So, George Harrison of The Beatles was visiting Jeff Lynne of ELO. Jeff Lynne played him a song that he wrote and George loved it so much that he asked if he could record it with him. Jeff agreed but first wanted to get his favorite guitar that he left at Tom Petty's house. When they went to pick it up, they asked if Tom would join them. Tom agreed, but suggested they go to Bob Dylans recording studio because it was better than Jeff's. So Tom calls up Bob and asks if they can come over. Less than a couple of hours after this all started, Jeff, George, Tom and Bob were all chatting at Bob's home studio about their mutual heroes and Roy Orbison was brought up. They all really looked up to him and Bob said "I've got his number". And Just like that the amazing Jeff Lynne, had himself a band that included four other people who all have a strong case as one of the 20 most influential musicians of the 20th century.

According to the group, that's not true. The first song (Handle with Care) was George's, not Jeff's. He had to put together a B-side song for a release, decided to use it, and asked Jeff to give him a hand.
They actually released a fairly short history video that's worth a watch:

This only shows how young these babes are. They only got pubes probably less than a decade ago. So, I understand why they wouldn't know who Bob Dylan is by sight. Or even George. And, also, they're in the discovery phase of music appreciation, which is the early/mid 20s. You start listening to stuff that came before your time. And beyond that, I'm 45 and The Beatles, Dylan, Lynne, Roy O were before my time. When I was 25 in 2001, I would've been able to pinpoint each one save for Lynne (by sight). I knew the song "Don't Let Me Down", of course, but I really only discovered ELO in 1997 w/ "It's A Living Thing" from Boogie Nights. Then I ventured a little further. But I don't blame kids that were actually BORN in 1997 or later not instantly knowing these people. Orbison was old and sick enough that he died before this video was made, so these gents weren't exactly close to the Millennial Generation.

Wilbury Jr. Jim Keltner, the session drummer and percussionist, was not officially listed as a Wilbury on either album, but was given the nickname "Buster Sidebury. Overdubs on the 2007 bonus tracks "Maxine" and "Like a Ship" were credited to "Ayrton Wilbury", a pseudonym for Dhani Harrison. The name Ayrton was used in honour of F1 driver Ayrton Senna. Brad & Lex, when George Harrison asked ELO mastermind, Jeff Lynne, to produce his 1986 album, Cloud Nine, the two rock legends hit it off so well that they decided to create a band of their own, inviting 3 other legends to join the group: Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and finally, Tom Petty. They quickly made a couple albums, with a couple hits, and a lot of terrific album tracks. Roy Orbison is heard singing on this song, but not seen in the video, except for his photograph, and his guitar in his empty rocking chair, as the video was made after he'd died. The Traveling Wilburys define the term, "super-group". They all pitched in equally in writing the songs, but the production was primarily handled by Jeff Lynne. Next, do the *video* of their hit, *"Handle With Care".*

I wish Brad and Lex could have been our age temporarily to talk about and enjoy those hours! I wouldn't wish it on them to forever live their lives back in 1977, for a variety of reasons. They honored him by using the full audio, and for his solo part the train passed through a tunnel, making it dark. Just in case you didn't already know, the significance of the rocking chair with a guitar in it and the framed portrait is that Roy Orbison died between them recording the song and filming the music video, so that was their way of honouring him.
I believe Jeff Lynn was the main instigator behind the Wilburys, already being friends with the others, especially Petty, for whom he had produced albums such as Full Moon Fever.
Always hoped you'd do the Wilburys at some point - they were one of those supergroups that didn't take themselves, or life too seriously and always had a good message.

Thanks guys, I'm sure I told you in the past to do this one. George Harrison formed this band and he wrote his song. Another great must do video is another one he wrote "Handle With Care" which George sings lead and a big hit song just like this one. They were never really a band that toured or anything but just five friends who enjoyed getting together from time to time and jamming together. That was George Harrison who kicked off the singing here and then at the end. Jeff Lynn (in the shaded ) was from ELO and Dylan has the slightly wavy or curly hair. Brad, I heard you say that Petty was a true superstar which is true but with George Harrison and Bob Dylan we're talking a whole different level level of superstars. A Beatle and Dylan, wow ! The Beatles and Dylan were the two main driving forces, influencers and most important figures in music from the sixties. Harrison and Dylan had a long time relationship that dated back to 1964. Their friendship began in September, 1964 when The Beatles were on their first US tour and we're in NYC. Dylan wanted to meet them so he went to the Delmonico Hotel where they were staying and brought his good friend along with him named marijuana. This was the first time The Beatles got high and immediately became huge potheads. After this encounter with Dylan the music quickly went to a whole nother level. The drug was very beneficial for The Beatles. Petty could never quite grasp how he ended up in The Traveling Wiburys. He didn't think he belonged there. He was a very humble guy and humility is a great trait in a person now isn't it? ✌️☮️💕👌

The Wilburys contained 4 of the greatest song writers to ever live (George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne). And then you add on one of the originators of rock music as well as one of the most iconic voices with Roy Orbison. The Wilbury's were primed to change the music landscape, but sadly Roy passed shortly after they released this album. When all 5 guys were interviewed before its release, Tom Petty said that the greatest part about this was seeing how his favorite writers write. And that he would get Roy's autograph every day.

Lex always seems to have an intuitive grasp of the meaning of a song and presents in a way that both makes sensed and you'll remember. It is a pleasure to watch you both. This song is so bitter sweet as most of these musicians have now passed. I know you've done ELO's Mister Blue Sky (Jeff Lynne) and Bob Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone, but you may want to appreciate them some more before they too pass. You could do other ELO songs as there are plenty. For Bob Dylan, you might try Subterranean Homesick Blues or Tangled Up in Blue.

A true super group, all icons in their own right. Jeff Lynne is still rocking on and making a resurgence if anything, he's been touring with ELO the last few years after many years of focusing only on music production, and his voice is as good as ever. An incredibly humble guy, if you read any interview with him he always felt like the schoolkid who was invited to play with his musical heroes even though he more than earned his right to stand amongst them.

Everyone in this Band was a superstar in another Band, or as a solo artist. The empty rocking chair is a tribute to the great Roy Orbison, who actually sings in this song, but died before the video was made. This Band sort of began as a joke by these guys, when they all ran into each other at a recording studio, with their other projects. This Band (Wilburys) only lasted a few years. unfortunately, most of them have since passed away.

The song speaks to our own mortality, in that, as the song goes, “We’re going to The End of the Line”. We’re all heading that way, though some of us have a shorter ride than others. Enjoying ourselves, letting go of old grudges(“…Remember to live and let live, well, it’s alright. The best you can do is forgive.”), just flat-out enjoying ourselves while we still have time, and, living the life we want to live(“…If you live the life you please, well it’s alright…”).

@@jjGriffiths I wasn't alive when the music stars of the '30s and '40s ( I was born in '47) were popular, but by time I was 5 years old I knew all the names and the music that they did, because I was exposed to it by radio, my parents, my musician father, TV and the records my parents played. SO just because someone wasn't alive at the time of a star's popularity, doesn't necessarily mean they won't KNOW those star's music, or what they look like. It has to do with being exposed to it.

This is what's called a supergroup, Brad/Lex. That's Beatles George and Bob Dylan. Bearded guy is Jeff Lynne (singer of ELO, you've done their stuff) and Tom Petty. Roy Orbison had died on Dec 6, 1988, before this video was made, which dates it. The rocking chair w/ guitar and his pic subs for Roy who had finished the song, but passed in the meanwhile. He's still there w/ them in the Handle With Care video. This was a bunch of icons in music deciding to do a side project together.
