    The voice in some of them is so flat and dissengaged that the note just feels impactless
    Arden for example has a whole acting technique behind his singing, so the note feels like an emotional climax

    0:00, 0:19 Michael Arden, the OG, best overall, best first lines, best acting
    1:22, 1:42 Rich Giordano, really good "I" note
    2:04, 2:20 F Michael Haynie, I really love the way he says "out there," great vibrato
    2:41, 3:01 Brady Love, best "were made of stone" (3:08), and personal fave, other than Michael ofc
    3:29, 3:42 Kyle Dalsimer, clearest "I" note, him and Rich sound very similar, I like it
    4:57, 5:15 E.J. Cardona, really emotional and powerful, also love Joshua Castille's acting so much
    7:08, 7:28 Bobby Cassell, grittiest "I" note
    7:52, 8:08 Jack Cappadona, second best vibrato
    9:04, 9:20 Julian Decker, best vibrato, also that C, Jesus

      @kirajlerner 2 года назад +6

      @@anygameatanytimetime8995 Amen! OG! It is to laugh. Drew was there singing his heart out creating the theatrical role literally decades before any of the talented singers here even knew this specific song existed. And he sang the last note in the stratosphere where it belongs, sounding young and vulnerable (unlike Arden--who is extremely gifted as a singer but whose voice is not one of a sheltered, frightened, broken young man--more like a Phantom than Quasimodo). Drew also pours out his soul more than any of this batch (good though many of them were) even when we don't have the benefit of seeing him as clearly due to the poor video quality. Finally, the last note is meant to be a _cri de coeur_ for Quasi and Drew manages to sound both beautiful and ugly, pure and bitter, vulnerable and furious. It's a fantastic performance.

    • @elizabethmac1475
      @elizabethmac1475 7 месяцев назад

      @@kirajlerner I just went and watched Drew's version. It's very good! However, I think as to whether he or Arden is better has to do with personal preference. Personally, I like Arden's rich, resonating voice. It makes it more believable when he says "I am very strong" to Frollo at the end. Quai is a big guy, and a bit of a deeper, fuller voice fits that to me.
      Again, personal preference, but I prefer the last "stone" to be the lower note instead of the soft, high one Drew did (which highlights, as you said, his youth and vulnerablity). However, imo to go from the high note to this low one is powerful because it sounds as if Quasimodo has given up his innocent, joyful way of viewing the world, and is resolutely "grounding" himself, resigning himself to the tragedy of life. And the almost guttural sound from this note fit Quasi's grief and despair imo.

    Michael Arden for me is the best of the best Quasimodo portrayals, but there are two that should be given a nod for outstanding portrayals as well: Christian Santiago of TKA’s Page Family Center for the Arts, West Palm Beach (believe it or not, a high school production, but watch and be amazed!) and an actor who first portrayed the character in a raw, complex style in the German version of Hunchback. I think his was the very first production of the live musical. I will link both in com boxes below. Watch for Chris Santiago to go places in the future. While in high school he won an award from society that works to preserve jazz. I have no doubts this young person is going to be a well known singer.

Almost all of them opt up to the high C at the end like Decker does, but in better vocal quality and control. The older version with Drew Sarich (he was on Broadway as well but started in Germany/Austria) also has a very nice ring to it with a very quiet high C in head voice at the end.

    Only the last two performers were able to achieve the notes the way they were originally performed by Drew Sarich in 1999's Der Glockner von Notre Dame, the more superior version of the musical, imo. Watch the way he does the song. That's the ultimate performance. It feels like almost everyone in this compilation is singing at the song. They aren't really letting the audience absorb the words Quasimodo is saying in that moment. He is giving up. I also HATE how musicals nowadays make the accompaniment speed through the material at a particular tempo the entire way through. No time is given for true emotion the way they used to in songs like If I Can't Love Her and A Change in Me in BATB, and Music of the Night in Phantom. Or even Wicked, when it's on tour. It's all rushed. Everyone has to just sloooow down a little with some of these pieces

      @@leaf1934 Hey! So we had pre-recorded/canned music, so there was no option to have the pit wait for me to come off the note. The cast really liked the extra Bb4 I added on "Of" so it was worth it to sacrifice a few beats!
