Imagine turning Bombalurina into an antagonist, sacrificing Demeter, and turning the song into a solo, just to get Taylor Swift to be a cat for a few minutes. The duet between Bombalurina and Demeter is exactly what makes this song so great. But no, Tom Hooper didn't think so.
Tom Hooper wanted Taylor Swift getting lowered from the ceiling while she's drugging all the other cats.
Tom Hooper also thought "I know that the song describes in detail what Macavity looks like, but never mind that. Get me Idris Elba and make him look naked. Also, you know the part where it says "Macavity's not there"? Yeah, just forget about that line completely. Let's make it so Macavity actually IS there. ALL the fucking time! Remove the 'mystery' from the Mystery Cat, and give him lines. Lots of lines."
What's funny about the duet between Demeter and Bombalurina as well is that they describe Macavity differently. Demeter who, in this version, has just escaped from his abusive possession, is more frightful of him than anything, she thinks he is the evilest of all evils. While Bombalurina, while not hiding her attraction to him, sneaks in a few snarky remarks to make Macavity seem more like a troublesome cat rather than a mastermind of all evil. Even the words they use show subtle difference, like Demeter calls him "the bafflement of Scotland Yard" but Bombalurina calls him "a fiend in feline shape." When Hooper cuts Demeter out and have Taylor Swift handle the entire song, he's neglecting this dynamic and the humorous intent of the poem and the song. Macavity isn't some lord of the crime scene, he's a cat that likes to break things and steal things.
Hooper also butchered The Old Gumbie Cat and Bustopher Jones. But Mr. Mistofeles' number suffered the worst. I think only Rum Tum Tugger and Skimbleshanks got the really good ones.
@@freddogrosso9835 I'm sorry, for me Rum Tum Tugger was butchered as well. He went from a flirt and play rock star to a generic pop creep. I could forgive the way they changed the lines (the bore one and the beast one) as other versions have changed too, but while in the 1998's version I laugh and enjoy, there's 1 (one, exactly one, that's frightful) moment where I am slightly amused, and it's not even from the musical performance (it's the time when he looks at himself in the mirror). Jason has a great voice, but unlike Skimble, the movie degraded this son as well. It's not awful or disrespectful as Jenny's or Bustopher's, and not downright ruined as Macavity, Mistoffelees and so many other songs, but it's really bad as well.

Tom Hooper undestood Cats less than I with 5 years and not understanding english (I thought Jemima and Demeter were the same character and that Rumpus Cat was the bad guy)
They give off older and younger sister vibes, and the song is genius. Demeter having trauma from Macavity but still being like ”yeah but he still was kinda hot” and Bomba always being horny and describing him only with the way he looks, demeter telling us how horrible he is but at the end they both cant deny the fact hes probably pretty hot
And then he finally shows up, looking like a child's sleep paralysis demon on coke lol
Sometimes you worry about the subtext of the song and characters feelings, but then you remember - Hal, they're just cats. And they all bang.
I like to think that in an universe where this cats are just cats, the part of 'he's broken every human law', it doesn't means he broke all the laws we as humans respect, he just broke all the laws imposed by their humans, like not breaking fragile things, steal food and that sort of mischievous things

I think thats kinda the point. They are cats, they only really know cat things. You can kinda see it in Skimbleshanks. Dude says hes basically running the whole train but it kinda sounds like he just belongs to the stationmasters daughter and so the train can't go cause she'd be really upset if they just left her cat far away from home.
I like that. It's not "human law" as in "laws for humans" (don't kill, steal, etc), it's "laws BY humans". The laws humans give their cats.

I will always adore how Demeter and Bombalurina's voices are different (with Demeter's being soft and smooth and loud while her sister's goes from loud to soft to loud again) but both are so synced and blend together. Both can't be more beautiful than the other, they're a package.

Some actors do consider Munk, Tugger, and Mac to be siblings but their words are far from canon, because anything could be canon! (Personally I think Munk, Tugger, & George are all siblings... dunno what Mac is but I like the interpretation of Bomba being his sister...)

This musical was one I watched obsessively when I was a kid. I followed nothing, I never learned a character's name, I couldn't figure out a main character, I just knew that it was a fun musical with beautiful dances and songs. Now, as an adult, I just wanna enjoy it again.

In the 2019 version, they made Veronica the protagonist and they just took Bustopher Jones and The Gumbie Cat and just was like 'These cats are overweight! We needed comic relief anyway.' And boy, I could go on for hours about how Taylor Swift did this song.

I remember the booklet from the musical claiming the cats had alternate names when they weren’t in full kit like when they were spotlight characters and when they were background dancers.
The original song lyrics I have seen they do mention Rumoleteazer but for some reason the 98 movie doesn’t.

I kinda feel really bad for Demeter, honestly. Like, the acting makes it so like she was in a really toxic if not abusive relationship with Macavity, but has the tendency to go back for the D. Bombalurina knows how bad he is, but is more focused on the D. I also like to think Bombalurina's line "I know. He cheats... at cards" meant that he probably cheated on Demeter with Bombalurina, but the latter warned the former about the infidelity becaus she recognizes he's really not good for Demeter. and Demeter is grateful towards Bombalurina for waking her up from that relationship which is why they're so close with each other.

