The guy was super fast but the difference was he not only could pick faster than anyone but he played 5notes per beat and 4ths combined and other unorthodox timing at lighting speed . The demo while Alex is decent is quite a bit slower than Shawn actually was but also doesn't do melodic justice . Shawn didn't just play a fast run and then a bend on the octave .

Brilliant!!! I never see/hear anyone ever give props to Shawn Lane w/ the exception of Roy Marchbank. You have some of the most tasty riffs and phrasing around, thanks so much, I'm definitely a big fan!
Yes for sure. Shawn was a genius. Not only for the speed of course. Another vision and another sesibility approcing to a music. He was great also with piano. Insane guy. We miss shawn. Love forever.
I'm glad I've found this video...Alex, you're absolutely showing huge respect to Shawn. Not everyone is capable of that, so hats off to you. Guthrie Govan once said about Shawn: "If you must play fast, play good stuff fast". This sums perfectly what Shawn was, an incredible burst of beautiful notes and melodies.
I never knew Shawn lane until after I started listening buckethead early 2000s . I lived in Nashville in 86 then LA in late 80s early 90s totally into the guitar scene. I listened Jason becker Friedman Richie kotson micheal lee firkens vinnie Moore yngyang malmsteen.. Probably uli jon Roth more than any of them..Untill I discovered buckethead…First time I heard Shawn lanes name in guitar magazine Buckethead and yngyang on front cover. The Interview mentioned Shawn lane tapes floating around in late 80s. I had to find out
I'm so glad you made a video about Shawn Lane. He's my main influence/inspiration for years ever since I was a teenager. I'm also a fan of you as well. Your video made my day
Love Shawn. Every time I see his vids I have to pickup jaw from floor. He had avalanche’s of notes saturating brain with complete joy. He showed me where the mountain top is and how long the journey really is. Thanks for keeping his legacy alive Alex.
Nice Alex, I'm glad you made the point about Shawn being more than a shredder a lot of people don't see past that with his music. "The way it has to be" is probably my favourite track of his... nothing flashy just beautiful playing....as others have said he seemed like a really humble guy and had a brain the size of a planet seemingly
I worked with Shawn for 17 years, from 18-35 yo. Roadie, tech, big brother, body guard. It was a pretty interesting experience sitting while he figured out how to break it all down and explain it to people. Listening to All kinds of music was the real key. Not just guitar. Listen then put it on the guitar, or piano, as he often did
Hey Charles, that's very cool you were able to see him in action thats awesome... And yes he seemed to listen to all sorts of music and be able to play them on both guitar and piano.... All the very best and thanks for watching.👍
Fantastic job getting down those licks, truly a rarity in the world of players on the internet and a breath of fresh air. Of the countless guitarists I've seen and heard, Shawn Lane is certainly hands down the most insane guitarist I've ever known. In my estimation, the guitar world has produced only one other authentic genius of absolute insanity and that's Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal.
Great vid Alex. You're amazing too. To all people not knowing Shawn Lane, listen to his solo albums, Powers of Ten & Tri-Tone Fascination. Not much shred but amazing music and compositions. Timeless melodies. Then you will know the true musician he was. Two piano concertos on Powers of Ten. My favorite musician ever.
Wicked man your the shizz!!! Awesome.... The first 2 tunes your playing ive never heard this type from Shawn soooo cool...You make me want to learn thank you agin and again
nice playing, Alex! Shawn was a mosnter. speaking of hey tbone... his solo begins with what seems to be a mistake. He hits a minor 3rd and holds it, followed by a major 3rd! followed by a minor 3rd. This is such a contrast right after Garsed's blistering scale patterns and arpeggios that are 99% IN (Dorian, mixolydian) and Shawn just comes in SLOW with two clearly clashing notes and you go wtf???? did he just screw up? then you have to say well... no, that's too obvious. No one hits a m3rd HOLDS IT and plays a maj3rd against it w/o knowing one half step up is going to be that sound. So.... it's kind of genius, actually, to start his part off so out and slow and then he just plays faster than anyone. Name someone. McLaughlin.... DiMeola..... who? His left hand was faster than most people's two hand tapping. Paul Gilbert admits this. He's picking and also some hammers and it's off the hook. Bit dissonant with the augmented stuff but Garsed sounds highly polished and melodic and Shawn sounded more raw and spur of the moment and blistering fast. He hits a few spots where he seems to stutter but hey, improvising at his speeds aint easy. Is there any Shawn clone yet for sheer technique? probably by now. Eddie VH clones cropped up everywhere. Not many Shawn clones I know of. Anyone sounding like Shawn yet? I know Holdsworth is covered nicely by some people on YT. But learning one of those solos note for note.... not for me! ahah nice vid!
I remember stumbling into a bar around midnight one drunken night in the 80s in Memphis. Shawn Lane was playing with his band. I was blown away he was as good as everybody says he was probably better...
Hey Jay, sounds like the perfect night...😉 Enjoying some beers and watching a legend at the same time... Awesome, thanks for watching mate, all the best. 👍🎸🤘🍺

