According to Iron Maiden, the movie footage was from a Buster Keaton comedy movie from the silent movie era of the 1920's... the "pale-faces v. the Indians" battle was exaggerated for comic effect... it seemed to go well w/ the theme of 'Run to the Hills', which is about cowboys fighting the native American 'Indians'...
Buster Keaton was huge star and movie maker back in the early 20th century. His comedies were hugely popular w/ the likes of stars of the day like Charlie Chaplin... Laurel & Hardy... and others from the 'silent movie' era where action sequences were essential without dialogue (cos sound was not available yet in movie theaters; musicians were hired to give movies a soundtrack w/ sheet music). Those movies are hilarious - Charlie Chaplin was one of my faves... he played the character of 'the Tramp' who walked in baggy pants, oversized shoes, a cane and a bowler hat, who would always make trouble.
When movies came w/ sound in the 1930's, a lot of stars went out, because they didn't sound like their on-screen characters... Laurel & Hardy made the transition cos they sounded like they looked... but Buster Keaton did not.
Charlie Chaplin's first movie w/ sound ('Modern times') was mostly silent, but had him sing a song in total gibberish 😂 He lampooned Adolf Hitler during World War II in the movie 'The great dictator' (w/ sound) portraying both a Jewish barber and a maniac dictator 'Adenoid Heinkel' (he resembled Adolf Hitler somewhat w/ his mustache).

Iron Maiden has been my favorite band since the mid 80. It's an interesting rabbit hole to go down because they're still making new music today and some of it's pretty damn good but very different from their earlier stuff. And since you're an Eminem fan, hopefully you checked out his Rock and roll Hall of Fame induction and speech. And speaking of that induction, there may be a Judas Priest song or two you may want to discover after going down the Metallica Megadeth and Iron Maiden rabbit holes.

Read the song list off of their album "Live After Death." It's from early in their careers. All of their songs on it tell stories that have informational messages yet are less complicated than stuff from their later career. If you really want to learn something, do a live version of Rime of the Ancient Mariner. It is a 13 minute song that tells the story of Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem. The poem is covered in High School curriculum. (At least it used to be.) Read the lyrics beforehand, because they are hard to follow on a first listen. Up the Irons!

The song documents the colonization of the Americas, first by Europeans and then by Americans, from the perspective of a Cree Indian and American cavalryman. The opening verse is from the perspective of the Cree, describing his troubles as the European Americans "came across the sea", bringing the Cree "pain and misery".[6][7] The song is written from both perspectives,[8] The second verse is from the perspective of a U.S. cavalry soldier, describing his involvement in the American Indian Wars, "chasing the redskins back to their holes". The third verse is not from the perspective of any single individual, and harshly condemns the effects of American expansionism on Native Americans, resulting in the "[Americans] raping the women and wasting the men", and "enslaving the young and destroying the old"

One thing to keep in mind with them using the corny (and well before the welfare of horses was a concern in cinema) movie footage was at that time it was probably public domain and cheap if not outright free to use. Up until Metallica's One metal videos really didn't have any heavy rotation on MTV, so an act like Iron Maiden really didn't gain any benefit from producing expensive music videos.

Note in the song he refers to the Cree.
They were a tribe in what is now Canada. They were woodlands Indians not plains Indians.
They were also allies of and had friendly relations with French settlers.
When the French lost their war with England Canada became part of England.
Much of the wars against the Indians had no actual good guy bad guy sides. Just people with different interests.
Plains Indians were nomadic and didn't own land but traveled follow the bison heard.
The Dutch had a rule that any land purchased had to have records.
The Brits pretty much took what they wanted.

This song wasn't about a specific historical event. It was written characterizing the plight of western expansion and also the plight of the Native Americans against what western expansion was doing to the lands. The movie clips were from a parody film, something that you would see in a Charlie Chaplain type piece.

Think the silliness of the video is meant to juxtapose the seriousness of the sibject. I recomend 2 Minutes to Midnight that original video tells a story that still seems relevant in fact The Original 2 Minutes to Midnight Video might be more relevant now than ever. Blessings from Puerto Rico keep up the good work.

the lyrics are shocking at first but read them on a piece of paper rather than listening and you'll soon see that they do not glorify the british. quite the opposite. They show arrogance, cruelty, malice and xenophobia. War is shocking, and so is what the Europeans did to the people of north and south america and this song tells of those brutalities. This is an intelligent progressive thinking band. particularly for their time. Easy to see how it can be misunderstood though if one doesnt take the time to understand:) best band in the world

I wish that I could go back in time, and have history class, but with Bruce as the teacher. I would have paid far more attention to him.
