Warren Zevon Collection on Letterman, 1982-1993 + 2002 Recut

- Note: This is a re-edited version. I deleted Warren's performance of "Raspberry Beret" to avoid a certain copyright strike from the song's publisher, Universal Music Group.
Warren Zevon appeared on Late Night eight times. Here they all are, plus some Zevon-related clips. And bonus material at the end.
a. February 1, 1982. The January 30-February 5, 1982, edition of TV Guide had listed Warren among Dave's first guests on Late Night's premiere. But by Friday, January 29, his name had been omitted from the show's rehearsal log. I asked then-Head Writer Merrill Markoe if she had any memory why Warren hadn't appeared although earlier scheduled: "I think the show was already too full." So while Warren was listed in TV Guide, he had been bumped long after there was time for the magazine to revise its listing.
The clip here is from seven years later on Late Night, February 2, 1989. It was a current show and the second LN aired that evening (the 7th anniversary special had aired earlier in prime time but taped nine days earlier). Dave and Paul briefly talked about the 1982 debut show, and Dave, recalling that night's guests, mentioned that Warren "was supposed to be here but was not here."
b. August 2, 1982. Former major league pitcher Bill Lee talks about a song Warren wrote for him called, appropriately, "Bill Lee," which appears on Warren's 1980 LP, "Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School."
1. September 27, 1982. Warren's actual first appearance on Late Night. He performed "Excitable Boy," chatted with Dave for two segments, and then sang a second number, "The Overdraft."
2. July 17, 1987. Five years passed until Warren released a new LP and appeared again on Late Night. Here he performed "Boom Boom Mancini," then spent the next full segment chatting with Dave. (Note the band's bumper music after the performance.)
3. November 18, 1988. Warren sat in with the band throughout the show for the first time and also performed some of Elvis Presley's "Trouble" before segueing into "Lawyers, Guns and Money."
4. November 16, 1989. Warren again sat in with the band and then performed "Splendid Isolation." Then another chat with Dave.
5. November 28, 1990. Another show-length band sit-in, and a performance of "Raspberry Beret." - Update: Song deleted in order to avoid a copyright strike. Which is too bad; it was a great performance.
6. October 29, 1991. This time, Warren's pal Waddy Wachtel sat in with the band and then accompanied him in a performance of "Finishing Touches."
c. April 8, 1992. Dave announces his upcoming marriage to audience member Eileen and quotes a lyric from one of Warren's recent song releases. He'd cite it many times throughout the rest of his broadcasting career.
7. June 26, 1992. Warren's fourth band sit-in, plus a performance of "Searching for a Heart," which includes the lyric Dave had quoted two months earlier.
8. April 28, 1993. Warren's last Late Night appearance included his fifth band sit-in and a performance of ""Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner."
9. October 30, 2002. A bonus video: Warren's final appearance on Dave's Late Show. After a homebase chat where "Enjoy every sandwich" originated, Warren performed "Multineer," "Genius," and, for his finale, the same song he performed on his final appearance on Late Night nine years earlier, "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner."
After the show's taping, Warren gave Dave his guitar. He passed away on September 7, 2003.
"Dave's the best friend my music has ever had."

great article!! Brought a tear to my eyes!

That was a nice emotional article.
Dang. I cried after reading the article. I remember seeing Warren on his last show with Letterman. A sad deal. Enjoy every sandwich.
Dave: "What were you doing in Spain?"
Warren: "Singing country and western songs in an Irish bar."
This will remain one of my favorite exchanges in TV history.
I didn't know about Dave giving Warren a whole show when he was dying and stumbled into this video by accident. What a thing. What a thing.
Yeah , Dave was a real class act - we'll never see his like again - just look at the garbage we've got on late night TV now ! ! !
@@mikeyates7931 and now that Norm died… we have no comedians
@@ordinarypete very true
What about Pete Holmes. He is pretty good.
❤️ Dave.
