We need Johnny back. He is sorely missed. I haven’t seen a late shoe since he’s been gone. Well, maybe a couple of Letterman, but not the whole show. The rest of the guys are a waste of time. No vulgarity, but that was the network's doing. Johnny and others did push the envelope. Part of his appeal was his sort of...I guess sophisticated naughtiness is the word.
in about '76 a stand up male comedian did a routine- "excuses that wives use for not having sex" each one was the name of a race horse, and he did it in the voice of a "horse race announcer" all i remember was "i have a headache is third..."i heard the whole audience gasp for air- just to bust out laughing- even harder. he left- johnny was wiping his eyes- he just motioned for them to go to commercial, and when the ads were over , johnny was still holding the rag to his face! would love to know WHO that was, and get a copy of that routine!
There is so much in this Rich Little appearance that illustrates the greatness of Carson's Tonight Show and of Carson himself as host. He is far and away the best person ever to do this type of thing. He is very knowing and sophisticated and assured and charming, but still has the energy and fun of the wise cracking kid at the back of the class in high school. @13:35 I love how Carson cracks up, sneaks a drag of his cigarette and then is just in complete awe of what Rich Little is doing. True admiration of a comedic genius, FROM a comedic genius.
Yep I agree, and people keep saying Johnny hated when Rich little imitated him but you can tell that's not accurate. Johnny didn't like people really from my understanding, but when on TV you were funny, interesting or on point he honestly responded, no fakery or putting on airs. So I'm not convinced at all he disliked little, he literally giggles like a boy at this time you referenced and also when introducing him he respects him and says he envied his talent and humbled himself that little was the best at doing boghart.
Wow, it was a different country back then. I was 11 or 12 when this show aired and I remember those days. People had so much more class and intelligence.
wb6162 .....True. It's so weird that evolution implies 'progress' of the human race. Now its normal for people to shoot at other people while driving. I guess that's progress from just honking at a stupid driver. Many more examples too....
wb6162... your assessment 100% correct: people more intelligent. Why? They hadn't as many years of being Common Core-d... socialism inculcated by our U.S. Dept. of Mis-Education. Pray for our Nation
bagerra\\\\ interject and NOT interrupt , what a GREAT OBSERVATION from your part , i will use it wisely in ALL my conversations no doubt...thanks. these days most people don't listen , only thinking about what THEY will say in order to interrupt , making it a sad communication between two human beings....ahh the old days where RESPECT had a huge part in all ways of life.
No pedantry here. The commenter pointed out one of Johnny's greatest interviewing talents. Some say he was nasty when in his cups. Funny how that happens.
LoveFlatfootin1, Agreed - back then we called it "Johnny" show I saw him/her on Johnny. so many Hollywood greats have passed on that were on during Mr. Carson time hosting and he and Ed McMahon being gone for few years television is such a different place, I enjoy nostalgia in the good old days watch a lot of old material like this myself.
In high school in the early 80's i would watch when i could by myself... It was homey and comforting late at night... Kinda like Bob Barker/Monte Hall and Merv Griffen when i was home sick from school..it was company.✌
sjtom57 nbc fucked up when they made the host go from. An all round talented entertainer to a basic comic. I feel conan is the closest to johnny out of all of them.
One of, if not the best impersonator ever along with Carson's laugh. What an interview. If you don't laugh at this, then I don't know how much funnier it could be. I was alive during the Watergate hearings. I also watched them. What an embarrassment for Nixon. The breakin was totally unessessary.
Johnny was such a good host, I took it for granted him being on every night. Miss those times when life was simpler and stars were not pushing an agenda.
You never knew Johnny's politics. He intentionally avoided bringing his views into his show. Friends said he was most likely a Republican but he was anti war, pro abortion rights, etc., which to me gives him some libertarian leanings.
@@BobInKC1 He had no choice. The censors would have taken him off the air if he'd expressed a political opinion. That's what they did to the Smothers Brothers.
Or Joan Rivers or David Brenner or Joey Bishop or John Davidson or Bob Newhart or.... dunno, it seemed he had a guest host as often as not in the later years.
That Bogart impression at the end, that is so spot on. That dedication and skill to remember those lines and mannerisms so well takes time. Never seen this clip before. Thanks so much.
@@mitchsherwood822 Great movie. And in Colour. Some good copies ( either of the top 2 on the list ) are worth downloading from Pirate Bay. And of course free as well.
I'll never forget the time Rich Little hosted the show and did his impression of Johnny the entire night! He never once broke character. It was damned impressive from the greatest impressionist ever. I think his favorite character to do was Johnny. I also think Rich doing Johnny was Carson's least favorite character. It was because despite all of his success Johnny was still a little boy from Nebraska and a tiny bit insecure. It's why Johnny rarely sang, even though he was actually quite good at it.
@@penelopelopez8296 That's not surprising. He valued his privacy and saw that as an invasion of it. Another reason was because Johnny always wanted the show to be about the guests. Johnny also rarely talked to the guests before the show. He relied on his staff to talk to them and give him a list of questions and topics to talk about.
