Brilliant. The mark of a great comedian is they're like a warrior. They go to battle with bad jokes and tough audiences and know how to improvise. And watching Johnny do that is beautiful. RIP to the greatest.

Steve Allen, first host of The Tonight Show, wrote those scripts and brought together the talented actors to present them in a natural and conversational style. You could almost believe you were listening to the historical figures in debate and discussion.

This my be my favorite bomb of all time! Every late night talk show host has done it, but it usually doesn't last a full 9 minutes! Johnny knew that he was screwed from the first joke, but embraced it and made the bombing itself funny. That's a skill that, I think, only Johnny possessed!
No one else like on him on tv today and NO ONE will ever be able to replace this legendary and multi-talented man who was the BEST EVER on what he did on television!!! Gosh, I sure miss the man in so many ways and I cherish these videos of him and all the memories he gave us. As far as talk show hosts, Johnny and - Steve Allen- well they were the greats. For LATE late late night- Tom Syder and Craig Ferguson get votes from me. David Letterman (will sure miss him) too, showed how it takes years and layers to develop a great style- he should have had the Tonight Show.

Tom Snyder was mainly a fine talk show host with a great voice and personality and he was not afraid to ask the tough questions to his guests. He was a real pro for very interesting in-depth talks late at night. But the bottom line, Katy, is that all of us will have our own list of favorites and that is fine. Cheers!

Johnny was the BEST ever in my opinion for what he did with his talents and that generation of guests he had are almost all gone now. That was an era that will never be again and thank God for the reruns! And today's hosts and guests on these late night shows bore me to death and that is why I keep the tv off at night now. And their personalities annoy me and their "comedy" is NOT funny at all! So yah, it definitely IS "late night crap"!
I missed this when it aired, so seeing it now is a real treat. Two observations: 1. If you're below a certain age, you won't get most of this; if you're above a certain age, you'll find this hysterical. 2. Carson's genius was never on better display than when he delivered the opening monologue, it bombed, and he then turned the bomb into comedy GOLD. Carson: The GOLD STANDARD.

I'd put it just a little differently. Carson could be entertaining even when his jokes were bombing. It helped a lot that he could make fun of himself or joke gently about the tough crowd. Amen to that. Sadly most people under 40 just don't realize how funny he was. I admit a lot of it is time sensitive in that you had to be around then to get some of the jokes but it still blows what's on late night now away by leaps and bounds.
Chad Quick Carson, when he was young, did incredible stunts on his show, one of the biggest stars on TV and unafraid of making himself look silly. He was so good at making fun of himself, so he convinced us that he was just like the rest of us, despite his millions and celebrity status. To do that unerringly for thousands of performances is astounding.

Johnny's style was to tell bad jokes, let them die, and then react. It was his reactions to the dying jokes that was hilarious. I don't think any comic ever did that as well as he did.
There have been many great bomb recoveries from great comedians, however, what sets Johnny apart from the rest of them is that Johnny could bomb for 9 minutes straight and still make it funny! I don't think anyone else would have survived this.

I think it's interesting that he didn't really care if he bombed. Johnny wasn't stupid and he knew the audience got a kick out of his bad jokes and poor nights on national TV. Watching him struggle was something he knew people liked. He had routines just for that.
Never will we see the likes of Carson again. He was one of a kind. Certainly, the king of late night!! No one has, and never will, come close. I consider myself very fortunate to have lived in his time.
Yes, I agree Rahkin......Johnny knew what he was doing and he knew how to handle things well. If a joke was bad...he went with it.....which made it even funnier. He had a lot of practice too........before getting the Tonight Show on October 1, 1962 he did the game show Whom Do You Trust plus Carsons Celler. He was also writer for the Red Skelton Show and was discovered because Red had accidently fallen during rehearsal and broke his leg and Johnny had to fill in for Red Skelton doing the monologue ......betcha didn't know that............You can thank Red Skelton the great comic for giving Johnny his start ..............
Carson is so funny when he’s dying on stage. His improv skills really shine! A beeper goes off: “See if you can call my writers on that damn thing!” And then, “You know it’s not going well when a guy calls for the paramedics during the monologue.” 👏🏻😂
Johnny Carson has the record for hosting the Tonight Show for close to thirty years. His retirement,although well-deserved,caused a large void in late-night programming which Leno and Letterman combined never could completely fill.
Leno wasn't bad with what he had...but his trouble was that he followed the King of late night... He was a Jack at best... All the rest were deuces and not in a good way...
I recall when the monologue was going right in the dumper, suddenly the band went into "Tea For Two" and Johnny would immediately fall into tap dancing to the tune! It did not happen often, but when it did, I would not be able to catch my breath from laughing. Does anybody else recall catching that magic?
The best deadpan bomb one was where Carson pulled the mike down for a blue light special. I laugh at that... every single time. I haven't been able to find it on RUclips.