I haven't had a good cry in a while, and i guess this is the trigger I been waiting for. Thank you for this, so much.
This collection is so great! Warren Zevon is incredible, and I miss him so much. He and Letterman are a perfect duo. RIP Warren.
Warren was amazing.I love the many appearances he did on the old LETTERMAN show I miss the eighties and I especially miss WARREN ZEVON R.I.P Warren the world is a fu#ked up place without you
Warren wrote Roland the headless Thompson Gunner when he was working @ a Club in Spain that was owned by an experienced Mercenary and is based on stories shared by the Owner who had fought all over the world!
Tru dat.
April 2020 and I am watching this for the tenth time. Thanks again. If I had the power to bring anyone back, it would be Warren Zevon and George Carlin.
Here, here! 👍😄✌😜
I would add Frank Zappa to that list.
@@goodun2974 Absolutely!
Also Tom Petty and Lowell George.
Add Robin Williams
Priceless stuff, Don! I saw Warren's "Apocalyptic Kingston Trio Tour" that he mentions at 36:00, when it played an intimate club on Portland's east side. Sat within spitting distance of Warren, bassist and backing vocalistTimothy B. Schmit (Poco, The Eagles) and guitarist Dan Dugmore (Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor) … three of my musical heroes. They pulled off the most brilliant song segue I've ever witnessed, going from an audience-confounding cover of Tom Jones' "What's New Pussycat" directly into those iconic guitar riffs of "Lawyers, Guns and Money." Will never forget it.

Thanks for posting this superb collection of Warren Zevon clips, needless to say, he's sadly missed.
Thank you, David Letterman
YOU have given me years of laughter, now Finally I have learned of Warren Zevon . My heart soares like an eagle after listening to him and his music.
It took me 55 years to discover Warren...talk about being cloaked
Is that you, Thaddeus?
I didn't hear of him until I was a late teen but I'm now 30 years old and still gaining more and more appreciation for Zevon. As a kid I liked his "fun" excitable boy stuff but now I find myself appreciating stuff like Carmalita and I Was In the House When the House Burned Down
I was introduced to Warren Zevon on Dave's show. I'm grateful for that.
The coolest musician/person to ever live. Such a shame that he left us so early, just think of how many more albums he could have produced. Fuck cancer.
But Warren did straighten out his life, and he went to many AA meetings, and for 17 years in a row he quit drinking. What a great musician and great songwriter.
And Neil young
Talented and unique musician for sure! But if you read his biography you’ll take back that “coolest person to ever live” statement 😆
@@BrandonHoyt yeah Warren could be a real dick to many people in his life
@@BrandonHoytvery true. I'll sleep when I'm dead.. Great book
this video makes the internet worthwhile
Thanks for the great compilation. I used to watch Dave on his morning show when I was in college. Yes, he had one. Didn't last long because he probably confused the housewives at home lol. Then I would record his CBS show every night on vhs and watch it the next morning. Continued to do that for a couple decades. I also used to listen to Warren cranked in the car in 1976. Got a stack of his lp's and cd's. I always go to him and John Hiatt when I want to hear some good, actually real REAL GOOD, intelligent music. His final album was tough to listen to, but just as honest and heartfelt and powerful as all his stuff, even though he must have been struggling mentally and physically.
This compilation reminds me of all the great music from Warren Zevon AND all the great music Dave showcased.
I loved watching Dave’s true love for Warren. Great stuff. Thanks for upload!
Thank you for your work putting this together. Great job. "Boom Boom" perfect performance. Can't watch whole video at one time, tears in my eyes won't let me. Thanks again.
Thanks! I wish I had felt confident enough to include Warren’s performance of “Raspberry Beret,” but after UMG struck down the two Prince performances on Late Show, I felt that caution was the best option.

Warren zvon excitable boy
Thank you for this great post..Just awesome, was lucky to see WZ a dozen times including talking with him a few times..sorely missed
Thanks for this. I've always known Zevon, but only recently really become a big fan. The final interview is so moving. Thanks again
Thanks for compiling this so well! Great video quality, too!
