  • Ever since Christopher Nolan's third Batman movie came out, I've been convinced one intrinsic change would have made all the difference, and made it so much better. 1000x better even! This is what I would have altered to The Dark Knight Rises to recontextualize the third act, improve a key conversation and fix the gripe everybody has had with the famed trilogy...

    I think the voice is actually great in Begins - it's when they started doing it differently in TDK and TDKR that it became a joke. In Begins most of the time it's pretty subtle, and in that interrogation scene it has impact. I can buy that voice paired with that face scaring the shit out of someone he'd just yanked off the street.

      Yes, it was great in Begins. When he screams at the cop on the rooftop like a maniac it's scary as hell. And when he later talks to Rachel, he's doing it way less. Or, you could have Talia but NO connection between her and Bane. Or even have it that Ra's and Bane sparred, at least, if not straight up Ra's trained Bane at some point before Bane came to Gotham... but like what a mindf**k it could be if Talia just whispered in Bruce's ear at the end, "Daddy says hi." I mean, Nolan was NEVER gonna introduce the Lazarus Pits in his more grounded universe... but it would've blown fans away. I don’t think revealing Bruce as Batman would have worked for two reasons. One, if Bane had revealed that to Gotham while also revealing Harvey Dent’s crimes and exonerated Batman he would have created a hero out of the city’s most privileged billionaire which would have worked against his class warfare narrative.
    Secondly, it would’ve gone against Bruce’s initial mission statement that he lays out to Alfred on the plane in Begins. Bruce Wayne being a fallible, corruptible man could never have the same symbolic power that Batman had as a masked, anonymous hero. The case study of Harvey Dent and how Bruce and Gordon propped him up to be the incorruptible solution to Gotham’s problems and how badly that backfired is proof that Bruce couldn’t be the one who ultimately took the credit for saving the city. It had to be Batman as this anonymous symbol that could be “more than just a man”.

      I absolutely agree. Because of his goofy ass voice, Bane in the Lego Batman movie and the animated Harley Quinn show is ridiculed primarily because he has the voice from this movie. I hate how that has become one of the first things that casual fans would think of when asked about Bane. I love the character so much, and I'm glad he was handled better in Arkham Origins, and some animation (thinking mainly of Mystery of the Batwoman) but this decision for his voice is such an embarrassing moment that keeps being brought up again and again 😓

  • @JShorty6789

    Bane's reasoning for not revealing the identity was to attempt to prove that 'the batman' as a symbol didn't matter, his desire was to break Bruce by ridding the city of that hope (which bruce obviously wasn't going to allow to happen), its an example of Bane being too overconfident, leading to his downfall later in the film. I understand and agree with your point, but I feel it would've taken alot away from Bane's drive as a character and his eventual fall as a result of him underestimating not just bruce/ Batman but also the city and its people, he also likely knew that revealing Bruce would have only pushed the citizens to rise faster, and look up to a single person, perhaps one of them even attempting to replace the symbol in Bruce's absence after his reveal, break the symbol, not the man. Bane felt he was being smart by not considering revealing Batman’s identity. By not revealing his identity people would have likely assumed batman had given up, and thus they should too, if they knew bruce was batman and possibly dead and missing they’d use him as a martyr, again rising faster

      That line has me so confused too. Barfleck was NOTHING like Batman in the comics (or any other medium for that matter). If he wanted an example of a more comic accurate Batman he should have just used Kevin Conroy (both his DCAU and Arkham appearances are more comics accurate than Batfleck lol).
      Like you said I guess the suit is comic accurate but that’s about it. I don’t even see the need to bring up Batfleck in a discussion of Batman actors, he never even played him in a solo movie.

    Yes, this would have been great, from a story perspective, and for atmosphere. I think the voice worked in Batman Begins, because of the scenes it was used in, the way they were shota nd the dialoge he had. But it became painful in The Dark Knight, which went for a much more realistic, almost mundane visual style, and had him say waaaay to many normal lines of dialoge. You can't really take any scene with Batman serious in both TDK and TDKR. It's a shame.