@@penelopelopez8296 Not to mention that Little was banned from ever appearing on the Tonight Show. I wonder what would've happened if those who had been banned from The Tonight Show had barged onto the set despite the ban?
Johnny Carson , in retrospect, had the best voice as an interviewer or for anything else. I don't think people really appreciate how special that tenor/bass voice was, and I haven't heard anything close since.
Not only will there never be another show LIKE Carson's Tonight Show and the variety of talent he had on, the ART of Entertaining an Audience and the Guests is lost. It is sad that we CAN'T look forward to real late night entertainment anymore.
Now It isn't PC to be funny. You can't even tell a joke without someone saying their feelings are hurt or whatever. I guess that isn't allowed anymore. The left is killing comedy. Yeah, I said it.
There still weren't many mutiple-TV households yet, but a lot of folks had TVs on wheels, and could roll the set into the bedroom to watch Carson in bed.
Oh man, that was gold. Rich Little isn't just great at finding the voice stylings and inflection of the characters but his comedy writing itself is very funny. The deadpan washing machine routine was priceless.
I guess one of the few advantages of being a "certain age" is actually knowing of the people they are discussing involved in Watergate. I guess the comedy is somewhat meaningless for someone who isn't old enough to remember.
It's bad enough that many "younger" people don't know who or what Watergate was about, mostly, it seems, is because it isn't taught in school anymore beyond a quick one week mention. This is the history of the USA, something that affected every person in the country in some way (even today, decades later).
I heard Johnny Carson best described this way. The reason he was so successful is because he always made his guests look good. It's an art to be both host and fan and he did it impeccably.
@HappyComfort Was watching a few earlier episodes of this show and, back in the day, everyone on the talk shows seemed to smoke. Including the host. Rather blatantly. In fact, just watched Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin on with Joey Bishop filling in as Johnny's guest host, and all three were smoking, and there was a very large ashtray sitting on the Tonight Show desk. Interestingly, it was an old enough episode that not only featured Ed McMahon hawking Budweiser Beer, and Joey plugging Vicks Formula 44 Cough Syrup, but there was also an old commercial for L&M cigarettes, with the guy lighting up a cigarette and enjoying it, promptly followed by a commercial for Lavoris mouth wash. The times certainly have changed. I imagine the network was trying to get the smoking off the air by this episode of the show but Johnny was a long-time smoker and he would sneak smokes from time to time in later transitional episodes before they banned cigarette advertisements from television entirely and made smoking indoors illegal in California.
Back then what was so cool was that there was only 7 channels to watch and really only 4 were watched regularly by most everyone.yes not a major selection of different variety of shows but the whole country was connected and were on the same page .You had to be the I guess to understand how neat and special that is and was.i miss all the people on my family that was alive then '! Especially my mom!
Gee Ess my mother always told me, if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say ANYTHING at all!!!!! Oh, wher were you when these beatings were going on?????
So very very. Love watching Johnny and Rich was a gem! Love the James Stewart impression and he is spot on with Johnny and Nixon as well as Ed Sullivan.Johnny is great as well. As a star, Johnny could make each night shine with his keen since of humor his hilarious acts and the greatest stars to ever walk the stage. That’s show business. Thanks for entertaining me as well as my parents. Those really were the days. 😊✌️💜🌹
This brings back so many memories. How many people has Rich Little impersonated that are no longer here like George Burns, Jack Benny just to mention a few? It had to feel real weird to Johnny Carson to have someone impersonate him and do a fantastic job why he watches. I would think it would just blow his mind.
There are millions of potential audience members out here who don't watch any late night talk shows. As for the ones who do, and the kids out there, a lot of them would develop better taste if they could see it. It used to be that the networks and celebrities understood they were given a privilege, and thus had a responsibility to use it well, the power and intimacy of being on television and in our homes all day. Now, the greedy low-lifes pander to the lowest common denominator, be it sleaze or anger or other cheap emotion, just to make some fast money. The problem is not just, for example, Fallon: it's the people who hire and fund Fallon instead of someone even just a notch or two better.
Back then we didn't have tv with people talking about themselves, and attacking people who don't agree with them. People were more educated, and not by brainwashing like the liberal schools do now.
Sorry.above mistake.Yeah I remember seeing this first run.My brother and I stayed up late. On a school night.Eager to see Rich Little. How intrigued we were by this talent. No no one does impressions now.Just because there is no one great enough to mimic. Kinda sad..when you think on it...
This is hilarious.!! The man is a genius. I love it when he does Senator Baker. It's spot on. But then he's spot on all the time with everyone. He's a legend in his own time. His Jimmy Stewart is perfect. Love you Rich.! ❤
Boy times sure have changed. Yes, the wardrobes are funny to look at- the talent pool, @ that time was taken for granted- and now sorely missed, and then there's Johnny stealing drags from his cigarette behind the desk. I wonder in 40+ years if we'll be looking back at Fallon, Colbert, etc...