Warren Zevon once said, “David Letterman is the best friend my music ever had”.
Except for Jackson Brown...
Balling my eyes out watching this...what a loss! We r keeping you in our hearts forever Warren ❤
Thanks for my reminder to enjoy every sandwich.
I have thought about that quote often since I first saw that show
Warren will ALWAYS be my God Of Music. The first time, he was up for induction into the R&RHOF was this year-2023.
Frickin criminal. .he wasnt inducted. No goddam surprise.
I met him once in 1995. He was MINDBLOWING in person. Very kind. I fell madly in love with him...to be honest, I'd been a rabid fan for years..I'll adore him til I die.
Gods and Legends never die. ..AND WARREN ZEVON IS BOTH.❤❤❤❤
Stay the course. He's going to be recognised in his way. I feel it
Just an amazing compilation...and an amazing man. Miss him so much.
It was an amazing friendship to watch. There last show together was special.
Thank you for this. It is delightful. It might not be appropriate to get teary-eyed at work, but, there you go.
Man Dave really loved Warren you can see it you can feel it.
I've been listening to the Warren Zevon biography "Nothing's Bad Luck." I have been listening to the records and going through videos like this along the way. Thank you Don.
Thank you for making this Don. I visit this collection a few times a year.
Thank you so much for doing this. You've made my year in January. May you have a long and happy life enjoying every sandwich.
Amen .
@@mikeyates7931 Warren played Chattanooga once but I was too young to go. A few years later I played on the same stage many times. And every time I played that stage I made a little speech (I was/ am the bass player). "I've never been so proud to stand on the same stage as Warren Zevon". Then we'd play Lawyers or Splendid Isolation or My Shits Fucked Up. I'm still so incredibly proud to have walked the same boards as my hero. Enjoy every fucking sandwich!
@@JP-jb7ts that's so cool ! And absolutely right : Enjoy Every Sandwich , my friend ! ! !
Really appreciate this Don! I didn't discover David until my colicky baby kept me up all hours in 2/83. It was all over after that, Letterman was my new drug, lol. You've no idea how hard it was for me to hold my sleeping baby and simultaneously suppress my belly laughs from watching Letterman!! I would literally be crying I was laughing so hard! Dave made life bearable in those hard days/nights And later he was there for me during even more trying times. So I REALLY appreciate you!
You’re great for posting this
Thanks I used to rush home from work to record these bits on vhs, have them call but no way to play them anymore
“Excitable Boy” played on national television without a wince. The 80s.
and to promote The Envoy of all albums!
thanks for putting this together
What an incredible compilation! Thanks for making/uploading, and I hope this never falls afoul of the damn copyright bots.
I'm British and have never watched a full Letterman show, though I've known who he was for some time due to references made in shows like The Simpsons. Zevon is another story, I've been listening to his stuff for as long as I can remember, courtesy of my dad. I hope I get to show this compilation to my dad soon, he'll love it.
I myself am in love with the performance of Splendid Isolation in particular. It's a wonderful song, and Transverse City is an underrated album from an already massively underrated musician. Cheers!
Very well said. Appreciation goes out to you.
I would love to see a compilation of Warren's appearances on the show when he took Paul's place when Paul went to be with his father. There was a lot of chit chat/insightful banter between he and David as well some songs.
In time. Don’t ask when.
@@dongiller thank you so much ! "Monkey wash, donkey rinse"

I agree!
Thanks for putting this video together
Still brings a tear to my eye & joy also... RIP Warren
Thanks for the upload, Don. I was an *excitable boy* to receive this video notification 😉
Good one .
Beautifully curated; thanks so much.
Can't believe over 20 years now seemed like yesterday. Been a fan of Mr Zevon for 30+ years. I've watched this now 4 times. Miss this human with such unique style
Great compilation. Brought tears to my eyes.
