One of the reasons the play worked and the movie didn't: The Cats musical wasn't trying to make the characters look like cats. They wanted to give them cat-like features. The wigs/fur on the head, the makeup, the full body suits with occasional feathering to resemble fur, a string belt with a yarn tail, etc. The movie failed to this. They simply changed the color, added fur, ears, and a tail and changed absolutely nothing else. The musical knew it was pretty impossible to sing, dance, and act on a stage while looking exactly like cats, so they didn't. THATS why the musical worked in the first place. Obviously, having those costumes in a movie wouldn't work either though. So why this musical was made into a musical is beyond me
One reason the movie slips hard into uncanny valley is that they CGIed out their human ears but left their noses and eyes completely human. Their “cat” ears are also positioned incorrectly, if you look at a real cat’s ears they start halfway down its head. This makes their head look proportioned completely wrong, too tall and thin too to be natural. They also didn’t add enough fur to keep them from looking like naked humans. This is the worst on Rebel Wilson since she has her creepy skin suit, but pretty much every cat not “wearing clothes” looks naked. The worst is Macavity since they actually made him skin colored *and* he was clothed before.
100% This movie was made or conceived by a furry. Now I would never cast shade on anyone's kink but this was just a bit much for the masses. It would have done an order of magnitude better if they had just done what the play has done for years. This CGI just comes off as strange and a waste.
When you say Cats the broadway musical was made to look like the characters were playing cats. Are you referring to Brecht's technique in theatre? Because that I totally understand
they definitely needed at least a year more and maybe even more than that if the accusations that cgi animators were working until basically the day of the films release are true
This movie would have been better if T*m H**per was not allowed within 300ft of it, and the creative team encouraged input from people who actually understand musical theatre and Cats (the musical). And yeah, if you're going to use CGI this heavily make sure you have enough time and money to cover that, and give the animators everything they need to work with (like maybe some mocap data or visual references for lighting and movement???)
Remember when taylor said in one of her songs (i think you guys know what is) "i will be the actress staring in your bad dreams" well i think this is what she meant
I think calling it range would imply it was done well. She's a great pop artist, and this being terrible isn't really all her fault, but yikes the accent, the vocals. There's no texture or character. If anything it just makes me appreciate the original more. So. no. While she's very talented, she doesn't have much range.
I honestly think, when Idris Elba (who IS a good actor in most of his movies) was asked to play Macavity in this, he did his research and saw what Macavity looked like in the '98 version with the wild hair and scary face paint and crazy costume and he was like "HELL NO, I am not dressing up like THAT. Make my character the same color as my skin and give me green eyes and we'll call it a day". lol
Ikr. It should have been this amazing duet we had in the musical. You can see Demeter's struggle there and Bombalurina's still-going affection for Macavity. Also I hate how they drug everyone with catnip in this to make them dance along, while in the musical it was all the female kittens (or at least younger cats) who joined them in their dance because they were swayed by Macavity's reputation and the mystery around him. It was so much more intriguing and made Macavity a more interesting but also more dangerous character. You could sense the attraction to evil in there, even though I couldn't have explained it as a child I knew it was there. Everyone was just so much more refined in the musical, despite it being "just" a presentation of cats who want to go to the heavyside lair.
in the original he appears before the song and takes old deuteronomy, and this is demeter and bombalurina explaining him to the audience. dont think tom watched the original though!
I really appreciate her throwing that ‘wide awake’ line the way she did, not so hot on how it begins but I think I just like the stage version more than Taylor’s.

As a theatre nerd who only read the play's Wikipedia page, i can honestly say that this play deserves the adaptation we got. It's a show where anthropomorphic cats join a contest in order to get permission to die. What else were we expecting?
@@ezelfrancisco1349 i know what you mean there is not much of a plot in this play, but you can't deny that the staged production of the musical is better than the film , i mean the dance sequences, the singing everything, but for many people the CGI destroyed the movie altogether. Also i wanna say that the large majority of the public wouldn't like the movie even without the CGI as you said there is not a lot happening in the play , and it left a lot of people confused , but us like theatre nerds appreciated even like that whereas people who didn't know about Cats prior to seeing the movie didn't have any appreciation for the musical itself, you know what i mean

I've listened to some Brits sing. Usually, though not always, they have no accent while signing. I was told some time back that vocalists are usually all taught to pronounce letters the same way, maybe that's why the accent sounds forced here?
@@phoenix.maximus the song was a half singing & half talking anyway. Whoever sing this makes them sound like that. And you forget that its a theatrical song and mostly theatrical songs are half talking & singing imao. You should learn. 😌
To be honest, I like Taylor’s voice fine, the set up of the cats being drugged/controlled is kinda creative, I like Idris joining the song, but the animation ruins a lot of the choreography
Everyone's talking about how they described Idris Elba as a tall, slim ginger, and I'm just wondering how no one noticed Tay Tay's attempt at a posh London accent.
Of course, the whole point of the song in the musical is that Bombalurina (Taylor Swift's character in the film) fears and hates Macavity even though she might still be attracted to him. It's never explicitly stated in words, but the way in which Bombalurina in the musical closely resembles another character named Demeter and seems quite protective of her strongly implies that the two are most likely siblings. Demeter is often nervous and she's terrified of Macavity -- she's the first to know when he's there and tends to attribute anything unexpected to him, implying that they were acquainted in the past.
Absolutely! Besides, Demeter is the cat who knows everything about everybody. She's the only one who recognises Grizabella. Telling everyone about legendary cats is HER thing.
I love it actually! I think the production was overlooked. People get weirded out by the visual of the film. This scene was theatrical and entertaining actually. It's not all that horrible.
@@persephone8960 we have to agree to disagree on that one. It's a shame to have so many Good actors and then such a horrible script. I Guess you have to really really Love the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber (I do not) and weird looking human Cats to appriciate it.

