Roland, the Headless Thompson Gunner! Another Zevon classic! Thanks, Harri! ✌🏻💀
☝︎YES.
Yeah, that’s a great one!
So many great songs, but this one needs to be next!
My favorite.
Absolutely! I saw him in concert about a year before he got sick. He was phenomenal. Note perfect all night.
Love this song. Rich kid needs rich father to bail him out. Zevon is a great story teller. He's got some dark subject matter, but so well done. He deserves a deep dive, Harri.
He absolutely does! ♥︎
Underrated genius!
Sounds like Biden Gig.
Warren died of cancer and recorded an album and documented his struggle before he left. I strongly suggest the song My Shit’s Fucked Up. It is the most honest song you will ever hear. Thanks.
Agreed. It doesn't get more real than that.
I remember Warren guest starred on David Letterman, who was a big fan of his, during his final weeks. I can't remember what Dave said but Warren said something like "You act like you expect me to say something profound or say I don't mind dying. But I do. It's F*!ked up. I don't want to die!"
@@debjorgo enjoy every sandwich.
Damn!
@@melaniesweeten5401 One of the best lines ever. It has been uppermost on my mind through 4 years (and a month) of fighting an incurable cancer. In that vein, “Keep Me In Your Heart” is a beautiful and important song my wife and I have listened to multiple times.
You really must do “Keep Me In Your Heart For A While”. Yes, it’s sad because he wrote it when he knew he was dying. But, it’s also very beautiful.
Zevon had such a unique sensibility and mordant wit. No one writes songs like Zevon.
He certainly was an excitable boy!❤
Warren Zevon is a national treasure. RIP we miss you man. Thanks for all the great tunes.
“Keep Me in Your Heart” is by far his most interpersonal song, and one that I would love sang at my funeral. Perfect
Harri, 𝘈𝘤𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺, 𝘓𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘺𝘳 is a duet with Zevon and ... LINDA RONSTADT! Oooh ... ♡
I ADORE Warren unreservedly. There is no bad Zevon song. GENIUS RIP
You mentioned the guitars. His guitarist was Waddy Wachtel, who also played in Linda Ronstadt's band. Great player!
Also an X-Pensive Wino!
Waddy has also played with Jackson Browne!
@@brendamilloy2557 I think he pretty much played for everyone back then. 😉
@@knarf_on_a_bike you're right - he was everywhere in the 70's
Like many of Warren Zevon's they're novels or films in one's head. There's more suggested than is in the song. There's also a very emotional side to his writing like in "Mohammed's Radio, Searching For A Heart, Splendid Isolation, Carmelita, and maybe his self epitaph Keep Me In Your Heart"
" Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" is another Zevon classic.😎👌
For all the wonderful turns of phrase the British have contributed to our shared culture, I'd argue that one of America's greatest contributions is "The shit has hit the fan". There is no equivocation of that imagery.
Glad to see you reacting to reacting to Zevon, he is a rabbit hole that does lead to wonderland. Gotta check out "Accidentally like a Martyr" "jungle work" and "Play it all night long" that's only the tip of the iceberg man. Great vid as always Harri, Cheers!
I love Mama couldn't be persuaded from his 1976 debut album!😎 This song could've been sung/played by the Grateful Dead.😎👍
Love Mr. Zevon. Met him once and got to tell him so.
Always love the humor in Warren's lyrics. 'Poor Poor Pitiful Me' is another good example of that. Linda Ronstadt also did a version of it.
Linda Ronstadt didn't just do a version of it, she wrestled that song away and put her brand on it, she OWNED it.
@@davecummings2424 your ass she did. She did a COVER it’s Warrens song.
@@davecummings2424 She did the same thing with Carmelita. Heartbreaking version of that song. Zevon was an astounding songwriter, and Ronstadt took full advantage of that genius to insert her own magic.
@@davecummings2424
I like Zevon originals more and I don't believe those were quite suitable songs for Linda Ronstadt, she lacked the grittyness, cynicism and desperation Zevon conveyed so easily... specially regarding Carmelita, just because Zevon was a legit junkie.
And I'm saying it loving and adoring Linda ❤
@@JulioLeonFandinho I can't say you're wrong on a matter of taste. And we can agree on loving Linda.
"DAD! Get me outta this!!!"
Hunter Biden theme song maybe ?...or maybe the story of his life ?
@@brianlamb7937😂
So glad you did this review... In my opinion, he was overlooked and underappreciated.
Harri you’ve got to do Keep me in your heart for awhile . He wrote it after finding out he was dieting from brain cancer. Heartbreaking
Dont know if i could handle that..im teary already just thinking about it.So sad
Love …. It’s Music at its best 💕
Rest In Peace Warren Zevon 🙏🏼✝️
Warren wrote the most fantastic songs and always had the best musicians playing on them (look them up).
Funny, weird and serious, all in the same song.
