It was a property he and Merrill Markoe got when they were together and she was the head writer for both the morning Letterman Show and Late Night with David Letterman. After they broke up she left the show, moved back to LA and kept the house and their two dogs.

    The interesting thing is that $1,000,000 is the amount Dave had in his contract as a penalty if he didn't get the Tonight Show. When this was taped, they already had their deal with Leno, so NBC was eventually going to have to pay Dave the million. Interesting bit of foreshadowing.

    It was partially because of Carson that "Saturday Night Live" came to fruition. Prior to that, NBC had been showing "Best of Carson" reruns on weekends for a number of years. Some time in 1974, he wanted the weekend shows pulled, which resulted in a new weekend show being developed. This show, then called "NBC's Saturday Night", began in October 1975, and it's been on the air ever since.

      Both 6A and 6B are actually very small studios compared to the vast studios NBC had in Burbank. I am amazed how they got to squeeze those audience based studios into 30 Rock.

    I learnt from Peter Lassally, former associate producer of Carson's Tonight Show, if you were friends with Johnny, had Johnny's backing and support, you were set for life. Once you lost his support, your career died. Joan Rivers knew this all too well. Just look at how her career tanked after her 1986 move to Fox without informing Carson beforehand, she gave him no notice, only phoned him on the day of the Fox announcement.

    • @JoseMorales-lw5nt
      @JoseMorales-lw5nt 3 года назад +1

      QUITE TRUE! Story goes that Johnny was grooming Joan to be his heir apparent during the mid-80's. He always had a set of celebrities who filled in for him on occasion. But he truly loved Joan. Remember, she got her start as a staff writer on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW. So having the double blessing of being connected to Ed and loved by Johnny would have been the ultimate goal for any celebrity. Sadly, her impatient ways got the better of her. Thinking it was taking too long for Johnny to finalize his retirement, Joan saw the fledgling FOX Network as a way to go on her own. We all know how that turned out....

      @@mwilliamshs Well I just googled the Tonight Show. Johnny inherited the show from Jack Paar starting October 1, 1962. Monday thru Friday EASTERN from 11:15 to 1 am. These hours lasted from Oct 1, 1962 till December 30, 1966.
      Between February 1965 and Dec 1966, Ed McMahon and Skitch Henderson took the first 15 minutes and Johnny came on at 11:30. From Jan 2, 1967 to Sept 12, 1980 it was from 11:30 to 1 am Eastern. From Sept 15, 1980 to Aug 30 1991 the show was 11:30 to 12:30 then
      from Sept 2, 1991 to May 22, 1992 the show was 11:35 to 12:35.
      Before I looked this up there is a website
      called,Television Academy Interviews. It has hundreds of interviews. I have listened to Ed McMahon's more than once in the past. and I just went to his interview again and he said clearly it started New York time 11:15 where the show played from 1962 to 1972. So I more than double checked my facts . I also watched Skitch Henderson's interview. He was the original music director before Doc Severinsen took over It's a great website.
