- Learn how to reset the Idle after changing the battery. It took about 30 minutes of driving and a few stalls and idling while parked to get it idling at 500 rpm. sad these automakers switch to parts that cause us headache. the throttle cable and iac worked perfect for decades but no they have to make it worse with a mechanical throttle. 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 02. 03, 04, 05, 06

Make sure to read the video description above for more information about this process.
I just tried what two dealerships told me, a different method auto zone said and 3 other RUclips methods….then came across your video. Bro I could tear up! I got a 2002 Toyota Camry automatic and this was the only method that made any difference. Thank you so much it wouldn’t idle at all before dying now it will at least idle. GOD bless you brother!
2003 Camry, takes on/off 3x, do it fast, on the 3rd turn, turn the car on and pull the break, put car in Drive. This worked. Key is to do it faster then shown.
GREAT video. Thank you for keeping it short and simple. And super agreement with you about these companies. They tripping!
Thankyou for your video! After doing work that involved disconnecting the battery, my car wasn't idling correctly and kept stalling out. This video was exactly what was wrong with my car.. followed the steps you said and it fixed it!
Chriss4365: I just went through a procedure, on RUclips, by a man outside America. Probably, EU, due to right side steering wheel. I went through his "procedure" which was about 16 steps, overall. Spent about 45-50 minutes getting through it, after disconnecting battery for 30 minutes of that, to reset the idle on 2003 Camry 2.4L. It did NOT work. I just used YOUR method of resetting the idle. It took about 5 minutes to go through your procedure. After about 2 to 2-1/2 minutes, the idle creeped back up where it should be. Smooth idle. Almost purring. Like it should. Thank you. I'm glad I went ahead and watched your video. Good job!
I remember this when I owned my 03 4cyl Camry. I had it 6 years with 2 batteries, and it also had to do this "relearn" technique. I fixed it by driving a long distance without stopping and it worked.
This totally worked for my 2005 Camry. Thank you thank you thank you!!!
It works! Thank you for sharing this video with us
Had to take out battery to change my starter once I finished my idle was so bad at zero and would die thanks for the video it worked out saved me 200$$ FYI had to run 10 minutes in drive with e break on thanks for video
This video is a GOLDMINE of useful information! Thanks so much for posting this. This just happened to me today! I had to unhook and change the battery in my 2002 Camry V6 for the first time since owning it. I nearly got in 3 accidents in busy intersections from "0" idle stalling out on the first drive after the new battery installed - not knowing anything about this ridiculous issue of Toyota's "computer idle reset". It took 2 iterations of the video instructions before it "learned" the 500 RPM idle again. I turned on the A.C. half way through the second time, that seemed to help it get back up to normal. THANK YOU!! 😀👍
Wait, your idle rpm goes up when you turn on your AC?
@@tonystark701 It did go up "that" time, when running the idle reset procedure. The RPMs going 'up' a little was the target goal here for this dangerous low idling issue. The RPMs no longer fluctuate low, and don't change when turning on the a.c. - everything back to normal - after following this video's instructions. Purring smooth!
@@UglyOckren That's quite interesting. My idle rpm drops when I turn on the AC and drops even further when I put the car into drive. Someone said that isn't supposed to happen with the AC. Not sure if there's something wrong.
Wow!! That is Awesome! Thank you for sharing 🙏🏾
Just wanted you to know out of all the videos this is the only one fixed my idle problem thank you much
On my 2005 Camry, I had to do “on, then off, THEN ON THEN OFF AGAIN, then start” to get it into learning mode
Thank you all for this. I have same year car and this totally worked.
Awesome pal thank you so much God bless you
Work! Thanks my dude
You're my hero.
Thanks it did work!!
Mine wouldn't idle at all. I had to sit in it and hold the accelerator down slightly for about 20 minutes before it finally learned how to idle. But it worked!
damn.. its like a damn cheat code entry😂 Jokes aside this was actually really helpful thank you for the insight brother
😂😂 up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right l, B, A start 😂
Ty you the man bro
Very helpful
Thanks it works
Thank you this worked on my car. Jesus loves you, may God bless you in Jesus mighty and powerful name amen ✝️🙏🏽 again thank you for this video!
Thanks
Thanks
Is your temperature gauge reading always at this level?
Yes
When do you do this?
My Camry doesn’t seem to be going above the 2k rpm. I’ve checked the fuses, replaced the MAF
Your issue may be a bad throttle body. Remove the air intake and have some one put the car in acc and press the gas pedal see if the throttle opens all the way if not it's bad. Check my Playlist I have another video cleaning the throttle body in this car and you can see me test the throttle for proper function.
I just changed my battery awhile back on 2002 Camry, and it used to idle just fine after putting new battery in it idles at zero,so does this actually work this way ,I hope so wat causes that you should be able to change a battery on this kind of car and not mess with idle
Its a stupid design the computer controls the idle via the throttle plate. Older cars have a ide air control valve that stays open to let extra air into the engine at cold start up so it doesn't stall. They always work even if you disconnect the battery if it has a mechanical throttle body have fun resetting the ecu. My old truck has a IAC valve and starts and idles perfect even when i reset the ecu I will avoid cars with the mechanical throttle as long as I can.
WHAT IF MY CAR RAN GREAT but after putting new battery in it an now won't idle is that the problem ,one more thing do you gotta do it cold or thermostat up half
When you remove the battery it resets the ecm. You have to let it relearn the idle. This car in the video is stubborn you have to drive it for 30 minutes using one foot on gas and one on brake so it doesn't stall.
