I think the reason the Doppelgänger part was kinda chilling was because the context of it straight out tells you that you that one of them is a threat, but because the people/pictures look so similar and your brain can't identify the threat it gets much scarier, because your brain _knows_ that something is supposed to be wrong.
That and also the fact that once you stare long enough, you will find some differences, and are primed to see those as something being wrong and not just differences.
It actually reminds me of the blue car. A report goes out to be on the lookout for a blue car and all of a sudden there's an increase of blue cars. What's actually happening is your mind is primed to notice them in that moment. Really fascinating stuff
I think the biggest thing you missed in explaining the Mandela effect is WHY it's called that. The fact that there is a large portion of the population that believed they watched Nelson Mandela's funeral ON TV and news long before he even died. It was such a widespread phenomenon that they gave it a name.

It's natural to be disturbed by an image of a humanoid with lack of/indistiunguishable facial features, because facial recognition is such a key part to us as social beings. That lack of information scares us and it's often assessed as strange/a threat, just like how the ambiguity of a stranger in a dark alleyway is immediately assessed as a threat.

One thing I'd like to point out: RUclipsr Wendigoon did a phenomenal, comprehensive analysis of this series, and actually got in contact with the creator. The creator of the series has said that the videos are uploaded out of order intentionally, and that the optimal viewing order is "The THINK Principle," "Mandela Catalogue Vol. 1" "Overthrone," and "Intruder Alert." Beyond those four Viewing order is unknown as the creator has not said anything about the new ones afaik
The creator has also said that there are pieces of the puzzle that have not been introduced yet. If I had any idea how long will it take for season two to arrive, I would advise MatPat to not make a theory until that is wrapped, but that ain't happening.

I think the alternates are an alien race attempting to invade earth, and I believe they are trying to manipulate religion in order to do so. Faith is a very strong thing, so its strategically smart to weaken that strength. The angels seen are lies made up by the alternates in order to weaken faith.

Late viewer here, chiming in with three possible theories about the series (simply from Overthrone): 1. Aliens. Doppelganger aliens who've altered the course of human events. 2. Satan and his cohorts becoming powerful enough to overthrow God and fool the human race into following him instead 3. Eldritch horrors whose powers are beyond that of aliens or God. I almost made the mistake of watching this late at night. This is the single creepiest analog horror anything I've ever seen. Maybe it's because I'm religious but it managed to worm it's way into my soul, I can't even define why this scares me so much. With say, the Walten Files, I know what scares me, it's the violent shift from relaxed to chaos, Local 58 uses slow decent into madness, which isn't that spooky when you know where it's going. This- I don't know, they're are multiple creepy facets that I don't find creepy on their own, but together scare me like nothing else does. Props to the creator.

I feel like a carphone is the explanation there. The house is huge, has been broken into once, and has an advanced camera system, these people are presumably loaded. The real question is how often alter encounters were completely unreported just because most people didn't have the resources for the authorities to figure out what happened. I also think we're supposed to assume the guy in the car was filming his approach just in case. The text insert before he confronts the intruder looked like it was stuff he used a function on the camera to write, based on the digital font. If I had to guess, he had no writing implements around and was desperate to leave a last note before what he reasonably and correctly figured would be his death. Completely unrelated, but as far as weird, instinctual kid-fears go, being afraid of something that looks too pointy is A+ sensible.
I love how (non-mirror) Matt’s reaction to the “record your toddler’s response” section was almost exactly the same as Markiplier’s- as in him just narrating how variously peaceful/stressed it made him feel (and thus assuming the role of the toddler)

Theory: If you record "them" on non-magnetic medium they look just normal because "they" emit electromagnetic waves that alternate "their" image in our minds and change data in most types of recorders. The fun starts when you use VHS tapes because they are too sensitive to that waves and in turn they show "their" real face. If only for a moment.