Tom Hooper is the real reason why a lot of this movie is bad. He didn't give them direction and instead had them sing the songs how they wanted. @@spaorkles I actually love Taylor, she's one of the best performers and is carrying this whole scene, but that makes me more annoyed since the character she's playing should have a main singing part in 3 or 4 more songs and be in the movie throughout... but for some reason they decided she could only sing this one song and thats that
I DO love how Mistoffelees, Munkustrap AND Cassandra all try to protect Victoria and get her away.....but NOBODY thinks to protect Lady Deuteronomy when Bombalurina is CLEARLY singing about Macavity. lol
@@laysmaxx5789 Because they are male cats and Victoria is beautiful and young and alone, so they are instantly attracted to her. That's why they made Victoria the main character in this version and not Grizabella, who is older and not so pretty and has a rough backstory. They didn't interpret the story's secret correctly at all and because they made it Victoria's story, it ruined Grizabella's journey.
@@CeltycSparrow In the stage play, whenever there's a threat the older cats always protected Deutronomy and the kittens. It showed how closely knit they are as a family. But in this movie, it seems like Victoria is the only one who matters. And not just Grizzabella, but they diminished the roles of some others like Jemima, Mistoffelees and Tugger.
Me knowing This song is supposed to be about Bombalurina and Demeter being genuinely afraid of Macavity because he keeps trying to ‘Date’ Demeter as well as many other reasons: *oh. I’m confused.*
I am actually OK with the Taylor singing the song. What drives me nuts is the scene where her claws come out and it makes that *shing* sound. Its like the effects guy dropped some of the frames where she says "like" trying to insert the claws special effect. Kinda crappy editing IMO.

The original musical is way better
I feel like this movie could’ve been better if they just had it in production for a year longer to make sure everything is perfect and not terrifying
they definitely needed at least a year more and maybe even more than that if the accusations that cgi animators were working until basically the day of the films release are true
Yup, the movie seems like the rehearsal
This movie would have been better if T*m H**per was not allowed within 300ft of it, and the creative team encouraged input from people who actually understand musical theatre and Cats (the musical). And yeah, if you're going to use CGI this heavily make sure you have enough time and money to cover that, and give the animators everything they need to work with (like maybe some mocap data or visual references for lighting and movement???)
I wish they hired Adam Lambert for Rum Tum Tugger
this movie would have been better if it was never released

Cant believe this maam went from this and wrote folklore and evermore. Her range is unparalleled
I think calling it range would imply it was done well. She's a great pop artist, and this being terrible isn't really all her fault, but yikes the accent, the vocals. There's no texture or character. Taylor is living her dream of becoming a cat. Movie quality aside, I'm genuinely happy for her 😂
1:29 "macavity's a ginger cat"
4:11 macavity's a brown cat
I honestly think, when Idris Elba (who IS a good actor in most of his movies) was asked to play Macavity in this, he did his research and saw what Macavity looked like in the '98 version with the wild hair and scary face paint and crazy costume and he was like "HELL NO, I am not dressing up like THAT. Make my character the same color as my skin and give me green eyes and we'll call it a day". lol

Idk, it doesn't really sound that bad to me. Maybe a few parts she screwed up but it sounds ok to me.
Oh no! That emoji! It's contagious!
Macavity actually appearing goes against the whole story, right? This whole song is about how he's this urban legend, a total mystery cat.
Actually he appears in the original too,
He appears in the stage show too, but not for long and he doesn't have his own lines or lyrics. He is still ambiguous in the show regardless.
I really appreciate her throwing that ‘wide awake’ line the way she did, not so hot on how it begins but I think I just like the stage version more than Taylor’s.
I think Taylor Swift did ok but i still prefer it as a duet sung by Bombalurina and demeter.
Amelie Carpenter She is my favourite person in the word! But I think it’s cuz she is an American using a British accent
It would've been great if they could've cast another popular singer as Demeter instead of making her a minor character.

Have you seen this movie's version of gumbie cat?
I love Taylor but the theater kid in me is disappointed by this whole scene and movie

Same here!
I think she did a good job with it though it obviously it doesnt fit her because she does sing with a very pronounced American accent

Everyone's talking about how they described Idris Elba as a tall, slim ginger, and I'm just wondering how no one noticed Tay Tay's attempt at a posh London accent.
Bombalurina: “Macavity’s not there” Macavity: *is there*
Of course, the whole point of the song in the musical is that Bombalurina (Taylor Swift's character in the film) fears and hates Macavity even though she might still be attracted to him.

That's why they made Victoria the main character in this version and not Grizabella, who is older and not so pretty and has a rough backstory.