Great video Alex! Shawn Lane was most definitely a virtuoso on the piano as well. Some of Shawn's closest friends says that he also had the ability to solve math problems with one hand and could write a sentence with the other at the same time. Shawn also possessed a photographic memory and could remember about everything he red in books.
Ah Cheers Chris, I'm glad you enjoyed it... Yeah man, Schenker was one of the original Badasses. Saw him live once too... Really cool. Have a great weekend mate.
Alex, I am so excited to see you back sharing your easy going and gentle mannerism along with your command of the guitar. You are the inspiration to me that Shawn Lane was to you. I watch your videos over and over because of your amazing playing.By the way, your finger trauma hasn't at all hindered your technique, sir you are a beast !!!
THanks Joey, I'm so pleased you're enjoying the videos.... Yeah I'm so lucky the injuries weren't worse... I still have numbness but luckily can still play through it..... All the best mate and thanks for your support. Means a lot. 👍🎸🙏

We'll never see his like again :(
@@mikeanaro Off the top of my head he didn't use one before the Peavey Profex which was customised at Peavey to try and emulate the tone from his Westbury pedal, Mississippi Bluesman amps. I think there's tube compression from the W20 pedal, but for the most part, it's that combination of pedals and amps, along with the Gjika amps later one. I've even seen shots of Shawn with a Boss HM-2 from the later period of his life, apparently, he tried a lot of routes to find his tone but the guys who know more are remarkably tight-lipped about it all.
I love Shawn. But he played fast and showed off a lot. Lots of repeating. He was cool and much better at a slower pace. Especially when you put a leash on him.
oh man! I remember walking by you years ago when you were demoing some boss gear at namm and wondering "who the heck is this guy?!". it's pretty rare that a guitar player hits me with a WTF. It took this Shawn Lane video for me to find your channel through the algorithms. Subscribed!
Hey Jesse, that's really cool. What year was that? If you see me again in the future come up and say hi. I'm glad you're enjoying the channel, all the very best to you. 👍🎸🙏
@@AlexHutchingsMusic I can't remember what year. possibly 2016. I just recalled being impressed enough to remember your name, and here you are. oh wow! hey it's cool to see you playing that bc rich virgin in the looper demo!!!
Awesome video Alex. Check out some of the videos with his Memphis band, The Willys. Insane Hendrix covers. Amazing he was able to go from playing stadiums with Black Oak Arkansas at age 15 to playing incredible Indian music before passing away so young.
THank you mate... Yeah I've seen some of the crazy bootlegs out there too.... So so inspiring... What a legend.... So sad we loss him so young.... I hope in some small way my humble video will help to keep his flame burning bright in the eyes of more young guitarists today... All the best mate. 👍🎸🙏
Dear Alex, I saw you in Rome with Steven Wilson and I did appreciate your playing, so respectful of the original scores. But I've known you for seven years and I know you're so technical and melodic at the same time, being amazing playing every style of music. Shawn Lane would be proud of you, he's been a master and so are you. You never show off, you are always so humble in spite of your mastery, so you are an example for young musicians. All the best!
Aw sir, thank you so much for your kind words.... that's one of the most wonderful comments I've ever received..You gave me a lump in my throat. It really means a lot when someone can fully appreciate, acknowledge and articulate my feelings toward playing. The master I try to always serve is simply Music, I consider it above us all and that way the ego is nowhere in sight.... if you know what I mean... I sincerely wish you all the best and thank you again for your wonderful comment. Cheers for now. 👍🙏
Wow! Shawn lane, definitely one of the best. Its very nice that great musicians like your self stay very humble which makes me realize that true greatness comes with humility.
Well... I guess its finally time for me to check out Shawn Lane, for some strange reason I never have listened to him even tho I've listened to every other artist surrounding him in the rock-jazz-fusion musical universe... if Shawn is good enough for Alex, then it's a no-brainer and there's really no excuse for my negligence... as they say, never a better time than the present!! Thanks Alex, your playing is absolutely stellar in this video as it always is, just mind-blowing chops, man. :-)
THanks so much mate, yeah give it a go... The live album is really great too as you get the vibe from the other musicians all going for it with him... Love the drummer at points also... All the best mate. 👍
Mind-blowing playing coupled with such a remarkable pedagogical ability. Thank you so much for this brilliant series! I can't wait for the next episode.
Hey Alex! Thanks for the video! ABOSLUTELY AMAZING... Musicians out there!! i truly recomend Alex packages, you will learn a lot and in a easy way! Absolutely love them! Cheers!
Definitely the scariest guitarist ever. Loving this extra level of speed from you alex. Soooo freaking articulate and musical. Makes me sick. I think i might take up the triangle.
