An interesting thing about this song is if you break down the phrases you see its the stages of grief; denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and the "hallow be thy name" at the end is acceptance.

@@cbmetal it’s just 6 lines out of 30 i guess!!! It’s not a big deal, such things happen everywhere every time with every field. 90-95% of the song is original! I've been listening to Iron Maiden since 1982, at the age of 15. To give you a complete list of Iron Maiden recommendations, see my list below. This is considered classic Heavy Metal.
    Iron Maiden is:
Bruce Dickinson - Vocals Born: August 7, 1958 (age 63 years) Started with Iron Maiden in 1981, left in 1993 and rejoined in 1999 and present singer
Steve Harris - Bassist and Founder Born: March 12, 1956 (age 66 years), Started the band in 1975 and has never left
    Dave Murray - Guitarist Born: December 23, 1956 (age 65 years), 1976-1977, 1978- present
    Adrian Smith - Guitarist Born: February 27, 1957 (age 65 years), 1980-1990, 1999-present
    Janick Gers - Guiarist Born: January 27, 1957 (age 65 years), 1990 - present
    Nicko McBrain - Drums Born: June 5, 1952 (age 70 years), 1982 - present
Highlight of songs I'd recommend are:
    From Iron Maiden------
Phantom of the Opera - A must for live version
Strange World (this one will be totally different Iron Maiden)
    From Killers ------
Murders in the Rue Morgue (Very loosely influenced by Edgar Allen Poe's short story, a story of a fugitive being sought for murder)
Genghis Khan (an instrumental - perfect for air drumming)
Innocent Exile (continues the theme of Murders in the Rue Morgue of an unjustly accused fugitive)
Killers (A journey into the twisted mind of a deranged killer)
Prodigal Son(about a repentant man reminiscent of the prodigal son parable found in Luke 15 of the bible)
Purgatory(lyrics of song read like a poem)
Drifter (focuses on the possibility of new beginnings)
From The Number of the Beast------
Invaders (It graphically depicts the violence and horror of a defense against a Viking invasion)
The Prisoner (based on the UK television series that ran briefly in the late 1960’s)
22 Acacia Avenue (The continuation of Charlotte the Harlot)
The Number of the Beast (Inspired by a dream Bassist Steve Harris had after watching the movie the Omen2)
Run to the Hills (about the European arrival in America told from the perspective of both the oppressed Cree and the invading white soldiers)
Hallowed be Thy Name (about a man who is about to be put to death and what he goes through) *** This song
    From Piece of Mind------
Where Eagles Dare (based on an Alistair Maclean novel, (1967), and film (1968) about a WWII rescue of an American general from a Nazi stronghold in the Bavarian Alps
Revelations (Starts with the Hymnal from Oh God of Earth and Alter, the next two verses on the Hindu philosophy, the third verse in Yoga a snake called Kundalini that lives at the base of your spinal cord, during meditation a spiritual entity is created symbolizing the transcendental union with God)
Flight of Icarus (loosely based on the ancient Greek myth of Icarus)
The Trooper (based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854,which took place during the Crimean War)
To Tame a Land (the song relays the story of Paul Atreides, Paul Muad'Dib, from the book Dune by Frank Herbert)
    From Powerslave------
Aces High (about aircraft dog fighting between the British and German fighter pilots of WWII)
2 Minutes to Midnight - About the Doomsday clock for the End of the World
Back in The Village (The continuation of the song The Prisoner)
Powerslave (about an arrogant pharaoh in his dying hours, he can't understand why he's about to die and fights it in vain)
Rime of the Ancient Mariner - (From the poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (story about about an ocean voyage)
    From Somewhere in Time-------
Wasted Years (A song about the admonition to appreciate the present and not to take things for granted)
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (based on a short story of Alan Sillitoe which was made into a 1962 film
Alexander the Great (About the story of Alexander the Great
From 7th Son of a 7th Son (a concept album)------
Infinite Dreams (Detailing someone who is tormented by paranormal dreams and nightmares)
The Evil That Men Do (Title taken from a quote in Shakespeare Julius Caesar but the song is unrelated)
The Clairvoyant (relates the reflections of the 7th Son of the 7th Son on his life and his powers)
    From Fear of the Dark------
Wasting Love (About the emptiness of relationships without love. Another Maiden ballad)
Fear of the Dark (About being afraid of the dark and the things in the dark that might be there - absolute a live performance for this one)
    From Brave New World------
The Wicker Man (about the apathy of our modern society and our egotistic disinterest of what is happening until something happens to us)
Ghost of the Navigator (The lyrics are a metaphor of life, with the ship sailing west towards the setting sun representing death)
Brave New World (Loosely based on the 1932 novel by Aldous Huxley)
Dream of Mirrors (Yet another song about reoccurring and maybe premonitory dreams)
Out of the Silent Planet (Supposedly inspired by the 1956 science -fiction film Forbidden Planet)
    From Dance of Death------
No More Lies (The lyrics deal with someone knows his time has come with the possibility of reincarnation)
Dance of Death (Orinally inspired by Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film The Seventh Seal - Another one to do as a live performance)
Paschendale (about the Battle of Passchendaele during WWI)
From A Matter of Life and Death------
Brighter than a Thousand Suns (About the dawn of the nuclear bomb age)
The Longest Day (about the WWII Normandy Invasion)
Out of the Shadows (About being born)

