For the compressor you want to try and match the min CFM. Remember at 10 psi the CFM goes up on your compressor more than you think. Don't waste your money see my link.

Where do you buy your air filters from or do they come with the guns?
@@BODGE71 comes with the guns
So could I use a small craftsman 5g compressor or is that to small should I find something around 8g or.higher
Is that Chris Salmone’s partner in this video with you?
Do you recommend the same setup for stains as well?
Anyway you can talk about air compressor as well please. What type, how big and what to know about it in order to have a good quality finish for furniture. Thanks
I second that. Just bought a husky 60 gal compressor and want to know what I need to do to it in regards to like what type of filters / air cleaners you use
Great info. Ty so much!!
Do you have any specific recommendations for spraying stain through an HVLP? I've sprayed Lacquer and had great results but I would love to stop brushing stain.
I thought I am watching Jimmy Kimmel show. Did someone tell you you have uncanny resemblance?
I think it would be worthy of note to mention that as you widen the fan, the material coverage will be less. So as you widen (or narrow) you fan size, double check your material coverage.
Your hair didn’t move sprayed that too
I love hvlp I use the Devilbiss that takes a zip lock bag inside the cup so you can spray in all directions and never have your gun skip from losing suction plus clean up is easier
What a great overview. Maybe the best I have been able to fine all over RUclips. Thank you for taking the time to make this!
Great timing on this. 2 quick questions / clarifications:
1. Can you use regular latex paints in these sprayers? If so, mixing recommendations?
2. Will a 6 gallon pancake compressor work?
What did you do to get the insides of the shelf covered with an even finish?
Hope and pray hahaha
@@katzmosestools ...Don't you mean "Hope and Spray!!" Lol - Great video and information! Thank you for posting. K
apply finish before assembling
Very useful information. Thank you
Hey, I could use that truck tail gate in the back ground. Want to get it out of there?
Thanks Jonathan. I am proficient with Syphon feed spraying, but wanted to get into HVLP for a while now. Thanks so much for giving me some basic direction. God Bless U and Yours.
Aren't the guns you use in this video really "conversion" guns, not HVLP guns? When I think HVLP I think 5 psi (that's the Low Pressure in HVLP) with 10-20 cfm (High Volume). These guns must be run at much higher pressure (about 50 cfm) and low volume (3-5 cfm).
I make this point for two reasons: First, these guns can't be connected to an HVLP turbine. They're designed to run off of a regular compressor. So if, like me, you have something like the Fuji SemiPro, these guns are useless to you.
Second, and this I can assert from first-hand observation, these guns are much less efficient. They overspray a lot more than an HVLP setup.
And third, am I totally wrong about this? Does HVLP not mean what I think it means?
Jonathan- Is there any advantage to lvlp? I can’t find your exact kit on Amazon, but this is what I found…AEROPRO TOOLS R500 LVLP Air Spray Gun with 1.3/1.5/1.7mm Nozzles & Air Regulator, A610 Paint Guns Automotive, Car Paint Gun Sprayer, Paint Gun for House Painting, Car, Furniture, Varnish and Top Coat
That was helpful. Always wondered how those guns work. Thanks for sharing. Great vid. : )
Ditto
Any thoughts on a HVLP + compressor setup like this, versus the Earlex/Homeright Super Finish Max? I'm definitely more interested in the simplified form factor of the Super Finish Max, and it seems to work well for a lot of folks...
Great video!
The kit comes with diferent nozzle diameters. 1.0mm, 1.4mm and 1.8mm. Which one do you use for different finishes?
Thanks
New to your channel today, some really good stuff.
My wife and I started a business in our home recently, as I was forced to take an extended leave from my profession, manufacturing process engineering, and production, management, and I am not the type of person to just sit on the couch doing nothing.
So, we combined my prior experiences, with my education, and a particular passion of mine, music and musical instruments, with my wife's passion for art and color, as well as her work experience dealing with customers and the public, and we are building handmade, custom, electric guitars and basses.
We are at the point now where we are looking at options for improving our finishing methods, and are looking for information regarding the differences, the pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses, in comparing HVLP with LVLP systems. We only have a small compressor and we are only finishing, at most, 3 instruments at a time, often just one instrument.
We build all of our instruments using only high quality exotic and domestic hard woods, tone woods, many of them being highly figured pieces of these woods.
