When I was 10 yrs old (1962), through the Boy's Club, I was selected to appear on Johnny's TV show "Who Do You Trust" as the bubblegum bubble blowing champion. 3 things happened I will never forget - I blew a humongous bubble that burst in my face, Johnny gave me the answe(off camera) to his quiz question & I received a check for $75. about a week later. Now at 67, it's still a heartwarming & treasured chapter in my life. Johnny was one of the special ones !
This is when Dave was hilarious , before he got all political towards the end. Also Johnny would've never went on Leno's show after he took over the tonight show , he was also writing joke's for Letterman's monologue's occasionally after he retired....
Carson had his personal flaws, like we all do, but he was the best talk show host ever. He was a great listener, a great conversationalist, and a great comic.
One of the last things Johnny ever said on David Letterman's show via the phone from his Malibu home was when California was having forest fires, (paraphrasing) "The weather is really nice out here today, the mud slides are putting out the forest fires." With that David put the phone down and laughed like crazy. Johnny hadn't been on the air for nearly two years but hadn't missed a beat in his comedic timing. Rest In Peace, Johnny, and thanks for all those laughs. 😄 🕯

Only then did a whole bunch show up for a time. Some good, some not. Arsenio Hall was good. Pat Sajak not so much. There were others as well. Most did not last long. Nobody since Johnny did what he did...#1 for more than twenty straight years.

I really, really miss that man. What a legend. There will never be another as great as Carson. It is truly amazing the power he had in Hollywood, at one point The Tonight Show made 11% of the profits at NBC.

Just looked up some background. Johnny joined the Navy June 1943 and after training went into active duty right at the end of WWII. He had the sobering task of removing the remains of 20 men killed on his ship after a torpedo attack. Those kind of experiences can keep you humble.
You would never know or understand the sacrifices these brave men did, so don’t try to describe what they experienced, speak of it yes but not on their behalf when you have absolutely no clue.

I feel lucky to be old enough to have grown up with Carson but young enough to appreciate Letterman--my college dorm mates would gather in the TV room to watch Letterman every night. Their relationship was unique too--Carson rarely appeared on other interview shows, but he did Letterman's show several times, even after he retired and Letterman left NBC for his own 11:30 show on CBS --the best thing that could've happened for Letterman, IMO. Now, looking back, it's hard to imagine that it mattered who took Johnny's spot bc the truth is, NOBODY could take Johnny's spot and David was smart enough and funny enough to create his own memorable space on late night television. Btw, love the little wink Johnny gives Dave just before he leaves.

Elements of directing, lighting, sound, the story line, the relationship between characters, emotions, and other subtle things, that as a much younger person, I had no interest in because I had no awareness of them in my youth or past decades. Watching recordings of your favorite old TV shows and movies of your youth, or of past years will not only allow you to linger in the memory of that simpler time, but it will also enlighten you about who you are now, and what you know now, that you didn't know in younger days. It's a wonderful way of revisiting your youth, while becoming acquainted with yourself in present day. Truly a kind of mirror into the past as well as the present. Believe me, you will really enjoy this, and as years go on, you can continue to revisit your past through the decades and realize who you are now, through watching these recordings.

Two of the greats. Their chemistry here is beautiful. " I think he is saying say goodbye, he's doing one of these". (hand motion) A hand motion only Carson would know.
Dave was just starting out. He was so different from Carson but they were both always so likeable and funny in their own ways. Carson was hilarious on this appearance.
This is one of my all time favorite episodes of Letterman. I used to have this on a VHS tape way back in the 80's, with a couple of other favorites. I wish I could remember all the bits, but I definitely remember that Eddie sat in with the band. I just remember that it was a hysterical episode, top to bottom. Thanks, Don!
I was around 10th grade around this year and i had my first little 2nd hand tv where i could watch whatever i wanted and i discovered Letterman show and thought it was the most hilarious stuff. He always did absurd skits that no one else but the classic SNL crew did, and always had interesting things going on with "on the street" bits and dropping things off 10 story bldg. and the music guests were great and was just super funny program for years and i still have a lot of nostalgia for it as nothing Ive ever seen since has ever matched it in its prime as it just had so many aspects to it that were unexpected and unique.
But don’t be sad Carla, we are blessed with so much of old TV and music preserved and easily accessible on RUclips and other platforms. And you can watch it over and over and over again. Enjoy!
Johnny said he hadn't been a guest on any show in a long time. At 5am July 27 I see this 1st time..Awesome!.. & vaguely remember him stopping by the Dinah Shore show in ...1978? On 5 days a week late afternoons on old broadcast tv. Some1 find THAT! History Guy maybe?