After disconnecting battery, change spark plugs on the 2000 V6 Camry my idle jump to 2000 rpm. After adjusted down the throttle to 800, the automatic transmission makes a clunking sound going from park to reverse and from first to second while parked. Not sure it could be reset like this on the 2000 Camry, could be high RPM, linkage, may need to change the tranny oil.
These cars have a electronic throttle body there is no way to adjust it. the computer is responsible for learning idle and maintaining idle. The clunking sound could be the torque converter having a slight slip but cant say for sure. you will have to diagnose it. If it shifts ok when driving i wouldn't worry about it. I would drain the trans fluid and look at it. If you do save the old fluid incase you have issues so you can put it back in. If you have no idea if it was ever changed you can save what comes out and add back the equivalent new fluid and see if it helps, if it gest worse drain the fluid again and add back in the old stuff and at that point the transmission is in rough shape and wont last much longer, so save up to have it replaced.
This process doesn't work as shown many on youtube. it can't idle so how do you let it sit in the Drive mode w/o press the gas pedal . The engine just die immediately
This is probably your issue. ruclips.net/video/y0xdsRFF24w/видео.html
What if you don't have a emergency brake like that one but the one that you pull up in the middle on a 2003 camry le? My car won't stay running after a muffler change, don't know if that has anything to do with it? Please help
@@denisehoover5041 any e brake works. Did you replace the muffler with stock?
@@chriss4365 the Walker SoundFX Muffler, Direct Replacement, No Fabrication Needed muffler is the part that I used. Also someone put a smaller muffler on my car before this so it was very loud. Also had to substitute the flange to connect it. Does the car need to relearn how to run again?
@denisehoover5041 since you put a new muffler, I would reset the ecu.
@@chriss4365 thank you, I will try that
@@denisehoover5041 if you have more questions just ask.
Is this the same for an engine swap
If the battery was disconnected yes.
@@chriss4365 If I had the American version from the dealership and then just swapped the engine to the Jdm version would the throttle body be the same or different.Or do I just need an idle rest because its a new engine.
@@howardstark1702 as long as all the wiring harness connect properly then it should be compatible.
Good one.. But mine is manual transmission.... Will that work on that as well..?
Process will be different as you cant use brake and put it in gear. You'll need to drive it. Never knew this car has a manual version.
@@chriss4365 well I drove for sometime.. Din help..
@@7080100 you have another issue then. The electronic throttle body's do wear out.
@@chriss4365 it was all working fine.. Had to disconnected battery to fix power steering issue... Need to check if it's got any sensor..
@@7080100 ok yeah it's issue with the computer relearning idle. No idea why they got rid of the iac valve for this stupid mechanical throttle its garbage. So glad my truck has an iac valve.
Does this work for manuals?
It should. You'll still need to drive it so the ecm can relearn.
So, what if the car stalls out when waiting for it to relearn the idle? I have this problem, followed this procedure, however the the car stalls out after restarting it. It it doesn't relearn it because it just stalls out.
You have to slightly press the gas pedal.
Did you get the car running?
Right
clean the throttle body and it'll be perfect right away
I have a 03 and I sit and tried this over 8 times and nothing!
This is the next thing to try ruclips.net/video/y0xdsRFF24w/видео.html
Same as for 05 sienna?
Not sure.
How about a 2002 solara? Mine actually has a very fast idle on startup.
@@bobprobert1551 If the car has Iac valve it might be defective or dirty inside. If it doesnt have one you can watch this video. You can tell by looking at the trottle body if there is no steel cable going to the throttle plate you do not have an Iac and cleaning inside the throttle body may solve the issue.
ruclips.net/video/y0xdsRFF24w/видео.html
I think you forgot to say before you do the steps you need to get the temperature up to half way
Getting the temperature up may help but the ecu still needs to learn how to idle with a cold engine as well. These are a stupid design and do not have a idle air control valve its all computer controlled. The old IAC system would idle perfect instantly even after resetting the ecu but not anymore this new system is worse than the old system.
Why isn't it working on my 03??
This is probably your issue. ruclips.net/video/y0xdsRFF24w/видео.html
What if you do all that but it won’t reset
Might be a dirty or worn out throttle. Check the wire connections to the throttle body. It's the lame mechanical version no throttle cable.
I tried this on my 2010 Toyota Corolla. It didn't work.
Try to do this to fix it. ruclips.net/video/y0xdsRFF24w/видео.html
“Mechanical throttle”? Don’t you mean electronic throttle?
They use an electrical motor. Motors are mechanical because they have moving parts.
@@chriss4365Oh, that totally makes sense.
@@chriss4365One question: I’ve heard from a few people that the RPM is supposed to rise when the AC is turned on, but this hasn’t been my experience. Quite the opposite, in fact. Is this true? And how would you explain it? If it is, what could be wrong with my car?
@tonystark701 the ecu is not properly controlling the idle. Yes the rpms go up when ac is on. Engine needs more torque to turn the compressor.
@@chriss4365 Thank for your response. Does this mean my ECU is faulty?
did not work
This is the next thing to try ruclips.net/video/y0xdsRFF24w/видео.html
A parking brake! A parking brake! Not an emergency brake! The other is a service brake!
The car had no typical emergency brake so that is the e brake. My trucks e brake is also pressed by foot there is no lever to pull. They are both the same thing parking and e brake in one.