Great last show!
David’s a boss.
Gave him the whole show and I’m sure helped pull in the support band (strings).
Even the song reorder worked along w selection! Roland was a perfect ender.
And warren’s humor was amazing that night too.
Thank you! Great collection
His last Album 1 before last song ‘Discourse in the House’ Warren was helped so greatly by Bruce Springsteens’ great guitarplay and song🎶🌻👌 His Last song here Warren sounds lovely like Bowie singing But above all himself🌹
RIP Musicmen Warren Zevon🌹🌷🌹👌🌞
I believe Warren Zevon was Dave's favorite musician
He had a relationship with him for 20 years so clearly, that's true. Dave's favorite since Warren Zevon was the Foo Fighters.
......if you exclude Paul Shaffer and Frank Stallone.
@@ihavefallenandicantreachmy2113 Sounds like a Norm MacDonald non-sequitor
@AlmostReady504
Dave also loved Lou Reed who was also on so many times, but they didn’t have conversations like he did with Warren. Dave had some great taste in music!
What a great collection. I remember watching the last appearance on Late Show and was very moved that Dave would dedicate an entire show to him.
I've been listening to all of Warren's music did not realize how prolific he was God rest his soul
I watched it then and was in awe of it all...history Mr. Z and Dave! What a way to say goodbye 👋 miss you both
You are the coolest! ;-)) Thank you!!!!
Yeah 'e is ; -D
I'd love to see more of the comradery of Zevon and Letterman. I'm curious about when he subbed for Paul. Would love to see a compilation of these appearances.
I remember the one where he came up with Licked By a Stranger.
@@lawrence142002 And “ Surfin and Shoplifting “ lololololol…now Warren that is song , write that! Lololololol
Like most of you (I hope) I've had a few mentors on this journey. One mentor once asked me if I listened to Warren Zevon because the writing assignments I turned in reminded her of him. At the time, the only Zevon song I knew was WEREWOLVES OF LONDON and that was because I was in love with Scorsese and Newman, and the first time I remember hearing it was the COLOR OF MONEY. I told her as such, and responded to her compliment with - I will "check him out." 25 years later, I could not be more honored. I think the man said everything I want to say in the way I want to say it, and there is nothing left to say or write. The fact that he had the relationship he did with one of my other mentors from afar (David Letterman) is serendipitous. I hope we all get to hang out sometime.
Thanks for this - wonderful
sooo glad to see you back
David Letterman absolutely loved Warren Zevon. He loved him.
I'm a lower levelm musician. I was aware somewhat of Warren Devon. Starting in the early 90s. I was involved in a annual benefit to help fund rehab centers and halfway houses in Louisville. One of my 3 sons was 6. The director ask one year. If I would learn a song called Carmelitta. Well, long story short. I cried with my son. When Warren Zevon died. He's 30 now. We love every sandwich
what did i just read
I was just wondering what the hell I was reading as well, kinda funny it was only 7 hours after you commented on this two year old post.
RIP Warren Zevon
I live in Louisville
The only honest love affair of the 20th century. Very nice video
I watched Dave from his day show and on. There was no better writer on his staff than him. I remember him on Carson in the 70s saying he used the glops if tooth paste from the wall of his sink. And, Ser them out as breath mints. But, even though he got stale the last 6 or 7 years. Having the best band in Night Show History never hurt.
Awesome tribute to Warren!
I recall a clip of Warren and Dave at a table with Warren's bottle of morphine right there, it must have nearer his death. But I remember being so moved by it. Wish I could find it!
Thanks soooooo !!!! much!!!!! good job!!!!! i miss him so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Warren is so badass a true artist
Fantastic thank you so much on a WZ bender perfect end
Hello Don, good to have you back, please don't scare us like that again. ;-)
At 6:10, Warren plays Excitable Boy, followed by an interview to about 17 minutes of running time. At 17:25, Warren plays "The Overdraft"
47:43 is my favorite part. Love that look on Warren's face
Goodness! Don Giller never stops amazing. This is a great compilation
Thanks!
