Mohammed Zayed RLY? How do you plan on installing Windows via USB then? It's gonna boot into SSD and just stay there, BIOS order should always, at least IMO be that USB's and Discs should boot first. It makes no sense to have your storage boot first. Yes, gives you 2 seconds faster boot but it's not going to make a difference.

    • @grahamhurst6212
      @grahamhurst6212 5 лет назад

For such a well-versed expert, not having the boot order with the drive first is a Massive n00b cock-up, it would probably boot in under 10 seconds. It also make me wonder how much faster the 1 1/2 minutes boot time with the old hard drive would have reduced. Naughty Jayz lol

    Hey Jay,
Why don't you have any tutorial videos about post- build. For example, updating BIOS, testing components, changing Memory speed, installing drives / Windows, adding additional HHD / SSD, configurating the system......stuff like that.
I have found very few videos about this stuff, its usually all about building the PC and the video ends once the power is switched on.
You're always asking for suggestions on videos to make- I think these would be great as the topics are seldom covered in detail and it would help first time builders, thanks.

I think it may be interesting to show a full laptop upgrade path. That is, show how you can upgrade your RAM, processor, hard drive, as well as cleaning the fan, replacing the thermal paste on both the GPU and CPU in a laptop. I find that a lot of folks do not know that they can upgrade all of these things and buy the components second-hand via eBay and Newegg and give their laptop a new lease on life.
As a further suggestion, show folks how to use the Intel "Product Specifications" tool to teach people how to find their CPU socket type, TDP and then how to locate the highest-spec CPU which will fit with their laptop (and its acceptable power limit). The Intel tool can also be used to figure out if their laptop is using a soldiered CPU or one which can be replaced.
    Here is a good example:
A Dell laptop my friend had was showing its age -- had an old Intel Core i3-2310M processor from 2011:
    ark.intel.com/products/52220/-
Using that information, I was able to query all CPUs this machine could support and got a cheap second-hand Intel Core i7-2640M processor:
    ark.intel.com/Search/FeatureFilter?productType=processors&MaxTDPMax=35&SocketsSupported=PPGA988
Maybe show your viewers on how to use CPU-Z to read the RAM specification and how to find their motherboard manual/specification and upgrade the RAM via Newegg, etc.
I used this method to bump the laptop memory from 4GB to 16GB and the laptop had a new lease on life!

If you do nothing else to an old computer, you will feel that you could use the old computer you added an SSD to a few years longer because it became faster. Jay was very helpful and I hope more people take his advice since the prices of SSD drives have been dropping dramatically in the last year.

Actually, I feel we've gone backwards. Now most modern laptops won't even allow you to open them, or at least, get to their internal components without disassembling everything (Mainly due to the increasing trend of making 'unibody' devices, and for marketing reasons: Non-serviceable devices means buying a new one if something goes bad or paying a huge amount of money to send it to an official repairing station OR trying to repair it by yourself, voiding the warranty). On the other hand, I've got a 2000 Compaq laptop that requires just two screws to access the HD, and another two to access the RAM. Oh, you can even swap out the CD and floppy drives if they go bad, or if you just want to put other interfaces instead! In my case, I've got a laptop, which is from 2016, that requires just 6 screws to get inside, but I don't want to risk voiding the warranty...
EDIT: By chance, was your 1999 laptop an iBook? Because those darned things were near-impossible to service. Swapping just the hard drive required you yo disassemble the entire laptop. No joke.

I don't even think he could have messed with the boot order in the first place because it's a Dell laptop, I have a modified HP Envy desktop and when it was fullstock (MOBO was an "Orchid 3", couldn't find much info about it), I tried to go into the BIOS and I couldn't change the boot order, and the BIOS was a custom HP BIOS for HP computers specifically (or so I think.) I think the laptop's BIOS would have just been Apple'd just like my desktop would (way less options.) Although I don't have much experience with DELL computers, I think they might be in a boat really close to HP.

I'll probably set up windows xp & dualboot windows 7 on it as a testrig for various hardware as my cousin got my athlon II x3 450 processor in his rig with 14 gb ram now. (another relative had a am3+ motherboard left over that overclocks well but doesnt unlock cpu cores (sits stable at 3.4 ghz atm with a amd phenom cooler for now.)
(1x8 gb 1600 mhz with that motherboard & 3x2 gb 1333 he got from me.)
I do have a athlon II x3 445 in my previous windows xp rig that im currently trying too sell off but might experiment with that fast ddr2 ram in that rig & with the core 2 quad along with a pentium dualcore e2160 at 1.8 ghz.

@@-Gadget- er... Who wants to even look for other devices at boot??? What are we running here, a tablet??? I wish the tablets I have used would boot from among other things, the SD-card, to no avail, and to answer your question, I do... every day, too, Not because I have to, but because I want to... I use it so much that it would be pointless to disable it!

    SSD in a old pc:
    1. Update your hardrive controller driver.
    2. Turn off indexing.

disabling superfetch on an ssd might be good for lower memory usage too

I know it's has been a long time since you made this video, but let me tell you that purchasing a ssd instead of using the old hdd has improved the speed of my laptop A LOT.