I watched this show as far back as 1970, when I was age 9, during summers.I wasn't allowed to stay up that late on school nights.I liked Rich Little, and he did voices of a lot of famous movie stars of them 1930s-1960s, because those people had their own voice sound. Now days so many TV and movie stars sound alike.Johnny Carson was a classic, his show is on Antenna TV channel, weeknights.I saw one episode from 1972!
After I logged in to youtube today I couldn't believe this video was recommended. I haven't thought about Rich Little in years. What a classic. I grew up watching the man and still enjoy seeing this.
I thought it funny when Rich said "the kids don't get a lot of the people I do." In 1973, I would've been one of the kids and I knew about 75% of the people he impersonated.
Little is very good, Carson is a wonderful interviewer here - I'm beginning to get the cult of Carson subscribed to by Letterman et all - still very watchable 45 years later.

His impressions of former President Richard Nixon was so good I can hear it in my head today!,..... "I am the President! Let me m ake this Crystal Clear!
@Jeepman89 It was also said that Carson banned Little from The Tonight Show.
Those were the days . . . 16 minutes of non-stop laughs and not even a hint at a 4-letter word. The talent in those two men was off the charts.

And they didn't need vulgarity to get their point across.
wb6162... your assessment 100% correct: people more intelligent. Why? They hadn't as many years of being Common Core-d... socialism inculcated by our U.S. Dept. of Mis-Education. Pray for our Nation
Yes they did
Johnny knew how to interject, not interrupt. Thanks for the video!
Bageera Sixtythree:
"... interject nor interrupt." 👍
Did they call you Wagner the Pedant in school?
bagerra\\\\ interject and NOT interrupt , what a GREAT OBSERVATION from your part , i will use it wisely in ALL my conversations no doubt...thanks. these days most people don't listen , only thinking about what THEY will say in order to interrupt , making it a sad communication between two human beings....ahh the old days where RESPECT had a huge part in all ways of life.
Amen - I hate it when people interrupt, like they have to dominate the conversation. I wasn't taught that way.
No pedantry here. The commenter pointed out one of Johnny's greatest interviewing talents. Some say he was nasty when in his cups. Funny how that happens.
Life was so grand when we could look forward to watching Johnny Carson's show every night.
I'm unsubscribing. Complete idiot!!
LoveFlatfootin1... & we did, from time I was in elementary, & waited for the National Anthem.
I AGREE!!!!!!!!!HIS GUESTS ARE FUNNY AND GREAT ENTERTAINMENT.
There went my homework...
No one has even come close to replacing Johnny Carson! He was and always will be the King of late night TV!!
In high school in the early 80's i would watch when i could by myself... It was homey and comforting late at night... Kinda like Bob Barker/Monte Hall and Merv Griffen when i was home sick from school..it was company.✌
This is one of the best Carson interviews ever. Rich is hilarious
Genuine Talent
Late night has never been the same without Johnny. Not even close.
sjtom57 The only one that even comes close was The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
sjtom57 nbc fucked up when they made the host go from. An all round talented entertainer to a basic comic.
I feel conan is the closest to johnny out of all of them.
Ain't that the truth! Never be another Johnny Carson. He was the perfect host.
WKRP
I agree. Johnny was the best.
I admire many impressionists but Rich is still the best.
I used to watch Johnny. Forget how resonating that voice is/was. Boy I miss that style of late night show.