Freaking awesome! Thanks
The legendary Warren Zevon
Still miss him After such a long long time...
Ack! I watched all of this, except for the Last Late Show appearance. I'm now reading his wikpedia. I may start bawling during this one, once I start watching it.
Yes , love , you will , but it's worth it ! ! !
Bill Lee. Thats back when honesty was in vogue
58:32 “Whats he serving ?” Paul is so damn quick. Freaking genius. 😂
Best guest Dave ever had !!No intelligent talk these days!
The more I learn about Warren the more I realize he's best when I'm in the mood for something really deep and dark. Bottom of the ocean stuff.
Awesome, thank you.
this is still the best thing, maybe the only thing that matters on the internet
..if I didnt know it was "Spaceman" Bill Lee talking, I'd swear it was Michael Keaton ! 😁
This is a lot of Dave to put up with, but in the end it's worth it for Warren.
Dang, dude, you must be an even bigger Z-man fan than I am .. How did you know about all these non-public details of his appearances? Excellent job!
That’s what I’m wondering. He’s able to pull clips from guests just talking about him. I’m guessing he pulls from the transcripts and cross searches “Warren Zevon” then finds clips from those episodes. Excellent work from OP. This is incredible.
Absolutely GREAT !!!!
Trying to imagine a green room with Warren Zevon and Buck Henry.
I wonder what Warren's widow did with his eyeglasses after he passed (unless he was buried in a pair?)? Always wanted a pair for myself like those he wore in the early '80s (i.e. the round ones with the light purple tint) but have never found any that looked just like them. Any idea where he got those glasses from, and what the name of the particular style was?
Used to be a big Letterman fan but soured on him in later years. However, the respect and genuine affection he showed Warren Zevon was pure class.
NEVER LIKED Letterman & his stammering schtick-But Respect how he treated WARREN … 😢
Like when he calls him David , so use to hearing Dave
Yea, you get the feeling, Dave really held his breath to get through the interview, before Mutineer. I like Bob Dylan’s rendition of this song. He did it on stage. The same day he heard the news. Respect from Dylan!
If u can’t take the punches , it don’t mean a thing
Bill Lee - spaceman.
On Zevon?
46:35 is one of the best bits I've seen from Dave and Paul
Paul and co. were a tight as hell band.
My favorite part (aside from David's obvious love of the artist) is whenever Paul Shaffer gets to play with Warren he is so f'"ing happy.
They knew he would amd will become the TRUE king of rock n' roll.
Paul Shaffer is a musical god. He’s loves playing, and dozens of the greats love playing with him in turn. Ronnie Wood plays a very similar role in the orbit of the rock solar system.
Dave channeled his old Late Night self for this show.
The crap on late night now is ridiculous!
A live performance of a copyrighted song is not a copyright violation, if I'm not mistaken. Not even if Prince had performed it.
UMG took down my two live Prince performances on Late Show last Friday morning, which caused me to lose this channel. I didn’t want to risk another takedown/strike from them.
If the publisher owns the song, they can choose what they like, regardless of who performs it.
At any rate, I’m not going to recut this again.
Yikes. I wouldn't want to risk challenging a soulless, undiscerning vortex like UMG either.
Oddly, the performance is still on youtube, posted by another channel 2 yrs ago.
just thank you . . warren . .
Love between two humans ❤️
Warren forget to mention that David Lindley also played on a couple cuts on the Sentimental Hygiene record.
I loved Dave from day one. He and Paul turned me on to Warren Zevon. Such a gift. Btw my first concert was The Blues Brothers at Red Rocks with Paul in ‘80 I think. Yeah I’m old but Belushi, Ackroyd and the band killed it. Dave is a true legend. His recent interview with Dave Chapelle was brilliant and moving. Keep crushing it Dave. We love you
Thank you
Love Zevon forever