This is why Carson will never be replaced as king of late night TV--his personality, timing, and self-deprecating wit are unmatched! (His monologue does kind of start out "flat" but the great ones ALWAYS manage to make lemonade from lemons, as Johnny does here!!)

WoW! I cant believe I found this clip. I was in the audience for this taping! It was my first trip to the big city and I had just turned 21.....And yes, when Johnny started talking about the name of the new dog that will be in the white house, a guy in the audience yelled out "Barbara", referring to Barbara Bush of course. It was very loud to us in the audience but cant be heard very clear on the tape. Seeing Johnny in person was the highlight of the trip.
I always felt that Carson was funnier when he was bombing because he handled it so brilliantly. He is absolutely the all-time maestro. Nobody can touch him.
The saying is that an actor or performer should NEVER look directly at the camera. Johnny ignored that completely, and it was hilarious. Most comedians today would be devastated and hurt if a joke bombed. But Johnny, like Bob Hope, realized quickly that, no, the audience was not laughing AT them. They were laughing WITH them. Brilliant.
Johnny knew his job was to make people laugh. Whether that was at the jokes he made or at his own expense didn't matter. If the audience was enjoying themselves, that's what was important.
I use go to bed at 9 and would to set my alarm to wake up at 11 to hear the monologue, then go back to sleep. Did this for 10 years! The man was a genius!!
I always found it funnier when Johnny bombed. He'd pivot. The joke was no longer the joke he just told. The joke was him. And Doc and the band would break into "Tea For Two" and Johnny would do a little soft-shoe dance. Then if another joke bombed, they'd break into Tea For Two again in a higher key. It was hilarious.
The networks should have ended the late night talk shows when Johnny retired. What followed on all three networks wouldn't make a decent pimple on Johnny Carson's butt!
Ed's background laughter was fucken EPIC, plus Johnny's straight face after his sometimes, corny, but always funny one liners, meant all was good in Late Nightville. Lol
Classic. Even when Carson is bombing he is so funny. Only a pro can make a joke out of bombing on his jokes! Think about how few comedians could really pull that off. Now, clearly the audience was pulling for him, as I was too. Many lesser experienced comedians don't have that luxury. But to be able to make BAD jokes so funny was an incredible skill that he had. I can't stand the group that is doing late night now. Really miss Carson at night...
That's true. back in the 80's always caught Johnny-and damn near always made you feel good. If him or Ed had a couple... before the show all the better....It's too sad now...have to get up to early so always in bed way before 11:30, and was sick of Trump long before he became President and don't need to hear anymore about him if possible.

That would work for me. I sure won't watch Fallon. I watched Carson for 30 years, and I'd do it again. His best monologues were like this one. They started to bomb, and he would pull them out. The best ad-libber there ever was! Nothing phased him.

I don't understand it, but there is something so funny about a bad joke, especially several bad jokes, and seeing a comedian dying before your very eyes. That's comedy. Sure do miss Johnny. He was my late night companion for many years.

Loved Johnny Carson. Even when he bombs and the audience doesn't laugh, he plays it off and is still hilarious.
He’s almost funnier when he bombs.

I think it's interesting that he didn't really care if he bombed. Johnny wasn't stupid and he knew the audience got a kick out of his bad jokes and poor nights on national TV. Watching him struggle was something he knew people liked. He had routines just for that.

Never will we see the likes of Carson again. He was one of a kind. Certainly, the king of late night!! No one has, and never will, come close. I consider myself very fortunate to have lived in his time.