Hey Papa, yeah man very scary.... and crazzy too... ;-) If I ever need a heavy metal triangle player I know who to call.... 😂 Nah man, I'm sure you're pretty sick yourself.... Thanks for watching mate. 🙏👍🎸
Thanks, Alex. Can't take credit for the name! 😂 Got to meet Shawn a few times. Great guy as well as a phenomenal player. R.I.P. SL 😢 Will be checking out the rest of your Guitar Gods series. I see you have one on Andy Timmons. Another favorite of mine and fantastic player. 👍
Really cool you are digging and talk about the well much missed Shawn Lane... He was a such great artist and much more than a screeder. The album Powers of ten is really an amazing album when he also showing hes talent playing piano. Great compositions. And you just play sooo fantastic Alex :) I really like when you talk about different kind of guitarplayer and show their philosophy in their playing. By the way. You did an fantastic tour with mr Steven Wilson - To the bone! Keep up the with the good spirit! 🙏 Happy Easter!
@@AlexHutchingsMusic I remember I had the opportunity to watch Shawn Lane play live together with the Swedish bass player Jonas Hellberg at a swedish club “Fashing” in Stockholm, I think 1995. What a performance! So happy when I saw you doing this episode about S. L. Blessed to have seen him! All the best to you too 🙏
Shawn lane was phenomenal and you did justice alex .check out michael romeo who also is inspired by shawns licks he uses odd groupings and can play brutally fast
Hey T Bone! Yep. That's the track I think of. I had a "Guitar on the Edge" compilation CD with it. One of the simplest heads ever then a ton of notes. Love it.
Alex can you please show us how you get the fluid sound @4:48-50, is that alternate picked or economy? How did you practice this with a metronome? Hope your finger is healing up.
Hi Mate, thanks for watching... I actually explain this exact lick in the Lesson section of this video.. Its the pentatonic part... Good luck with it... Cheers for now. 👍🎸
yes on Solo Guitar, he demonstrates sequencing every time he demonstrates he adds another, " this is 3s and 6s, but I added 5 also, now that is 4s and 5s with the one note per string arpeggio . he truly visualizes and automatically adds to what he does in a split second
Shawn Lane has soul too. Such a unique note choice. Love his songs with Bret Garsed, one of the few who could give him a run for his money. Maybe do an episode about him. Hes got a very unique approach.
Yeah i totally agree with u on guthrie sort of following shawn lane's footstep there are some similarities in their playing he himself said on an interview that shawn is one of his main influence and even you alex listening and analizing some of your guitar playing i think u have some similarities to guys like shawn lane ,allan holdsworth, greg howe etc. All of which i sincerely love to listen ... Btw Love your playing keep up the good work 👍👍👍
Like always superb work Alex, kudos for bringing up Shawn lane :) but please allow me some positive criticism, as I see a lot a people confused with the ways Shawn approached notes groupings . For instance in a lick with what he called a group of five, he didn't meant quintuplets, in which every accent would fall one the "one " of each group, and more importantly, on the beat : but instead it would be all in 16th (or 32th, whether fast or slower tempo) so that all the accents would be displaced ,not fall on the beat , and give a certain unpredictability . Same thing when he was talking about "groupings of 6", he didn't meant sextuplets , but again having a strong accent in every 6 notes of 16th notes. It's the same principle as for example playing the classic descending 4's , but playing it in sextuplets instead of 16th , the whole idea being playing licks that have strong natural accents, but not playing it in their "natural" rythmic groupings. Just my two cents, and i hope people will understand my broken english ...
Hey mate, thanks for watching and no worries, you're completely free to criticise if you wish. All I would say is I am also completely aware of grouping 5's 7's and 9's in 16th's or 32's as well. So you're quite right about that but, he did use both techniques and I simply picked this approach for this free lesson video.... I thought it would be a simpler concept to understand for people wanting to attempt to create a similar sound, rather than explain the way you mentioned, plus that's what he explains in his hour long instructional so I thought I put a different spin on it for the short time i had in this video.... Either way I hope you were still able to enjoy the vid, perhaps I'll tackle the other approach if I decide to do another one based on his great playing.. All the best man... 👍🎸🙏
@@AlexHutchingsMusic Appreciate you took it the good way ;) i'm a student of the Shawn Lane style, and wanted to share what i've learn so far by watching hundreds of clinics, and bootlegs of all kinds. I completely agree with the fact that it is simpler to start the way you did it in your vid : and again, i really appreciated watching this vid, this was some good work ...All the best to you too, and I couldn't stop laughing when you mentionned the "that would be medium speed" reference ;)

