- Time for another WWE video game review/retrospective. We are now on to WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009. SVR 2009 is a game that was released back in October of 2008 featuring stars like John Cena, Undertaker, CM Punk, Jeff Hardy etc. Out on the PS3 and XBOX 360 and basically every other console imaginable in 2008. I was so excited for this game, I thought it was going to be legendary, and to be honest it was far from that. This is considered the worst SVR game. Why is that? It can't be that bad right? Well, let's take a look.

I just remember being super happy that Randy got his 'Voices' theme in the game as well as the punt kick. It also had the 'Hunting RKO', which is probably my favorite animation for the move.

Maria's theme is not their usual sound, if you want to get a feel for them listen to their songs Anthem and Alone. They have 2 lead vocalists, one is a rapper of sorts, and the other is just a normal punk singer

SvR 2009 could’ve at least given us the Legends they didn’t put in Legends of WrestleMania
If they had done that then this game would have a much higher ranking. It would at least be over 2008 and maybe even 2005

I like this game. The road to wrestlemania was awesome, the tag team matches are better, soundtrack is still awesome, etc. I can understand it’s not the best svr but I still enjoy it.
This is DEFENITELY not the worst smackdown vs raw. Its waaaaay better than svr and better than svr 08

@@koba9421 but thats it though. Worse roster. 24/7 is trash. And the styles system ruined the gameplay. It just limited some of the stuff you could do. I think the first svr is the worst svr and I am not saying svr08 is a bad game.

I absolutely loved this game as a kid, as someone growing up on wrestling games while never being too good at them this was my favourite at the time, I still remember taking my psp on car rides and playing the tag team RTW

This game has some massive nostalgia for me. I loved all the characters and always enjoyed the moves. I was only like 8 at the time but I’m trying to find my only ps2 and try it again years later

Damn, I was so hyped to get this game so that I could play GM mode with the updated rosters. I was literally making my own roster in sheets of paper and setting up feuds. I got so disappointed when I got the game and it didn't have GM mode :(

Despite the absence of legends, the roster was strong. I loved the game overall as 2008 is one of my fave years in WWE History. Jeff Hardy and Triple H being on Smackdown was so cool back then
Oh, yeah! This is my childhood right here. SvR 2009, was a good game but the disappointing part of it was that they removed the legends, and made an exclusive game for them called "Legends of Wrestlemania". Otherwise the game was great.
My friends and i had so much fun playing this for hours and making our own stories with exhibition.
Loved the soundtrack too!

this game was my first experience with pro wrestling. I remember getting this back in early 2009 because I thought this was a UFC game (which UFC was my dad's favourite), but WWE was different from UFC. which was still ok because I loved this game and got into WWE right after. Good times

SvR will always be my favorite WWE video game series.
For some reason I really liked this game. The story modes were great and the edition of create a finisher and the new tag team grapples and finishers were fire.
Ah, yes, the create-a-finisher mode, I had a ton of fun with this thing. I remember I created a modified version of the GTS I called Drug Free. It started out like a normal GTS, with me putting my opponent on my shoulders, and then I believe I did a 360 spin, then lifted him up in a Military Press, then brought him down with the knee to the face. Good times.
This was my first svr game and honestly it was kind of good for a start to the series. It might not have had everything that made the previous ones great, but it had all the basics that kind of acted like a tutorial for when I started playing the other svrs

Damn I get this is one of the lesser games in the SvR series... But good god, hearing the soundtrack breaks and warms my heart with nostalgia and longing for simpler times. The amount of hours I put into this game is absolutely insane. Will always love this game.
2009 was my first wwe game but all my cousins and friends had 2008 and I made my parents buy me it. I enjoyed them both so much even if they were the same thing with added features. 2008 & 2009 will forever be my favorite wwe games

Maybe I’m a bit biased because this was my first wwe game, got me to start watching wwe, and singlehandedly built my taste in music, but this is my favorite wwe game.
The HD stages have since their inception always been an incredible turn off for me. Absolutely killed stage design, creative lighting and make the whole show look like a cartoon (which has been pushed even farther which the disgusting led ring posts and aprons).