LOVE this song! ❤️ The only thing wrong with it is it’s not long enough!
I love your love and the understanding of this masterpiece!
Harri, please consider reacting to 𝘛𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘖𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬 by him, as well. It's 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺. As well as 𝘞𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘴𝘰𝘯'𝘴 𝘎𝘶𝘯𝘴. Thank you so much. ♡
E C..........That would be "Veracruz"😉
@@wynnssecret8882 Oh gosh! Never knew that! Thanks! ♡
Glad to see that you discovered Warren Zevon. A unique and gifted individual.
Money is primary; with enough of it you can buy lawyers, guns, or both.
With enough of either or both of those you can make your own laws.
As an attorney friend once told me, "The law is for sale and best benefits those that can best afford it."
He did the song for the movie "Things to do in Denver when You're Dead". Also the name of the song, which is, of course, brilliant (film and song). Genius is an overused word but not when it comes to Warren.
"Desperados Under the Eaves" and "Mohammed's Radio" are perhaps my two favorite Warren Zevon songs. Thanks for the reaction video. Just subscribed! :)
I love Warren Zevon. I've always been a sucker for clever lyrics, and he sure has 'em. I discovered him surprisingly late in life too.
On this song, I really like the claps that come in on the third verse. Builds it up nicely.
Man, I fucking love Warren. One of the most under-appreciated talents ever.
Warren Zevon is a fantastic artist. Each of his albums are full of great gems like this.
Desperados Under the Eaves. True story about a time when he was down and out and living from motel to motel and pretty much spending most of the time in a drunken stupor. Great song.
Warren did a tremendous cover of Steve Windwood’s “Back in the High Life Again”. Gives it a whole different perspective.
Warren Zevon is one of the best kept secrets in the music industry his songs Country Living, Excitable Boy and Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner are all genuis.
I saw him live in Colorado, very small venue. His audience revered him. Of course it was an awesome, moving event! Many will never forget him; Warren ought to be played more often - he's that GOOD. He was very much in touch with himself, his Reality regarding Life and Death!
Linda Ronstadt covered a number of his songs: Poor poor pitiful me, Carmelita to name a few. He was a great artist in his own right for sure!😎👍👍
Linda covered four songs from his debut album; the two you mention from her *Simple Dreams* album, plus *Mohammed's Radio* from *Living in the USA* and *Hasten Down the Wind* from the album of the same name.
@@tombrearton3435 She was the queen of remakes. Most of them were great covers.Of the remakes that I know by her, I don't care for Ooh Baby baby, & Tumbling Dice. The original by the Stones is so RAW. Her version is pop/rock sounding to me. She covered Zevon songs proudly.😎👍👍
I still remember when David Letterman had Zevon as a sole guest, and he announced he was dying.
Warren, will get into the Rock Hall! It will happen,...should have years ago (all his friends in music: Browne, Springsteen, the Eagles, Raitt, Rohnstadt) Zevon rocked, with Witt, and humanity.
Please review his epitaph "Keep me in your heart for a while", and cry when you listen,
Thank you for reacting to the great Warren Zevon absolutely great songwriter and Musician
My favorite from this multi-talented individual.
I miss Warren Zevon. You’re getting a taste of his sense of humor, but he also wrote heartfelt songs - try “Desperadoes Under the Eaves.”
the mohammeds radio, finished with carmellita
Heartily endorse Desperadoes under the eaves for next song. And then so many more. His songs are so interesting and heartfelt
@@jocgo like the mystics and statistics say it will...
A really intelligent reaction. You really got it, an interesting angle of the lyrics. I love that summary of Lawyers Guns & Money.
Another great one by him. Love all your reactions. Please listen to my favorite of his songs "PRISON GROVE".
Poor poor pitiful me. my favorite
Saw him back in the day with Jimmy Buffett. What a crazy fun show that was.
Besides some of the songs already mentioned, you should check out the title song of the album, Excitable Boy.
“Desperadoes Under the Eaves.” "Accidentally like a Martyr" so many more
Glad u like the song, it’s a great tune
Of course my favorite song Splendid isolation
Boom boom Mancini, Mr bad example and Hula Hula boys are some I love. He's almost like the Bob Dylan for outlaws and the shamed....at times
I've probably listened to a dozen different performances of this song by Warren Zevon and I love every single one. Some other Warren Zevon songs I love are Muhammad's Radio and Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner.
Keep me in your heart for a while is a must
Yes! My favorite song of his! ❤️
What a great story teller, love his music 🎵🎶
Look up Warren’s lyrics. Read just the first stanza of each song. It is uncanny! I’ve never seen anyone so consistent in coming up with evocative imagery that pulls the listener into the experience!
Love Warren Zevon
Interesting Clever & Eclectic Songwriter. Miss Him
Roland the headless Thompson gunner is his finest song I'm sure you will love.
Keep Me In Your Heart.....
♥️ Warren.
