He is correct in his points. The jet is not as important as the guy in it. In my airline career, I was an instructor for a time. We had a contract to teach Chinese to operate an aircraft they were buying. I spent a lot of time with these guys. Some were good, most were not even close to being good. I will assume the military pilots are basically the same, some will be quite good, others just targets.

If the evaluation of the US is based on what happens after we’ve merged then we’ve already lost. It’s not that BFM isn’t unimportant but our strategy is completely based upon what happens before the merge, otherwise, Fat Amy would have never made it off the drawing board.

I mean he pretty much highlighted what has been known at least about Russian doctrine generally - everything is top down and US forced place much more emphasis on individual initiative.

Vietnamese inflicted heavy blows to Usa aviation in their war. And they were only small pupils of russians, without newest top class equipment. A nation without their own technology. We didn't forget!!

Early in the war yes later on not at all. It was simply a matter of training and tactics. Also there were Russian Pilots in Vietnam.

Training was terrible in those days. All air to air training was weak, and against similar aircraft. This took a long time to change. In 1975-76 era, in my Air Guard squadron,

I hit wrong button, our F100 squadron was required to still fly fighting wingman tactics. Thank God, we got the aggressor squadrons around that time frame.
Also tactics was a big factor. Huge. Same time, same way, every day. All because commanders for the most part would not allow departing from the norms. Robin Olds was not one of those guys! My hero!
Years later, flying the F4 and F15, it had all changed for the better. I was in an outstanding unit in the Louisiana Air Guard, and we took on all comers. If you can beat up regular AF units flying Eagles in F4s, you are doing things right. It was all due to rigorous training, skilled aviators, and demanding high standards. You have to ruthlessly get rid of pilots who cannot meet demanding standards.

So ya'll deny that in actual war games, with China and Russia, that we got our arses handed to us year after year? B4 anyone responds , LOOK IT UP
It was all in the la10-14 years.

That's more about the difficulties in operating in the adversaries' backyard than the competency of the forces.

We never do wargames against Russian or Chinese pilots. We do wargames against Americans simulating Russian tactics. To be in the aggressor squadrons you have to be some of the best pilots in the world. The average Russian or Chinese pilot doesn't get enough flight time to be proficient much less effective in combat. LOOK IT UP.