Jeff Heck iiii
So true. Nowadays they always have some stupid political agenda they try to force people to believe. Wish Johnny could be reincarnated.
Agree.
Agreed. But what movie was that from?
@@Tubetopfan1 The Caine Mutiny (1954)

@@mitchsherwood822 Great movie. And in Colour. Some good copies ( either of the top 2 on the list ) are worth downloading from Pirate Bay. And of course free as well.
This was the golden age of television, and we didn't even have cable.
Remember the "fine tune" button?
@@billolsen4360 I remember the "fine tune" button as well as, brightness, contrast and the color buttons.
That's right!
Blast from the past!!! How about the UHF channels? Couple of extra ones with the rotary tuning.
@Fred Jaminson Why are you watching tv clips then, Mr. Sunshine?
I'll never forget the time Rich Little hosted the show and did his impression of Johnny the entire night! He never once broke character. It was damned impressive from the greatest impressionist ever. I think his favorite character to do was Johnny.
I also think Rich doing Johnny was Carson's least favorite character.
It was because despite all of his success Johnny was still a little boy from Nebraska and a tiny bit insecure. It's why Johnny rarely sang, even though he was actually quite good at it.
That would be great for a rerun! Those were the days.
I read that Johnny never spoke to Rich Little ever again after he did that.
@@penelopelopez8296 That's not surprising. He valued his privacy and saw that as an invasion of it.
Another reason was because Johnny always wanted the show to be about the guests.
Johnny also rarely talked to the guests before the show. He relied on his staff to talk to them and give him a list of questions and topics to talk about.
lĺ
@@penelopelopez8296 Not to mention that Little was banned from ever appearing on the Tonight Show. I wonder what would've happened if those who had been banned from The Tonight Show had barged onto the set despite the ban?
I was 10 years old when this ran....now I'm 59.......how time Flies !!!!!!!!
Hi, I was 5 when this aired. Yep, time flies!
Never again will there ever be a talk show like Johnny's ever again.
timtaylor2001 00 00pm
@Fred Jaminson simpleton alert!
So proud to be from the same city as Rich Little...Ottawa, Canada!
This 2020 times stink, the 70s were gold I loved Carson and all the guests, simpler times no Covid no riots civil unrest just good clean entertainment
This is wonderful. Thank you.
Thanks for posting this. Priceless, we used to stay up late fridays to watch Johnny. Great stuff!!!
There still weren't many mutiple-TV households yet, but a lot of folks had TVs on wheels, and could roll the set into the bedroom to watch Carson in bed.
Great to see Rich Little on the Mike Huckabee show recently and he’s as brilliant as ever
Rich Little has always been an amazing talent. And no one will ever compare to Johnny Carson, the king of American TV.
Saw Rich little live this year. Still has it.
His bogart is just uncanny.
Impeccable...
BartholomewSmutz: are you a dinosaur?
Brontosaurus here.
I
Little's impression of Bogart as Captain Queeg is absolutely brilliant
I heard Johnny Carson best described this way. The reason he was so successful is because he always made his guests look good. It's an art to be both host and fan and he did it impeccably.
Jimmy Stewart dead on :-)
unrivaled
Absolutely perfect.
Close your Eyes and you absolutely believe Jimmy Stewart is Talking!
Funny seeing Johnny trying to sneak in that drag on his cigarette....haha...so busted!
@HappyComfort
Was watching a few earlier episodes of this show and, back in the day, everyone on the talk shows seemed to smoke.
I miss throws day's. Johnny was the best as well as his guest's.

