I absolutely adore the movie regardless. However, I don’t like the out of place slapstick. I wouldn’t mind the gargoyles if they didn’t focus on comedy way too much. Also when Paris is literally burning to the ground and they sing the fun goofy song “A Guy Like You” (which don’t get me wrong, I love it. It’s just way out of place.)
Katalyst What you said makes sense for the big impact the voices leaving should have in the finale. As someone who loves this show, but still feels that the book needs fixing, I feel that this should be the last time we ever hear of the voices in Quasimodo’s head, in that they don’t appear again in the finale when Quasi kills Frollo. If the voices that always made him think positively, reason him to be kind, and who were pretty much trying to convince him to move on from the pain of not being loved romantically by Esmeralda(at least that’s what started this song in the original 1999 Berlin production of this show, as well as reaffirming that bad things happen when he leaves, always bad. I don’t feel that deep down, he would lie to himself that he’d make things worse, like Frollo would. Saying what he really feels would show his individuality and contrast to his master more, in the term of it being something he truly believes[as opposed to it being something Frollo would try to force himself and others to believe]) left for good, then it would ultimately leave him intellectually and emotionally vulnerable to the pain of Esmeralda dying that drives him to kill his Frollo, whom he realizes is no longer the good man who raised him, whom he cherish, but a weak and wicked monster whom God will smite(in fact I would argue that as Frollo decries his brother to be wicked and weak, that he compares him to Esmeralda, proclaiming that as God’s servant he must smite her. Then, Quasi would call him the weak and wicked one, and instead of saying the wicked shall not go unpunished, he says this: “And it is He(god), and he alone, who shall smite the wicked!” Then the chorus sings The wicked shall not go unpunished(this is just because I found speaking the line and then singing the line to be redundant, and I rather that “The wicked” come as a moment of “Oh, this is what he means” from the audience. Just my opinion on the lines of that scene)). When Quasi does grab Frollo, proclaiming that he’s very strong, and Frollo says “(Adding a slow and quiet “Please, Quasimodo, my child.”) You don’t want to hurt me.” It’s Quasimodo who, after a pause, should say to him “Yes. Yes, I do!” I say this because, even though Quasimodo does kind of call them back when he prepares the molted lead, having the voices tell him to kill Frollo seems off to me. Just because he’s realized the truth of his master, doesn’t mean he’s suddenly full of malice in his heart and mind to think something like this in his current emotional state. He’s clearly doing this out of blind rage(as in the novel), and whatever his master taught him(To which I REALLY wish the line during the chorus in the 1999 version(“You were always a good teacher, Master Frollo. A very good teacher!”) wasn’t cut and replaced with more needless narration!). That’s why after Frollo dies, he comes to his senses and realizes that “(Here, and(referring to Esmeralda) There lies all I have ever loved)”, and cries in despair. Then, after he sees Phoebus cry from trying to lift Esmeralda with broken arms, Quasi should climb up to one of the bells and(rather than ring it, which would surely hurt Phoebus ears he realizes), he bangs it muffled with his fists, AND THEN, as he hits the bell, the voices come back for a short farewell moment to tell him “the world is cruel, but there are times” and so forth, but in echos like passing ghosts(which I would believe would be SO chilling to hear on stage). But anyway, that’s how I feel, and I’m actually working on my own script for this show, incorporating elements from both this version, the 1999 version, borrowing necessary story elements from the novel, as well as developing new song ideas and placements based on the film score. Sorry if it turns out I read too deep into your initial comment though. But What do you think of what I’ve shared?
This is one of my favorite scores from the musical. It's such an emotional piece to work with and act through. This is one of the most emotionally taxing scenes that we as a cast have to put on for Hunchback (besides the Finale). People are shaken up every single time afterwards.
This is one of the greatest Broadway male solos that I have ever come across. I adore everything about this musical. I even used this as a live audition video on my channel. I'd love feedback, good and bad, on it if anyone cares to have a listen!