yo Lilly!! bless you for checking this out! Love this band. Loving you and this reaction right now. Maiden has historically been one of the great live shows ever!!!
Lead singer is Bruce Dickenson. He is quite unique and has an amazing voice and always so theatrical and energetic on stage - still going at it at 65! (He also is a pilot and flies their touring jumbo jet). I'm going to see them LIVE here in California in a few weeks. That will 6 times for me. Can't wait!

    The Trooper
Fear of the Dark (Live in Brazil)
    Flight of Icarus
    Power Slave
    The Prisoner.

Amazing reaction my friend Lilly!!....In 2017, the music world was shocked by the bursting onto the scene of a 22-year-old singer named Dimash Kudaibergen, who performed on the famous Chinese competition show for professional singers called “The Singer”... It was just It was necessary for this young man to make his first appearance, making a cover of one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse", to be considered from that moment on as the best singer in the entire planet....No one in the musical field had ever seen a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges above 7 octaves and several semitones, that is, all 88 keys of a digital piano, which reaches a little more than 7 octaves and as if that weren't enough, sing the more than 12 languages...Since then all kinds of experts (Vocal coach, analysts, singing teachers, youtubers, reactors, etc.) have dedicated themselves to reviewing their presentations to try to understand how someone can sing this way...The incredible thing is that that presentation in China was in 2017 and 5 years have passed since then, but what Dimash has done in these 5 years is to further improve his wide vocal range, which is currently practically above of the 8 octaves... The Covid pandemic stopped his concerts worldwide, all with tickets sold in just seconds, via the internet, but at the same time it ended up catapulting him to the top of popularity worldwide...Anyway, since I think you are one of those reactors who have not yet met this impressive singer, here is the link of that presentation in China in 2017, with the song S.O.S. and I would like you to mention my name as the person who recommended him to you...You have to be prepared because you ar going to receive an avalanche of views, comments and new subscribers....I leave you one more recent video than the others, so it does not have the same number of views as the previous ones, which have millions of views, but it is a more complete video, with an intro, subtitles in several languages and with the improved quality of audio and sound....ruclips.net/video/bDX3FhmyNac/видео.html

I'm 49 and I grew up with three older sisters who between them brought me up in the late 70's to mid 80's musically with a combination of classic rock, metal, indie, alternative, punk and new wave. The first live band I ever saw was Maiden at the NEC, Birmingham, UK back in 1988 when I was 15. They blew me away and they are definitely one of the all-time greats of metal. This song in particular is truly one of my all-time favourite heavy metal songs. It has everything! Slow build up, tension, drama, theatrics, high notes, low notes, Bruce Dickinson hanging on in there for really bloody long notes. Superb lyrics. Amazing guitar solo. Fabulous guitar harmonies between Adrain Smith and Dave Murray. Cracking drumming from the late, great Clive Burr (before the long running legend Nicko McBrain took over the sticks). The master and main man behind Maiden, Steve Harris driving it all with those filthy bass lines. It's just the absolute perfect heavy metal song to me. I know others may well disagree. This is just purely my own opinion :) It's great to see the younger generation still having huge love for classic bands like these :)

Awesome you're getting into Maiden, Lil! At the time of the "Number Of The Beast" recording, the band's lineup consisted of Bruce Dickenson on vocals, Dave Murray & Adrian Smith on guitars, Steve Harris on bass, and Clive Burr on drums. "Run To The Hills" is my personal fave from the NOTB album, but dang near every track off their next album, "Piece of Mind," is a no-miss banger!

