Paul is good guy. I prefer Lombardo's style and creativity, but I have to say, Paul is tighter live, and God Hates Us All is my favorite album, tied with Reign In Blood, and Bostaph plays on it. I don't feel like it took away anything from the quality of the songs.

It's nice to see someone who can feel good about himself without dogging on somebody else - even his predecessor. That's strong, imo. Huge fan of both amazing drummers - and that's saying something, because drums are especially highlighted in Slayer's music.

Paul is an amazing drummer, but just like Mike Mangini he stepped into a huge band that had a sound whose foundation was a very specific drum sound.
I know it must suck for both of them being constantly compared to their predecessors, but that's just the way it goes. Slayer's legacy is built partly on Dave's drumming. They would never have been as good with another drummer.

Best Slayer drummer for me. I first heard Slayer on a mix tape my friends brother made around 93-94. It had Seasons of the Abyss and Dead Skin Mask on it (still some of my favourites)
Slayer then released Devine Intervention. That drum roll at the beginning of Killing Fields blew me away and I knew they were in good hands with Bostaph. I saw them at the time in Leeds with a young up and coming band called Machine Head.
That album was the soundtrack to my early years at high school.
I even stole the lyrics from Devine Intervention and made them into a poem about school for an English lesson 😂
My teacher liked that much it was put in the wall haha
They didn’t know it was Slayer 👍🏻👍🏻

Divine Intervention was the first Slayer album I ever listened to with Killing Fields being the first song I listened to, and when I heard that drum intro I was blown away as I had never heard anything like that before.

I took Paul over Dave, I was 19, a HUGE Nicko fan, just like Paul. Still am. And he was like Nicko on speed, his high hat work, drum fills, "phrasing" as he says and so on. To they are my big TWO top influences. I'm only 47 but also loved Bill Ward, Ian Paice, Carl Palmer etc. Then moving into thrash, Lar's approach was just so hard hitting, and there music (back then) was so ahead of it's time, just like early Sabbath. Even though i was like 6 to 9 I still heard and loved that stuff. Now there's just too many younger kids that are incredible, especially in the Death Metal scene which I love. But PAUL is what threw me into the speedy, double bass, fast fill stuff. And I covered GEMINI (by Slayer) which was just phenomenal. And many people don't even know about it, or how to play it correctly. I learned it backwards and forwards because it was just this masterpiece of everything I had learned from about 6 when I started playing. Thanks PAUL!!

Paul is way better imo. He has a far harder and prominent percussive impulse. His rhythms have a tighter intensity than Dave's. Dave is noticeably looser.

Much respect man! Stepping in for a legend like Dave with everybody doubting you and owning that shit like a boss. You're forever a part of this band in my eyes man

I think his drumming at DI is phenomenal, I doubt Dave would have pulled it off as good. He sounds pissed, aggressive, fast and technical. I don't miss Dave on that album at all.
Same with Exodus' Shovel Headed Kill Machine, he is just a machine gun on that album. Phenomenal.
However he has been pretty ordinary in the other Slayer albums he has played, his work in Repentless is so simplistic - is this the same guy who played in DI?
I feel he has the skill, talent and technique however his output is inconsistent. Maybe it depends on the band he is in, the freedom he's given, etc.

Is it just me or has he played the fast songs much slower in the last few years than dave did?

Gettin' old, he doesn't do anything as crazy as like the intro to Killing Fields in Repentless either. Repentless should have been a 6-7 song EP.

Yes. Live, it's quite obvious - and a let down. Gene Hoglan, who's probably the same age, would never do that.

hugolafhugolaf You assume it's Bostaph who has made the decision to slow a song down.

I don't care who is technically better, or who is better overall, I like both, I know there's a lot of annoying Lombardo's fanboys out there, particularly my favorite slayer album in the drums aspect is from God Hates Us All.
