    Got a Q5 and the PPS 2.0 recently and this video is pretty indispensable. Takes any of the confusion out of the cleaning process, for sure. Also just ordered a pressure pot for a larger spray coming up, and I dread having to move away from the PPS for that job. Haha. Thanks again for the video. 🎯

      @@SimpleWoodShop I have a small one man shop where I make one of a kind custom furniture. I’ve struggled with finishing for more years than I can count. When I built my new shop, I bought a decent airless sprayer for painting which works great for that, but not practical for finite finishing. I’ve tried almost every option for HVLP with my compressor, low end systems, and finally decided to put all that behind me with a self contained high end HVLP system I’m in the middle of a very large and expensive dining room table build and decided a new sprayer would be my reinvestment. Thanks brother. Just got the Q4 Platinum with the T-70 gun. This video really helped.
    Question though: I sprayed oil based poly so I used mineral spirits to clean everything up. After cleaning, I wiped everything dry with blue shop towels and reassembled. I didn't need to wipe everything down with water did I? The trace amounts of mineral spirits on all parts and pieces should be fine right?

    • @SimpleWoodShop
      @SimpleWoodShop  3 года назад

      Adam, Most of the issues with HVLP are due to cleaning the gun. If you disassembled that gun and gave it a good cleaning with mineral spirits it should be fine. It never hurts to run water through as a last step. The mineral spirits will evaporate pretty quickly so you should be good to go. Thank for watching. If you haven't I'd appreciate if you subscribed.

    • @SimpleWoodShop
      @SimpleWoodShop  3 года назад +1

      Hey. I’ve done it both ways. Left stuff in for weeks and cleaned right after. Either is good. If you switch materials you are spraying then clean well. So the previous material doesn’t contaminate the new stuff you’re spraying.
      On my spraygun it’s all stainless steel inside so it’s easy to clean on some other models the internal parts may be a little hard to clean because they’re made a little cheaper.

    Hi Matt. Does that rubber gasket wear out? It looks very fragile. If you put it in solution it might crack and break. Also that clear plastic air tube looks fragile as well. The Fuji gun has a lot of parts to replace. Ugh! Thoughts?

    • @SimpleWoodShop
      @SimpleWoodShop  3 года назад +2

      The gasket on mie has not work out, however I do have a replacement on hand. I've had the system for a couple years and that is the original. The clear plastic tubing will need to be replaced occasionally. This often happens when you fill your solution cup too high and then tip the container and the paint goes into the tube and dries. This is one of the reasons I swapped over to the 3m PPS 2.0 system. I've had my system for a couple years and have only replaced the air tube. Not too bad.

    Great video! What are your thoughts on using the same spray gun with the 3M PPS 2.0 for both water-based/borne and oil-based clear coatings? There seems to be a preponderance of opinions favoring separate spray guns for oil-based and water-based. Given that the total exposure of the spray gun to the clear coat is significantly reduced with the PPS set-up, I’m thinking that, so long as you’re thorough with your cleanings you might be able to use the same gun for both. Your thoughts/experiences?

    • @SimpleWoodShop
      @SimpleWoodShop  Год назад +1

      I'm sure the sprayer can do just fine swapping back and forth. I on the other hand have 7 drill and 10- router all with different bits, so i would probably buy a 2nd gun for that. But I only spray water based stuff.

    Matt, Terrific Job! Thank You. In the video you said you were spraying 2K Poly. My question is what tip is best to prevent running using the PPS 2.0 Pressure Cup? I will be spraying Renner 643 2k (White Tinted) primer and Renner 851(White Tinted) 2k topcoat. I want to prevent running and/or orange peel ; and I have read other folks like yourself using a 1.5 or some even using a 1.3. The Renner Chart suggests 1.8 air cap, but I have not really read that anyone is using a 1.8. Can you Share your own personal insight with 2K poly (If you have not used the Renner products specifically.) and when using the PPS 2.0 pressure cup. My project is a kitchen cabinet refinish. I also use a Fuji Q5 HVLP. Also, did you need to thin your 2K poly when using the Fuji and the PPS system Many Thanks and keep up the good work!

