IMO, STP was unfairly associated with other "grunge" acts. Stone Temple Pilots was *never* a grunge band. They're just a kick@ss rock band, and a unique one at that. No one used the chords that Dean did. No one could play as slow as Eric, and still drive the song. No one grooved on the bass like Rob. And no one sounded & moved like Scott.
I don’t even think the “grunge” bands were grunge. It was just a label that the industry slapped on the “new thing” that wasn’t even a new thing! Just good hard rock and roll with a healthy dose of metal.
I don't think STP was a grunge act, they stayed consistently in the sphere of "contemporary rock". That being said, Purple is definitely a grunge record.