these videos are so creepy, i don't know how anyone can stand to watch them. i've tried to watch three different people just react to them, i haven't even watched the actual videos by themself, and I just can't do it. usually if i watch someone reacting to scary videos like these, it makes me feel better and i'm not as freaked out because the other person is joking around and trying to lighten the mood, but this a whole different level. i think it's the fact that a lot of these things a close to humans which freaks me out. there's something about seeing a human like thing that you know isn't human. I also think that these videos cause paranoia as well because it feels like something that could happen in real life. just my thoughts
Same! I was absolutely terrified when I first saw the film theory on local 58. Whenever I watch these at 6:30 at night knowing bedtime is in like 3 hours, it’s best to remember that it’s all fake.
The scariest part when it comes to these types of stories is that (to me in this case), is there is always something that’s gonna make you jump waiting for you to reach the point makes you even more scared because of the suspense (like in this case, the alternate attacking Caesar’s mom)
Cesar that we heard on the phone is definitely an alternate and what we hear at 5:34 AM is it attacking his mom -The imagery shown of Cesar his image distorting seems to be pointing towards what we hear on the phone is an alternate not Cesar -Also his general lack of emotion on the phone from Cesar -If he is on call in an ambulance even if that was possible but we would probably hear some kind of sound (background noise) other than his voice maybe static or the car on the road (or what you usually hear while inside the car driving) -He also never confirms if the house was locked up -The specification of “check the back hallway” may suggest that it’s going to ambush mark there or it will follow him once he leaves the area, seeing Mark being it knowing that it’s him and it will then follow him home -Also by the fact that the the official report of an alternate is to not do anything other than ask questions until the caller stops answering shows that the government knows that the alternates know how to set traps like the one that sounded like Cesar may have set possibly confirming what I said in the previous point (Also fairly terrifying is that if some ones calling to report an alternate that they are pretty much confirmed to be one and that who ever they are impersonating is either a made up person, dead (or missing) due to the alternate or so where safe unaware of the impersonation of them happening at that moment)
It's already terrifying the fact that the authorities are instructed not to help, and even more so, if the person on thephone reporting an alternate encounter is an actual human... then that means they're pretty much doomed, while having a false hope that help will be on the way
See, I'm not usually scared of this stuff. I blinked a few times at Walten Files. But as a Christian who watched the cartoony bible retellings as a very young child and just has an emotional connection to these stories, I wasn't scared but I felt *very* disturbed. Okay. I didn't realize this either until I took my Wireless Networks class. We just entered 5G in mobile technology back in 2020. G stands for generation. 2010s was 4. 2000s was 3. 1990s was 2. 1980s was 1. The video in question was in 1992 during 2G. Mobile phones were considered big ticket items and small electronics financing was not as established as it is today. So, it makes sense that a guy who has enough money to set up his own in home camera security system would have enough interest in technology and affluence to be able to afford a cell phone in 1992.
Ok so “Cesar” had enough money to buy a cell phone ,so he might have not been inside “his” house Even today it’s almost impossible to not have any background noise come from your phone with 5G phones A 2G phone having absolutely no background noise (being inside a moving ambulance) makes it almost impossible to believe “Cesar” is telling the truth of his situation Combine that with the shadow on the “grave” right before the open door that is gone next time we see it and it’s almost certain that “Cesar” is an alternate
This series is horrifying. I watched a tiny bit while hiding in the comments and while someone else was reacting and I still had trouble sleeping for days. I am now completely terrified of being alone in my house, and i'm extremely scared of dark spaces now. My brother literally told me one line from it and it had this effect. I have no clue why i'm watching it again with matpat but IDK it'll be cool I guess. Wish me luck!
i love this, i love horror stories but they’re too scary for me to watch (i’m a wimp it’s ok), so having matpat to watch it with me brings a comforting presence that makes me not so scared. i hope he does more of these kinds of videos
Idk if anyone has said this but at 41:55 is the Baton Rouge killer. He is a serial killer in Louisiana. It said he stalked more than 7 women and killed them and the drawing in the timestamp is the police sketch of him and it is one of the most unsettling things in the mandela catalog just letting you know if you wanted to know.

I may have rambled.] I’ve see people talking about uncanny valley and exactly why we ever had to evolve this defense in the first place and I actually have an answer for this! Something that might’ve “looked like us, but wasn’t” were actually other dead humans. Corpses don’t tend to look right to our brains, and that’s why we often see them re-used in horror media. They’re universally scary. The reason we evolved this way is because if there’s a dead body nearby, then there’s almost certainly danger nearby. ESPECIALLY if the body is mangled, and disfigured. And the eyes get to us so much is because seeing wide open eyes on something unmoving, unblinking, staring, that means they didn’t have time to close their eyes before they died, and that increases the feeling of danger. Another reason I can think of that those eyes are so terrifying is because we weren’t apex predators. We were hunted. So something with wide, open, forward facing eyes dead set on you gives you the instinctual feeling that whatever it is, it wants to eat you. The contrast between eyes and darkness also forces your eyes to immediately focus and hone in on the one thing we can see, because that’s how our brains are built. The smiles I think give off that “It KNOWS it’s going to win.” emotion as well. Usually you don’t show signs of happiness entering a fight you have a fair chance in. That’s all! Sorry I went on a tangent but. You get the idea! Thanks for reading :-)
It's also for the same reason a chimp's smile is unsettling- it's not friendly. If a chimp smiles, it's a *threat*. Humans and other hominids used to do the exact same thing to each other... right before possibly eating each other. We evolved to be scared of non-human smiles because once upon a time that meant another hominid was probably looking at us and thinking "food".
The creator Alex said the next season (season one just wrapped up) wouldn't be analog horror anymore, or at least not strictly. It does not fit the story that well anymore and he does not want to limit himself to the genre. I can't wait for season 2!

