- It's Japan VS Germany in the battle of the rear engine cars! We had $10,000 each and ended up with an MR2 and an old VW Moong Buggy. After much fixing and modifications, these two rear engine nuggets will go through a series of challenges... and the WINNER TAKES ALL!
Will the mighty JDM MR2 take the ultimate prize, or will the modified VW Beetle take the victory with it's heavily tuned 2.1L engine? We're about to find out!

Seeing Marty just having fun in this car that was a complete pain in the ass every step of the way is so nice.
That's the real victory here. Nothing beats that feeling when you finally get to just drive after fighting the car to make it work.
As an mr2 owner I can verify that they are reliable and so much fun to drive!

I'd like to think that they just left him stranded there with his new non-functional moon buggy, with no easy way to get home with it. It's funnier that way.

The moon buggy was sweet, but it brought a smile to my face to see Marty having so much fun in the MR2 after all the frustrating hours working on MrPoo.

Can we have an autopsy report on the Vadge ? Like why did it blow the rocker covers ? Was there too much crank case pressure ? Where did all the metal soup come from ?
After the first drag run, Marty spotted something had fallen off the Vadge but didnt say anything and let her go for another run. That's when is got f'ed.

You could move the crank 1/2 inch and spin the main bearings by hand while the case is torqued.
Never stopped running though.

The 2180 probably was too tight.
The oil was gold when they had the rocker cover off before that. It was already F'ed.

I had one (an AW11) for a few years and yessss, every day after finishing work I practically ran to my car out of excitement to drive it home. I'd still have it now but the rust gods took it.

I was totally ready to watch the MR2 dominate the moon buggy. But then I just felt bad for Moog.
But now I'm happy for Isaac
Oh come on! You've done a ridiculous job in tuning this old VW engine and that's why it's having issues now... Just remember how problematic the engine of that MR2 was and how much work went into making it work. I believe you've all done this on purpose so that it could look like the VW is "unreliable" and all sort of this bullshit and also because you both don't like VWs for some unknown for me apparent reason. Let me just remind you which car of them both doesn't stop and which car's ABS doesn't work. Talking about reliability, it's definitely not that Japanese funny thing the winner. If you've really made up all this on purpose, it just says it all about your reputation... Speaking of the engines, we saw at what condition the stock MR2 engine was at the beginning - absolute disaster. The VW engine was heavily modified and further touched by you which lead to this reasult... If this VW engine was stock and untouched by anybody, it's life expiry would have been at least as much as two if these MR2s and even more. Your test in this video doesn't say anything. I do know that if the VW engine hadn't been modified, that buggy thing wouldn't have had any chances of winning, but I'm afraid the opposite happened too - making something which was working properly totally wasted!

Is it just me, or do old aircooled flat engines always sound like they are about to rattle to pieces? Reminds me of my Subaru at anything over 3500k rpm lol
not just you, it IS boxer engines. 4,500 rpm is flailing them hard, 5k and they start shredding themselves, don't care how well built and balanced, built over 100 hp and reliability goes down the toilet quickly, especially if you're flailing them!
That "I'm about to Blow Up" sound was standard equipment. It takes an insane amount of modification to eliminate it. Check out Okcfarmtruck.com. There's 2 guys, Farmtruck, and AZN. AZN drives an insane beetle (warning: it looks like a piece of junk) affectionately named Dung Beetle... and Holy Crap it's FAST, and it sounds Great!

Air-cooled engines just have that quality. Loose tolerances because they run hot as fuck, and no water jackets to dampen the rest of the engine noise.