I don’t know much beyond their 80s work. Their first two albums have a different singer, they changed drummers after this album and Nicko McBrain has been their drummer ever seen. Their most consistent lineup is Steve Harris on bass, Dave Murray on guitar, Bruce Dickinson vocals, Nicko McBrain on drums, Adrian Smith on guitar. And they’re all in the band now. Iron Maiden is a classic heavy metal band from the UK, and they have gotten more prog-oriented metal these last 2 decades... Steve Harris (bass) formed the band in 1975... Harris wrote 'Hallowed be thy name' as an ode to a man's final hour before his execution, not as a religious statement, but more about his final thoughts about his faith... it came out in 1982 on Maiden's 3rd album 'The number of the beast'. The band on this recording was Bruce Dickinson (vocals), Dave Murray & Adrian Smith (guitars), Steve Harris (bass) and (the late) Clive Burr (drums)... Burr was replaced by Nicko McBrain (drums) in 1983... Clive Burr passed away from MS in 2013.
Iron Maiden was formed in London, UK by bassist Steve Harris in 1975 after he had started writing original songs, but couldn't convince a band to play them, cos they were complicated pieces of music w/ time changes and prog elements. Iron Maiden would be his vehicle for performing his songs. They were a bar and club band for years and went through various members from 1975 to 1979... Dave Murray (guitar) would join in 1976 and became a permanent member by 1977... Paul Di'Anno (vocals) joined in 1977 w/ drummer Doug Sampson. Iron Maiden was finally signed in 1979, just as Sampson left the band... Clive Burr (drums) and Dennis Stratton (guitar) were added to the line-up and recorded the first Iron Maiden album in 1980.
Maiden's manager got a local artist Derek Riggs for the first album cover of a shriveled ghoul in the dark streets of London w/ hollow eyes - that became Iron Maiden's mascot 'Eddie the head'... and was used on every Maiden album cover (and singles & t-shirts) in different iterations.
The first Iron Maiden album shocked everyone by going top 5 in the UK... Adrian Smith (guitar) replaced Dennis Stratton for the next album 'Killers' in 1981, w/ veteran producer Martin Birch working w/ Maiden in the studio. The band played the US and Japan for the first time... However, vocalist Paul Di'Anno was burning out on drugs and alcohol while touring and parted ways w/ Maiden in '81.
Bruce Dickinson (vocals) joined for Maiden's 3rd album 'The number of the beast' in 1982, and the band's popularity skyrocketed as the album hit the UK charts at #1 and went platinum in the US... Nicko McBrain (drums) replaced Clive Burr in 1983 for the 'Piece of mind' album... Iron Maiden were now headlining arenas and delivering platinum selling records going into 1984 w/ the 'Powerslave' album, and touring everywhere they could, including South America for the first time. The band issued the live album 'Live after death' in 1985.
Maiden returned in 1986 w/ 'Somewhere in time' and were more popular than ever... but the band's internal conflicts were beginning. After the 'Seventh son of a seventh son' album in 1988, guitarist Adrian Smith left the band.
In 1990, the band replaced Smith w/ Janick Gers (guitar) and released 'No prayer for the dying' ... but Maiden's popularity in the 90's was starting to wane in the US... the album 'Fear of the dark' in 1992 marked the last album w/ producer Martin Birch. It went to #1 on the UK charts. But in 1993, vocalist Bruce Dickinson announced that he was leaving the band for a solo career.
Iron Maiden hired vocalist Blaze Bayley and recorded the rather dark album 'The X Factor' in 1995, but in the wake of 90's grunge and alternative rock, Maiden's brand of metal was not in demand and the record was a commercial disappointment... Fans also did not approve of Blaze Bayley's vocal style that was different from Dickinson's. The next album 'Virtual XI' in 1998 was their poorest-selling record of Maiden's career.
In 1999, the decision was made to fire Blaze Bayley... Bruce Dickinson and guitarist Adrian Smith expressed interest in coming back, so both rejoined Iron Maiden that year and announced a reunion tour, making Iron Maiden a 3-guitar band for the first time w/ Dave Murray, Janick Gers and Adrian Smith... Their 2000 album 'Brave new world' was a huge comeback for Iron Maiden.
Since then, Iron Maiden has issued more records that have hit the US and UK charts as their fanbase grew once again, all over the world... Their music was also becoming more challenging w/ longer prog elements. They released the albums 'Dance of death' (2003)... 'A matter of life and death' (2006)... 'The Final Frontier' (2010).
While recording the album 'The book of souls' in 2014, vocalist Bruce Dickinson had to be treated for oral cancer... The album was released in 2015, but Maiden would not tour until 2016, after Bruce Dickinson got a clean bill of health.
In 2021, Iron Maiden released their newest album 'Senjutsu' and are on the road celebrating 40+ years of the band's career.