I never played any 2K game except for 2K14. However, SVR series was my life. SVR07/11 were my daily play. The moment I got SVR09 i was so hyped but that camera angle when you go out of the ring made me sick to my stomach.
You aren’t missing anything. The 2K games on PS3 are ok but the ones on PS4/PS5 suck. And yes! SvR 2011 is amazing and so is 07
Another good video, Pav! I steered clear of this one back in the day for the glaring omission of GM mode. You hit the nail on the head. GM mode was 95% of the reason I played these, and a horrible thing to get rid of.
As much as I love GM Mode, if you never played SvR 2011 you are missing out.

Of course Maria's theme is lit; it was by Zebrahead (who we knew from the OG SVR's inclusion of "Alone" and "Falling Apart").
I remember playing the hell out of this game when I was young I would stay up all night on the weekends trying to beat the entire Road to Wrestlemania mode and unlock everything. I remember always wanting to unlock the blue attire for Rey Mysterio I thought it was so cool.
I loved GM mode and its exactly what killed the games for me when they got rid of it but I absolutely sucked at it, i was always at 0 fans about 4 weeks into every game run I ever played

Was 12 in 7th Grade and My Sister was 13 in 8th Grade when this game came out, the Electropop Era just started and we really looked forward to this game and played it. Tho grew out of Wrestling and didn't get back until late 2010, during the Summer of 2011 we started playing this game again and it really brought back the feelings and passion we had.
So no matter how bad it was compared to others... i appreciate it for help brining me back.

Honestly I started watching WWE in 2008 and loved wrestling which made me catch up with it in December haha. I thought 2009 was an amazing game on the ps2 simply because it was my very first wrestling game
Edit: The only reason I love this game is because my grandpa gave me this game for my birthday. Eventually a day before my next birthday he passed :( I wanted to get this game since now that I'm older and I started watching wrestling again

@@amadeuschavez. There was 1 thing that killed SVR 11: the lack of creative freedom in Universe Mode. You could only do title matches on PPVs, you couldn't make anybody champion, and most importantly, at one point, you were forced to do the atrocious championship scramble match type for the big major titles.
They removed gm mode cause of the roster
I remember playing SvR 09's Co-Op Road to WrestleMania with my best friend and let’s just say that he and I unintentionally predicted "YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO BE MY *FRIEND!"* on several occasions.

While I like the features and modes that 2007 has, this one just feels the most fluid and well rounded to me
This game was an absolute pinnacle of a game in my childhood. It was one of the few things me and all my brothers would play together and make so many memories. May not have a been a good game but it was responsible for some of the best memories of my childhood so it’ll always hold a special place in my heart
My cousin got this game when it was new, he loved the games as much as me. Back then he had raw 2, day of reckoning 2, and SVR 09. I had day of reckoning 1 and 2, and SVR 07’ and 08. We played the hell out of this game but I always liked 07’ and 08’ more especially because of GM mode.
The lack of GM Mode really killed the replay-ability of this one. While I actually I like SvR 2009, when I get done with the Road To Wrestlemanias and tired of exhibition matches there’s just nothing left. I just couldn’t get into career mode. Nevertheless I do like this game and I give it an 8/10. I think it has better gameplay than 2008, it just needed GM Mode to put it over the top.

The lack of Legends ain't even that bad. Retrospectively, I actually like having more lower card guys than Legends in my wrestling games. That's one reason why I love the AKI games. Having your Spike Dudley's, your Mideons, your Paul Burchills and Kenny Dykstras is kinda what makes these games REALLY feel of their time. Which is fuckin dope.
Still legends couldn’t hurt like they could have gave us the legends from 2007 and 2008 like literally we could have at least gotten Eddie,rock,Austin,Bret,mick,sabu and sandman and more and especially idk why they didn’t include Eddie in the game like we haven’t had Eddie in a smackdown vs raw game since 2007 like they couldn’t have bother to add Eddie especially knowing we wanted to play as latino heat

I really enjoyed the Road to WM Mode that was introduced in this game. It even had branching paths for some wrestlers. You mentioned HHH's DX Vs Evolution, I think Jericho's Road could also end in 2 different matches depending on choices... it was amazing xD
