Just watched the American Masters show on Johnny again a few days ago. As someone who watched him from the 70's on, it actually made me emotional. He really was special and is still sorely missed!

Well, Dave didn't get divorced that one time when he lost his Malibu house that was close to Carson's. It was a property he and Merrill Markoe got when they were together and she was the head writer for both the morning Letterman Show and Late Night with David Letterman. After they broke up she left the show, moved back to LA and kept the house and their two dogs.
The interesting thing is that $1,000,000 is the amount Dave had in his contract as a penalty if he didn't get the Tonight Show. When this was taped, they already had their deal with Leno, so NBC was eventually going to have to pay Dave the million. Interesting bit of foreshadowing.

It was partially because of Carson that "Saturday Night Live" came to fruition. Prior to that, NBC had been showing "Best of Carson" reruns on weekends for a number of years. Some time in 1974, he wanted the weekend shows pulled, which resulted in a new weekend show being developed. This show, then called "NBC's Saturday Night", began in October 1975, and it's been on the air ever since.
I'm surprised that "James" Carrey never mentioned this on later interviews with Letterman. "Remenber the time I was supposed to do you show in 91, and I got bumped by JOHNNY CARSON!"

Johnny was so quick and subtle. Easily the #1 of Tonight/Late Night, and Dave is #2. Both are hilarious at regular conversation, but you can tell here Johnny is just a bit better at it. Sadly, nothing today even compares to these two. It's almost as if the very style of humor is extinct.

From Jan 2, 1967 to Sept 12, 1980 it was from 11:30 to 1 am Eastern. From Sept 15, 1980 to Aug 30 1991 the show was 11:30 to 12:30 then from Sept 2, 1991 to May 22, 1992 the show was 11:35 to 12:35. Before I looked this up there is a website called,Television Academy Interviews. It has hundreds of interviews. I have listened to Ed McMahon's more than once in the past. and I just went to his interview again and he said clearly it started New York time 11:15 where the show played from 1962 to 1972. On Carson's last show in May of 1992, one of his jokes was that G E had made him Employee of the Month.

I have listened to Ed McMahon's more than once in the past. and I just went to his interview again and he said clearly it started New York time 11:15 where the show played from 1962 to 1972. So I more than double checked my facts . I also watched Skitch Henderson's interview. He was the original music director before Doc Severinsen took over It's a great website.
If anybody doesn’t know, this was the day that Johnny Carson first announced his retirement date at an NBC upfront earlier that day.
Not only that, exactly one year from this day was the first day Carson woke up no longer the host of the Tonight Show.

This may have been the last year the U S was normal, since then it's gotten much different. The young people now are Very difficult to deal with and understand and the past or how things used to be doesn't matter to them at all and they couldn't care less about it either!