This album " Number of The Beast " &
Judas Priest " Screaming For Vengance"
Cemented the term Heavy Metal as a genre in the States. The term existed prior but this was the moment that really separated it. Both came out at the same time. 82 ( both band's toured together)
    Suggestions
    Iron Maiden-
    1) Run to Hills
    2) The Prisoner
    Judas Priest
    1) The Hellion / Electric Eye
    2) Screaming for Vengance

Did you notice that the song seems a bit samish till he sings "catch my soul, it's willing to fly away..." then takes off with the crazy soloing - that's a deliberate stylistic move, mirroring the restrictions of his prison cell and subsequent release of the soul upon hanging. Great song.

1:24 Actually, Lilly Jane, Metallica drew inspiration from this song, and not Iron Maiden from Metallica, because Maiden's album was released two years prior to Metallica's one. So you'd better make researches before saying something, Iron Maiden are a waaay better band, this song of theirs has had dozens of covers, it's easily the most influential metal song ever, and METALLICA knew this very well in 1984, when they released Ride the Lightning, which contains For whom the bell tolls

    @HEAVYMETALmovie1981 2 года назад

I believe this is what they call *POWER METAL*
And Power metal is a subgenre of heavy metal combining characteristics of traditional heavy metal with speed metal, often within symphonic context. Generally, power metal is characterized by a faster, lighter, and more uplifting sound, in contrast with the heaviness and dissonance prevalent, for example, in extreme metal. Power metal bands usually have anthem-like songs with fantasy-based subject matter and strong choruses, thus creating a theatrical, dramatic and emotionally "powerful" sound.
The term was first used in the mid-1980s and refers to two different but related styles:
According to what I dug up, the first pioneered and largely practiced in North America with a harder sound similar to speed metal,
a later, more widespread and popular style based in Europe (especially Scandinavia, Germany, Greece, Spain, and Italy, South America (especially Brazil and Argentina) and East Asia with a lighter, more melodic sound and frequent use of keyboards.
British bands like Iron Maiden, brought epic and melodic sensibility to metal, creating anthemic, singalong music, an approach widely embraced by modern power metal musicians. The emergence of the early German power-metal scene in particular was made possible by Scorpions and Accept. Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen made a significant impact on many future power metal guitarists, with his accurate and fast neo-classical style. His bandmate Jens Johansson modernized the keyboard sound of Deep Purple's Jon Lord, which was further incorporated into the genre. Manowar's mythological sword and sorcery lyrics influenced a number of power metal bands.
Throughout the early 1980s especially in the years 1982 and 1983, a US power metal style first emerged from traditional heavy metal, the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM), and thrash/speed metal influences. The exact first origin is often contested, but bands such as Cirith Ungol, Jag Panzer, Manilla Road, Omen, Riot, Savatage, and Warlord are thought to have influenced the earliest development of the style.[7][8]
More concretely, in 1987 German band Helloween released their second album, Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part I, cited by AllMusic as "a landmark recording that remains arguably the single most influential power metal album to date. Its volatile combination of power and melody would inspire an entire generation of metal bands".[9] This release influenced a European power metal style to evolve, which proliferated throughout the globe and since the start of the 1990s is still the most commonly heard style of power metal.

One thing you'll find out about Maiden is that their lyrics are HIGHLY narrative, and many of their songs tell a story, often steeped in history and mythology (Aces High, for instance, is about the Battle of Britain during WWII).