The BEST "late night host" ever!
Yes, I agree Rahkin......Johnny knew what he was doing and he knew how to handle things well. If a joke was bad...he went with it.....which made it even funnier. He had a lot of practice too........before getting the Tonight Show on October 1, 1962 he did the game show Whom Do You Trust plus Carsons Celler. He was also writer for the Red Skelton Show and was discovered because Red had accidently fallen during rehearsal and broke his leg and Johnny had to fill in for Red Skelton doing the monologue ......betcha didn't know that............You can thank Red Skelton the great comic for giving Johnny his start ..............
Carson is so funny when he’s dying on stage. His improv skills really shine! A beeper goes off: “See if you can call my writers on that damn thing!” And then, “You know it’s not going well when a guy calls for the paramedics during the monologue.” 👏🏻😂
Johnny Carson has the record for hosting the Tonight Show for close to thirty years. His retirement,although well-deserved,caused a large void in late-night programming which Leno and Letterman combined never could completely fill.
There were three great hosts of that show: Steve Allen, Jack Paar, and Carson, and nobody fit to tote guts to a bear since, on any network.
Leno wasn't bad with what he had...but his trouble was that he followed the King of late night... He was a Jack at best... All the rest were deuces and not in a good way...
I recall when the monologue was going right in the dumper, suddenly the band went into "Tea For Two" and Johnny would immediately fall into tap dancing to the tune! It did not happen often, but when it did, I would not be able to catch my breath from laughing. Does anybody else recall catching that magic?

The best deadpan bomb one was where Carson pulled the mike down for a blue light special. I laugh at that... every single time. I haven't been able to find it on RUclips.

This is why Carson will never be replaced as king of late night TV--his personality, timing, and self-deprecating wit are unmatched! (His monologue does kind of start out "flat" but the great ones ALWAYS manage to make lemonade from lemons, as Johnny does here!!)

WoW! I cant believe I found this clip. I was in the audience for this taping! It was my first trip to the big city and I had just turned 21.....And yes, when Johnny started talking about the name of the new dog that will be in the white house, a guy in the audience yelled out "Barbara", referring to Barbara Bush of course. It was very loud to us in the audience but cant be heard very clear on the tape. Seeing Johnny in person was the highlight of the trip.

I always felt that Carson was funnier when he was bombing because he handled it so brilliantly. He is absolutely the all-time maestro. Nobody can touch him.

The saying is that an actor or performer should NEVER look directly at the camera. Johnny ignored that completely, and it was hilarious. Most comedians today would be devastated and hurt if a joke bombed. But Johnny, like Bob Hope, realized quickly that, no, the audience was not laughing AT them. They were laughing WITH them. Brilliant.
Johnny knew his job was to make people laugh. Whether that was at the jokes he made or at his own expense didn't matter. If the audience was enjoying themselves, that's what was important.
I use go to bed at 9 and would to set my alarm to wake up at 11 to hear the monologue, then go back to sleep. Did this for 10 years! The man was a genius!!

I always found it funnier when Johnny bombed. He'd pivot. The joke was no longer the joke he just told. The joke was him. And Doc and the band would break into "Tea For Two" and Johnny would do a little soft-shoe dance. Then if another joke bombed, they'd break into Tea For Two again in a higher key. It was hilarious.
Oh what a difference from 2017... Even on Johnny's worst night he had 10x the class of today's late night hosts....
The networks should have ended the late night talk shows when Johnny retired. What followed on all three networks wouldn't make a decent pimple on Johnny Carson's butt!

I watch this clip every two weeks and I laugh my ass off every single time.
It’s not the words you use or the jokes you tell, it’s the persona. That’s why no one is better at late night tv than the great Johnny Carson.
Late night talk shows have NEVER been the same.
Ed's background laughter was fucken EPIC, plus Johnny's straight face after his sometimes, corny, but always funny one liners, meant all was good in Late Nightville. Lol

Classic. Even when Carson is bombing he is so funny. Only a pro can make a joke out of bombing on his jokes! Think about how few comedians could really pull that off. Now, clearly the audience was pulling for him, as I was too. Many lesser experienced comedians don't have that luxury. But to be able to make BAD jokes so funny was an incredible skill that he had. I can't stand the group that is doing late night now. Really miss Carson at night...

That's true. back in the 80's always caught Johnny-and damn near always made you feel good. If him or Ed had a couple... before the show all the better....It's too sad now...have to get up to early so always in bed way before 11:30, and was sick of Trump long before he became President and don't need to hear anymore about him if possible.

That would work for me. I sure won't watch Fallon. I watched Carson for 30 years, and I'd do it again. His best monologues were like this one. They started to bomb, and he would pull them out. The best ad-libber there ever was! Nothing phased him.

Chris Thorton Johnny Carlson picked the right man to replace him. Jay Leno and his garage has gone past The Tonight Show and is in the new world of the internet with the same type of Good Humor in the vein of Carson.

I don't understand it, but there is something so funny about a bad joke, especially several bad jokes, and seeing a comedian dying before your very eyes. That's comedy. Sure do miss Johnny. He was my late night companion for many years.
