Mick is from Manchester England. This is his painful song about him mom leaving the family when he was young. An overbearing father.. I'm so happy his music is appreciated by a younger generation. Beautiful couple right there. I subbed you
This song is about his mother walking out on him and his dad. Such a powerful song, powerful voice and he sticks the emotions. What a great, great song!
What a beautiful, powerful voice this gentleman has. I'm 74 and I love listening to him today even more than when he first graced the charts with his unique voice. He still gives me chills.
I was lucky enough to see Mick and Simply Red live in Manchester England in February this year for the first time, what an amazing voice… I’ve been a fan for over 30 years, well worth waiting for 🤩
There's a concert at The Royal Albert theater of Simply Red from around 7 yrs ago. He sounds exactly the same as when he originally responded and the audience knows the words
I was so lucky to have seen Simply Red live in concert on the steps of the Sydney Opera House on their farewell tour. It was such a magical night and Mick was fantastic, a bucklist experience ticked off that night, just pure talent. 💕
I had a chance to see BB King, my favorite blues artist, and passed on it when he came to town..... thinking I'll catch him next time. Well, there was never a next time bc he died shortly thereafter and I have been kicking myself ever since. So happy u got to see Mick. Now, when a favorite act comes to town, I go....wether I have the money or not, I GO! Paid off, saw Steeley Dan right b4 Walter Becker passed and they were nothing short of PHENOMINAL! So happy I got to see this legendary band with Walter Becker. Glad u got to see SR Bernice.
I suggest you go down this rabbit hole. I have always known this song. I was watching a video a concert of his in Sidney. I could not believe the songs that he did that were his and I never knew it. I watched it on RUclips. Its a fairly recent concert and he is older but that voice is on point like it always was. One of the most unique voices I have ever heard.
Being an old man of 65 we didn’t see many of the bands of our youth like you do now. No MTV, internet and alike. You had a few variety shows and bandstand. You imagined what they all looked like when listening to them. Funny how different they actually look.
The Lyrics "Strangled by the wishes of Pater" refers to his father and "Hoping for the arms of Mater" refers to his mother who left him with his father when Mick was only 3 years old....He named his band "Simply Red" after his hair color, his politics and his favorite soccer team Manchester United, which is from the city where he was born.
This is my very first time watching your video. I aalways stand up in front of my computer screen to give a standing ovation on a few songs, including this one.. I have always been a HUGE Simply Red, I met Mick briefly in front of Le Spectrum de Montréal (Québec, Canada) on August 9th 1986, he was not yet prepared for "fans galore", we all found him "cold", but we all love him anyway, and Simply Red as s a band also. Forever.........NOTE: It's OK to cry, I cry every single time I hear the song, and we are the very first day of 2024.
That was flat out better than the album version. His voice was more relaxed and playful. It’s so impressive to hear an artist with such a clear, natural voice, singing live in all his glory. As you guys said, pure talent.
The amazing thing is that he still sounds like this! Most vocalists lose their chops past a certain age. I dunno if he's just stayed in good health or what, but there's been little to no deterioration over time.
Man, every note is right, full of emotion, perfectly performed. Mick, he has always been good and he is already an "old man" with his 62 years. But the music also keeps young. I wish him many more healthy years, that he does not lose the fun in his work and in the fans. Every song is a treat...!
The original version of this song is beautiful. Years after it's release Mick Hucknall, the lead singer, came out with a more jazz influenced version of this song. This live version sounds like the jazz version to me. He has an amazing voice to say the least.
Lovely to see you young kids enjoying this class act , seen simply red about ten times BB King said we think we can sing the blues but this man really knows how, good work highlighting this GREAT singer
You guys are great. I've watched many breakdown videos of this GREAT song ( as a near 70yr old male) and it still makes me well up. You guys made it so genuinely appreciated, just as it should be. He just sang this in Rome. Yes, it's been heard around the world. Saddens me to think that so many could relate to those lyrics. Myself included. But I luv this song. And others he has sung. Simply Red. Thanks. What a nice couple you are.
