Everything to Know about Spray Finishing Woodworking Projects

  • There are so many options for applying finish to your woodworking projects, let me share my setup so you can have what I think is the best finishing setup for your workshop. This will be a comprehensive guide to the best spray finishing setup for you. My finishing system is built around a Fuji Spray Systems Q5 platinum on a rolling Harbor Freight tools box in a flashy (almost) DIYTyler orange. Being on a rolling cart is very handy as I do not have a permanent spray location and this allows me to roll out to where I need to finish my projects and get right to work.
    The the top shelf of the tool cart I have measuring spoons for mixing different finishes, latex gloves, filter stand, finish filters and my 3M full face respirator. This is the only method I have found that allows me to protect my eyes and not fog up at the same time, EVERYthing else foggs up.
    There is a drawer that houses the different Fuji gun tips, cleaning kit and various wrenches and can openers.
    Next tool box drawer houses some mixing cups, other cups for dipping out small portions of finish, PPS 2.0 Caps and two sizes of PPS 2.0 lids (Midi and Standard lids...which I believe are the only two sizes.)
    I then have a drawer that houses some Ford #4 viscosity cups, replacement gaskets and fittings and some respirator face shield protectors.
    Next drawer has some chip brushes, rags, sandpaper and a replacement turbine filter for the Q5.
    The most exciting drawer is the one that houses all the different cups. This has the original aluminum cup that comes with the T70 siphone spray gun, the 600ML nylon cup that comes with the T75G gun, the small 250ML nylon cups for the T70, and all the different size 3M PPS 2.0 cups and liners. I have the 22oz standard liners, 13.5oz midi liners and 6oz mini liners along with the small and standard size H/O (High output) hard cups that are needed to integrate the Fuji guns with the PPS system.

    I loooooove the pps system!
    I use the first gen in midi (13.5 oz) size with my QS125WB since I spray mostly small projects. Once I run out of the liners for that one I'll switch to the 2.0 system. I definitely want a fuji sprayer (again) though. I had a mini mite 4 a while back and absolutely loved it, but had to take a break from woodworking for health reasons, so I sold it. I'll grab the mini mite 5 this time.
    Some great ideas in this video, especially the logbook and a dispenser for the brown paper. I have a huge roll I just cut sheets off of and tape to the wall. Definitely adding a dispenser to my shop.

    Good video, Tyler, but those of us who have never used a spray gun (or cleaned one) do not know about many of the tools you were describing. A short series on using and cleaning spray guns would be very useful to me and perhaps others.

      David Abineri I agree. It seems it takes longer to set up the gun and clean it than it does to use the gun. I build small projects and this is one reason I haven’t purchased a gun.

    You can pull out the drawers that you might want to get into just enough that they won't get caught in the lock before you use the top asa temporary fix. HF also has a magnetic paper towel holder that might work for your brown paper.

    I don’t know much about fugi spray guns, but I use the complete 3m accu-spray system (including the gun). Tips can be disposed of after a handful of uses, and there are multiple tip options for different type of materials. I keep one cup full of thinner on hand and after I’m done spraying I pop off the cup with the finish, pop on the thinner, spray for 10 seconds in my clean out tank and I’m done. No taking apart guns, cleaning tips, etc etc. The disposable cups are worth every penny.

    I've been looking for info on the best paint spraying system that would work for my line of work (I do apartment maintenance/remodels/repair etc, all of which is only periodic since it covers a huge range of work that isn't consistent repeat stuff) and I just had to sign into my account on my parents' computer to comment because this video was awesome for the content provided. I saw it wasn't registering as doing well in some of the much older comments from a year ago which seems tragic because of all the videos searching various paint sprayers and types, while you didn't go in depth on the actual sprayer which is how I located this video through a 'related' search, you provided some great content that answered a lot of my issues I've been dealing with.
    Most of my jobs are too small to worry about busting out a huge airless/fine finish sprayer we have and I'd been struggling with an HVLP meant for car work and people who have huge high-end high-cfm compressor setups, neither of which I have. After just spraying a couple floating vanities I'm building with primer and trying out my parents' 20 gallon compressor to see if it faired better with the hvlp setup than my smaller volume compressors, I think I've determined a standalone sprayer like the fuji mini-mite or q-series is the way to go- but I was still at a loss of how to deal with all the mess of reducing viscosity if needed etc etc, cleanup, filter work etc, and this video answered ALL of the latter questions and issues I've been dealing with. Since I'm stuck in California and can't use the amazing dry speed of lacquer finishes, I'm stuck with slower water-based latex most of the time and to lay a decently thick coat to allow for sanding and extra filling, I am pretty sure the standalone with the 3m system is definitely going to be the way to go, especially seeing that there's other attachments to allow for spraying higher volumes of paint like my current case where the 1-quart limit is just too restricting for priming 2 vanities.
    Anyways- I just wanted to take the time to sign in and let you know that even now in the Covid era- almost a year later, this has been an EXTREMELY helpful video for someone such as myself. I actually already have that same colored cart from Harbor Freight so short of the whole paint system, this video already totally appealed to me. Now to just figure out which sprayer to invest in so I'm prepared in the future instead of not having it when I need it.