  • @mauricioaguilar4889
    @mauricioaguilar4889 6 месяцев назад +7

    I have agreed on most of your videos, but I a 100% disagree on this take.
    Because if Bane would have revealed that Bruce Wayne was Batman, the point of the whole trilogy falls down.
    Sure, the voice might have been a little mistake, but the message of the trilogy is the impact that an incorruptible legend can have.
    That's why at the end they build a statue of Batman. That's why at the funeral of Bruce, Gordon says that the people of Gotham know who saved them. And that's why in Batman Begins Bruce chooses a symbol.
    I think this little change fixes a tiny little problem, but ruins completely Nolan's trilogy.
    If Bruce Wayne died and Gotham knew it, then a hero, a person would have died.
    But if Batman died, than a legend, a myth, would have died. And that story has way more impact.

  • @SmashBrosAssemble

    The problem with The Dark Knight Rises is, it’s not good enough. It’s better than most things, it’s a Christopher Nolan film of course it is, but it’s not up to his standards, & he’s only got himself to blame, he set the bar so high with Batman Begins & The Dark Knight.
    You can tell Nolan’s heart wasn’t with this one, & I can understand why, you lost the person that made The Dark Knight the phenomenon that it was, & was clearly going to be a big part of the next film.

      @@BurningBushProductions For ROTJ the whole plot to rescue Han makes no sense, there's no new locations. The movie is a boring retread with awful pacing on Endor. The only good stuff is Luke and Vader, oh and Wedge too I suppose.
      For TDKR, the plot of moving it around the city while locking it down was silly. Every cop being trapped is nonsensical. Plus the fight in the street at the end is so bad. When a movie like The Raid 2 with a fraction of the budget runs circles around the culmination of the Dark Knight trilogy, you know you've got issues. The movie tries to do too much and falters. But yeesh, those fight scenes are so bad. No one makes a connection... but the worst! The absolute worst is the overhead shot of the crowds running and then some fat cop in a yellow vest is the focal point who hits nothing. It's pathetic. I would keep the voice for low-level crooks and thugs just to spook them. But when he's actually talking to villains on his level, he drops the growl a bit so that he can actually talk to them.
    In fact, the growl sounds really good when he's just chatting with people. A good example of this is the beginning of TDK where he has the convo with Gordon in the bank.

  • @DigitalVanquish
    @DigitalVanquish 6 месяцев назад +2

    I dislike the voice in TDK and TDKR, and would've been happy with how it was in Batman Begins. It was only then it felt it went too far.
    I always took Gordon's implication at the very end to mean that people could know in the back of their minds Batman was Bruce Wayne, but that it didn't matter, so no one thought about it. Bane stole tech and vehicles from Wayne Enterprise, and it looked identical to the vehicle Batman used to drive. Bruce made the adjustment to the auto-pilot of The Bat, and that was a vehicle Batman was very openly using. Mr Reese figured it out in TDK. I think having breadcrumbs to Batman's identity works just fine for these films, and disagree that Bruce should've been outed by Bane, in _this_ story. It was breadcrumbs that led Tim Drake to figure out Batman and Robin's identities, and I think Wayne Manor being an orphanage leaves open opportunity for John (Robin) to have a partner - hopefully one older than 13.
    Batman is only able to rally the city in the end because he is The Batman. He became his ultimate personification of his initial reason for choosing to become a symbol, and did so as he fought in the day in front of the whole city, rather than at night alone. The Batman died to save Gotham, and inadvertently saved Bruce - allowing him to leave, and live a normal life. John (Robin) then has the opportunity to assume the mantle, and The Batman doesn't lose his power. If anything, seemingly coming back from the dead will only make him more fearsome. A new Dark Knight rises from the ashes of the old. Everyone that knew Bruce knew he was alive, and was Batman, and that's all that mattered. If random members of the public knew, it wouldn't matter after a brief while anyway, because he wasn't their friend and life goes on. It would become old news, and even though they would have a hero, the symbol is lost. It isn't what Bruce wanted anyway.
    You could argue that it was out of character for this Bane to not reveal Batman's identity, but he wanted people to hate the rich of Gotham. Telling them that one of the richest had been tackling crime with his bare hands, and had saved the city at least twice, _might_ not put people against Bruce Wayne. Bane also believed he had Bruce completely covered and accounted for, so, there was no need.