Hi Alex. I am sincere; I know little about Shawn, but you piqued my curiosity and so, as I write to you, I am listening to some Shawn songs. Really remarkable, but I still prefer your playing. Thanks for the video and I wish you a peaceful and happy Easter

Lovely dedicated video to Shawn Lane, an alien on Earth he was. Such an inspirational player and yet unbelievable and unreachable skilled as well. His compositions were so deep. Also Alex you nailed these 5 and 7 notes licks, really impressive !!
Shawn was a once in a lifetime phenomenon♥️

@@AlexHutchingsMusic Is it true he could play 18-24 notes in only one second? Is that even an thing? How about Bpm comes in mix there?

Hi, Alex, great vid and really looking forward to seeing you back with Steven Wilson live ASAP 🤘🏼
Cheers Michael, yeah shame all the tours have been cancelled hope to be back out soon though. Thanks for watching mate. 👍
One of my all time favorites. Thank you for this. Beautiful video
My pleasure mate, I'm glad you enjoyed it. All the best ;-)
Shawn Lane is a legend
100% 👍🎸🙏
Omg! My guitar god shawn lane! There was no one like shawn lane and wont be too 🤘
Hey Saran, Thanks for watching man... All the best 👍🎸🙏
@@AlexHutchingsMusic welcome🤘😎
Grey pianos flying is one of my fav from Lane💯 surely a guitar god🔝👌🏼
Awesome video Alex. Check out some of the videos with his Memphis band, The Willys. Insane Hendrix covers. Amazing he was able to go from playing stadiums with Black Oak Arkansas at age 15 to playing incredible Indian music before passing away so young.
THank you mate... Yeah I've seen some of the crazy bootlegs out there too.... So so inspiring... What a legend.... So sad we loss him so young....
I hope in some small way my humble video will help to keep his flame burning bright in the eyes of more young guitarists today... All the best mate. 👍🎸🙏
Hey Alex, check out Jeff Sipe on Bandcamp. Some awesome gigs with Lane and Hellborg, cheers
Fantastic bro! You talking about Shawn. What a tribute
My pleasure thanks for watching man 👍🎸🙏
Dear Alex, I saw you in Rome with Steven Wilson and I did appreciate your playing, so respectful of the original scores.
Hey Bryan, thats a wonderful comment thank you so much.. 🙏👍🎸
All the best mate.
I think it will change your life bro... Nice decision
Mind-blowing playing coupled with such a remarkable pedagogical ability. Thank you so much for this brilliant series! I can't wait for the next episode.
My pleasure Tom, I'm so pleased you're enjoying it.... Thanks for watching and your kind words. All the best 👍

Thank you mate... Glad you enjoyed the video and my instructional stuff too.... All the best 👍🙏
Great work, Alex. Glad to see some Shawn Lane love on here. Your playing is awesome, my friend!
Thank you so much kip who can ignore Shawn Lane's brilliance? Also, I love the name Kip, it's totally cool. All the best 👍🎸🙏
Hey Pär, Thank you very much.... I enjoyed this one, what a legend he was.... I'm glad you enjoyed the tour too... All the very best 👍
All the best to you too 🙏
Your an absolutely guitarist, love your influences.
Great video and playing Alex! Thanks for the lesson ☺️
My pleasure Selim.... Thanks for watching. 👍
Shawn lane was phenomenal and you did justice alex .check out michael romeo who also is inspired by shawns licks he uses odd groupings and can play brutally fast
Thank you very much mate.... Yeah I remember Michael Romeo I defo checked him out a lot back in the day..... Thanks for watching mate.
👍🎸🙏
I always appreciate when people pay respect to Michael Romeo, he is so underrated and his skills are out of this world
@@chilepeulla very effortless player his songwriting riffs and overall is world class i think he deserves more respect for his songs
@@chilepeulla Yeah man he is great I remember being very impressed when I first heard him. Thx for watching 👍
Absolutely brilliant guitarris shawn lane... you can easily hear his influence in a lots of modern guitarrists
Yes mate, a very influential dude for sure. Thanks for stopping by. 🙏🎸👍

