Basically every single character is comic relief in the film though. I can't take a one of them seriously. Even Judi Dench beclowns herself as Old Doot when she sticks her leg up in the air and then Idris Elba saying "Macavityyyyy" as he vanishes deflates his threatening tone as the villain. But then the subject matter of a bunch of singing cats is just comic by nature so it's nearly impossible to portray them in a truly serious way. Grizabella comes the closest, but then the movie had to way over-do the Memories song while botching it at the same time...but then there's also the fact that the constant CGI and green screen ruin everything at every moment... There is exactly one infinity number of problems with that movie and every character being comic relief is somewhere in the bottom 25% of them 😆 To your point though, Bustopher Jones and Jennyanydots are hammed up just a bit more, just cranked the dial to 11 on them. So yeah.....it's just bad 😂😥😭
@@Sfadishwell it is based on the original cast from 1982 I believe. But that version only lasted like a year and the modern version fits way better. Though at least in the 1982 version their actually singing instead of just speaking the lyrics like in the 2019 version.

Bullshit. The film was great. Do you honestly believe that if the technology the film had was available in the 80's that the producers would have preferred bad wigs and legwarmers to actually having the performers look more like real cats like they did in the movie? They did the best they could with what they had at the time. Trust that the film version is more in line with the original vision of what the original producers had in mind.

There’s a lot of comments on who is better, mungojerry or rumpleteaer. but honestly I’ve watched third twenty times and these guys work so well personality wise and synchronized that if you took either one out it just wouldn’t be the same. It’s the chemistry of both that makes this performance stand out so well. I don’t know why we got to compare everyone. They both did a great job.

I prefer this version over any version (I wish the rest was uncut though). The actors seem like they enjoy their parts and the choreography is awesome. I'm actually playing Rumpleteazer in my schools rendition and it's so much fun!

In the movie it feels like they committed something really bad like murder or something like that they dont really give off that playfull in it for fun attitude I definitely prefer the original musical for mungojerrie and rumpleteazer :3

This hurts. This absolutely hurts. So sad to see this musical get botched by another one of Hollywood's sad attempts to cash in on what's popular for money. After the movie dropped it seems like the musical it's getting the brunt of the hate and criticism than the movie itself. And that's sad because I was a huge fan of this musical when I was young. For my 19th birthday, my mother took me out to see it live. Never seen or felt so much positivity and good vibes in one theatre. It was just people getting out of there seats to sing, clap, dance, and even giggle a few times. Now instead of singing and clapping, all we will hear is silence mixed with "Is this a cult?" comments. I guess this is what they meant when they say nothing lasts forever.😥
It really crushed me that the movie brought so much hate on the musical. The musical IS NOT bad. It's just not for everyone. The number of people rushing in to call the musical trash because the movie was crushed me. If you haven't seen the musical, LEAVE IT ALONE.

Everyone is saying Rumpleteazer is their favourite and that she is the cutest. Yes, she is the cutest, but Mungojerrie is my favourite. I still continuously listen to this song and most of the other Cats songs on repeat.
Having just seen the new version of this song in the new movie I have only one thing I can say. "It was Mungo jerrie and Rumpelteazer......and they REALLY should have left it at that!"
Gotta love how all of them are like some cat or other in real life in some way. These two are the crazy, mischievous youngins that steal your food, break stuff, make messes, and yet they’re adorable. Oh and they work together to get all of it done. Bustopher Jones is the cat that’s pampered beyond reason and has rich humans. Macavity is basically just your average misbehaving cat that you can’t seem to tame or train in any way and you don’t even know how he got that way. Pouncival is another mischievous young kitten who doesn’t really know how to behave yet and has way too much energy. Victoria is the young female going into heat for the first time. Basically, all the kittens in the show are like kittens in real life. Rum Tum Tugger is that finicky cat that only wants what he’s not given, basically. Jennyanydots is the one most in tune with her crepuscular nature, and also the weirdo cat that doesn’t seem to want to actually chase anything so much as want to “talk” to typical prey animals. Mr. Mistoffelees is that cat that hides stuff and seemingly disappears every now and again, and you would swear he had some sort of magic powers because you honestly don’t understand how he does what he does. Skimbleshanks is a cat that once lived at a train station and thought he ran the place (and still thinks he did). Grizzabella is a cat that was pampered and beautiful in her youth but then rejected when she got old and now she’s just wanting literally anybody to care about her one last time before she dies (poor thing). Basically, all of them are like cats.
It just clicked in my head that most objects in the play are scaled to the appropriate size compared to the cats but the pearls Rumpelteazer's wearing fit her. Following the implication they're stolen, that means someone in the household had a cat-sized pearl necklace.
@@elixershorts or maybe their owners made the necklace specially for her? The other reason I can think of is that the pearls belong to a child, because in wealthier families, some kids wear mini versions of their parents' jewellery.
I love how the lyrics paint a picture of a couple of regular real life mischievous and active cats, ones I can instantly imagine in real life zooming around the house, and the stage performance elevates that to what the cats think themselves as, which is these pair of criminals. It is so incredibly cute and something I see in all of the performances - Mr Mistoffelees is the cat that just turns up quietly behind you but in his mind, in the cat world, he's a great magician, and Rum Tum Tugger is the fussy one meowing at the door who in his mind is a rebel rock star too cool for school. I can see these characters of the poems in my own cats and I fully believe that the performers are actually cats from their movements. Bravo