"We are currently recieving-" I KNOW THAT VOICE. That was the same one saying that same message that was later in the video, but in the Foxy cartoon- the message to discard the tape immediately. I know the other two automated voices, as well. The one in Overthrone was the same one from Faith, and it was a voice synthesizer originally made for the Commodore 64. The "nothing is worth the risk" one was also used in Undertale, for a part of abc_123_a.ogg.

I think the biggest thing you missed in explaining the Mandela effect is WHY it's called that. The fact that there is a large portion of the population that believed they watched Nelson Mandela's funeral ON TV and news long before he even died. It was such a widespread phenomenon that they gave it a name.

It's natural to be disturbed by an image of a humanoid with lack of/indistiunguishable facial features, because facial recognition is such a key part to us as social beings.
That lack of information scares us and it's often assessed as strange/a threat, just like how the ambiguity of a stranger in a dark alleyway is immediately assessed as a threat.
It's also a natural response our brains make to determine whether or not someone is dead or diseased and that's also why the uncanny valley is a thing

One thing I'd like to point out: RUclipsr Wendigoon did a phenomenal, comprehensive analysis of this series, and actually got in contact with the creator. The creator of the series has said that the videos are uploaded out of order intentionally, and that the optimal viewing order is "The THINK Principle," "Mandela Catalogue Vol. 1" "Overthrone," and "Intruder Alert." Beyond those four Viewing order is unknown as the creator has not said anything about the new ones afaik
The creator has also said that there are pieces of the puzzle that have not been introduced yet. If I had any idea how long will it take for season two to arrive, I would advise MatPat to not make a theory until that is wrapped, but that ain't happening.

I think the alternates are an alien race attempting to invade earth, and I believe they are trying to manipulate religion in order to do so. Faith is a very strong thing, so its strategically smart to weaken that strength. The angels seen are lies made up by the alternates in order to weaken faith.

I almost made the mistake of watching this late at night. This is the single creepiest analog horror anything I've ever seen. Maybe it's because I'm religious but it managed to worm it's way into my soul, I can't even define why this scares me so much. With say, the Walten Files, I know what scares me, it's the violent shift from relaxed to chaos, Local 58 uses slow decent into madness, which isn't that spooky when you know where it's going. This- I don't know, they're are multiple creepy facets that I don't find creepy on their own, but together scare me like nothing else does. Props to the creator.

Another well known Mandela Effect is the Darth Vader reveal in Empire, where a lot of the time people say "Luke, I am your father" where in actuality Vader says "No, I am your father" in response to Luke's accusation of him killing his father
I feel like a carphone is the explanation there. The house is huge, has been broken into once, and has an advanced camera system, these people are presumably loaded.
The real question is how often alter encounters were completely unreported just because most people didn't have the resources for the authorities to figure out what happened.
I also think we're supposed to assume the guy in the car was filming his approach just in case. The text insert before he confronts the intruder looked like it was stuff he used a function on the camera to write, based on the digital font. If I had to guess, he had no writing implements around and was desperate to leave a last note before what he reasonably and correctly figured would be his death.
Completely unrelated, but as far as weird, instinctual kid-fears go, being afraid of something that looks too pointy is A+ sensible.

Theory: If you record "them" on non-magnetic medium they look just normal because "they" emit electromagnetic waves that alternate "their" image in our minds and change data in most types of recorders. The fun starts when you use VHS tapes because they are too sensitive to that waves and in turn they show "their" real face. If only for a moment.

