When I listen to Paul I admire his machine-like performance. When I listen to Dave I smile because of the swing, taste and flair that no one else has. Jon Dette is somewhere in between. However, considering the level of skill needed to play this, I don't understand why drummers are treated like trash these days. You can't find people like Paul, Dave or Jon at every corner.
Drummers are a forgotten lot these days with drum machines and synthetic sounds. Hip hop wouldn't know what to do with them anyway. Best let these guys play for good decent hard rocking bands. When I started playing drums in 1969 everyone knew who the drummer was. Carmine Appice, Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Ian Paice, Carl Palmer et. all. Today no one knows except us who want to know or are in the know.
I don't understand the whole contest here all 3 great drummers but Dave is the guy who developed these drum tracks so your only copying why compare no need I can play slayer on guitar does that mean I'm as good as Jeff hannamen nope
It's not even a comparison. It's even worse watching these.drum cam videos then just being in the audience at a slayer show feeling the kick drum and how off time it is
Well Gene Hoglan is better. Which is why. Lombardo went to Dark Angel shows incognito and when he heard new Hoglan stuff that he could play by the way a lot of it he couldn't duplicate he would add it to the New Slayer songs as they just happen to get their albums out a couple months before dark angel did. fact of the matter is anyone who knows anything about drumming especially other drummers will tell you Lombardo cannot hold a candle to help one. Gene gives drum Clinics to some of the best drummers in the world. I will just in this by saying Gene it's legit an awesome human beingand I am honored to call him a friend whereas Lombardo is an immature little twat or at least he was 1986.
Ken B Saw Gene back in the day.He is a true orginal Legened .I will never know what "better" means .This post was only about who people like berween Bostaph who is a true real player and Lombardo in regards to Slayer No Lombardo No Slayer.Lombardo is irreplaceable in regards to Slayer.Stop jocking everbody's comments with your friendship to someone this post is not about.
Ken B You're a fucking troll. Everyone knows the only one on lombardos level is gene hoglan. But idk about live performances in their prime. Dave was unstoppable.
+Carter am alot of things. Troll isnt one of them. i just get sick of hearing things like true original next to daves name when i was there, i knnew them both and a lot of us saw the 'true original' jacking stuff Gene came up with. Gene is the true original and dave a cheap clone.
+Carter lol first a troll, now a fanboy? Actually youd be more accurate as in saying im someone who should drop something that happened between Dave and myself in 1986. And i should stop hating on him. Everything i said about he and gene and slayer and dark angel was accurate, but its time to move on lol
Bostaph and Dette are absolutely amazing. No doubt about that. Seriously incredible. But Lombardo is Lombardo. He's...so damn incredible, that he Always wins in a drum battle to me. I'm sorry to Lars lrich, because I'm the biggest fan of Metallica since they formed, but Lombardo is the drum god to me.
deeply sorry. no game. Dave Lombardo was, is, and ALWAYS WILL BE the drum player of slayer. maximum respect for other drummer but a confrontation us insulting..... for the others.
I have always been a loyal fan of Dave and his playing. He's my favorite drummer of all time in fact. His playing style is loose with a lot of swing, but super tight if you know what I mean. Paul Bostaph is a super tight drummer as well as John Dette. Dave is an almost effortless, more relaxed player, while Bostaph and especially Dette look like it's laborious. They're all super great players and do Slayer proud, but IMO it'll as always be Dave.
I love Dave as well. When he's playing, you never see him struggling to hit the drums or anything and he's always in time. Dette and Paul are also great. Dave for the win!
There is a unique thing about Dave that I can’t quantify. But I don’t feel anyone else is like him. Bostaph is a badass, and there’s a reason he’s played with several of true biggest thrash bands in the world. But playing slayer tunes. Bostaph looks like he’s giving max effort every second. Whereas Dave looks like he’s chilling with a beer and scratching his balls. It’s just effortless and smooth.
I like both, and look forward to seeing Bostaph in October, but yeah..even with the cruddy sound quality of these vids it is apparent that Lombardo is FUCKING INSANE.
@andres, are you blind??bostaph playing it like nothing no feeling at all like he was programmed to cover the war ensemble pathetic bostaph fan gay, everytime you ratdheads thinks paul is better than Dave, NOT EVEN CLOSE, NOT EVEN CLOSE
The biggest difference is Lombardo looks like he taking a stroll in the park while Paul looks like he's in a fight for his life to play that fast and Dette is struggling but managing fine. Dave just looks so much more natural and relaxed behind the kit while Paul is so stiff it's no wonder he has elbow problems.
