    I love when the chorus changes to “hunt down the gypsy and the soldier.” I like imagining the chorus slowly becomes a long list of people Frollo has a grudge against “hunt down the gypsy, and the soldier, and the baker, and the blacksmith, and the farmer, and that one guy that looked at me funny”

      The only reason it isn't on Broadway is cause the asshole Broadway heads don't want to have to pay every single person that that it requires to make this musical.... 150 people are needed for the singing ALONE that's not counting stage crew and the orchestral people. It makes no sense because they might spend a shit load of money on it yes cause this is a HUGE production but it would make so much more money than it would cost to spend it. The reason this music is so powerful is because of numbers. You get 150 powerful singers all together singing different harmonies ALONG with a large gorgeous live orchestra????? It's breathtaking. And people will pay top dollar to see that. This is how my own upcoming musical "Fairview's Tavern" will work.

      I know this comment is two years old but I thought you might find this interesting. The original title of the book is actually “Notre-Dame de Paris” and then the opera of the book, written by the original author, was called “La Esmeralda.” Esmeralda is the more central character to the plot and everything kind of happens around her.
      It’s not until the English translation in 1833 that the book became more known by its English title of “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.”

  • @AmyASpaceOdyssey

    This is the scariest song in this musical for me because of its optimistic tone. When we are shown villains, we are shown their viewpoint from the perspective of other characters, but in this song, we are shown Frollo and his soldiers singing cheerfully about murdering someone who we know is innocent. This cheerful tone makes it clear to the audience how evil Frollo's rhetoric is. I remember hearing that the most evil villains in media are usually the ones who think they are the heroes. Frollo absolutely fits that description.

    • @wandanemer2630
      @wandanemer2630 5 лет назад +38

      Absolutely true!
      The only moment when we're shown the true horror of Frollo's actions is at the very end with the chorus repeating Hellfire. Only then we finally see that the city is burning and Frollo is now fully insane and can't be stopped.
      It's terrifying.

    • @ianrose6218
      @ianrose6218 3 года назад +9

      I always love characters like this. Granted, from knowing what Claude Frollo is like and what his goals are makes me hate him, but if I didn't know any better, I might get swept up in the hunt too. That makes it so terrifying to think about.
      I just love how the musical hit that perfect balance between condemning his actions and showing how people blindly support him because they don't care to look any deeper than what he tells them.

    • @CreepDestroyer
      @CreepDestroyer 2 года назад +3

      I'm playing as Frederic soon, and I sing this song, and it's not talking about murdering, it's talking about arresting, how do we know this? It's not officially decided until Frollo is slapped after the "for pity's sake LOVE ME" line. When they catch her, I escort them off, and "Arrest the gypsy and the traitor."

    • @AmyASpaceOdyssey
      @AmyASpaceOdyssey 2 года назад +3

      @@CreepDestroyer While it is true that Frollo is currently just trying to arrest Esmeralda, deep down he wants her dead if she doesn’t have any affection for him. Either way, this song comes from the point of view of somebody who is completely insane and pursuing a malicious goal.

      Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!
      It was gorgeous onstage, and absolutely breathtaking to see live (and I feel so blessed to have done so, now that it's not going to Broadway), but by the gods, imagine what they could do with a film version of this! It would be absolutely epic! I'm getting chills just thinking about it.

    • @KP-ej7gc
      @KP-ej7gc 8 лет назад +41

      You are so lucky!!! I'd been saying for YEARS that they should make it a stage show- and when they finally did I didn't get to see it. :( And I just feel like since Disney is doing all of these live-action remakes of the old classics that they could TOTALLY do Hunchback justice. Especially after seeing what they did with Cinderella and how Beauty and the Beast trailer looks. Plus Hunchback has this new amazing score- it would be perfect!