It's great seeing reactions to my old song book in the day. I've seen Simply Red so many times through the years but there again I was at school with Tim the trumpet/keyboard player.
LOVED THIS REACTION!! Absolutely killed it as did Mick. Such a good reaction love seeing the appreciation and emotions this song gave you both. This is what music does to us. Thank you guys for the post and reaction. As always stay safe and much love guys.
He STILL sounds like this.. there is an even more current live version of this out there. He has an AMAZING voice! Thanks for a great reaction to this beautifully written (from his life experience) song!
I think this musical genius wrote this at just 17 years old! Never needed to eclipse this, but listen to the awesome vocals introduced as he matured. Stunning, astonishing! VBW x
I went to see Simply Red in concert a couple of months ago in the UK and although Mick is 62 now his voice has got even better which is unbelievable, made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
I was 13 when my mother walked out on me and my dad. She left a note on the table that she was never coming back. Brings back some painful memories but we all get through it in are own way.
I loved how you said his vocals are like he's just walking around the house in his robe... he's that effortless!!! I'd love to see you react to Simoky Red's Money's Too Tight to Mention and Stars. And if you haven't already, his rendition of The Air That I Breathe and Someday in My Life... moves me every time!!
Saw him live a few year's ago in my hometown of leeds in the UK,he opened with this song and it was absolutely brilliant , I took my nephew with me who is a lot younger than me and he said it was one of the best concerts he'd ever been to, Mick is a genius.
🇬🇧 I was very fortunate enough to see Mick and the band a few months ago. They were absolutely brilliant. Promoting some of their new song and also doing the old favorites. Still sounding the same. Just lovely. I'm from Gloucestershire, England. We live in a lovely village called the Cotswold, England. ❤
Not only that they still sound as amazing live as they do in the studio, but when they also sound just as amazing after they've aged 25-30 years proves it too. I watched a live video of Mick singing his song _Stars_ from like 3 years ago or so (the symphonica in Rosso video), and he sounded _exactly_ the same as he did when the song came out 31 years ago.
I was at the G mex in Manchester in early 90s,it was middle of the afternoon and I had a friend on security, anyway I got to stand inside and hear them rehearsing. absolutely amazing.
This is an unbelievably great song that like the others said can be heard over and over and over and never get tired of. It’s so soulful, the story behind it is so sad and yet so many people can relate to it or something like it. This guy is beloved. Please check out if you haven’t a couple other of his greatest hits 💜♥️💜♥️
On New years eve 1989 the Swedish public service radio aired an eight hour long special "8 timmar 80-tal"="8 hour 80s". Bruce Springsteens Hungry heart started the special. 8 hours later and appropriate enough, this was the last song.
Simply Red was formed by lead singer Mick Hucknall in 1985, he was a teen when he wrote this reflecting on a troubled childhood when his mom abandoned him just aged 3 and growing up with a tyrannical dad 😢 SR mostly sing originals although they’ve had some massive hits with a couple of covers, their cover of If You Don’t Know Me By Now was huge for them and their cover from their 2003 album Home of You Make Me Feel Brand New, they disbanded in 2010 by reformed in 2015 and are set to tour in Summer ‘23 😊
What's missing from a lot of today's performers aside from true talent( highly on display here) is the passion and love for what they're doing. It's sad that auto tune is such a thing, that people are now surprised by the people who can actually sing.
I have never listened to this song LIVE and that obviously wasa HUGE mistake. This soft jazz, adult contemporary version is even better than the studio version... You have a new subscriber, congrats!!!
He is a BRITISH Troubadours and Trouvères In Europe there were people who went around the countryside making a living by singing and playing musical instruments. They often went to big houses where rich people lived and entertained them with their faces. These travelling musicians were called minstrels in England, and troubadours or trouvères in many other countries,
When this started I was thinking how much better he sounds than the official video. He has the best voice. So smooth. Always loved his music. So many great songs.
Mick Hucknall is an absolute BEAST of a vocalist!!
He is unreal!
Maybe the best ever

