Johnny Carson, was by far the best night show host. I watched him pretty much every single night. May he rest in peace. Today's date is April 23rd 2022.
Carson was no doubt the best and he set the bar high. I was 26 when he retired and it’s true there was a stretch when you couldn’t go anywhere without someone saying did you see Carson last night, but I noticed later I couldn’t go to bed without watching Letterman. He was a mainstay for 33 years. I loved that show when all the pencils came down. The tonight show and the late late show 63 years 2 people that’s insane.
He was kind of my english teacher, every night for the years I watched american TV in Seoul Korea. Even if I could not understand all, I just felt ' this is a good man, and he gives joy and love'. He made each of my evening great. Thank you Mr Carson.
There will never be another Johnny, and if you weren't there, words can't describe exactly the stature of the man and his influence on show business. Nobody will ever be what he was. No one could touch Johnny, but he couldn't have been more gracious. Bravo, Dave. You did him well here.
There is no question about there will never be a late night show like The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, just like there will never be another Beatles. I would not give a million dollars to have missed these magnificent events in my life!!!
Its now 2022 There's not a nighttime show that can beat Jonny Carson. He stayed out of politics that made him the MAN We could watch him and laugh forget about all bad going on
Johnny was my childhood in a nutshell during the 1980s when my dad let me stop up to watch The Tonight Show with him. Unforgettable entertainment. Interviewing all those legendary stars of stage and screen while slowly becoming one himself by the 1970s. There will never be another Carson. Continue RIP Johnny.
Wonderful tribute by Letterman. I grew up watching the last 10 years of Carson, no one ever held a a candle to his natural talent and gift. So glad I can watch old reruns occasionally.
*watching all those current hosts grimace* Someone earlier replied, here, "I feel sorry for the generation that didn't know Johnny Carson." Make that 'generations', now. Shame what TV has become. Just remember John. And smile.
I grew up in the 70's and 80's. And I remember Carson vividly. And Letterman when he was on NBC. Worth staying up for, even when I was 12. This one brought tears to my eyes.
I was a young lad of 10 when Carson debuted on the Tonight Show. My parents would only let me stay up to watch him on Friday nights. Over the years, I rarely missed his show and with the advent of VCRs, I would record each one. I still watch reruns here on RUclips and I thank God for the technology that allows me to watch and love him all over again.
Johnny Carson paved the way for many different comedians and actors in Hollywood and pretty much around the world as well. I have very fond memories as a young boy, watching his show my parents and distant relatives also have fond memories of him growing up and throughout their adulthood as well. I really respected him for everything that he did and I think it was a great loss when he passed! R.I.P. Johnny Carson!
This video literally had the past, present and future of late night entertainment... Carson, letterman and Conan.... Love and Respect each one of them...❤ Each one traced the footsteps of the other and made a path of their own...
There were only three major networks during Johnny Carson's run, so anyone given a show had to be good. But nobody else was THIS good. The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson was a high-water mark for the industry, and a cultural institution. His content went viral, daily, before there was an internet.
It's sad to be flipping through the myriad TV channels looking for something to watch and realizing that the best thing on at the moment is an infomercial for "The Best of Carson" DVD sets
I caught Carson as host for the last few years. Definitely broke the mold when they made him. Carson,Letterman,Conan and Craig. My Mt.Rushmore of Late Night hosts.
The day my mom let me have a little b/w tv in my room I knew it was for one reason only. Every night I would cover it with the blanket and watch Johnny. The volume knob would be turned down so low because I didn’t want my folks to hear the loud laughter from the show
We use to tune our TV on the tonight show every night while in bed. We would catch Johnny's monologue, even though we had to get up early.. He was the best late night show host ever. Rip Johnny.
I was a full grown man when Jonny left the Tonight Show. That night I cried silently for The loss we as a Audience would Have. No more monologs , No more Interviews with the people of the audience, No more Jonny. When he died I sat with a friend and we told each other about which was are favorite episodes of Jonny then we cried on each others shoulders . I Miss Jonny Carson and I think so does everyone who ever saw and watched his show every night. I see this now 14 years Later and realize Just how much we needed him then and I for one am grateful we had him. Oh how I Wish we had someone like him now. No one can replace someone else, but we can at least hope for someone like him. But alas that is not to be. God Bless you Mister Carson, We miss you everyday.
Like I stated on another Carson website, Johnny Carson was the reason why we put TV's in our bedroom back in the late 1960's. We laid in bed & listened to Carson's monolog. And then we either stayed awake to hear a guest of our interest or we fell asleep. The Tonight Show was often just the background lighting to our sexual activity. "Heeeeere's Johnny" often meant more than his walking out on stage.....LOL. Johnny will forever be the king of late night television.
Was a very uncool teen in the 70's. Loved my friends and loved the music but did not like the bar scene. Music was deafening loud, smoke made my eyes burn, and I didn't like the taste of soda, let alone booze. But I went where my friends wanted to be. Around midnight with a hoarse vouce and a ringing in my ears, I distinctly remember thinking how I would much rather be at home watching Johnny. Guess this video popped up in my recommendations because I've tried to distract myself from the humorless times we are living in. Johnny still sending me off to bed with a smile and lighter heart. Thank you, Johnny. Well done, Dave.
Johnny was a part of our family for thirty years when I was a kid I had to be in bed when I heard the song. If I got to stay up and watch it was magical. when I got older I would watch him and letterman every night. Tv will never be the same without him.