    • @TheaterRaven
      @TheaterRaven 8 лет назад +27

      Yeah! Some of the movies they're bringing to live action seem like cash grabs, like there's not much they could do to differentiate the original from a live action film, but they're remaking it to introduce it to new generations. Why not just re-release the original animated movies in theaters for free? Like, do we REALLY need "The Lion King" in live action when the oriignal is such a gorgeous masterpiece?
      So, yeah, I'm not too crazy about how many classics they're re-filming as live action, but I do think some warrant it. Especially "Mulan" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". And as for "Hunchback", imagine if they were able to shoot it in Notre Dame itself. How amazing would that be?
      I hope, if they do it as a film, they cast the original cast memebers instead of roping in big Hollywood names who can't sing.

    • @KP-ej7gc
      @KP-ej7gc 8 лет назад +19

      If they actually filmed it in Notre Dame I would freak out!! No I totally get what you mean. For example, the Jungle Book remake just seemed really odd to me- not to mention that they already made a live-action version in the 90s that was WAY better.
      Ugh. I just want it to be a movie already!

    • @TheaterRaven
      @TheaterRaven 8 лет назад +20

      Me, too! And then, Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken need to do a musical of Victor Hugo's book, "The Man Who Laughs" and we'll have a trio of Hugo musical epicness--"Les Mis", "Hunchback", and TMwL. In short, "The Man Who laughs" is set in 18th century England and tells the story of a doomed romance between Gwynplaine, a disfigured clown, and Dea, a blind girl. And it's done as only Victor Hugo could write it and it would make a wonderful musical. I've written a stage play of it, but if Schwartz and Menken got their hands on it . . . oh, I can only imagine.

    歌詞
    Esmeralda
    By royal edict, warrant of arrest:
    The gypsy known as Esmeralda
    Being under suspicion of sorcery, witchcraft
    And the arts of Hell
    Anyone found harboring or helping her
    Will be charged as well
    Frollo: Hunt down the gypsy Esmeralda
    And vanish in the night
    Don′t let her flee
    And vanish in the night
    These are the flames of Esmeralda
    While she is free
    Your torches will burn bright...
    Phoebus & Soldiers: Hunt down the gypsy Esmeralda
    Don't let her flee
    And vanish in the night
    These are the flames of Esmeralda
    While she is free
    Our torches will burn bright...
    Frollo: Have no fear, my boy... We will find her and capture her!
    The wicked shall not go unpunish-ed
    The heart of the wicked is of little worth
    The wicked shall not go unpunish-ed...
    Congregant: All through the city, at more fevered pitch
    Than the bells of Notre Dame...
    Phoebus: Two gold pieces for the one who leads us to Esmeralda.
    Congregant: Frollo′s men sought Esmeralda, the witch
    With the might of Notre Dame...
    Phoebus: Four gold pieces for the one who leads us to Esmeralda.
    Congregants: Till at last, they were told of a brothel
    Where they sometimes hid gypsies from harm...
    But the madam, that whore
    Denied it and swore by the Saints
    The Saints of Notre Dame...
    Soldiers: We're looking for La Esmeralda.
    Madam: Never heard of her.
    Frollo: If you want your house to remain standing, give us the gypsy girl.
    Madam: I know nothing of gypsy girls.
    Frollo: Very well. We'll set fire to it. Burn it. Did you hear me, Captain?
    Phoebus: And he held the torch
    That crackled like the gypsy′s voice...
    Frollo: Are you disobeying a direct order?
    Phoebus: And he knew this was the moment
    He must make a choice...
    Frollo: I knew it. She′s bewitched you, too. You would throw away a promising career? Captain? Carry out the order!
    God help the outcasts
    They look to you still
    God help the outcasts
    Or nobody will
    Phoebus: God help the outcasts
    Or nobody will!
    Frollo': Coward! Traitor! Gypsy′s pawn!
    You're relieved of your patrol
    Phoebus: Consider it my highest honor.
    Frollo: Kyrie Eleison
    God have mercy on your soul!
    Arrest Captain Phoebus.
    Esmeralda: No!
    Frollo: You see?! There she is!
    Good people of Paris
    I′ve heard the calling of the Lord
    The time has come to take our city back
    We'll save our Paris
    Expunge this heathen Gypsy Horde
    Before we′re overrun, we must attack!
    Frollo, Soldiers & Congregation:
    Hunt down the gypsy and the soldier
    Don't let them flee
    And vanish in the night
    We'll find the gypsy and the soldier
    While they are free
    Our torches will burn bright
    Quasimodo: Fire! Fire! Smoke and flame!
    Esmeralda, where are you?
    In this dark, I call your name
    Is that all that I can do?
    Phoebus: What have I done for Esmeralda?
    Why do I hear her words inside my head?
    And still I think of Esmeralda
    With my career and body left for dead
    Quasimodo: Out there somewhere she is lost...
    Phoebus & Frollo: Somewhere she is lost...
    Quasimodo: Esmeralda!
    Quasimodo, Frollo, Phoebus, Soldiers & Congregation: Where is the girl called Esmeralda?
    The flames grow tall
    And sharp as fleurs-de-lis
    Misericordia
    Quasimodo, Frollo, Phoebus, Soldiers & Congregation: All Paris burns for Esmeralda
    And still it all
    Comes down to her and me
    Et dona nobis pacem
    Frollo: The devil dwells in Esmeralda
    Quasimodo & Phoebus: Oh Esmeralda, Oh Esmeralda
    Frollo′: Resist his charm...
    Quasimodo & Congregation: Wake up the city and sound the alarm!
    Frollo & Soldiers: Wake up the city and sound the alarm!
    Wake up the city and sound the alarm!
    Frollo, Clopin & Congregation: These are the flames of Esmeralda
    Dona nobis pacem
    Frollo, Clopin & Congregation: The night is singing
    Dona nobis pacem
    Frollo, Clopin & Congregation: Of Esmeralda
    Dona nobis pacem
    Frollo, Clopin & Congregation: Even the bells
    Sing the bells
    Frollo, Clopin & Congregation: Of
    Sing the bells of
    Frollo, Clopin & Congregation: Notre Dame!
    Of Notre Dame!