He once called himself the best white soul singer. I think he was right.
36\37 years later, hearing it thousands upon thousands of times and this song STILL gives me the chills! ❤️❤️❤️
This song is about his mother walking out on him and his dad.
Such a powerful song, powerful voice and he sticks the emotions.
What a great, great song!
I can relate. My mum left before I was born

I love watching him sing this live, but the official music video, his vocals are so powerful when he hits those high notes. Thanks. Great reaction.
Remarkable performance. Thanks
I was lucky enough to see Mick and Simply Red live in Manchester England in February this year for the first time, what an amazing voice… I’ve been a fan for over 30 years, well worth waiting for 🤩
The muffled trumpet is probably the coolest sound in music.
He STILL sounds like this. Amazing.
Beautiful song. Love Mick Hucknall, he has lovely soulful voice.

Simply Red is Awesome 👌
Great reaction
It's ok D get emotional It's a great song.
The thing is, he's an older man now, and STILL killing it.
Mick's voice has always given me shivers. Especially this one. Another song I love from Simply Red is For Your Babies. (among many)
Being an old man of 65 we didn’t see many of the bands of our youth like you do now. No MTV, internet and alike. You had a few variety shows and bandstand. You imagined what they all looked like when listening to them. Funny how different they actually look.
Thanks for sharing, I love this Live version; What a Voice!! Simply Red were amazing, you should hear their cover of If You Don’t Know Me By Now
Their rendition of If You Don’t Know Me By Now gives me chill bumps e v e r y time!
Thank-You so very much!

he did a shit ton of coke so maybe he's lucky
🇬🇧 he actually does sound the same. I've seen him many times. I'm really happy they still do tours in Europe and here in the UK! 🇬🇧❤
He moves/dances a lot when he sings too. How does he sound so flawless?

And he could keep his Voive all the years !!! Amazing
This is the reason why the 80's was truly one of the greatest decades for music!
Yeaaaah boy! Was a teen in the 80's. What a great decade to grow up in.
You guys need to listen to every single song he's ever made and sung!! He's such an amazing talent. The feelings and emotions he puts into his vocals.

Lovely to see you young kids enjoying this class act , seen simply red about ten times BB King said we think we can sing the blues but this man really knows how, good work highlighting this GREAT singer
Only the best R&B song of all time! And that muted coronet... and all the flat thirds of the blues... Damn! That's good! 😶🌫😶🌫😊

The delight on your faces makes this video priceless...Mick is indeed a phenominal vocalist.

I was at the G mex in Manchester in early 90s,it was middle of the afternoon and I had a friend on security, anyway I got to stand inside and hear them rehearsing. absolutely amazing.
A true Irish tenor’s voice! He can go up and get it yet still maintain his power and control!
I have been going to concerts for over 50 years and he is definitely the best live vocalist i have heard. And that includes Art Garfunkel.
This is an unbelievably great song that like the others said can be heard over and over and over and never get tired of. I absolutely love this song. It is so not easy to sing like he does. He is pure talent and I predict that in 100 years it will still be amazing❤️

SO much soul! What a great performance.
Simply Reds version of the old Motown classic 'If You Don't Know Me By Now' by Harold Melvin is one of their very best, I reckon.
Voice from heaven ! 😊
I remember this song but now I really appreciate so much more from your reaction. thanks!
Loved Simply Red back in the day. Very soulful voice!
What a great song from 1985. My dad loved this song. Miss u dad. RIP dad!
I saw them last month in Lincolnshire (UK) His voice is as good as it's always been. They were amazing.

Love, love, loved it. The original video was spectacular. Makes me cry every time. Thank you.
Real music kids real talent.
I also like his cover of If You Don't Know Me By Now.
Voice of an angel - listen to how good he is live! OMG! He is a gift!
I saw them In march of this year and still a fantastic group live. and mick still has a fantastic voice.

A real red head from great britain 😎
Saw them live in Vienna back in 2015 - the greatest thing was that they didn´t change ANYTHING :)