So we will almost never be using paint, and opaque coloring, covering up these extremely beautiful, and extremely valuable, pieces. Applications of stains, dies, or other pigments for coloring, will usually be done by hand, or with a small airbrush kit that we have. The HVLP or LVLP system would be almost exclusively used for finishing of the instruments, like an application of a poly, a lacquer, etc.
Any advice, Insight, or information, would be greatly appreciated!
Thank You
I could spend hours answering this. Best advice I can give you is work hard and stay true to your passion. Sounds like you're on the right track. Cheers
Thank you for the awesome video! When I watch your videos I always feel empowered to do the projects after.
Thanks bud! That means a lot!
So how well would this work for a production setting? Our company uses water based polyurethane. We push out 75-100 end table stumps(3 coats of poly) and 20-30 tables (4 coats of poly. coffee tables, sofa tables, benches, and dining tables) a week. Just wondering if this would be practical or would we have to refill the hopper an obscene amount of times
There were many typos in my previous comment. Do you have any tips for making Alkyd Day Glo oil based paint stick to wood ? I tried primer. That didn’t work. I’ll mix the paint three parts paint, and one part paint thinner. I am thinking that maybe the paint dries in mid air before it even hits the word because it has been atomize to be such a small particle once it leaves the gun . Just a theory. These are for indoor blacklight golf courses in rental houses. They will be getting a lot of traffic. The paint literally brushes away like powder even after drying overnight.
What about using a LVPL spray gun for water based poly? What’s a decent sized compressor and tip?

Anyone contemplating the Fuji Q4 or similar, I've had mine for a year with the suction feed T70 gun. Really enjoy using it. I have recently started using the 3M pressure pot and find it a great addition.
I have the mini 4 and I love it. Can't imagine using anything else now that I've got my hands on it. I use the 3M pot too and it's a mandatory accessory in my opinion, being able to spray at any angle and never worry about the consistency of the paint feed is just so nice. Cleanup is a dream.
It's one of those buy one cry once purchases. Yeah I spent $1500 on my setup. Yeah, I also have perfect finishes on everything I make for the rest of my life. I doubt these things wear out to the point they can't be rebuilt.
I've sprayed everything from boat epoxy to super-thin poly and even painted a living room because I could. You've got to deliberately search to find things you can't do with a Fuji setup.
Love your videos you have a great delivery of the information. I had a question about compressed size. I imagine using an HVLP you can use a smaller compressor. If this is a correct assumption how small a compressor would you recommend.
Water always comes out the gun great. Actual paint or finish is different. Hvlp are ver time consuming.
Just FYI on the compressor vs sprayer air usage: most compressors rate themselves on SCFM (Standard cubic feet per minute, ie, 1cfm at 14.7 psi absolute), and most air tools use CFM at 60 or 90psi (~75 or 105psi absolute) to make their product look good. So if a compressor says it produces 5 SCFM at 60psi, it's perfectly matched for a tool that consumes 1 CFM at 60psi.
A standard Porter-Cable 6-gal pancake compressor produces 2.6 SCFM at 90 psi (0.36 CFM of 90psi air). Your air sprayer specs out at about 5 CFM at 45psi (20 SCFM). So that compressor is going to need something like 8 seconds to recover for every second of using that sprayer; not unworkable but not ideal. It's dumb and confusing, and has lead to many an undersized compressor.
What formula are you using to calculate this? I'm trying to decide on an appropriate size compressor to get for doing HVLP spraying as a hobbyist or to just get a small compressor and a turbine system.
Jonathan recommended an 8 gallon compressor that he said works great. 3.7 @ 90 PSI. Could that be correct? He has the link posted
Thank you so much for doing this buddy.
Exactly what I needed as I look at HVLP guns.....Thank you
So I’m trying to spray polyurethane out of my hvlp gun, what psi should it be set to and do I need to thin it out?
I do small job cornhole boards and flags what size of sprayer should I be looking for I use polyurethane material mainly water base a little oil based.
Johnson Scott Martinez Thomas Miller Michael
Wrong filter! you're wearing a dust filter instead of a chemical filter
Why when I look at HVLP sprayers they all say NOT FOR LATEX PAINT?
Harris Kenneth Robinson Susan Clark Patricia
I’m spraying water based poly and feel like it needs to be thinned. It coats the material but sort of in larger droplets than I expected. Does anybody thin their water based clear coats? Just use water to thin? Thanks!