How I'd like to hear it before the song: *Hugo:* C'mon, Quasi! Snap out of it! *Victor:* Your friends are down there. *Quasi:* It's all my fault... *Laverne:* You gotta break these chains! *Quasi:* I can't. I tried. What difference would it make? In the middle of the song: *Victor:* But you can't let Frollo win! *Quasi:* He already _has..._ After the long "alone": *Hugo:* Sorry? You're givin' up? That's _it?_ *Laverne:* These chains aren't what's holding you back, Quasimodo! *Quasi:* Leave. Me. _Alone._ *Hugo:* _Okay. Okay, Quasi. We'll leave you alone._ *Victor:* _Alright, Quasimodo. We'll trouble you no longer._ *Laverne:* _You're right, my poor Quasi. We're only made o' stone._ *All three gargoyles:* _We just thought you were made of something... stronger._
This is undoubtedly the best song in the entire soundtrack. From the message, to Quasi's resolve, to the choir, to the music, and Michael Arden Himself Of all pieces from Michael Arden, this one singlehandedly outshines them all

0:29 is really 😞 This song is my absolute favorite! The feelings in this song are so real, and him talking to the saints and telling them he wanted them to stop telling him childish stories that get him in trouble, and that they were always lying to him. ( which is like lying to himself in a way if you look at it that way ;) ) and that he wanted to be “ made of stone” so that he couldn’t be hurt anymore, by Frollo or lost loves. It’s just so heartbreaking and raw, and I love the track behind it.
My favorite part of this song is when they sing "we just thought that you were made of something stronger..." the instrument part after that is so amazing.
0:51 1:01 1:14 1:17 1:26 1:27 The unison “Quasimodo” in my head phones gives me chills. 2:17 and everything after also gives me chills. The emotion in this song. I cannot find words to describe.

broadway actors have to make a minimum of like, $1,600 a month or week or something like that? and the cast for this show is GIANT, so there just isnt enough money to go around.
So many people have speaking lines that they would all have to be payed the same as a supporting actor. It's something along those lines. I wish it was on Broadway though, it's my favorite show
Kyrie Eleison (God Have Mercy On your Soul) While the city slumbered Quasimodo sat awake As the night crept pitilessly onward Not one word he uttered not one movement did he make Awaiting the inexorable dawn Kyrie Eleison.
I'd say if only years of booze and cigarettes didn't damage my vocal cords but who am I kidding, even before that there's no way I could've hit those notes 🤣
In the stage version, I think they should do away with the gargoyles and have those roles played by priests in the Cathedral. It would make sense for them to know of Quasimodo's existence (I mean, the bells clearly don't ring themselves right? Frollo doesn't climb all the way up to the bell tower with food everyday just to have his own private snack, right?). It would be cool if they supported him and encouraged him and counseled and taught him. They would be obviously be forbidden to leave the cathedral or interfere with outside affairs, as that would go against their vows. But Quasimodo wouldn't be bound by those vows, because he never took them. He isn't a priest. The only things keeping him in the cathedral are fear and obedience. It would be kind of cool if some of the priests were secretly his friend, and encouraged him to go out and live his own life, and especially to save innocent people from being murdered by Frollo who had obviously lost his mind and overstepped his authority. In "Made Of Stone", Quasimdo would be using the term stone figuratively, arguing that their seeming indifference and unwillingness to help stop the madness makes it seem as if they are made of stone. That obviously adds a huge layer of complexity to the story. More than anything though, having the "gargoyle" roles be changed to "priests", eliminates the clunky story-telling issues involved with the gargoyle costumes (usually just looks like regular humans in gray clothing), and with the gargoyles being alive or not (really confusing and distracting seeing them freeze, come alive, etc, especially since they stay moving and singing when Esmeralda is there too).
If you actually paid attention to the dialogue you would realize that instead of being the three gargoyles they had the people Quasimodo talk the statues of the saints that occupy Notre Dame, from the worlds like "saints of plaster" in this song, the first part of "Flight into Egypt", the part in the Finale where they say Quasimodo does want to hurt (kill) Frollo (something that priests would likely not support), or why there are female parts when in the 15th century women were not allowed to be priests. Once you realize that the chorus represents the statues of the saints it all makes sense about how they basically narrate most of the story they are the main parts of Notre Dame that would have seen the events unfold and are telling the audience the story. Really just reading information about the musical makes it clear that instead of gargoyles they have the saint statues. Try watching the show or listen to all of the songs.
