- So your heating stops working the three or two way valve is gone, so you turn it to manual for now. What is best to do, renew the whole valve or just the motor on top. Also my plumber wants to change the whole thing when I can just change the motor myself, so why does he not do this cheaper option. All will be revealed watch on.

The most common time of year for a zone valve body to stiffen up or seize & burn the motor out, is Autumn, when heating systems have been off for 6 months & the valve has stuck through lack of use.
I've replaced several recently, including 2 in my own house.
A possible way to avoid this issue is to flick your heating on for an hour, once a week in the summer months. Give the valve something to do.
It does work out economically because a whole valve is £90 + labour.
Also, make sure your plumber puts inhibitor in the system when he tops it back up (Fernox). This helps to keep your valves nice & smooth.
Thanks for the tips Mark.
Thanks Al, isn't that why they come as a kit, motor and valve together? My valve played up last year, took the motor off and tried to free the valve but the paddle part broke 😢 The plumber replaced both valve and motor at the same time as it was a kit. Luckily I have isolation valves each side of the valve so didn't need draining down.
Great to hear. They never normally have valves either side.
Shouldn't isolation valves be fitted either side of EVERY changeable/repairable unit, ie cisterns, radiators, showers, sinks, and taps in general .?
@@franklettering Plumbers wouldn't want to do that as it would make it too easy for customers to do the work themselves.....
I think I must have had a conscientious plumber as they fitted isolation valves each side of the heating pump and diverter valve and same with the hot water tank, just makes life easier if the one item needs replacing. I guess you could argue the more valves then more potential leaks 🙂
Good video as always. Stiff valve cause failure? I'm not to sure. When valve in CH only position motor is stalled with full mains voltage across it, consuming 6 watts. Some excellent videos of how it works on here. So a stiff valve is no worse than that. I think the problem is the dreadful design that even Heath Robinson would be pushed to think up! I think how long they last is down to luck.
Hi could you show how to change an electric heating pump shower please
Love your Chanel
A son as one comes up. Have to wait for a job to come in.
@@dereton33 thanks have a great day from Dublin Ireland
Good timing this Al - I had a new motoised valve in my Worcester Bosh Boiler a couple of years ago and now occasionaly the hot water stops working but heating is fine so I expect this has what happened - I am pretty sure they didn't drain the whole thing down - or is that not necessary in a combi boiler - could they have changed the whole thing perhaps without draining?
They can just drain the top of the boiler to do this job and leave the rest of the system full up.
Hello my friend can you explain please the two systems, primary and secondary what the difference is and how they work. Thank you
Primary is the hot water you draw off from your taps, secondary is the water that circulates around your boiler, radiators and inner coil of your hot water cylinder.
We have been away twice this year and on each occasion we have returned to find the heating on 24/7 despite being set to come on periodically on the timer. The BG engineers say the zone valve is stuck and apply lubricant and free it up . This was done in Feb and again yesterday. They say that's all that can be done. Is this correct?
That would not help a bit the valve head or compete valve needs replacing.
Hello, I was told that a f and e tank gives the tap water? Just had a fault where ball valve made humming noise when customer opening tap?
It does not give the tap water. That noise you heard was the main roof tank filling to replace what you drew out of the tap.
Got a problem on my system, pump and valve work for the hot water but not for the heating, wondering if it’s the valve / motor that’s stuck just a bit puzzling that the pump doesn’t kick in
If the valve is broken then it wont.
Can you do videos on how to test electrically if a fan, gas valve, pump is working please? Thank you
Need serious equipment for that so no. I leave all that to my son in law who is an electrician.
@@dereton33 don’t you just need multi meter?
There are a few You tube videos that go into the electrics and testing. It can be quite complicated so best to find an electrician with experience of heating systems.
Is this the motor which differentiates whether your hot water or heating comes on? When we put the hot water on, our radiators turn on leaving us sweating. We've had two plumbers replace a motor but the problem persits.
Yes they do. The plumber needs to change the complete valves not just the motor.
With only hot water demand a spring in the valve should make the hot water side open and the heating side closed. It sounds like the valve is stuck in the mid point position. You need a new valve (with a new spring).
Plumbers offer some sort of warranty/guarantee ?!?!😮Mine didn't when one of the 2 expansion tanks he fitted (1 hr labour, £267 for the pair) failed after 8 months... 😭
Sorry to hear that.
Gives us plumbers a bad name.