As a boy, from about 12 years old and through high school my parents were always demanding that I needed my sleep and that 10:00 pm was my bedtime and about every night I was forced to stall and slowly shuffling to my bedroom down the hallway begging to just hear Johnny’s monologue! Show started 10:30 pm in our central time zone. I think that it was finally my senior year that bedtime was agreed upon that my brother and I could stay up late enough at least for the 24 joke nightly monologue
Starting when I was in junior high, I stayed up pretty late doing homework; so even though the show didn't come on until 11:30 where I lived, I still managed to watch the monologue most nights. I can still picture myself sitting on my bedroom floor, leaning against my bed with a text book balanced on my knees and Johnny Carson on the TV.
Johnny was the only true King of Late Night. Nowadays they do an hour. Johnny did an hour and forty-five minutes at the start and 90 minutes for much of his run. Not only was he a great stand up comedian whose opening monologue was anxiously awaited for every day, but he was a terrific interviewer equally at home with children and major stars (by far the best of all the comics who've ever done late night shows dealing with regular people and because his show ran so long he had many more of them on in the early days than other hosts do nowadays). He was the best at what he did and really established the genre despite the fact there were others before him. Everything Dave says is spot on.

Dany Lynen DanFab4 they were both really cool and class acts
Once they decided to bow out, both The Beatles AND Johnny had the smarts to avoid a comeback. It's never the same.
Saw his show tape live from the front row once. Didnt realize at the time how lucky I was. I do now.
Must have been amazing.
Its now 2022 There's not a nighttime
show that can beat Jonny Carson.
The Tonight Show was a staple of our culture 🇺🇸 ❤
Wonderful tribute by Letterman. I grew up watching the last 10 years of Carson, no one ever held a a candle to his natural talent and gift. So glad I can watch old reruns occasionally.
All these years later I still miss this guy so much.
How I enjoyed Carson's Humour and Sauve Manner. He has Never been followed. RIP
What made Johnny great he was the host everyone watched.
Im glad I found this clip. It's my favorite. Johnny was the best.
Look up the Leno tribute - about 20 minutes long which has many great moments. You will love it ! It was done right after he passed.
Always loved the way he dressed. On the show or off a most splendid wardrobe he presented.
*watching all those current hosts grimace*
Someone earlier replied, here, "I feel sorry for the generation that didn't know Johnny Carson."
Make that 'generations', now.
Shame what TV has become. Just remember John.
And smile.
I grew up in the 70's and 80's. And I remember Carson vividly. And Letterman when he was on NBC. Worth staying up for, even when I was 12. This one brought tears to my eyes.
The Greatest Late Night Talk Show Host Ever !!!!!
Johnny wasn't bad either.
I Clog Toilets it’s a joke man
Superbly written tribute delivered perfectly.
Every single person in that room should have been standing for the ovation. Every talk show host should have been bowing, Wayne & Garth style.
Simply a legend! How lucky many of us were to grow up watching him!
Very nicely said.
This video literally had the past, present and future of late night entertainment...
Carson, letterman and Conan....
Love and Respect each one of them...❤
Each one traced the footsteps of the other and made a path of their own...
There were only three major networks during Johnny Carson's run, so anyone given a show had to be good. But nobody else was THIS good. The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson was a high-water mark for the industry, and a cultural institution. His content went viral, daily, before there was an internet.
How Dave Letterman kept from breaking down while doing this tribute is amazing. We loved you Johnny rip
Carson was Letterman's mentor... and dear friend. We shall not see his like again.
He was the best of the best.
It's sad to be flipping through the myriad TV channels looking for something to watch and realizing that the best thing on at the moment is an infomercial for "The Best of Carson" DVD sets
It's actually true.
Carson and Cavett were the true legends of American late-night TV.
I caught Carson as host for the last few years. Definitely broke the mold when they made him. Carson,Letterman,Conan and Craig. My Mt.Rushmore of Late Night hosts.
David Letterman I guess I'll have to give you an A+ I did watch your shows occasionally, BUT Johnny was by and far the best.
ABSOLUTELY THE BEST. Period.
The day my mom let me have a little b/w tv in my room I knew it was for one reason only. Every night I would cover it with the blanket and watch Johnny. The volume knob would be turned down so low because I didn’t want my folks to hear the loud laughter from the show
The 1 and only. Amazing guy, America's favorite for ever.
We use to tune our TV on the tonight show every night while in bed. We would catch Johnny's monologue, even though we had to get up early.. He was the best late night show host ever. Rip Johnny.
Truly an American treasure.
I wish I grew up during this Era
Life was more genuine
Miss these days so much
Today’s standards have lost the lustful pleasure
For cripe's sake, it's "Johnny"!
My husband and I used to watch Johnny and laugh together. They're both gone now, but I cherish the memories.
Shoes that can never be filled.
I was born in the 1980s so I knew who Carson was and even though I only saw his last few seasons he really was the BEST!!
Johnny Carson was the Greatest talk show host. There will never be another talk show host that comes even close. We all cried when he passed away!
I'm so glad I was blessed to watch Johnny Carson growing up Im 50 now and I still Miss him. So much love for Mr. Carson
King and legend...no 2nd anywhere not now not ever.
RIP Johnny Carson (October 23, 1925 - January 23, 2005), aged 79
You will always be remembered as a legend.
One of The Greatest and funniest ever to cross the TV screen. Absolutely the Greatest
Getting old means what you never could have seen in your youth: the passing of icons who have meant so much to you. Love you Johnny!
@Elijah Jones Yes and Joe Biden is doing a great job,