    They make an anti-fog material that i use for scuba diving. Get a gallon can heater! I use it with WB and nice thick tung oil varnish. Don't use it with a heavy hot vapor it reduces the viscosity nicely... the fan is to be perpendicular to the surface. Angles then flats are done first. The normal 4.0 per coating for me with the WFT gauge also I have a DFT gauge to as some are different depending on solides in the materials. I have discovered the TDS sheet is off more times than on with these measurements... i'm sure you have learned these by now and there are many more things you will learn. A quiet vacuum is another...

    Hi Tyler. Just saw your video today and found it very informative, thank you! I do have a question regarding you cart and system. I heard that Fuji says that you should be operating your system off the floor as opposed to being higher on a shelf or in a cart to potentially avoid creating a kink in the hose due to the lack of support. However, I’ve noticed that you have your system up on the bottom shelf. I also see however that you have the hose going around and looped on your hose support before having the rest of it running on the floor. Is your set up done to avoid having potential kinks instead of having the hose directly going from the bottom shelf onto the floor?

      Never used the 1.0 as I only got the large cup and it was too big so I sold it. 2.0 is awesome, again I have used the large H/O cup once and would not get it again. The smaller cut holds the midi liners and is perfect! I have only sprayed latex once, slightly thinned, and there was no issue.

    Did you jump from the HF gun setup to the Q5 or did you have another turbine before? I'm eyeing the Semi-Pro 2 for refinishing cabinets (primer and paint) and woodworking finishes. I have limited experience w/ a HF gun and want a true HVLP system.
    Did the Fuji guys speak to the major differences a beginner and weekend warrior-type person would need between a two stage and three or four stage? Thanks!

    • @DIYTyler

      I had a few homeright systems in there.
      The different fuji systems are really dependent on what you plan on spraying. The Q5 covers everything you can throw at it. Semi and Mini-Mite are for thinner topcoats and probably no paint. The Q5 has speed control on the turbine which comes in handy.

    Great video. Very helpful. I just picked up a 4-drawer USG cart for my Q5. Thanks for the recommendation. Great idea.
    Question. You have two laminated charts on the inside of the cart’s lid. What chart is on the left?

      If I remember right that is the tip size for a Graco x17 airless paint sprayer.

    Do you think moving from a 3 stage to a 4 is worth the extra cost if you primarily spray clear finishes and only occasionally latex.

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  4 года назад

      Hmm, probably not BUT the $75 will be better spent now when you need it later and don't have it! You can likely thin your latex down a bit more and can probably use the 3 stage anyway.

    Great Video, I recently purchased the Q5 and for the life of me cant seem to get that sweet spot for atomization for latex. If you could do a video of the spray process from mixing through spraying that would be awesome. Thanks for making the videos.

      What tip are you using?
      I think I may do a series of tips for spraying but probably not on RUclips, especially seeing the poor performance of this video. Maybe on my site or on Instagram instead.

      @@DIYTyler well I just found out why lol one of the seals in the t75, the air divider seal, fell out when I put the new tip in so that is probably the problem. I'm using the 1.8.

    • @TheAshleyspop
      @TheAshleyspop 4 года назад

      @@DIYTyler also I'm surprised that this video has poor performance as I thought is was a great video.