Jonathan Katz-Moses
Thin with water. Also sounds like your setting may be wrong. Maybe too much fluid
Jonathan Katz-Moses yep, I added a bit of water to my mix this morning and it went on much better! Thanks!
can you interchange nozzles size between hvlp/lvlp in gun the same brand ?
Young Laura Davis Paul Jackson Jennifer
Jonathon..... can you really delve into compressor talk.
You deserve a RUclips award for best video on how to paint with HvLP gun. Thank you for this. Super informative. To the point. No nonsense. Great job. Thank you again. Couldn’t ask for more. I’ve never left a comment like this b4 but you deserve these words and much more
I didn’t know you can get mini water filters! 🤔😳👍🏻
Just got into spraying, this video is perfect. Thanks guys 👍🏻
so..... is the Aeropro the same as TCP Global? I really only want to buy a HVLP gun kit once.. thanks! Great vid.
Not sure
What do you Recomend? A turbine sprayer or spray using a compressor
Great video! Thanks for posting. For myself this is very timely as I’m within a week of completing a standing desk that I intend to spray finish. Quick question, any recommendations on the air compressor? Thanks again!
I linked the one I use in the pinned comment
Jonathan, I've watched this video now several times, very informative and great content! One question, currently I'm building a dresser with seven drawers and was curious to know if you prefer spraying the lacquer on the long pieces of the drawers (edges half-rounded) prior to cutting, gluing and assembly or after the drawers are assembled? It seemed to me spraying first has less chance of marking up the raw wood and the joints will still have unfinished wood for the glue to hold. Thanks!
Miller Lisa Wilson Linda Harris Thomas
Nice. Thanks for sharing man. 👍🏼
those water / oil separator filters are not enough for water, for automotive they just attach a leas hose about 8 inch or so and put a plastic ball water filter right at the bottom of the spray gun, inside those plastic filters are many layers of absorbent material, it almost looks like layers of cotton or something, it's $4 per filter, harbor freight has them. I learned the hard way after trying to figure out why I still had water coming ou of my spray even though I had 3 filters after the compressor. also your compressor looks like it's a tiny 8 gallon one, that's kinda small, 21 gallons would be better. and also you can make an aftercooler for the compressor using copper tubing lines at the hardware store and using a flaring crimping tool and random tubing joints
Thanks for another great video👍 I was looking for a quick rundown on an HVLP sprayer and whose video was #2 in the queue.....the 60 second tour was perfect, just wanted to see if there were any subtle nuances I needed to know. Thanks for all the work you put into the videos, your love of the craft is apparent!
3:12 I always take a drink out of my hvlp cup also.
Do you still recommend this setup or a newer setup
Simply not a good paint spray gun...too many issues.
Hvlp spraying... Breaking bad style!
Thank you for this video we plan on painting the outside of our woodshed chicken coop. We purchased the aeropro 9 piece spray gun kit👍🏾💕💕💕👍🏾
You forgot to mention minimum compressor size.
Great video Jonathan Katz Moses, do you still do you still like the HVLP kit would you recommend it? Thank you.
How do we know how much to thin our finish? My dad is looking to get into this and wants me to do the research.
Check out the MSDS sheet
You forgot to talk about the compressor.
So you didn't thin the lacquer?
Everyone in these videos with HVLP always talk about starting at 10 or so PSI. Honestly... I have never seen an HVLP gun that will even begin to properly atomize paint until you hit 20 or more. At 10 PSI - even 18-20, the paint is going to come out like tiny pebbles. Is there just something I have been missing all these years? Are there people out there that can actually spray paint out of an HVLP correctly at 10PSI?
Really Good video. But, how about maintaining these guns? How do you clean these guns after each use? Thanks, Al
Can you spray epoxy resin with hvlp guns?
Probably once at least. But you better get your money's worth out of the gun in the first 45 minutes
Timely video, just started looking into upping my game with regard to hvlp . I use a cheap all in one unit from Aldi for spraying shellac and it works well but my wife would like a big bathroom unit made and some new kitchen doors which I would like to spray with probably 2 Part paint
Nice informative video, good work. I wonder if a LVLP gun would work. Guess I will give it a try. I like how you put on that paint suit and wore gloves, very safe and a good idea.