      Hey Bill, I don't have experience with that product. There is a little device to measure the viscosity of materials and then cross reference that to the aircap. You pour the paint into the cup and measure the time it takes to drain, then correlate that with the guide. Best I have for you.

If I’m in a range of colors (say going from blue to black), I can just make sure the filter and canister are clean and run water thru the gun until it comes out clean. Then start the new color. Seeing your video assured me I did it well. I Loved your demo of the 3m system, I was thinking about getting it for inverted spraying, but I was impressed at how much cleaning it saves also, so definitely going to get it.. I do have couple questions. I used Benjamin Moore advance waterbourne alkyd and used only water to clean up right after. I filled the cup with fresh water a couple times to run through, DO you think that is needed with the 3m system? you didnt seem to do that. Also BM Advance info says to rinse with mineral spirits after spraying and water clean up to protect parts, do you do that? or do you always just use brush cleaner for water bourne and that takes care of it.

For the gun I usually will take it apart and run water through all the pieces or whatever is suggested for the material. I'd rather have a spray gun that is cleaned in storage than a dirty one. I don't have experience with BM Advance but to be safe I would follow what they recommend.

    Is there any devise attachment that after removing the cup, one could connect to the PPS adapter on gun to be able to run cleaning solution through the head. Instead of using another insert each time. On conventional sprayers when doing production spraying I would dump the remaining paint, rinse the cup and part fill with thinner, reattach and run it through the gun. This cuts down on needing to disassemble and clean after every spray run. Perhaps a flex pipe attached to a header tank full of paint Thinner on a shelf, a shut off valve, and the PPS connector found on the cups. Thus after spraying, pull the paint cup and attach the thinner line, open valve, and spray until head is spraying clear. Nice Video Cheers

      @SimpleWoodShop  3 года назад +2

      Hey, Thanks for watching, I am not aware of any adapter for what you are speaking of. If you did want a quick way just use another cup and fill it up. On the original PPS 2.0 system it comes with a cup you could cut the bottom out of it and use it for that purpose only. However if you are changing colors it would be very important to make sure the previous color is all gone prior to spraying so you don't cross contaminate the two.

      Hi Chris, This depends on a couple of factors. If you are spraying in customers homes and you want to be considerate of the noise than the q series would be the way to go. They will also give you enough power to spray most anything. However if the noise is not a real factor then the Mini Mite Platinum 5 would be good. It has the same power as the top line model but not the extra stuff to keep it quiet. If you plan to spray inside the boxes then a pressure pot might be a good option so you can fit the sprayer in tighter spaces.

      Hey, You are going to enjoy the system, its really great. If you are going to spray that close together you can leave the solution in the cups. It is pretty airtight. The solution will dry at the very tip of the gun and you can just scrape that off and start spraying. When I use the 3M PPS 2.0 system cups I have left the paint in the cup for about a week and sprayed it no problem. I have another video on that setup.
      Give it a good wash at the end of the day and you will be fine. Even if you get dried material in the gun it easily cleaned, just some solution and scrubbing.

I don't typically spray a cup of water/solvent through it. When you take it apart and clean the inside and pieces you get to the parts that have to be cleaned. The area where the paint is inside the gun is very small and with the brushes it's easy to get to once you open it up.

    Do you ever oil the gun? if so how often?

      Hey Bill, Thanks for watching. Yes you should oil. I didn't in the video because I just forgot. On these guns it only takes a drop of oil on the tip of the needle before you insert it and then a little just behind the top of the handle where the needle passes through. I do it every time I clean the sprayer after use. Do you use the FUji System?

      Anything that moves. When you pull the handle the needle moves back and forth. Oil that area.