I loved Dave beginning to end and still even with the crazy beard. I don't think he was bitter at all. He was very emotional after his heart surgery and remained friends with some of his friends and nurses. He was very emotional after 9/11 and all the loss and tragedy from that. His final show he was very emotional about how much his friendship with the Foo Fighters meant to him. I don't see the bitterness, but then I have always liked Dave a whole lot. His show was a big part of my high school and college years.
I had never seen this footage before. Someone in the comments mentioned Letterman looked really nervous.....upon his entrance, I thought Johnny Carson appeared about as nervous & uncomfortable in this setting as I can ever remember. The bit where he called Letterman's "mother" was great. Johnny was (as far as I am concerned) the one & only when it came to late night television hosting. There really was no one superlative to describe him.
Always great to see the Carson Letterman together. This is real TV and genuine. And of course Paul Schaffer and his band , Great Original Sound music. They will live in fond memories forever , I promise you !

You can't teach that quick wit... That spontaneity... That stream-of-consciousness type of banter that both those guys were capable of. You got to have it to go live. And both of them had a lot of it.

And Mrs OHara said oh my poor husband he never had a chance. And the guy says I don't know about that. He got out three times to go to the bathroom.

Dave was just starting out. He was so different from Carson but they were both always so likeable and funny in their own ways. Carson was hilarious on this appearance.
This is one of my all time favorite episodes of Letterman. I used to have this on a VHS tape way back in the 80's, with a couple of other favorites. I wish I could remember all the bits, but I definitely remember that Eddie sat in with the band. I just remember that it was a hysterical episode, top to bottom. Thanks, Don!
I was around 10th grade around this year and i had my first little 2nd hand tv where i could watch whatever i wanted and i discovered Letterman show and thought it was the most hilarious stuff. He always did absurd skits that no one else but the classic SNL crew did, and always had interesting things going on with "on the street" bits and dropping things off 10 story bldg. and the music guests were great and was just super funny program for years and i still have a lot of nostalgia for it as nothing Ive ever seen since has ever matched it in its prime as it just had so many aspects to it that were unexpected and unique.

Johnny said he hadn't been a guest on any show in a long time. At 5am July 27 I see this 1st time..Awesome!.. & vaguely remember him stopping by the Dinah Shore show in ...1978? On 5 days a week late afternoons on old broadcast tv. Some1 find THAT! History Guy maybe?

Liked old Dave..he was funny in early 80's...he became bitter later in his career.
I loved Dave beginning to end and still even with the crazy beard. I don't think he was bitter at all. He was very emotional after his heart surgery and remained friends with some of his friends and nurses. He was very emotional after 9/11 and all the loss and tragedy from that. His final show he was very emotional about how much his friendship with the Foo Fighters meant to him. I don't see the bitterness, but then I have always liked Dave a whole lot. His show was a big part of my high school and college years.

I had never seen this footage before. Someone in the comments mentioned Letterman looked really nervous.....upon his entrance, I thought Johnny Carson appeared about as nervous & uncomfortable in this setting as I can ever remember. The bit where he called Letterman's "mother" was great. Johnny was (as far as I am concerned) the one & only when it came to late night television hosting. There really was no one superlative to describe him.
We still miss you Johnny!

I've never seen Johnny give an interview before & Dave was only in his 3rd year, he was clearly uncomfortable & intimidated.
It's really cool to see how much Johnny enjoyed to laugh & how well Dave carried himself, even when he felt intimidated.