Wow, first time I've seen these drum cam vids. Lombardo is brilliant and seamless....Mind you, these examples are his creations. It was the drum sound Lombardo brought to Slayer that really hooked me back then and I'm pretty sure that's why a lot of us (early fans) are so romantic about Slayer when Dave is at the helm. Incredible drummer. EDIT: 67,000 for approx 90 shows of packed stadiums? No wonder they lost Dave...Pitiful.
He sounds better because he’s using bass drum triggers. I saw slayer w Dave and Paul and wished they used bass drum triggers because the drums sounded like trash,

In my opinion Lombardo have the key to Slayer. He seems to fly around the drum set. Bostaph is great too, but there's no comparision in style of execution. Bostaph has been in a lot of practice to play like that, Lombardo just play a lot
Bostaph is good drummer no doubt. But, Lombardo wrote the Bible on thrash drumming. Listen to Reign, South, and Seasons back to back... that is all you need.
Dave always had that huge drum sound on every record, even if the rest of production was shit.... also he has more dynamics and more natural swing + he is more melodic in composing drum paterns than Paul... Paul is mostly just rolling from left to the right
I love Paul Bostaph’s approach on the band with things like, the album Divine Intervention and the song Gemini off of Undisputed Attitude. But that being said, Dave Lombardo won all of this sh*t on this video. Dave Lombardo is a musician who has gotten so much better as he’s gotten older. Grip Inc. ruled. Lombardo’s rhythms are insane and he has crazy power. Lombardo kills.
Jon played with Slayer in the 1990's after Dave left and Paul wasn't around. You can see Jon with Slayer on the first Ozzfest concert video.Jon was also Testaments touring drummer in the mid to late 90's as well.Jon is on Testament live at the Fillmore album from 1995
Dave’s technique and feeling are flawless. He seems to have some much fun and ease in his playing. No wonder he’s well respected among jazz drummers. Tight sounding, precise and musical. The best
....Lombardo is the only one playing the almighty "bell of death" at 6:38 . By far the most natural, relaxed and dynamic of them all. He was just born to play this. Dette is like a quantized / machine perfect / no dynamics version of it (meant as a compliment). An d as much as I liked Paul during his Forbidden days, his timing oscillates constantly and the double bass is not precise.... maybe he had a bad day or his drumfills were not sounding right.... Lombardo is the true king.
Dave Lombardo all the way. He had the most groove, feel, passion in Slayer. Some Paul fanboys or hardcore fans say "Dave can't play Divine Intervention." or "Have you listened to Divine Intervention?" They're talking about technical abilities. Paul may be more technically proficient, but Dave plays much smoother, musical, more expressive, with a lot of attitude, and he's more creative.
I agree... The role of Lombardo as composer is the difference.... Dette can play even faster but he naver recorded with the band so we could not know how it would be
Hello friends, sorry for the misinterpretation of drummers . 11:30 minutes is not Paul Bostaph but Jon Dette . If there is someone that interests some other comparison between musicians puden ask here in the comments. Greetings.
Dave has a definite hardcore punk feel to his playing which makes slayer... SLAYER!! Paul is awesome, but he has a totally different feel. They’re both great in very different ways
Dave is always better, better playing, better sounding kit... & Dave is the original. I've never missed a Slayer show since '85 until last year--King is too cheap to pay Dave so I am done with them.
Paul and Jon are great drummers in their own right. But Dave is is a drum universe all his own. What makes him so great is not only is he a shredder, but the way he plays the drums- his touch on the drums if you will, adds a whole new dimension to his abilities.
Been a die hard and loyal fan of Bostaph since Divine intervention. he blew my mind back then and still does. Paul Bostaph is flawless. With that being said there is no denying Lambordo's Iconic playing. He had definitely paved the way for many. Dave's playing is no were near as clean as Paul's playing. Bostaph is well polished.
hugolafhugolaf weird thing about Paul is he swings his thrash beat and never seems to finish a fill. Great technique and playing on his own songs, but he can’t do Dave songs.
@@sammyloehnis3373 I know I'm a year late but you just perfectly described why I feel weird listening to Paul. His fills never seem to lead anywhere and in songs with slight pauses to add power to the next hit, it's not there on his performances.
These 2 guys are my idols!!! I always considered Lombardo my favorite all time drummer, followed closely by Bostaph and the drummer from rush. But after watching this video (5 times in a row) I'm not so sure anymore. Lombardo makes it look easy, he does it like it's nothing. You can see he owns/wrote these tracks. But I think Bostaph has the edge on speed, God!! He is so on point keeping the Rhythm, yet so fucking fast! Omg!!! I wish I could do that!
