  • Thinking of upgrading your Nissan Navara D40 to an NP300? Should you do it? And how does the Nissan Navara NP300 perform as a towcar?
    A few people asked me if I would make this video after I ended up towing my caravans 1500 miles with a loaned 2017 Nissan Navara NP300, and wanted to know how it compared to my D40.
    For a great in-depth review of the current Nissan Navara NP300, please see the video by Karina and Jules at the channel Here We Tow: • Nissan Navara Review (...

    I drove the Navara (Frontier in the US) for 15 years. Many long-long trips to LA, climbing up the Rockies in Colorado, sweating it out in Tucson. Never ever a single problem. Changed the oil on schedule, maintained the auto transmission, used only Geolander tires. Best ever car buy I ever made, next car will be a Nissan again. I am sold for life, huge fan.

    I read this review a couple of years ago when I had a D40 (first pick up) and agree with everything you wrote. I am someone that doesnt NEED a pick up but enjoys the idea of owning one. Recently returned to truck ownership this time with the NP300 and with its 7 speed auto box and DAB radio (wow!) have to say it was absolutely the right choice as a daily driver but...all that refinement is at the expense of the sense of adventure I got from driving my boxy D40 with its military looking interior. Its early days though and as I start to build some history with this truck, I am sure I will grow to love it.

    We have been seriously looking at the NP300 2019. What became the deal breaker for us was the lack of practicality.
    Rear seats an issue but for us the lack of 12 v socket in the pick up section was key.

    Hi Andrew, Was surprised to see the comment section for your last video closed! Anyway I was pleasantly surprised to see the update on your friend from California who had one year ago moved to Portugal. Good to hear she has established herself in the community, purchasing a residence, & seemingly has entered into a relationship, which is wonderful. One can only admire the bravery to up root & move not just across the country but across an ocean to a place that is substantial different!
    Also the truck video review, & as you know Andrew I'm a huge fan, however reviewing trucks is not your best work!

    Hi Andrew - it’s a shame that Nissan has a problem with the chassis on the D-40, I was at our local salvage company yesterday inspecting vehicles there and they have a lot of these that have been classed as unrepairable with the chassis actually splitting, they use them to drive around the yard but some of them have just bent in half, they were ones that Nissan had brought back from customers that they sold onto salvage.
    I would get it in writing that they are happy that your vehicles chassis is going to be ok, especially when you tow a lot.

    Used to drive these for work, we had use of about 4 and they all kept going through front tyres (more so than the rear tyres) about once every three weeks. Tyres wore unevenly on inside edge. Pressures checked weekly and tyres aligned about once every 4-6 weeks. The truck were doing about 800 miles a week but just thought I would mention to other owners to check tyres inside edge.

    No other ute has split rear seats, as far as I know. My SE (South African spec) does not have tie rails in the back bin or roof rails, but I do not need any. Only letdown is lack of forward folding rear seat. I also love the engine and economy. The 2.3 is a gem, BUT UNFORTUNATELY i read last night that the new facelift SA built Navara NP300 has a 2.5 engine (YD25) and 2.3 has sadly been removed!! Nissans are always heavy on fuel, except this 2.3 Twin Turbo which is very frugal.

    Great review Andrew. I found it very interesting as I tow caravan also and would like the option of all season touring hence the reason I am looking at NP300. I’ve been looking at Navara as I feel they would be best value for money pickup. What are the running cost disadvantages of running a pickup as a private personal vehicle, I am not self employed. when looking at them it keeps mentioning +VAT

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  2 года назад +1

      Hi Tom, I'm not VAT registered so I ran mine as a private vehicle. I think the only reason they quote it +VAT is because of the tax advantages for companies (as opposed to regular cars). I'd say the biggest disadvantage was the car insurance - it cost double what I now pay on the EV6.

    • @okcantbelieveit294
      @okcantbelieveit294 4 года назад

      Gnarly Boot . Obviously the consumer protection laws in the UK are sh-te. AND it shows the crappy van designs/ toughness over there. If we applied that here in Oz or NZ there would be bugger all caravan sales as the majority are towed by utes.