I really didn't pay it too much attention after the 1st movie, then we were distracted by the Joker in the 2nd movie, but the 3rd one had two people with crazy voices--this screamed out for parody. I think when Bale's Batman keeps the dialogue to a few words in a short sentence, it's ok. But when he goes on a Bat-soliloquy, it's really hard to take him seriously. Like it or not, the Bat voice is embedded in the Nolan trilogy and like the Burton films, Schumacher films, it has its strengths and weaknesses.

    I think my only issue with the voice is, that in the dark knight rises, a lot of people batman talks to know already that he is Bruce Wayne. Robin, Catwoman, Talia, Bane - they all know its Bruce Wayne under the Mask. So it feels a bit strange to me that he keeps up the voice even in moments hes only with people that know its Bruce under that Mask. Theres no in-universe reason to keep up the illusion for him, especially because its noteably more difficult for him to speak that deep. I assume the reason they stuck to the voice is that it keeps being consistent to the viewer between bruce wayne without mask and batman.

    Great video. What would have made sense would be for Bane to reveal video or pictures of Bruce beaten in the bat costume to the public. To really drive home how Bane is a serious and capable threat. It would be basically similar to what Joker did to imposter Batman in TDK but this time it is actually Bruce who is finally in that position. It would be heartbreaking for the viewers seeing Bruce like that and also the people of Gotham.

    I can't believe anyone is still struggling with the voice after more than a decade. And while I still like Dark Knight Rises, what it was lacking for me was more impactful character arcs. Bruce gets injured and imprisoned, then he gets better and escapes. Selina betrays Batman, then she helps him. Gordon is exposed for the coverup, then it's just fine. The Dark Knight was so great because the story was so personal and permanent to all involved, while in Rises, you can replace the nuclear resolution death faking ending with a sort of, "That was an eventful week, what's next for Batman?" kind of deal.

    For some reason I have no issues with it in Begins or TDK, but in rises it feels a bit more forced. To me. I also happen to have a troubled relationship with TDKR. Saw it in IMAX70mm when it came out and I had one of the best seats in the house. Back then you couldn't pick your own seat in advance so I had to "camp out". I showed up 2hrs in advance. Not crazy and sat on the floor in a LONG LINE with other Nolan 70mm geeks like me. Anyway. I walked out of the theatre that day confused. And I've BEEN confused about the movie to this day.

    What would’ve made DKR 1000x better was Heath Ledger not dying. The only voice that needed changing was Bane’s. In fact, everything bad about that movie involved Bane, not the least of which was the wholly anticlimactic and lame way he died. Batman’s voice seems like such an immaterial and nitpicky thing to worry about to me. He had to mask his voice. Could they have come up with something better? Probably, but it still doesn’t have any effect on how good the movie is.

    I truly believe that if this film was a 2 parter, it would be perfect. If you ended with Bruce being left in the pit for part 1 and have part be be entirely a no man's land movie, not only would make this different than the Dark Knight (which it really is trying to do) and would be able to flesh out everything so much more. And you wouldn't have the problem of him spending 40 minutes becoming batman, then an hour later, doing the same thing.

    • @spencermalley10

    The Begins voice was fine. In Knight and Rises, Bale took it too far. And far from Keaton being the example to be exemplified, it is of course, the GOAT himself, Kevin Conroy, who leads the way in how Batman should sound. Although, Ben Afflecks voice modulation was a damn fine comprimise.

  • @jlevans1985
    @jlevans1985 5 месяцев назад

    the voice of both bane and batman were terrible in rises, then there's the fact that they took away the venom that actually gives bane the edge over batman in comics and the animated series. I also wish they'd given the joker a more polished look and ditched the league of shadows training bruce wayne. batman begins also has the best cape but BvS had the best costume (with a modified Keaton bat symbol). Honestly to tell this story properly they it would have been best done in a tv show format and built up to the knightfall storyline, this would have gave them time to build up that rogues gallery batman is known for along with the multiple Robins he's had. what frustrates me most about these WB moviies is that DC owns all their characters, they didn't go bankrupt in the 90s and have to sell off all their characters only to have to buy them back 20 yrs later under disney like marvel did, but yet marvel can give a 10yrs of continuous stories from the Netflix's daredevil to guardians of the galaxy or the avengers. DC, botched these movies, botched BvS/Man of Steel, botched the Aquaman, Justice League and Green Arrow(by trying to turn him into batman)