While there isn't a movie titled Lawyers Guns and Money, there is a movie titled Things to do in Denver When You're Dead which is another great Warren Zevon song.
Love this one!
Warren grew up in LA, his dad was a Russian immigrant who was involved in numbers running. He grew up with all kinds of gangsters hanging around his home. Heard lots of wild stories. Later, he traveled around the world and tended to seek out dark, dangerous bars and talked with shady characters- arms dealers, soldiers of fortune... have him an appreciation for crazy stories and a lot of material to work with..
Zevon was a great but troubled writer, and a voracious reader of serious literature. He worked very hard on his music and got maniacal when he couldn't get it right. He spent much of that time drinking hard and womanizing, had terrible OCD but eventually got his shit together only to find out he was sick. All around a sad story with bright spots, but a tremendous talent gone too soon.
WZ quit drugs long before the diagnosis. Like in '87 or something.
A record 210 appearances on the David Letterman show. RIP Warren.
Wonderful review! You totally get it.
Finally a reactor who has discovered Warren Zevon!
There is so much to explore "Carmelita", "Mohammed's Radio", "Desperadoes Under The Eaves", "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner", "Tenderness On The Block", "Play It All Night Long", "For My Next Trick I Need a Volunteer", "I'll Slow You Down", "Fistful of Rain", "Sentimental Hygiene", "Splendid Isolation", "My Ride's Here", "Studebaker", "Never Too Late For Love", "Keep Me In Your Heart", and so much more...
Guitar by the master Waddy Wachtel. Zevon and Randy Newman are in a class by themselves, capable of equally hilarious and also heartbreaking songs. Sometimes in the same tune, like in Zevon’s Desperadoes Under the Eaves.
Accidentally Like a Martyr, Hasten Down the Wind, Desperados Under the Eaves, Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, Poor Poor Pitiful Me. Also his version of Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door" which he recorded for his last album as he was dying from cancer
His dad was a hitman/loan shark for Los Angeles biggest crime boss Mickey Cohen back in the 1940s and 50s, so Warren got a lot of inspiration for his lyrics from growing up around that environment
good choice and analysis. His songs and lyrics were always quirky and good and always worth the listen. not top 40, usually, but he was quite the song writer and musician.
One of my favourite Zevon tunes is Carmelita. Linda Ronstadt covered it, as well as a couple of other Zevon tunes. Check it out, as well as, 'Poor Poor Pitiful Me'. Oh, &, 'Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner'.
Killer tune.. always 💪🏻😎
Born in my home town, Chicago..
It's a felony that he's NOT in the RRHOF!! Come on, people!
I was totally in love with him
Zevon was so unusual yet so very gifted. Glad you are looking into his music.
you should check out Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner and The Envoy next, Harri!
Such a amazing song
I love and miss this supertalented musician. “Reconsider Me” is the loveliest plea for a second chance I’ve ever heard.
Warren Zevon was an absolute master mind....so many songs. This one, Werewolves of London, Excitable boy, poor poor pitiful me, My shits fucked up, Roland the headless Thompson gunner ...you could just go on and on. His sarcasm, his sense of humor, his genius.......all of it, was just amazing
Thank you for doing this. Warren had limitless talent.
RIP Warren. Jim
I am so pleased you found Warren. He is greatly missed.
Warren was a genius, brilliant and touches of humor
Harri, you should next listen to Excitable Boy &Wearwolfs of London fun songs
Great tune riding the bike…
One of the greatest American songwriters!! Check “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner”
I saw Warren live in Woodstock many years ago. He was brilliant. I love the little trip you’re taking me on revisiting these songs. Thank you. Take a listen to his Werewolves of London.
Fantastic song! He makes it such a story.
When he found out he was dying he wrote the song My Shit's Fucked Up. He had a great sense of humor.
This song & Werewolves of London were on our record player all the time when I was a kid! My brother and I wore out my dad’s record 😂 Still one of my favorites all these years later
❣️ Mr Dave ✌️
Thanks Harri ☘️🚬🥂🖤saw him once with Linda Ronstadt guitarist and eagles Bass player 🔥
Warren at his best.
Warren was a musician's musician. Didn't get a lot of airplay and wasn't nearly as well known in the general public as his talent deserved. But everybody in the industry knew his work and respected him greatly.
I had local radio station play this song when my dad died
I first heard this song done by Hank Williams Jr. but this is the original.
Darn, Hunter
Warren Zevon is one of the greatest singers and musicians of all time. The man could conduct an orchestra, a true musical genius. I love Carmelita, Desperados under the Eaves and keep me in your heart for a while. I hope you get to check some of those songs out Harri.
His music can be so up beat and lyrics so dark. Tells a great story, worth an in depth listen,
Warren was one of my favorites, he appeared on David Letterman’s show shortly before his death.
Sooo many brilliant Zevon songs! Try French Inhaler.
