I wear a hernia support belt while I'm waiting for surgery in July. But for reassurance, I had my left inguinal hernia repaired 7 years ago, with mesh, and it has been absolutely fine. If I didn't have the belt I would not be able to walk very far before the pain comes on, not even to go shopping for necessities like food.

i was diagnosed with a hernia by my gp in July 2022, i was booked for an appointment to see the specialist in dec 2022, after a thorough examination she said i had a double hernia!! and i would go on the waiting list( public health care) for surgery. I dont feel any pain or discomfort! but was told to refrain from exercise!! this is frustrating. I do though do a daily 6 mile walk. So exercise is a no no??

Yeah, my advice is definitely have it repaired. Although, as the doctor said, the risk of strangulation is very low, the hernia can get mighty painful. I put off getting mine seen to last year, because the hospitals were overwhelmed with Covid patients.
Your holey knees remind me of my inguinal finding its way through my fascia and other abdominal membranes to burst forth beneath the skin in the size of a 1/2 grapefruit sometimes. I'm getting my right inguinal hernia repaired sometime in July 2021. No firm date yet because of the enormous backlog caused by Covid. The main symptom is a burning, sharp pain in the groin. Very unpleasant, and I can't wait to get it fixed. I had the left side repaired 7 years ago, also an open repair, so I kinda know what to expect. The recovery will be painful, especially for the first 24 to 48 hours, but at least it's pain to tell you you're healing, not still waiting!

This gentleman had an ultrasound scan recently, which confirmed the presence of bilateral tiny inguinal hernias. His symptoms are somewhat unusual , in the sense that its unilateral and that it is somewhat higher than the inguinal canal. I have advised this gentleman that whilst is surgery indeed possible, it is likely that some or all of his current symptoms may remain after the operation. i read that a lot of hernias are actually fatty tissue, etc and not intestines.....did you get a scan to confirm ? i was able to keep my indirect inguinal hernia under control for a year with abdominal exercises (lost 6kg) but i slacked off a couple months and gained 4kg......and my hernia got worse - descending to the scrotum.........contemplating surgery but had read all the bad news with meshes.....i doubt the hospitals in my country will do the Shouldice repair method
My mesh repair seven years ago has been absolutely fine. Most general surgeons are able to do a good repair, but you really do need to get it done. I've seen images of hernias 80 years ago that have got as big as a football.

I'm going to "try" mowing my back lawn in a minute, because the grass has grown so much what with all the rain. Dunno how long it will be till I start getting symptoms. But since the beginning of 2021 the RIGHT side has developed an inguinal hernia. Your holey knees remind me of my inguinal finding its way through my fascia and other abdominal membranes to burst forth beneath the skin in the size of a 1/2 grapefruit sometimes. I have had it for 13 years. I do NOT want a mesh due to the inconsistent results of infections and sometimes lifelong ongoing pain. My first hernia was 57 years ago when I was 9. I still have the scar with holes that collect sebum sometimes. I created a holster on a weapon belt with a therapy squeeze ball inside the holster and I place it over the abdominal hole. He was talking about a new procedure where some kind of robotic device actually takes over, probably with _guidance_ by the surgeon. I'm getting my right inguinal hernia repaired sometime in July 2021. No firm date yet because of the enormous backlog caused by Covid. The main symptom is a burning, sharp pain in the groin. Very unpleasant, and I can't wait to get it fixed. I had the left side repaired 7 years ago, also an open repair, so I kinda know what to expect. The recovery will be painful, especially for the first 24 to 48 hours, but at least it's pain to tell you you're healing, not still waiting!

@@lovebug8482 Hi, thanks for asking. Yes, I had an open hernia repair under local anaesthesia on 27 July 21. Recovery during the first few days was extremely painful, but after 6 days I was able to sleep for a few hours at night. Now two months later I am pretty much fully recovered and pain free, but I am still exercising caution when lifting things. I am so glad to have had it done. I was waiting for an appointment since early March 2021.

I reviewed this gentleman in my outpatient clinic at the highgate hospital this morning. This gentleman had an ultrasound scan recently, which confirmed the presence of bilateral tiny inguinal hernias.
His symptoms are somewhat unusual , in the sense that its unilateral and that it is somewhat higher than the inguinal canal.
I have advised this gentleman that whilst is surgery indeed possible, it is likely that some or all of his current symptoms may remain after the operation.
I have urged him to consider his options carefully. Should he ,in the light of his deliberations feel that he would wish to undergo a laparoscopic bilateral inguinal hernia repair then I will add him to my operation schedule.

i read that a lot of hernias are actually fatty tissue, etc and not intestines.....did you get a scan to confirm ?
i was able to keep my indirect inguinal hernia under control for a year with abdominal exercises (lost 6kg) but i slacked off a couple months and gained 4kg......and my hernia got worse - descending to the scrotum.........contemplating surgery but had read all the bad news with meshes.....i doubt the hospitals in my country will do the Shouldice repair method
My mesh repair seven years ago has been absolutely fine. Most general surgeons are able to do a good repair, but you really do need to get it done. I've seen images of hernias 80 years ago that have got as big as a football.

@@worstalentscout For me it's always far more comfortable to sit or lie down. When standing, I never quite know when the pain will start. I'm going to "try" mowing my back lawn in a minute, because the grass has grown so much what with all the rain. Dunno how long it will be till I start getting symptoms. Right now I'm sat in my recliner typing this on a tablet and I can't feel the hernia at all. Right, here goes...!

@@worstalentscout The surgery 7 years ago was on the LEFT side. That repair was 100% successful and gives me no pain whatsoever, whether sitting or standing. But since the beginning of 2021 the RIGHT side has developed an inguinal hernia. I felt slight pain occasionally on the right side from about the middle of 2020,but because of Covid all hospitals, doctors and nurses were overwhelmed with treating Covid patients. Since early March 2021 the right inguinal hernia steadily got worse and finally I'm now awaiting surgery in July. I've just added an addendum to my earlier comment to make it clearer.
