    Hey, Steve here. In this video I'll show you some of my own CHON style guitar riffs and licks. I researched into the ways that CHON potentially write licks together to make them. I explain In the video I explain what tools I used to write them and how you can use them to play in a similar style. Can you guess which songs inspired each lick?

    Great stuff!
    I'd say: 1. Story, 2. Sleepy Tea, 3. not sure, 4. Splash!
    Please go into more detail on the riffs that require hybrid picking in particular, since there are already lots of videos on youtube on chords and progressions! Keep it up, man :)

      The first one was Story-esque, the second one was Continue-esque, and the third and fourth were nothing on particular.

      Anus Repair Man GG on picking out Sleepy Tea! I got the first and last one, and the second one sounded so similar but I just couldn’t put my finger on it! And yeah I agree, the third one felt like an amalgamation of a couple of songs.

    As a chon fangirl since 2009 (im not a girl lol), I've came to the conclusion that the most important thing to develop a sound like theirs is improve your rhythm/groove/funk. In their riffs, all the rhythmically strong notes are chord tones. They play guitar like it's a percussion instrument. All these little licks are fills. Mario was a drummer first. They didn't develop their sound via theory or thinking. They searched for the right notes while jamming out in the rhythm together, and their ears expanded together with their fretboard. CHON sounds so good because it came from a feeling, you can get all technical, but I think most of us can play well enough already. So I advise you to develop your groove/timing/funk. Start with 2 notes and expand. My 2 cents...

    Hi Steve, I've been watching your vids for a while and have wondered what type of guitar is that? It sounds really nice. Cheers.

    • @LetsTalkAboutMathRock
      @LetsTalkAboutMathRock  7 лет назад

      Hi Kurt, glad that you've been watching. The guitar is a PRS SE Singlecut Korina : www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/prs-se-singlecut-korina-electric-guitar
      Unfortunately it isn't made anymore. It sounds nice and bright and is light, I swapped out the pups for some more jazzy voiced ones.
      I could get a better tone but I can't have my amp cranked at night so I just plug directly into my audio interface and use some guitar modelling software, it doesn't sound as good as an actual amp, but it does a decent job.