these videos are so creepy, i don't know how anyone can stand to watch them. i've tried to watch three different people just react to them, i haven't even watched the actual videos by themself, and I just can't do it. usually if i watch someone reacting to scary videos like these, it makes me feel better and i'm not as freaked out because the other person is joking around and trying to lighten the mood, but this a whole different level. i think it's the fact that a lot of these things a close to humans which freaks me out. there's something about seeing a human like thing that you know isn't human. The scariest part when it comes to these types of stories is that (to me in this case), is there is always something that’s gonna make you jump waiting for you to reach the point makes you even more scared because of the suspense (like in this case, the alternate attacking Caesar’s mom)
Cesar that we heard on the phone is definitely an alternate and what we hear at 5:34 AM is it attacking his mom
-The imagery shown of Cesar his image distorting seems to be pointing towards what we hear on the phone is an alternate not Cesar
-Also his general lack of emotion on the phone from Cesar
-If he is on call in an ambulance even if that was possible but we would probably hear some kind of sound (background noise) other than his voice maybe static or the car on the road (or what you usually hear while inside the car driving)
-He also never confirms if the house was locked up
-The specification of “check the back hallway” may suggest that it’s going to ambush mark there or it will follow him once he leaves the area, seeing Mark being it knowing that it’s him and it will then follow him home
-Also by the fact that the the official report of an alternate is to not do anything other than ask questions until the caller stops answering shows that the government knows that the alternates know how to set traps like the one that sounded like Cesar may have set possibly confirming what I said in the previous point
(Also fairly terrifying is that if some ones calling to report an alternate that they are pretty much confirmed to be one and that who ever they are impersonating is either a made up person, dead (or missing) due to the alternate or so where safe unaware of the impersonation of them happening at that moment)

See, I'm not usually scared of this stuff. I blinked a few times at Walten Files. But as a Christian who watched the cartoony bible retellings as a very young child and just has an emotional connection to these stories, I wasn't scared but I felt *very* disturbed. Especially since the "angel" lied to the shepherds, that made me upset.

I love how it plays on the fear of how we find slightly off or seeing something slightly wrong bad or terrifying. Analog horror is genuinely scary to me. Love that it’s all coming back

Okay. I didn't realize this either until I took my Wireless Networks class. We just entered 5G in mobile technology back in 2020. G stands for generation. 2010s was 4. 2000s was 3. 1990s was 2. 1980s was 1. The video in question was in 1992 during 2G. Mobile phones were considered big ticket items and small electronics financing was not as established as it is today. So, it makes sense that a guy who has enough money to set up his own in home camera security system would have enough interest in technology and affluence to be able to afford a cell phone in 1992.

Even today it’s almost impossible to not have any background noise come from your phone with 5G phones
A 2G phone having absolutely no background noise (being inside a moving ambulance) makes it almost impossible to believe “Cesar” is telling the truth of his situation
Combine that with the shadow on the “grave” right before the open door that is gone next time we see it and it’s almost certain that “Cesar” is an alternate

This series is horrifying. I watched a tiny bit while hiding in the comments and while someone else was reacting and I still had trouble sleeping for days. I am now completely terrified of being alone in my house, and i'm extremely scared of dark spaces now. My brother literally told me one line from it and it had this effect. I have no clue why i'm watching it again with matpat but IDK it'll be cool I guess. Wish me luck!

Idk if anyone has said this but at 41:55 is the Baton Rouge killer. He is a serial killer in Louisiana. It said he stalked more than 7 women and killed them and the drawing in the timestamp is the police sketch of him and it is one of the most unsettling things in the mandela catalog just letting you know if you wanted to know.

I’ve see people talking about uncanny valley and exactly why we ever had to evolve this defense in the first place and I actually have an answer for this! Something that might’ve “looked like us, but wasn’t” were actually other dead humans. Corpses don’t tend to look right to our brains, and that’s why we often see them re-used in horror media. They’re universally scary. The reason we evolved this way is because if there’s a dead body nearby, then there’s almost certainly danger nearby. ESPECIALLY if the body is mangled, and disfigured. And the eyes get to us so much is because seeing wide open eyes on something unmoving, unblinking, staring, that means they didn’t have time to close their eyes before they died, and that increases the feeling of danger. Another reason I can think of that those eyes are so terrifying is because we weren’t apex predators. We were hunted. So something with wide, open, forward facing eyes dead set on you gives you the instinctual feeling that whatever it is, it wants to eat you. The contrast between eyes and darkness also forces your eyes to immediately focus and hone in on the one thing we can see, because that’s how our brains are built. The smiles I think give off that “It KNOWS it’s going to win.” emotion as well. Usually you don’t show signs of happiness entering a fight you have a fair chance in.

It's also for the same reason a chimp's smile is unsettling- it's not friendly. If a chimp smiles, it's a *threat*. Humans and other hominids used to do the exact same thing to each other... right before possibly eating each other. We evolved to be scared of non-human smiles because once upon a time that meant another hominid was probably looking at us and thinking "food".

The creator Alex said the next season (season one just wrapped up) wouldn't be analog horror anymore, or at least not strictly. It does not fit the story that well anymore and he does not want to limit himself to the genre. I can't wait for season 2!

I know the other two automated voices, as well. The one in Overthrone was the same one from Faith, and it was a voice synthesizer originally made for the Commodore 64. The "nothing is worth the risk" one was also used in Undertale, for a part of abc_123_a.ogg.