    • @gnarlyboot477
      @gnarlyboot477 4 года назад

      Ok Can'tbelieveit - Well, I’m a retired quality engineer with 30 years at a Nissan vehicle manufacturing plant. So I know a bit about putting vehicles together, and parts supply and manufacture. Being fairly new to Caravanning I was horrified as to how lightly built UK caravans are. However from a warranty perspective the industry has the owner over a barrel. The most common significant issue seems to be water ingress. most manufacturers now offer a 10 year warranty, so most people are very cautious about invalidating this warranty. It also means any small modification or repair which could influence water ingress must be completed by a “trained” person. My 30 years in the motor industry doesn’t count........so this pushes you back to the dealer at £50 + an hour. A friend of ours had his water ingress claim rejected because his annual service was 3 weeks late, the cause was a leak through the toilet cassette door, more of a manufacturing issue than a service item. Cost him £3,000 to have a portion of the floor replaced and the leak fixed............😱😱😱😱

    • @okcantbelieveit294
      @okcantbelieveit294 4 года назад

      Gnarly Boot . Man that’s tough. We have, as part of the consumer guarantees act, a “ fit for purpose “ clause. It doesn’t matter whether a vehicle or thing didn’t get serviced on time. Within reason of course It’s what a reasonable person should expect from a product as far as quality goes and a reasonable life expectancy without faults. For example my daughter bought a second hand Mazda CX-5 diesel with just over 100,000 ks on the clock. The engine played up as they’re known to do. The dealer she bought it from did the usual “you haven’t had it serviced on time” . She called consumer protection ombudsman office and spoke to them. They informed her that the manufacturers warranty was all very well but the “fit for purpose” overruled any such warranties and they would contact the dealer. If it couldn’t be repaired satisfactorily then she could get her money back or have them supply her with another vehicle.About an hour later the dealer called and said they would collect it. They gave her another vehicle to use in the meantime. The long and short of it was they couldn’t find out what was causing the problem (should have looked on the internet at the crappy particulate filters Mazda had fitted to their diesels) Anyway she chose to take another vehicle and is very happy with her Toyota Prius 😁

    Be careful with the NP300, the vehicle designers must’ve given the work experience kid the keys to the office and left him to his devices, while they went to the pub for a liquid lunch. The reason I say this is, the place 1 of the bottom radiator hoses, apparently it’s a 3 piece set up, too close to the lower drive belt pulley and there’s more than a lot of them that have had the hose rub on the pulley to the point of wearing thru the hose, causing coolant to leak. Some have actually leaked so rapidly that owners haven’t noticed it and they’ve ended cooking the motor. That has been an ongoing fault since the NP300 was released and its still occurring, nearly 4yrs later. Doesn’t say much for Nissan’s ability to rectify a serious fault, even after 4 years.

Simple, the emissions, but even it would be petrol, we have so much damned emissions equipment on them, Then the economy goes to hell, so that’s why we now have as much as 8 speed /10 speed automatics , just to get more mileage. Cheers From NJ,USA 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧🇺🇸

    Я гоняю на севере на наваре D40 в - 60 градусов, из за мороза шины становятся квадратными, топлива расходует 3 раза больше, мотор работает на износ, мы терпим, но как ещё передвигаться)?

    SatNav on cars and trucks is always going to have update problems so long as you have to take them into the dealers. My brand new car the old location for my post office that had moved 6 months earlier. And a branch of a store that has closed 8 months previous. And since I haven't paid the several hundred dollars to update it, now that the car is 5 years old, it is that much more out of date. I use a Garmin that sits on my dash that I can update just by linking it to the Wi-Fi at home. And the updates are free.
    And if it is having problems, there is always Google Maps on the phone. 😉

      Exactly my friend, but this is why I think the likes of Android Auto and Apple Car Play are the way forward.

    What about compared to the 3.0 V6 DCI D40 so much better 🎉 Has all the extras missing off the D23 plus extra power 170kw 550nm and a bose sound system 😅 plus if you decat and remove one of the silencers it sounds like a mustang 😉

    If the base vehicle is sound,practical can be added.If the base vehicle sucks,no matter what you trow at it to make in moer practical,it still sucks.
    I find the styling from your old D40 better then the NP300,but it's still a nice car to look at.
    30K for the up specc.model expensive??? Try 60K plus for the same vehicle here........

      @andrewjditton  4 года назад +1

      No, I think £30k is reasonable for what you get! Sorry if that didn't come over well :-/

      @@andrewjditton OH,NO, that wasn't the case,i meant that i wish we could buy that vehicle for 30K where i live and don't have a 2K+ roadtax on these heavy diesel vehicles.
      30K is a lot of money,but it's well prized for what you get.The Amarok is waayy more for basicly the same,but with a more luxury feel and touch to it.
      Sorry for my bad grammar.....
      Great video once again.(:

      ncplantdoctor HELLO, only 2019, I had NEVER heard of SAT NAV, so recently I contacted the TOM TOM. dealer, and you should hav seen their response, first they ARE NOT SOLD IN USA, so I would have to contact the company DIRECT, but their answer to me was in probably 6 languages, . BUT I wonder if it may even supported here .This is my preferred brand of GPS, guess I am on the 5th generation , , NEVER EVER PUT ME WHERE I DID NOT WANT TO GO.