    I was eight years old when the original Disney film came out, and it introduced me to the Victor Hugo story as a whole. As someone who was a tomboy during her childhood and who never liked the trope of a woman just sitting around waiting for a man to save her, needless to say, Esmeralda was my girl growing up. And when I was fortunate enough to see this show live at La Jolla Playhouse as an adult, Esmeralda's character arc, and this song especially, took me back to the same love and role-model-admiration I'd felt for her as a little girl. It was simply indescribable, the experience of seeing it enacted out live before you. Rock on, Esmeralda. No matter how hard they try, they won't be able to hunt you down, beautiful, free, flaming spirit that you are. Blessed be, dearest sister. )O(

    I would like to think that this song shows how Esmeralda affected the lives of many people. Like how Cosette did the same thing to Valjean, Fantine, the Thenardiers (the whole family), and Marius. I don't think she changed Javert's life since they've never met. But from what i read on quora she did, just indirectly.

    • @wandanemer2630
      @wandanemer2630 5 лет назад +9

      True! This song is kind of like the Hunchback's version of One Day More! Just like a Place of Mirracles is like the trio of Eponine, Cosette and Marius in A Heart Full of Love... and Esmeralda's Someday is like a more hopeful version of I Had a Dream!
      I REALLY think that was inttentional. Since both Hunchback and Les Mis are Victor Hugo's works, it's a brilliant idea to draw similarities between them, as if they both happenned in the same universe.

    • @matiasluukkanen7718
      @matiasluukkanen7718 5 лет назад +1

    All I need to say is that I listen to the entire musical a lot and I'm proud that I've started to pull Quasi's notes pretty well. In the beginning my voice would crack a lot, but I've found out when and how to take a breath before it starts and I pull the note without a crack. I'm breathless after, but I still continue. Quasi's actor is the best I swear, since the man is actually deaf and can only lip read and do sign language. Yet he's one of my favorite one-time actors, since I've only seen him here ever.