Hahaha thanks mate..... I'm sure you'll get some sweeps soon enough.... Stay tuned and all the best... 👍🎸🙏
Hey T Bone! Yep. That's the track I think of. I had a "Guitar on the Edge" compilation CD with it. One of the simplest heads ever then a ton of notes. Love it.
Hahahah exactly.... Glad you enjoyed it too... All the best mate. 👍🎸
I'm a big fan of Shawn Lane. Thanks for this Alex. Much love from Jakarta ❤️❤️❤️.
My pleasure mate. Thanks for watching 👍🎸😎🤘

Thank you Roy... I'm glad you enjoyed it. All the best 👍
Amazing timing as its only this past week I've really started to listen to his music!
Hello Dr Rock. Cool, I hope you enjoyed it... I've also really enjoyed listening to his music all week. Cheers for now.
Overshadowed by Holdsworth maybe? Glad that you're putting the spotlight on him!
Yeah tough to say, but 100% he needed to be on this list for me.... What a guy... Thanks for watching, 👍🎸🙏
Alex. I’m moving nxt door brother. Absolutely insane playing as we should expect from you maestro. Keep it coming mate
Hahahah nice one, bring a pack of beers with ya..... Catch you later mate and thanks for watching. 🙏👍🎸
yes on Solo Guitar, he demonstrates sequencing
every time he demonstrates he adds another, " this is 3s and 6s, but I added 5 also, now that is 4s and 5s with the one note per string arpeggio .
he truly visualizes and automatically adds to what he does in a split second
Shawn Lane has soul too. Such a unique note choice. Love his songs with Bret Garsed, one of the few who could give him a run for his money. Maybe do an episode about him. Hes got a very unique approach.
Yeah man, a great soul... Brett is also wonderful, I've met him a few times too... What a wonderful guy... Thanks for watching mate.
Awesome playing.
Btw Love your playing keep up the good work 👍👍👍
Thanks so much mate, I take your comment as a huge compliment... All the best to you 👍
Like always superb work Alex, kudos for bringing up Shawn lane :) but please allow me some positive criticism, as I see a lot a people confused with the ways Shawn approached notes groupings .
@@florian6240 😂🤣😂 Hey man sorry I don't know why but I've only just seen this... Yeah man the medium speed thing always cracks me up too... All the best dude. 👍🙏
You are the best guitar player in the world !!!🌎 👍🤘👏👏👏 Thank you very much!!!🙏
Thank you mate, thats kind of you to say so.... Thanks for watching.
Lane's rules. Amazing playing!!!
Yeah man, a true great. Thanks for watching man. 👍
shawn was a monster and way ahead of his time.
Absolutely, thanks for watching. 👍🎸🙏
Love Alex H phenomenal creative guitarist ...
Thank you mate, much appreciated. 🎸🙏
Alex Hutchings do you have a solo album out yet ?
Made myself concentrate on what your right (picking hand) was doing this time Alex. Would be impossible to replicate the technique Shawn Lane displayed without total unison of both hands. The tone you used was insane too! 👌🤘
Thanks ever so much mate, good luck with the licks and enjoy. Have a great weekend. 👍
🤣🤣😝 you are the best sir wow,,
THank you brother. 👍🎸🙏
Hi Alex. I am sincere; I know little about Shawn, but you piqued my curiosity and so, as I write to you, I am listening to some Shawn songs. Really remarkable, but I still prefer your playing.
Thanks for the video and I wish you a peaceful and happy Easter
Hey Luigi, Thanks for watching the video and for checking out Shawn.... His style is certainly not for everyone but at least you have a listen... Thanks also for your kind words regarding my paying much appreciated. Cheers for now, 👍🙏🎸
Esperanto, get you back, illusions, hard case to name a few are my favorites. Keep on shredding mate
Lovely dedicated video to Shawn Lane, an alien on Earth he was. Such an inspirational player and yet unbelievable and unreachable skilled as well.
His compositions were so deep.
Also Alex you nailed these 5 and 7 notes licks, really impressive !!
THank you mate, yes I agree what a wonderful person and musician.. Incredible...! Thanks for watching. 👍🎸🙏