The statues are technically supposed to be Quasimodo's imagination and inner voices. Made of Stone is him dismissing and giving up on the hope that he's built himself up to believe in throughout the musical. And if the statues were real people that encouraged him, that literally wouldn't make sense with the rest of the musical and Quasimodo's craving for positive, friendly human interaction which motivates a lot of his actions, including his infatuation with Esmeralda. AND if Quasimodo had real, human friends within the church that encouraged him to stop Frollo's schemes, that takes away from Quasimodo realizing Frollo's actions are wrong himself. He would just be doing as told and not really seeing and realizing why. I think if the statues were actual people, that would take away some of Quasimodo's character development

nah dude i would want them if they were like made of stone but because of his lonlyness his mind would trick him to belive they r real kind alike tom hanks on that movie with the voyleyball friend . but they made them real that break the irersion of the dramatic movie
From what I understand, the gargoyles leaving symbolizes his morals leaving him
Katalyst What you said makes sense for the big impact the voices leaving should have in the finale.
Then, Quasi would call him the weak and wicked one, and instead of saying the wicked shall not go unpunished, he says this:
“And it is He(god), and he alone, who shall smite the wicked!”
Then the chorus sings The wicked shall not go unpunished(this is just because I found speaking the line and then singing the line to be redundant, and I rather that “The wicked” come as a moment of “Oh, this is what he means” from the audience.
Yes, I do!”
I say this because, even though Quasimodo does kind of call them back when he prepares the molted lead, having the voices tell him to kill Frollo seems off to me.
But this wasn't on Broadway. At least I don't think it was.
Kamechan98 Very good point. I mistyped. It never did go to Broadway, but I meant one of the best Musical Male Solos ever written. Thanks for clarifying. :)
This reminds me so much of No Good Deed from Wicked. :-)
NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED
Bojan Teodosijevic I agree! I think a lot of the gargoyle songs sound very Wicked-esque
in fact, if I'm not wrong, Stephen Schwartz worked on both Wicked and Notre Dame =)
This song was written before "No Good Deed" in the 1999 Berlin production of Disney's the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
nah, not for me...this is better
And now I'm on my own
Never again to wonder what's out there
Let it remain unknown;
And my one human eye
Will evermore be dry
Until the day I die
As if I
Were made of stone!
yuishizu2 Goosebumps.
My favourite favourite part!! 🔥😭🔥🙏🏻
Its betray not dry
How I'd like to hear it before the song:
*Hugo:* C'mon, Quasi! Snap out of it!
*Victor:* Your friends are down there.
*Quasi:* It's all my fault...
*Laverne:* You gotta break these chains!
*Quasi:* I can't. I tried. What difference would it make?
In the middle of the song:
*Victor:* But you can't let Frollo win!
*Quasi:* He already _has..._
After the long "alone":
*Hugo:* Sorry? You're givin' up? That's _it?_
*Laverne:* These chains aren't what's holding you back, Quasimodo!
*Quasi:* Leave. Me. _Alone._
*Hugo:*
_Okay. Okay, Quasi. We'll leave you alone._
*Victor:*
_Alright, Quasimodo. We'll trouble you no longer._
*Laverne:*
_You're right, my poor Quasi. We're only made o' stone._
*All three gargoyles:*
_We just thought you were made of something... stronger._
This is undoubtedly the best song in the entire soundtrack. From the message, to Quasi's resolve, to the choir, to the music, and Michael Arden Himself
Of all pieces from Michael Arden, this one singlehandedly outshines them all
This straight up sounds like something from wicked, and I love it
im-so-2460-done
This was in Berlin before Wicked 😜
Ashleigh Mcmaster Wicked’s composer co-composed this.
mythic_fci Wicked’s composer, Stephen Schwartz, wrote the lyrics. The music is full Alan Menken theatricality!
We all agree that “as if I” is masterful but “just leave me alone” r u serious??? That moment is so powerful
1:30 and 1:42 listen to the piano part!
It’s so gorgeous and makes me want to play it myself. I love how in some parts the piano really goes hard at it
I love Michael Arden's voice💙💙💙💙💙💙
can i marry his voice?
