This is one of my favorites from Warren. So many people know of Warren only through the few "popular" songs that get played on the radio, but never discover his truly masterful writing, which could be gut-wrenching and brutally honest, or achingly beautiful. He the courage to lay bare his soul to the world, warts and all. RIP, I'll keep you in my heart for a while.
Warren Zevon is one of my favorite artists of all time! Such a clever writer and all around great musician.
Inspired by a break up with long time girlfriend and mother of his child, Warren struggles with love and also explores love and lust in the L.A. music scene in the lyrics.
The piano, the bass, complex chord changes and the strings make for a great tune, all produced by Jackson Browne.
The soaring harmonies are courtesy of Don Henley and Glenn Frey. A great tune from 1976. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Frank. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Wish you would play his later songs. Yes he had great songs on his first album but he had great music up until he passed. God bless you Warren
GENIUS. GENIUS. Do more please.
I've only in the last decade got into Warren Zevon and he's AMAZING
Musician, songwriter and singer
He shows a wicked sense of Monty Python humor which I adore
Beautiful song that touches on what has been going on for way to long.
Thank you Frank for the suggesting it
Thank you for your reaction Harri
🎶💜🎵✌️
Yes, please, I love Warren Zevon. Try Splendid Isolation.
I totally love "Splendid Isolation" .. Especially his performance of it on Letterman .. Check it out if you haven't already seen it !
Accidentally Like a Martyr is a Zevon song I think you would enjoy. He has many.
I love Warren Zevon and I love this song. It sounds beautiful with the great backup vocals. Nice reaction. Thanks Harri and Frank 🌺✌️
Warren invented song Noir
Love Warren Zevon. 🙂
Produced by Jackson Browne with Harmonies from Glenn Frey and Don Henley...supposedly about his ex-wife cheating with another musician. Thanks Harri as always.
She said, “So long, Norman.” Didn’t even know his name or knew it but rubbed it in that she didn’t care. One of the best pop lyricists of the age but let’s give acknowledgement to the fantastic side musicians and technical production. That would include Werewolves, Lawyers, so many more. Kudos to Jackson Browne, Waddy Wachtel and all the great musicians that fought to be a part of his sessions.
I miss Warren. :(
Me too...
While we're on a singer who has a song called the French Inhaler, might I offer a somewhat tenuous link to a French singer you have yet to feature? Grégory Lamarchal was born with cystic fibrosis, and died from it aged 23. Nevertheless, he dedicated his life to his joy for singing. He won national tv competition Star Academy, was voted breakthrough artist of the year in 2006, and toured France, Belgium, and Switzerland, despite increasing breathing problems. His first album charted for 26 weeks, and his second was released a month after his death. I suggest his live Olympia 2006 performance of Je t'écris (I'm writing to you). He died just five months later, awaiting a transplant.
The song mentions Norman Mailer (author, novelist). What’s the connection? Also, I’ve owned this album on vinyl for at least 20 years and never gave the song a second thought until you brought it back to my attention. It’s a lot better than I remember it being. Thanks for that. 👍
The connection is Marilyn Monroe, who is a sort of imaginary character in this song. Several allusions to her.
Please react to his “keep me in your hearth for awhile “.
The Marilyn Monroe allusions give this song such poignancy.
I just love that you have got the "zevon bug" Do a reaction video of "life.ll kill you" the title track from possibly his best album ever....pretty pretty please... and I will consider beeing a patreon...
His ex heard this song, and smiled and said "everybody knew he was a genius."
Have you listened to Warren Zevon’s Roland the headless Thompson Gunner yet?
Haire this song is about his ex cheating on him. You should find his son's comments
You made an interesting comment when you brought in Elton John in in light of Elton's "Candle In The Wind" and its connection to Marilyn Monroe. Whether the focus of Zevon's song is his ex-wife or Marilyn I can understand both views (and they could overlap), but there certainly are allusions to a beautiful, sad woman in a dog-eat-city/industry, which sound a lot like references to Monroe, particularly when he adds the name Norman suggesting Norman Mailer's controversial bio on Marilyn.
One of the greatest songs off a great album. Warren Zevon was a far better lyricist than Bernie Taupin ever thought of being.
Underrated try Transverse City or My rides here
Anybody even know what a french inhale is anymore?
