Warren Zevon was a major influencer and widely respected in the industry. A couple of my favorites include “Lawyers, Guns and Money” and “Excitable Boy.” Rest easy sir.
"Ah-ooooh!" Zevon was from California. A few of my cousins went to the same high school that Zevon went to. But they went there twenty years later, so they never rubbed elbows with him. Zevon also wrote "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" which became a top 40 hit for Linda Ronstadt in 1977. London is where many werewolf movies were set. The song dropped in 1978. An American Werewolf in London dropped in 1981.
such a deep rabbit hole-Excitable Boy, Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner, the Envoy, My Shit's Fucked Up (written after he was diagnosed with cancer), Mohammed's Radio, so many......Warren was a great songwriter.
Love the song and movie. Brings back so many good memories. I was young and madly in love. My husband was quite a bit older than me and spent many years in London as an expat. We worked for the same company and our contracts had us in London frequently. He loved showing me where he lived in Mayfair and we spent time in all the places in the song. Groovy song and always brings a smile when I hear it.
Love anything that Warren did. I live just east of Youngstown Ohio so his tribute to Boom Boom was much appreciated here. You would be surprised how many people in this area never heard the song until I introduced them to it. Rest is Peace Warren and may God watch over and protect your family.
Zevon was a true artist. He wrote many great songs, not the least of which is Excitable Boy. That one will shock you into attention! But besides Werewolves of London and Accidentally Like a Martyr, I think my favourite might be Carmelita. Poignant and heart-wrenching ... and profoundly sad. Linda Ronstadt does an immaculate version of that song, and it just brings tears to your eyes. She actually covers several of his songs, and when an artist as special as Ronstadt recognizes your songwriting talent, you've gotta be pretty great!
Always loved this song. Such a great hook. I feel the producers of the film American Werewolf in London missed a great opportunity by not using it in the movie soundtrack.
@@Cynthia... They made use of Bad Moon Rising (Creedence Clearwater Revival), Moondance (Van Morrison), and Blue Moon (a couple of different versions), but not Warren Zevon’s song, although it came out 3 years before the movie. Maybe they just couldn’t get the copyright…
I got to see Warren Zevon perform at the Roxy theatre on the Sunset strip, in Hollywood. He passed away not to long after that. Loved his music. And he put on a great performance. I will never that show. A lot of artists covered his songs. Linda Rondstat did a great version of his song "Poor poor pitiful me" Another great song of his, "Accidentally like a martyr"
"His hair was perfect", hahahaha! Zevon was a trip! Sure do miss him! So many great songs. Love "Lawyers, Guns And Money". Check him out a little more. "Draw blood", hahahaha!
When I first heard this song I thought it was bizarre, but it actually grows on you. Jackson Browne said this song was about Werewolves preying on little old ladies in London. The musicality of this is very catchy with the piano 🎹 taking the spotlight. Great reaction. Thanks Harri and Domp Stomp. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Hey Harri. This man was an amazingly gifted artist! David Letterman's favorite musical artist, i believe. He was on the Letterman Show many times. Check out " Nightime in the Switching Yard" and "Roland the Headless Thompsom Gunner" from this same album, and " Desperadoes Under the Eaves". Slainte!!
You are my favorite reaction personality. I have been watching you for some time. I appreciate many types of music as you do. Your commentary is refreshing and honest. I am considerably older than you, being at the beginning of the rock era with Elvis, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and so forth. I have seen in person, Elvis, The Rolling Stones, The Righteous Brothers, Little Richard, and more. B.J. Thomas is worth a listen too. I saw him 4 times with my wife. She passed away four years ago and I still mourn. You are a breath of fresh air Harri. Bless you.
This is just a brief sampling of Mr. Zevon's work. He is one of the greatest songwriters of his generation. Warren's lyrics were like mini novels. Catchy melodies and some of the most beautiful love songs are part of his musical legacy. Please check out more of Warren Zevon's music.
Song began as a joke by Phil Everly (of the Everly Brothers) to Zevon in 1975, over two years before L.A. recording sessions for ["Werewolves"]. Everly had watched a television broadcast of the 1935 film Werewolf of London and "suggested to Zevon that he adapt the title for a song and dance hit or a disco hit." Zevon played with the idea with his band-member bassist and guitarist, who (all three) wrote (the lyrics and melody to) the song together in about 15 minutes. These were transcribed by Zevon's wife Crystal, however, none of them took the song seriously. "Lee Ho Fook" was a Chinese restaurant on 15 Gerrard Street in London's Chinatown, in the West End of London. Lon Chaney and his son Lon Jr. were (both) Hollywood horror (including "werewolf") film stars (in real life, the Queen Would NOT Have Been Amused). "BBC Radio 2" listeners rated this song as having the best opening line: "I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand". After Zevon's death in 2003, friend Jackson Browne had noted that he interpreted the song as describing an upper-class English womanizer: "It's about a really well-dressed, ladies' man -- a "werewolf", preying on little old ladies [as in a Mel Brooks comedy film "The Producers"] . In a way it's the Victorian nightmare, the gigolo thing."
Whenever people mention "alliteration" (phrases or sentences that contain words that start with the same sound) I can't help but song my favorite line "Little ol' lady got mutilated late last night". That is a GREAT sound.
Finally! Top tier songwriter covered by everybody, beautiful ballads, witty and eccentric lyrics, funky tunes too. So much to check out, don't pigeonhole him based on this one song!
I was a kid performer when this came out. We used to call all the agent/ managers/ back stage hanger on creepers werewolves. Guys who present well but are beasts and will destroy you.