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  4 года назад

      That could certainly be part of it! Make sure the metal insert in there (air splitter) is oriented properly as well.
      1.8 is good, using too small a tip was on of my first mistakes when spraying latex
      Frustrating bit is latex is all different viscosity so one brand will be different from another. I have sprayed straight out of the can with a 1.8 tip full power and had great results.
      Thicker paint I will thin with an ounce of water and an ounce of floetrol, 6 or 8 ounces of paint. Foetrol is pretty amazing my the way, even if the spray doesnt look all that great it will allow the paint to spread better, recommend using some.
      Moral of the story, try and try, keep a log so you have notes of what worked, what worked better and what failed.

    Hey Tyler, great video, love the dedicated toolbox! I might have missed it, but can to mention why you have the two different styles of guns? I’ve heard of people having dedicated guns for spraying latex paint and a different gun for clears so you don’t risk contamination. Was wondering if you had any issues with spraying different materials and avoiding cross contamination. I recently finished spraying General Finishes White Poly (amazing finish) and noticed white poly in the internal guts of the gun, and struggled to get it out.

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  4 года назад

      General finishes product is my go to for finish!
      Have two different styles because I wanted a second gun and didn't want to get the same style. That said I actually think I prefer the T70G, seems to balance a little better. Regardless of the style having two guns is a huge time saver for me as I can have two finishes going at the same time.
      Have sprayed gallons of whites and grays, no issue with cleaning the guns. Fuji has a great cleaning kit with all sorts of tools and their guns are elegantly simple so they clean very easily.
      You have Fuji stuff or another brand?

      @@DIYTyler Thanks for the feedback! I considered a turbine system but wanted to spray latex and didn't want to invest in a stage 4,5 or 6 turbine. So I went with an LVLP gun (due to smaller compressor output of 6.4 CFM at 40psi) from Jeff Jewitt at homesteadfinishingproducts.com. Jeff has written a lot over the years on finishing and is a great guy to get advice on getting starting in spraying. For about $350 I got an all stainless steel gun that's rebuildable and has great atomization. The kit came with 3 tips and has everything I needed (including PPS system) to spray nearly everything. I'm now considering a second gun for dedicated clear finishes. I was even able to spray General Finishes White Undercoat Primer with a 1.5mm tip - the primer was so thick the paint stick would stand up in the middle of the gallon can!

    i'm 8 months into my new hobby career as a woodworker furniture builder. my son has a pile of what he calls great high end guns from years ago when he tried to spray motorcycles and etc. they are all air powered. I'm about ready to get off the brush and into spraying. should i try to use those or just buy a HVLP fan powered sprayer. money doesn't bother me.

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  3 года назад

      Rodney....if money doesn't bother you I take a ..... lol!
      They each have their places, you will get more amortization power with a air powered HVLP, but you need a big compressor and water seperation system....for hobby I would go with a Fuji like this one, if you want compressor for thicker materials you can get good Fuji guns as well. I am a huge fan of my system, sprayed tons at this point....always spray, never brush!

    Tyler, great video and yes hf is having a Black Friday sale so I’ll be adding this set up to my shop soon! I have the Fuji Q4 and the directions say to always have the unit on the ground/floor. Do you remove yours from the bottom shelf or is it fine on the cart? I noticed you have a plate or plywood underneath. Is that for clearance?

    • @ronc4146
      @ronc4146 Год назад

      It appears so. The hose hookup is only like an inch from the floor, so it needs a bit of a "lift" to allow the hose to be connected.

    Think about getting a humidor hygrometer/thermometer combo to attach to the cart. That way you know the exact humidity and temp, instead of relying on one from an app or weather station. Those measurements are taken from miles away and don't reflect the actual finishing environment.

    Hello Tyler. Great video!! Do you use seperate guns for paint & clearcoats?

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  3 года назад

      Thanks Keith. Not really, switch up to what I need. If I sprayed more solvent based stuff I would dedicate one gun to that and one to water based (or get another). Typically I use the T75G for whatever will take me longer, balance of the gun is better.
      If I have a ton to spray and need a pressure pot I use the T70.

    Love the video/description on the PPS parts. You can’t even get that kinda information from any paint store or if you can even get 3M on the phone. Very tricky to get the whole setup at a reasonably low price
    Then spent the cash for the (Fuji mini mite 5 T75g)
    Then spent $250 on the entire 3M PPS setup
    The prices for everything vary in price dramatically from store to store. Actually still waiting on 1/7/21 to get the right cup. These fools ordered the wrong cup, it was supposed to be the 2.0 H/O cup, kinda frustrating