I thought HVLP implied using a turbine based air supply? So is the really HVLP?
Yes. Pressure is regulated at the gun
Jonathan Katz-Moses - Thanks. Showing how you clean the gun up after different finishes would be great. The clean up is what has scared me off spray guns. Also, how long can the gun sit before spraying again with different finishes?
HVLP can be either turbine powered or compressor powered. The guns used here are hvlp but work with a compressor. This is a cheaper option for anyone who has a good enough compressor.
This guns works also with turbine systems right?great video!
Not sure but I know the fitting is different so maybe if you change that out
3:10 hahahaha
Very timely video, thanks. Question, have you tried spraying a one coat exterior sealer like Cetol through this? I could not find a viscosity of the sealer product cutsheet. Any recomendations on sealer for outside furnature? Keep up the awesome vids.
Look up the MSDS sheet
Stay safer?? The respirator filters you are using are strictly for dust and offer minimum protection from solvent sprays. You might as well be sniffing glue. Otherwise good video. Thanks,
May need to give an HVLP a try. I've always used airless... yes, really. Hot lacquer, pneumatic stirring on a 55 gallon drum. Of course we would turn out a high volume of cabinet, church trim....
Not shaking the can of product really only applies if you are brushing it on. The strainer (filter) eliminates any bubbles. Even if they made it to the gun, they would be atomized. If they made it through the gun and the filter, they would pop in the air. If they didn't pop, that's a superbubble!
is that Sean from Foureyes??
This is an awesome video!!
And I was about to spend over $230 bucks for a black widow spray gun, lol!!
In a different video you recommend a mixture of 15-25% thinner. On this video, you used 50% thinner. What factors were considered to make the change?
Hey, nicely done. I'm curious, how did you get coverage inside of the small boxes without tipping the gun?
Thanks for such an in-depth overview on technique. I have a Fuji mini mite 4 and really enjoy using it #FujiSpray, amazing system. i am about to finish my garage cabinets and trying to hone my technique. Once again thanks for the video.
Hm, the item you've chosen (a bookcase or whatever it is with a bunch of cubbies), presents what seems to be a pretty significant spraying challenge. How do you spray the inside of all of those sections evenly? This is a glaring omission from the video.
Do you have a preferred go-to finish you like to use when spraying your finishes on?
Love your videos btw man. Been watching and subscribed a long time!
If I bought the spray gun kit on amazon would a pancake air compressor work well with them?
Am I the only woodworker using a pressure tank to spray finish? All the same features, air, fluid, fan adjustment. The cost is a little more but it holds more material for bigger projects.
me. A professional finisher it's fun watching you guys suiting up.
I like the pop up shade roof you utilized nice idea.
Would you be able to spray paint through these HVLP sprayers ? Looking to paint a cabinet
Is the spray booth necessary when using that HVLP kit? Or just doing it outside would be enough?
Good demo I’m building a couple of coffee tables and I’ll finish them with an oil based finish wait a few weeks and spray the tops with lacker
Can you use with chalk paint? What kind of compressor setup is needed?
what type of pressure settings? Compressor output? spray gun regulator setting? thanks Jeff
I've only used a sprayer a couple of times, but a couple of things I noticed. First don't spray it in the garage. Everything gets coated in a fine dust. Second, don't use it for finishes such as stain that need to penetrate the wood.
Do you thin down the water-based poly with additional water before spraying?
Hey Jonathan. How those guns relates to the electric ones? You can also make the same adjustments?
About the tip size, you can adjust to deliver small amounts of material even with a tip like 2.6mm?
Try thread lock instead of PTFE tape and you’ll never use the tape again 😉
Love the old Chevy Pickup in the background!!!
Thanks for taking the mystery out of it. Never done it before, so doesn't look as daunting now.
Can you use it for painting walls or is there another gun with nozzle you can recommend.
So is the only thing that I need between my compressor in my gun is a dryer/water separator?
What compressor were you using here? The one in the video looks like my HF 8 gallon.
Please could you help me how many layers of lacquer can I spray the maximum amount sometimes I have seen they have a really beautiful glass type of finish on top so please could you tell me how many layers is maximum
so as far as the compressor that you link to in your description do you ever have issues when you're spraying something larger that you have to wait for the compressor to catch up to have pressure in your gun?