Also at 3:12, I see Demeter’s reaction to Bomby’s description of him sort of like a triggered flashback of such. She’s reliving it through the description of Macavity’s movements. Probably why Demeter was my favorite growing up. I relate to her.

Originally, before the dark ages of Greece, it is believed that Persephone and Demeter were both deities of the underworld along with Poseidon, with hades being absent until roughly the times of the odyssey. So I guess she was in hell at one point before “escaping.” I read way to far into it

The thing about cheating in cards is that it really was an actual offense that *duels* were fought over it.
Not to be that person but the lyric is “he’s outwardly respectable” which fits with that cheating at cards bit, as well as the overall theme of him being this mastermind that’s never at the crime scene and leaves no evidence.
I remember playing as Bombalurina during our play at school and No one really expected anything, they didn't expect it to be me. Bc I am just a quiet kid. But as a fan of this Play eversince I was a kid, I've always wanted to play a cat and to be bombalurina is one of the challenging yet fun experience ever during my senior HS days.
I tried my best to give the role a justice and a lot of people told me I did, so I'm very proud of myself even until now.
Especially dancing and singing to this song is whole experience. I enjoyed every second of it. The 2 months of practicing and watching this play/movie for almost everyday is definitely worth it.
It made me love cats even more and now I have a lot of em😅🐱

Taylor Swift appeared for like 5 seconds halfway through the movie. And on top of that they made her sing the song alone. That version wasn't completely bad but it's no match for this.

Exert from my presentation on how badly they messed this up: This is the worst song. Its decently well sung, Taylor Swift and Idris Elba can sing, but it's just so mangled. The original song is sung by two cats Bombalurina and Demeter. They have experience with him and illustrate how evil he is. Adding to the mystery is that fact that we only see Macavity in that dark and that fact that he never speaks or sings, only laughs. This is the only cat they do not respect, and instead fear. They took one look at all of this and chucked it all out.
Now its sung mostly by Taylor Swift, whos character is working with Macavity. This facts makes Macavity seem less threatening, and more pathetic. During the second half, Macavity comes out and sings himself. Again, Idris Elba can definitely sing, but having him come out and sing about himself ruins a large part of the Mystery part of the Mystery cat. Furthermore most of the song is sung seductivly, instead of loud and big like it should be. This ruins even more of Macavity aura of fear, which by now is an aura of mild dislike. Furthermore, one of the lines is “Macavity’s a ginger cat” The movie elected to ignore this, and make him the coulor of Idris Elba’s skin coulor, effectively making him look naked. They also keep the line in, so the song is just flat wrong, which may have been ok if he was still a mystery, but the cat singing it works with him, so she just sounds dumb. This whole song was just done so wrong, its almost impressive.

@@pandasareawesome4813Elba was to blame for Macavity being black. He insisted his black face not be coloured red; it's some black thing. The graphics people coloured his body red, leaving the face black, but it looked silly. As Elba refused to have a red face, they were left with two options: sack the racist fucker or have his character entirely black. This is something for which Hooper can't be blamed.
I remember watching this musical in person as a little kid and having nightmares about macavity for weeks after. I’m revisiting this years later, and I still get chills, amazing performance.
They’ve got such fantastic voices and they really let them ring out like they need to~ I’m actually mad about Taylor Swift’s because she *just doesn’t have the voice for it*

I honestly can't pick. When I was 10, Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer was what made me love CATS. The high schoolers were able to do the double cartwheel.

Watching Mungojerrie in the beginning is interesting as he varies between looking after the other young ones and hiding and being scared himself

I was two when this was released. I loved watching thus when I was four. It felt so new back then. Hard to think this film version is 23 years now.

Quite a few years ago I stuck the dvd into my computer, pressed play and record on audacity and let the whole show run, recording the whole audio. I then spent the next couple hours after it was done cutting it down into individual songs. I even tweaked Growltiger’s Last Stand from the OBC soundtrack, I took the end of “Gus”, tweaked the pitch so he’d sound a little bit more like Gus in the movie, and then added the original end to “Gus” in the movie to the end of Growltiger, so I have a “complete” show soundtrack. So, these were the best singers I’d ever heard when I was 7 years old, before I ever saw the Little Mermaid. I remember watching the beginning and hearing everyone say how AMAZING Ariel’s voice was.

Macavity's Jealousy and Pride is what turned Macavity evil - when he was a part of the tribe and what caused him to be banished and exiled from the tribe . the difference between Grizabella and Macavity - is that Grizabella learned from her mistakes and repented of her sins . Macavity didn't and harbored and devised a plan to be chosen to go to the Heaviside Layer and that he wants revenge on the tribe for casting him out and for not choosing him to go to the Heaviside Layer - the reason why in the end after he confronts the tribe when he short circuits the lights - he does it to get away and to escape . not to kill himself - He was exchausted from the fight that he retreats to make a quick getaway