I'm proud to say that I've listened to Slayer as long as I could find their bootlegs at the flea-market as far back as '85. Dave is 1 of 4. I can never be asked to choose "one or the other"; I'll change the subject. Technically, Dave is noticeably faster, all the time. His fills are legendary & he is a first among others to create the skills for the art of thrash metal. Paul, wow. He loves his snares. Loves to make sure the snare is properly tuned to express the songs as they were written, and you can hear it. Daves snare gets lost in his fills, idk why; bizarre really. 2 great drummers 100% different yet great in every way
I like your comment about the snare. One thing that drives me nuts at metal shows is the kick is always WAY up in thr mix, burying EVERYTHING else, including guitars. I HATE that. The snare always seems to get buried more than anything else.
Dave is FAR superior to Paul in terms of double bass speed/technique. Just listen to the difference in War Ensemble. With that said, Paul has excellent rolls/fills. His hands are right up there with Dave. But overall Dave is better because of his foot pedal speed.
Absolutely Amazing Performance by Both..I Love Both for Different Drumming Reasons. I Sleep On That. Fucking Amazing By Both!! And I Don't Compare..Each Has Their Place In The Greatest Thrash Speed Metal Band...Just Amazing!
No comparison...... It's like comparing a pile of mush to a razor blade. Seriously... It's not even remotely close comparing these two. Lombardo is Slayer just as much as Araya or King!
Bostaph, Lombardo and Dette are all excellent. No mediocrity there. Taste is surely what differs. An example of this has happened in the Repentless album when King has said Hanneman had chosen Bostaph over Dette whereas King himself prefers Dette. By the time of Jeff's death, Kerry King chose Bostaph in order to keep Hanneman's input part of Slayer. Nevertheless, if human relationships were easy, Lombardo would still be in the band. ; )
Their both great drummers but for me Dave was and always will be the best slayer drummer. His drumming on the golden period (reign - seasons) not only defined slayer but set the blueprint for extreme metal period!
Man i swear its cuban genetics. Paul basically had to get jacked to play Dave's shit. Plus he warms up tops an hour unlike lombardo who never really worked out, and he never warms up.
Dave is regarded the best thrash drummer ever. Dave wins this battle hands down. He has an easiness to him, just appears comfortable behind the drum kit. Having said that, there are so many awesome thrash/death metal drummers that could give Dave a run for his money.
This is fairly easy. Just compare the tempos😬. Lombardo will always be the prototype Trash Metal drummer of all times. Also because he plays more creative and dynamic than anyone before and after.
All slayer drummers are 100% SLAYER. Bostaph playing divine intervention was like the coolest shit when I was 16 in 1994-5. But already being a ten year fan from the first time I heard show no mercy, loving Dave's play, Paul just made a new sound but it is still SLAYER as fuck. I'm not familiar with JD but if he's SLAYER then he's slayer. Maybe a filler of what have you, still good enough to play the slay
I really love all three! I got to meet Paul at an airport, could not have been a nicer dude! I think Jon is Terribly underrated.. But in my humble opinion there has ALWAYS been one drummer for Slayer.. Dave! Btw, he"s actually left handed
First of all, dont know dont give a shit about dette. Now bostaph is a phenomenal drummer, thank god he was there for Slayer. But Lombardo with slayer live, i dont know, it just seems it flows together a lot better. MY OPINION
This is so obvious, there's no comparison to Lombardo. He's the steadiest time keeping machine there is. Whoever thinks otherwise is an idiot. This has nothing to do with personal preference. Lombardi is technically sound, sharp, on time and doesn't miss a roll or skip a beat or fuck up whereas I can notice the deficiencies with the other guys.
When Paul took over in 1992 he was on the up, Dave not so great... e.g. there's some very shaky footwork on Decade. More recently Dave is a real drummers drummer, all that technique, the fills, detail etc. and live the footwork's just mind blowing. Upstairs Paul has amazing physicality...for any vintage never mind 50+!!! Somewhat fitting for a Slayer show, but occasionally he is a little shaky on the feet now and then. My preference Dave, but go see Slayer with Paul while you can! Feckin' Awesome show! :)
I can´t do the comparison. I sometimes try to listen to Slayer with Bostaph but he remains, in my opinion, the most sloppy and over rated drummer in metal.
