investment offering for sale to the public")
I think it's important that the final card says it's illegal to receive transmissions, not sending them. Not sure how that would be detected and enforced though.
Maybe that was changed to form a loophole for the actual broadcasting. It also may be a way to deter people from reporting the transmission to authorities of some kind, as it may cause them to get into legal trouble (though I don’t know much about these types of legalities).
I really wish for vids like these, Mat would watch it all the way through first and react the way it was meant to be watched and THEN go back and dissect and go frame by frame rather than stopping and starting the first time through

So to me "to cut his throat" can be seen as them moving to digital to avoid these hijacks, while "a thousand mouths" symbolizes all the tv's that the hijacker used to spread his message. Then them "speaking for him" would mean that the original hijacker can't post messages anymore so this new group is now posting this text instead

in the 20:02 section through 21:03 there are eyes in the background of many different sizes and proportions, one is even hidden and can be seen staring intensely if you raise the brightness. There also appears to be text at random intervals. I don’t know if anyone has noticed this also but I thought there might be something there
"Matpat's a main character in a lovecraft story" is all that loops in my mind when he does this type of video.
"HIS THRONE" is the Moon. It was in the other videos, and in the text of the newspaper you found.

The thing I get from the Jan 2001 section of the website with the error, is that is when local 58 got "infected" or jacked by whatever entity that's been giving the weird messages during the broadcasts. It says that permissions were reset by the host after it tried to open an admin profile for the server, and then the file size was exceeded (potentially from something getting injected into the system that it wasn't prepared for?). So something got in, made itself host, and then tried to boot out the actual owners of the system.
I don't have any website experience, so there might be more mundane reasons for the error messages that I don't know, but that's what it read to me at least.
4:37 is the start of one of the greatest bits of all time. That made me laugh SO MUCH. I've been having a super off week health-wise and that really cheered me up. Thank you. 💖

What if you did History Theory? You would analyze key points in history and fact check them to see if it is biased or "written by the victors" as a famous man once said.
That’s more a job for historians. The sheer amount of effort it would take would be so great that there’d be about 1 video every year
I think that the color for GTlive should be blue. We already have 4 channels, and having 2 channels with green being their color theme isn’t pleasing. Oh my gosh it’s such a joy to see MatPat discovering and exploring these conspiracy theory ARG’s!! I’ve been waiting for this video I love the story behind Local 58 so much
For those messages that are overlaid on an image for just a frame, you can take a screenshot of that frame and the frame either before or after it(should look the same), paste one on top of the other on photoshop and change the blending mode of the top one to “difference” and it will only show the pixels that are different in both images. You can also use it for spot the difference games or magic eye images

There's a really awesome Nintendo 3DS game with a similar plot to Matt's moon theory called Stella Glow, it's still one of my favorite games to date. ImageEpoch unfortunately went bankrupt a few years after releasing Stella Glow, but they were always one of my favorite Nintendo developers for the way they threw sudden unexpected twists to turn a good game into a great game. Good days 😊

the vestigial lowband filter is or was probably some kind of part you connected to an analog TV to prevent His signals from reaching you, and it seemed to work for everywhere *except* local58. Basically He seems to only be able to transmit or intercept and edit analog signals
