    there's a great backstory to this. Warren & a friend went on a trip to Hawaii & met up with a young lady who offered to take them back to a friend's place to hang out. on the way she mentioned the friend might not actually be there & they might have to break into the place. Warren & his buddy started imagining the letter Warren would have to write. "Dear Dad. Send lawyers." "& guns" the friend added. "& money" Warren finished. & so a hit song was born.

    Warren Zevon is a freakin' legend.
    He hired Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks as band members on his first album (Pre Fleetwood Mac)
    I don't know if you reacted to this, but Warren wrote and performed a song that was later done by Linda Ronstadt called "Poor Poor Pitiful Me".
    Warren isn't a humorous songwriter, more like a wry sense of humor sneaks in.
    "Jeannie Needs A Shooter", "Boom Boom Mancini" (A great story song, and a true story at that), "Excitable Boy" (From the same album as "Werewolves of London" and "Lawyers, Guns and Money"), "Seminole Bingo", "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" .... .... .... There is so much to choose from.

    • @CharCanuck14

      As Alan B said above, Excitable Boy is a great song, it’s probably the most upbeat happy sounding song with some seriously disturbed lyrics you’ll ever hear, you should check out his farewell song too, Keep me in your heart for awhile, he was dying of lung cancer, not so much from lifestyle but he has mesothelioma, from asbestos. He was such a fun character

  • @TheNorcalmonkey67
    @TheNorcalmonkey67 9 месяцев назад +19

    This entire album (Excitable Boy) is just killer. Warren was an amazing writer, darkly humorous, with just the right amount of smart & snark - surrounded himself with amazing musicians. A regular on David Letterman - truly a must see was Warren revealing on Letterman that he was, in fact, dying of cancer and gave one of his last live performances and it was breathtaking....his loss was a loss for us all.

    Warren was a masterful storyteller. Some of my favorites: Roland (the headless Thompson gunner), Hit Somebody (the hockey song), Excitable Boy, and one called My S***'s F***ed Up that might not be appropriate for the channel but is a must listen.

    • @recoil53
      @recoil53 9 месяцев назад

      I think his version "Back on the High Life" tells a better story too. It's just his voice, because Steve Winwood doesn't sound like anything has been wrong. Warren sounded like life has been ROUGH. Getting back in the high life is more aspirational and not certain.

    Thankfully I saw Warren Zevon perform in the late 80s in Milwaukee during his “Sentimental Hygiene” album tour. He was fantastic! And his parting words to David Letterman when he was ravaged with cancer, yet bravely and graciously told Letterman the key to life was “To Enjoy Every Sandwich” David Letterman was speechless for a moment until he realized how simple and profound that life advice was. Warren Zevon was a remarkable man!

    Warren Zevon (Zee-Vahn) was absolutely incredible and lived life to the fullest before passing away from cancer. One of the incredible thing is David Letterman (THE show back in the day) was a huge fan and devoted a huge block of time for Warren's last appearance. It was one of the most heartfelt tv moments of all-time. Warren got through his music with some incredibly poignant songs (that he wrote when he knew he was going for good.) One of Warren's great early songs is "I'LL SLEEP WHEN I'M DEAD" and he lived life like that. REST IN PEACE, MR. ZEVON. The world is a better place with you having been in it.

    He even played in a band with Stephen King. Not very well known, but he has so many cool songs. A couple more of my favorites are Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner, and My Shit's Fucked Up.

    I recently ran across a video of Warren Zevon doing a cover of Prince's Raspberry Beret on David Letterman's show in 1990. It was very good and he took the song and made it his own without changing any lyrics.

    I saw him play a solo show in a bar in Cincinatti. Great show. He had a dry sense if humor. RIP.

    The next Warren Zevon song you check out just HAS TO BE Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner. You guys love story songs and this will certainly be one to add to your experiences.

    Just so ya know, this song was inspired by Warren's trip to Mexico with Hunter S. Thompson. It makes so much sense then

    Definitely a great song! You've GOT to hear Excitable Boy, Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner (from the same album as Lawyers Guns and Money), and Keep Me In Your Heart (from one of his last releases). You'd probably like My S**it's F****d Up (which is about him going to the doctor) this was one of his last releases before he died of Mesophilioma (cancer).

    You guys hit it on the head with this being a great story, because this song is yet another excellent example of Warren Zevon's skills as a songwriter and storyteller, not to mention a tremendous showcase for his wry, dark sense of humor. If you want to catch another great story of his, I highly recommend "Mr. Bad Example."

    WOO-HOO! Love me some Zevon. "I Was In The House When The House Burned Down, Accidently Like A Martyr"" and "Play It All Night Long" are musts (among many others).
    ALSO: I called my dad once from the local lock up and he said, "Well, maybe I'll see ya in the morning." He came late the next afternoon. Let me stew for awhile.

    Here’s suggesting “Desperados Under the Eaves,” “Jungle Work,” and the achingly beautiful “The Heartache.”
    Warren was an extremely gifted lyricist whose songs were like short stories, and he was so beloved by writers that a bunch of them teamed up with him to co-write one of his albums.