A REAL LIVING LEGEND, RICH LITTLE ! ------------------MJL, 76 Y/O
Man...back when Hollywood had some CLASS to go along with all that talent! These days they have neither.
Gee Ess now it’s just bad talent and semoRATS!!!!
Johnny Carson was beating his wife while drunk in those days. You call that classier than today?
Gee Ess my mother always told me, if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say ANYTHING at all!!!!! Oh, wher were you when these beatings were going on?????
Class like Carson being a racist? Impressive.
Is that why Carson rarely had Black comics or actors on his show? Common sense?
So very very. Love watching Johnny and Rich was a gem! Love the James Stewart impression and he is spot on with Johnny and Nixon as well as Ed Sullivan.Johnny is great as well. As a star, Johnny could make each night shine with his keen since of humor his hilarious acts and the greatest stars to ever walk the stage. That’s show business. Thanks for entertaining me as well as my parents. Those really were the days. 😊✌️💜🌹
I was lucky to grow up watching all these real entertainers of the 60's/70's.
This brings back so many memories. How many people has Rich Little impersonated that are no longer here like George Burns, Jack Benny just to mention a few? It had to feel real weird to Johnny Carson to have someone impersonate him and do a fantastic job why he watches. I would think it would just blow his mind.
Carson has too much class for today's audience.
Al LaPointe: Carson didn't know he ought to have grabbed his crotch, spit on our Flag, then pFart in the microphone. Now Thatz entertainment !!
Amen"" All we have now on Late Night is Pink " Baby Liberal's --UGH!
Never thought about it that way, but you're right.
Wouch
Remember the old days? Before things changed? Things were better...before they changed.
Better TV? Better telephone service? Better safeguards our food and water? Better music? Better....? Better for whom?
Most assuredly Better TV before we had 1000+ channels and not one single thing to watch except reality tv. Better Quality without HD that is.
Back then we didn't have tv with people talking about themselves, and attacking people who don't agree with them. People were more educated, and not by brainwashing like the liberal schools do now.
Ian Washburn: you mean B4 what DemokRatz morphed N2: the communist, socialist, Global-ists they are?.

Rich Little once played Johnny Carson in a TV movie called The Late Shift.
Back when late night had class and was worth watching.
Wow this really brought it all back, I remember laughing out loud as a little kid watching Rich on tv hahahahaha HE IS ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS HAHAHAHAHA
We saw Rich a few years ago in Vegas. Small crowd then but he was as great as ever.
The Bogart routine was from the movie The Caine Mutiny. He did it perfectly!

Only with disdain perhaps 🤔

I watched this show as far back as 1970, when I was age 9, during summers.I wasn't allowed to stay up that late on school nights.I liked Rich Little, and he did voices of a lot of famous movie stars of them 1930s-1960s, because those people had their own voice sound. Now days so many TV and movie stars sound alike.Johnny Carson was a classic, his show is on Antenna TV channel, weeknights.I saw one episode from 1972!
Carson and Little top of their game...1973, shag carpet....glad I was around to experience it.

I thought it funny when Rich said "the kids don't get a lot of the people I do." In 1973, I would've been one of the kids and I knew about 75% of the people he impersonated.
Your point is.?
Little is very good, Carson is a wonderful interviewer here - I'm beginning to get the cult of Carson subscribed to by Letterman et all - still very watchable 45 years later.
Indieshack Yeah it was fun growing up watching Johnny. I remember being ten in '64, and being allowed to watch the show on Friday nights only unless there was a very special guest on my folks would let us stay up for. Sinatra did the show when we were kids! Can't match that today

Ah the good old days. Such class.
Rich Little was definitely one of the best impressionists of our generation.