May I just say, that after watching this so many times, you start to notice smaller details, like for example Mungo's facial expression at 2:14 which adds a fine addition to the immersion and I love it.
It always scares me when dancers do that duo cartwheel thing. Like, just imagine two people dressed as cats cartwheeling violently at you as you run in terror
I played Rumpleteazer in my High School's production of Cats and they made Mungojerrie be played by a girl too because I couldn't do the double cartwheel in the end with the original Mungojerrie. And then when at one of the show days, my partner and I fell hard doing the double cartwheel. It's not as easy as people think lol
this dancing is incredible and acrobatics, damn these guys are world class athletes, its so accurate, acting is so clean, this is absolutely an incredible show
Best thing ever would be an uncut version of the DVD. Would love to have the full version of this. I know some of their song was cut, and all of growltigers last stand, and I know Misto's actual conjuring turn was missing too.... and a lot more. I only realized how much of Mungo and Teazer's song was cut after seeing the bit in the behind the scenes clip. The fact it made it into that means it definitely exists, so why not release an extended edition?
This play is a must see, the DVD isn't too worth it as the sight of seeing it live is truly AMZING and outstanding. You would truly love it and never forget what happens.
Unfortunately, it rarely does tours of the US now. I don' think I've seen it in the Seattle area for nearly 10 years. and on top of that, I'm completely uninterested in the new 'updated' Tugger.
This is actually a really fun musical. Whacky but fun. This song is one of my favorites. The choreography is awesome. This was such a great performance, too. They all are.

This hurts. This absolutely hurts. So sad to see this musical get botched by another one of Hollywood's sad attempts to cash in on what's popular for money. After the movie dropped it seems like the musical it's getting the brunt of the hate and criticism than the movie itself. And that's sad because I was a huge fan of this musical when I was young. For my 19th birthday, my mother took me out to see it live. Never seen or felt so much positivity and good vibes in one theatre. It was just people getting out of there seats to sing, clap, dance, and even giggle a few times. Now instead of singing and clapping, all we will hear is silence mixed with "Is this a cult?" comments. I guess this is what they meant when they say nothing lasts forever.😥
It really crushed me that the movie brought so much hate on the musical. The musical IS NOT bad. It's just not for everyone. The number of people rushing in to call the musical trash because the movie was crushed me. If you haven't seen the musical, LEAVE IT ALONE.
I first saw a video comparing the music of these two, then there were more and finally I landed here. And I must say, I actually like the musical! So not everything was bad! Though it's a shame that it got more of a bad reputation because of the movie

Gotta love how all of them are like some cat or other in real life in some way. These two are the crazy, mischievous youngins that steal your food, break stuff, make messes, and yet they’re adorable. Oh and they work together to get all of it done. Bustopher Jones is the cat that’s pampered beyond reason and has rich humans. Macavity is basically just your average misbehaving cat that you can’t seem to tame or train in any way and you don’t even know how he got that way. Pouncival is another mischievous young kitten who doesn’t really know how to behave yet and has way too much energy. Victoria is the young female going into heat for the first time. Basically, all the kittens in the show are like kittens in real life. Rum Tum Tugger is that finicky cat that only wants what he’s not given, basically. Jennyanydots is the one most in tune with her crepuscular nature, and also the weirdo cat that doesn’t seem to want to actually chase anything so much as want to “talk” to typical prey animals. Mr. Mistoffelees is that cat that hides stuff and seemingly disappears every now and again, and you would swear he had some sort of magic powers because you honestly don’t understand how he does what he does. Skimbleshanks is a cat that once lived at a train station and thought he ran the place (and still thinks he did). Grizzabella is a cat that was pampered and beautiful in her youth but then rejected when she got old and now she’s just wanting literally anybody to care about her one last time before she dies (poor thing). Basically, all of them are like cats.

I love how the lyrics paint a picture of a couple of regular real life mischievous and active cats, ones I can instantly imagine in real life zooming around the house, and the stage performance elevates that to what the cats think themselves as, which is these pair of criminals. It is so incredibly cute and something I see in all of the performances - Mr Mistoffelees is the cat that just turns up quietly behind you but in his mind, in the cat world, he's a great magician, and Rum Tum Tugger is the fussy one meowing at the door who in his mind is a rebel rock star too cool for school. I can see these characters of the poems in my own cats and I fully believe that the performers are actually cats from their movements. Bravo

And then when at one of the show days, my partner and I fell hard doing the double cartwheel. It's not as easy as people think lol

Best thing ever would be an uncut version of the DVD. Would love to have the full version of this. I know some of their song was cut, and all of growltigers last stand, and I know Misto's actual conjuring turn was missing too.... and a lot more. I only realized how much of Mungo and Teazer's song was cut after seeing the bit in the behind the scenes clip. The fact it made it into that means it definitely exists, so why not release an extended edition?
Let's just hope they don't try and release some new version with rapping Tugger... :/
This play is a must see, the DVD isn't too worth it as the sight of seeing it live is truly AMZING and outstanding. You would truly love it and never forget what happens.
Unfortunately, it rarely does tours of the US now. I don' think I've seen it in the Seattle area for nearly 10 years. and on top of that, I'm completely uninterested in the new 'updated' Tugger.
They never got to film Growltiger's Last Stand because Sir John Mills took too long to film his scene. And they only had 19 days to film the show.