I performed Hunchback of Notre Dame in a community production almost 7 full months ago and started it way sooner. Everything about the show still chills me. I love the sound track. Definitely a show I'd be willing to do a second time .
(I was a member of the choir)
His talent, unbelievable. It's so impactful, I gasp every fricking time
Man. It is soooooo very clear that this music was written by the same man who wrote "No Good Deed" from Wicked. Thank you, Stephen Schwartz, for the chills.
Haha funnily it wasn’t even! It’s his lyrics though! The music is by Alan Menken (who composed like every golden age Disney movie ever as well as little shop of horrors and a ton of other stuff)
I can't believe this song got cut from the Disney film, this song was excellent and had lots of emotion to it.
It wasn't. It was made for the musical.
@@juanrisa945 gotcha
It was never in the Disney movie. This is a new song made for the show.
@@VerisimilitudeFilms1 I know that, but I'm just saying it would've been good to hear it in the Disney movie
@@rickymoranjr9609 Gotcha. I misunderstood you because you said "I can't believe they cut this out"
Those final notes…gave me CHILLS! Sang with such POWER, passion & seemingly effortless clarity. BEYOND astounding!
This man. This show. One of my favorites to have performed in. This soundtrack is my life
it's only the beginning part, but the "awaiting the inexorable dawn," part gives me shivers.
The "Kyrie eleison" echo afterwards is CHILLING.
If they are going to make a live action of Disney's Hunchback... PLEASE INCLUDE THIS SONG!!!!!!
And if they do, I want a movie adaptation of the musical cause I would KILL to see this on the film
LOVE LOVE LOVE Michael Arden!!!
0:29 is really 😞
This song is my absolute favorite!
"As if *I* !"
chills
we did this show at my school, this was my favorite scene... it gives me goosebumps every time
Why does this song break my heart every time
michael arden is incredible
My theatre group held a concert for musical theatre sopranos, and I sang this.....the octave up.....it was so much fun!
It’s criminal that this song wasn’t in the original 😂
So beautiful and so powerful
3:09
3:13
3:17
These three notes feel like Quasimodo sinking lower. To his knees, to his palms, and then his head.
i adore the shows that michael directs, but his singing and acting is INSANE
My favorite part of this song is when they sing "we just thought that you were made of something stronger..." the instrument part after that is so amazing.
Michel Arden is the most incredible Broadway voice.....
I like how this shows that all it takes is one person to make you feel like crap even when others don't think so.
2:32 gives me chills every time
i saw this in Japan, gekidan Shiki. It's sooo amazing!!!!
I love how deep this song is! It’s just so amazing and really hits to the heart/soul. This is by far my favorite track💕

The emotion in this song. I cannot find words to describe.
Michael's voice is so strong omg (singing voice)
It’s songs like these that make me wish I could sing.
Man that is one amazing voice and range
I love the whole part after the gargoyles starting at 3:20, especially the emotion behind "and my one human eye"
Just found out a local theater is showing this next April/May. More than a year away, and yet I cannot frikkin wait.
Rock Sauron My Theatre Company I'm in is showing it July 14-23.
My school PCCA did this. It was amazing
yesterday i was singing this, and i found myself belting and holding every single note.... including the Bb which i've never been able to full-voice.... i was actually shaking
Every time i sing this, I feel the exact same thing.
that’s very cool, pretty impressive too. Not a lot of people can hit those notes.
This is my favorite musical, and my favorite song from said musical
This gave me chills omg! 😍
[VARIOUS STATUES & GARGOYLES, spoken]
Quasimodo you must try to free yourself!
The girl needs your help!
[QUASIMODO, spoken]
Quiet! Go away
[STATUE, spoken]
You're the only one who can save her now
[QUASIMODO, spoken]
You know what happens when I try to help. I only make things worse
[STATUES & GARGOYLES, spoken]
You don't believe that!
[QUASIMODO]
(spoken)
How do you know what I believe?
(sung)
What do you know of me?
What do you know of all the things I feel?
You're only made of stone
Who is it that you see
Instead of seeing what I am for real-
This twisted flesh and bone?
[GARGOYLE, spoken]
Quasimodo, it wasn't your fault-
[QUASIMODO]
You're a liar!
With ev'ry new excuse you try out
You only make me want to cry out
"Would that I were
Made of stone like you..."
