It's a song about mercenaries in Africa during the 60's and 70's. Soldiers of fortune. It's a dying breed, literally.
If kids today used Wikipedia to understand the significance of places like Biafra and Mombassa or people like the Bantu, they would enjoy this more. And if that's not enough, they should check out Patty Hearst, the young heiress of one of America's wealthy families, who was kidnapped by a 70s terrorist group, but then showed up packing at their bank robberies. :) By the way, Ireland has made progress, but Lebanon and Palestine, not so much. I'll leave Berkeley alone. :)

War is a racket. Amazing lyricist. Only ever heard the title track "Excitable Boy" back in the 80s & again - great social commentary like this one is. RIP Warren Zevon.
his song "my shits fucked up" was a heartbreaker. RIP to a legend
And the odd thing is he wrote that song several years before he had cancer. Keep me in your heart for a while is a song he wrote when he knew he was dying, and it always makes me tear up bad.
@@StrangeScaryNewEngland His final album The Wind is outstanding. Full of excellent songs written as he faced his final days. A bunch of stellar musicians were happy to help him on the project. There is also a great documentary that followed him through the journey

The villain in the 2rd Jurassic Park film, his name is Roland (he's the hunter and kidnaps the baby trex), and (this is a stretch, but) his "counterpart" on the protagonists is named Eddie Van Owen.
The writer was such a huge Zevon fan that he used the 2 characters names from "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner" as inspiration for the films characters.