Dave is superior, without a doubt. Not just because he was the original drummer to these songs...but because he's so ambidextrous! Which allows him to play with lesser effort than Bostaph. He also doesn't always resort to finger techniques while playing fast. His full stroke at full speed is probably unmatched...
go back to the golf course..........us drummers know who Slayers best drummer is. and its not lombardo or dette. being that Paul has been Slayers longest running drummer, they tend to agree too.
Lombardo 10000%......
Aldo Maldonado Period.

It's everyone either praising lombardo in the comments or comparing he and Paul Bostaph. But I'm gonna list them.
1. Dave
2. Jon
3. Paul
man what a noticeable difference between them both!!!! Dave IS superior but Paul still is a great successor
All this made me see (once again) is that Jon is the correct replacement for Dave if we just cannot have Dave. He can handle the DB
Gilitar doesn't really matter. Bostaph has put out better music even if it was only one album that's better than all the rest
no comparison, you are right......Paul just blows Dave away.
Bostaph has problems to play rythem constantly @ War Ensemble you can hear clear his fail on his tomtom
Nevertheless, if human relationships were easy, Lombardo would still be in the band. ; )
Dave Lombardo is the best!
Their both great drummers but for me Dave was and always will be the best slayer drummer. His drumming on the golden period (reign - seasons) not only defined slayer but set the blueprint for extreme metal period!
Yeah, Lombardo actually wins but if we compare Lombardo in 1981-1992 with Bostaph in 1992-2003, Bostaph wins.
1 - Lombardo
2 - Dette
3 - Bostaph
Lombardo takes the crown.
He plays with a feeling, and not a machine that no one is better than dave lambardo) 🤘🏻
Dave wrote the best drum tracks, wow somebody else ,can maybe Play them better at any giving time. Lambardo created a sound that lasts decades!!
Dave is amazing but Paul is a killing machine
21:43 Rob Dukes - Exodus
0:00 Bostaph (War Ensemble)
05:32 Lombardo (War Ensemble)
10:28 Dette (Angel of Death)
15:50 Lombardo (Angel of Death)
Lombardo, Dette, Bostaph
I am not a drummer so I am going strictly on what I see and hear, but Lombardo by a loooooog ways. Followed by Dette.
Man i swear its cuban genetics. Paul basically had to get jacked to play Dave's shit. Plus he warms up tops an hour unlike lombardo who never really worked out, and he never warms up.
Italian as well as him having adhd
Lombardo.... But the intro of killing fields is just wwhhhooooaaaaaa!!!
*Lombardo because he kicks the drums like they owe him a ton of money*
Lombardo has better time, groove and feel. I hear little fluctuations and inconsistencies in Bostaph's playing.
Paul bostaph????
Jon dette????😂😂😂😂
DAVE LOMBARDO IS THE TRUE FUCKING SLAYER...SALUTANS TO DAVE LOMBARDO....
MY OPINION
Its like comparing a grand master to good functioning journeyman drummer. How the hell does any drummer compare to Lombardo??!!
Lombardo by far.
Paul looks like Dave Grohl at first 😁
a huevo tiene que haber un comentario en español xD a mi gusto el mejor es dave despues dette y al final paul no se siento que le falta energia
Concuerdo Men.
Lombardo all the way
Hands down Dave is a drum God ..
Geee. Who would've guessed that Lombardo plays the drum parts for Angel of Death and War Ensemble the best. He only wrote the damn parts.
Dave's on money. Paul is out-of-sink on those kicks.
every drummer in this video is unique, Paul and Dave are masters and best for their periods of time in Slayer . Nobody better than all of them.
Just Lombardo. He does not imitate and shoots like a machine gun and with such ease. He is the best!
I can´t do the comparison. I sometimes try to listen to Slayer with Bostaph but he remains, in my opinion, the most sloppy and over rated drummer in metal.
Lombardo makes it look easy, well of course. He did write it 🥁🤘
Paul's an awesome drummer but his feet are off alot
The difference is after a show dave looks like he is ready to go back to back. Paul looks like he just ran the boston marathon
Dave is superior, without a doubt. Not just because he was the original drummer to these songs...but because he's so ambidextrous! Which allows him to play with lesser effort than Bostaph. He also doesn't always resort to finger techniques while playing fast. His full stroke at full speed is probably unmatched...
Well, maybe Gene Hoglan
+Mayowa Adebesin yep gene is where Dave learned most of what he knows. Gene is best metal drummer ever.
go back to the golf course..........us drummers know who Slayers best drummer is. and its not lombardo or dette. being that Paul has been Slayers longest running drummer, they tend to agree too.
both Paul and Dave are great drummers. Dave is the shit tho
Lombardo has the technique to play better!
Lombardo of course......