[STATUES & GARGOYLE, spoken]
You don't mean that!
Just take some time to-
[QUASIMODO]
You give such good advice
So why has not one single word you've said
Been any help at all?
[STATUES & GARGOYLES, spoken]
Quasimodo-
[QUASIMODO]
And you who sound so nice
The more your dreams and fancies fill my head
The farther that I fall
Shut my brain down!
If I were senseless, I'd prefer it
Another gargoyle on this turret
Spitting rain down
To the stones below
I've wasted my faith
Believing in saints of plaster
But the only one worth believing in
Was my master
He's the one who never lied
He told me it was cruel outside
He told me how I had to hide
His words were cold as stone
But they were true
Not like you
Take all the dreams you've sown
Take all your lies
And leave me alone!
[STATUE]
All right, Quasimodo
We'll leave you alone
[GARGOYLE]
All right, Quasimodo
We'll trouble you no longer
[STATUE]
You're right, Quasimodo
We're only made of stone
[STATUES & GARGOYLES]
We just thought that you were made
Of something stronger...
[QUASIMODO]
And now I'm on my own
Never again to wonder what's "out there"
Let it remain unknown
And my one human eye
Will ever more be dry
Until the day I die
As if I
Were made of stone!
I'm sitting here, mouth agape, getting ready to download this playlist and maladaptive daydream
I get chills every time
I wish I had a better voice so I could belt this out in the shower properly
3:37 CHILLS.
I sang the whole song!!! I thought I'd pass out but I did it!!!
got me cryin in the club
I miss being in this musical
Katalyst What part? I bet it was a beautiful experience!
If this song isn't in the live-action remake, I will riot.
this gives me Santa fe , or no good deed vibes
his voice is so powerful it hurts my ears! I forgot that Quasimodo could have such a strong resonant voice! Whenever he talks in this type of voice, everybody in the whole house can hear him! Besides this voice makes him sound older and more manly. I don’t know I just picked up on that.
Singing this in my voice lessons right now
This is very Wicked.
Funny you should say that! Stephen Schwartz wrote the lyrics to both this musical and Wicked!
And this isn't on Broadway why?!
Because life's not fair :(((((((((((((((((((
it's got something to do with how big the choir is. there's some kind of issue with (liability?) insurance, from what i understand. :(
Masaz because "spongebob the musical" is mkre important😤😤
broadway actors have to make a minimum of like, $1,600 a month or week or something like that? and the cast for this show is GIANT, so there just isnt enough money to go around.
So many people have speaking lines that they would all have to be payed the same as a supporting actor. It's something along those lines. I wish it was on Broadway though, it's my favorite show
CHILLS
Those last two notes are amazing. Kind of all I have to say here. And the rest of the song, of course :)
Brillant.
This will be a good song for the hunchback live action movie
This is my drug.

god. DAMN.
Okay...I've learned the ASL for "Out There"...I think this song's gonna be next on the list!
Anyone know what they're saying from 0:00-0:24? It's a little hard for me to make out some of what they say. Don't know why.
Kyrie Eleison (God Have Mercy On your Soul)
While the city slumbered
Quasimodo sat awake
As the night crept pitilessly onward
Not one word he uttered not one movement did he make
Awaiting the inexorable dawn
Kyrie Eleison.
So powerful!
if the live action isnt just an adaptation of this musical , i swear to fucking god. If this song isnt in there ??? there will be blood.

No one:
Literally no one:
Absolutely no one:
no one at all:
me: “as if IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII. were made oF STOOOOOOOONNNNNNNEEEEEE”
It will hopefully be me too considering I'm auditioning for Quasi and am doing a cut from this song lol
Liam McDonald oh awesome!! I wish you lots of luck!!
I'd say if only years of booze and cigarettes didn't damage my vocal cords but who am I kidding, even before that there's no way I could've hit those notes 🤣
This is so beautiful to me its like the male version of defying gravity its so hard and so high i so want to do it but i cant
That fucking high note is viscerally poignant. I felt that in my gut.
AWorldWithoutTenors Actually in the stage version they had them as saint statues not gargoyles
Am I the only one hearing No Good Deed from Wicked?
This has no good deed from wicked vibes
