"Strangled by the wishes of pater (father), hoping for the arms of mater (mother)" …. Song written and sung about Mick Hucknall’s childhood. His mum left when he was three. He didn’t get along with his dad in older years. Song didn’t get very far in the UK but it was re-released a year later, it went to #1. He was born in the UK. His parents were Irish with a grandparent from Slavic Jewish ancestry. Blue eyed soul….. ❤️
@@clarissagarza7284 Generally means he was born in England, but has Irish ancestry. It could be one of his parents or grandparents. I am English, with Scottish ancestry as my mum is Scottish.
One of the greatest voices to come out of the U.K.. Up there with Freddie Mercury..... He's from Manchester in England, and he still sounds this good today. I have never heard him sing a bad note. One of the best live acts ever.
If I remember right, that's Whitby in Yorkshire that he's walking through... The steam railway is a heritage railway - the North Yorks Moors Railway - and it still operates a passenger service commercially. Anyway, yes, that white boy is Mick Hucknall and it's him singing.
Was blessed to see him live with back stage passes. The dude can sing and the dude is real. Lots of material from him to listen to. He is still crooning today.
As we grow our taste in music grows and changes. We come to appreciate the quality of the vocals and the musical productions start to sink in.Helping us to sit back and take in the sound. The words, and feel the music more and more. Check out Simply Red "Money's too tight to mention".Mick is a phenominal vocalist.Sooooo Soulful.Great band.
I wonder if Mick Hucknall knows how many goosebumps he's popped on people listening to his songs! Dang every time! Mick Hucknall is English with an Irish background. Hottest redhead to ever live back in the day. His voice is pure perfection.
Seen him live many times..... Always excellent. Probably one of the best/most underrated singers of the last 40 years! Check out the live at Montreaux versions of "The Right Thing" and "Money's Too Tight To Mention" to see how good they are live and also the more up-tempo side of them. Oh yeah, He's from Manchester, England (my neck of the woods!)
I like how you're reflecting on the types of music you like exploring about now, vs on how you may have viewed things when you were younger. I think y'all have a great reaction channel.
Simply Red was on my bucket list for many years and I finally got to see them in Sydney. That concert was one of the best I've been to. Mick has such a great voice and is fantastic live. Keep digging into their songs, you won't regret it.
Thanks for reacting to this. This is one of my favorite Blue-Eyed Soul songs. He also remade/covered IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME BY NOW by Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes.
The singer is from England. This is one I've listened to over and over. Such a melancholy song and beautiful voice. Hey, this kind of stuff is old people's secret! Glad you appreciate it.
I like to hear you share memories of riding with your Nana because my grandson is 16 now and I know he has those memories, as well. I really cherish those days.
Song about his mother leaving the household when he was very young and growing up in a Manchester UK household with a tough father. Mick has such a beautiful voice. One of my go to tracks.
Official song when you happy when you said when you chilling like you said when you wiping down your rims. This song brings back memories to some people probably.this song make you think about s*** that ain't got nothing to do with the song just cuz of the melody and the beat.
Listen let me tell you I still remember where I was the first time my mom played this song !! It never gets old and yes that's him singing..lol another great choice!
Simply Red are a British soul and pop band formed in Manchester in 1985. The lead vocalist of the band is singer and songwriter Mick Hucknall, who, by the time the band initially disbanded in 2010, was the only original member left.
His mother (lead singer( abandoned the family when he was three. That's the back story I read about this song. I was 9 or 10 when this song came out. I knew this was a hit and a classic. Real blue eyed soul, young people. 2/28/2022
He's a great Soul singer one of the best for sure. He's a white Englishman mate. (Ginger) lol 😂 from north of England great voice.. The Englishmen and Welshmen are known for our voices and sing writing also Virtuoso Instrumentalists (& Irish on occasion) especially old-school Londoner's (and the Welsh from the Welsh valleys).. through the years a few you probably heard of Amy Winehouse, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield(Motown) Many Many GREAT singers who are English or British, a lot of people don't realise are British funnily enough! (Until they hear them speak) also obviously reinvented the Blues and exported back to America via Eric Clapton and his peers etc.. Ps. we still ALL love a karaoke! lol. Good review guys only just found your channel! Cheers from London England 👍😎🏴
As someone mentioned Mick Hucknell is an English singer from Manchester England, his background is Irish. Love this song, if you don't know me by now is another great one. My older sister s a huge fan, so smooth. Reaction goats in the house.
When Simply Red hit the scene in the 80's.... ABSOLUTELY blew me away. Incredible singer, Mick Hucknall was, (and apparently still is), an incredible singer.
One of the most beautiful songs. The heartbreaking part is that he is singing about the heartache of growing up without a mother; she left him and his father when he was just a young boy; you can feel the pain in his delivery; he wasted all those years waiting for his mother 🥲
Love the channel! You should react to Taylor Dayne. She was R&B singer in the 80s discovered by Prince. 1) Love will lead you back. 2) Tell it to my heart 3) I'll always love you. Her voice is nothing but soul!!!
Thanks for reacting to this classic. Highschool memories. Just soothing. They are an English group, lead vocal is Mick Hucknall. Pls also check out their "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)" and "Never, Never Love".
Throughout your reaction journey, you'll find artists who don't look like they fit a certain genre. If you haven't already, check out What You Won't Do For Love by Bobby Caldwell. Great reaction and I hope you'll react to a band called STEELY DAN soon. Try "Do It Again" by SD and groove down THAT rabbit hole. You won't be sorry.
This is not about liking old music and being old. It is about our life experience that is beginning to finally speak gently. And the scars on our body and our mind are resonating with music. Since our life history is different for each of us, but so similar at the same time, that is why we have different tastes in music while sharing them at the same time.
I love the comments from all of you who really understand the song and how important it was to see it back then. . But to answer Lilf's question: HE'S IRISH. He wrote the song early 1985, recorded and released the song November 1. 1985. He was 17-years old.

They got the name Simply Red because of Mick Hucknalls nickname which was "Red". Hucknall wrote this in his bedroom at his father's house. He was still a teenager. Please check out if you don't know me by now by Simply Red.

Simply Red is the group. The singer is Mick Hucknall, who is English of Irish ancestry.
What does that mean? English of Irish ancestry? He had Irish ancestors but he grew up in England? Or vice versa?

Great song, great reaction. There's an old saying "don't judge a book by it's cover". Talent doesn't discriminate- people do.
