I had a similar issue. Mine was a rattle. I thought it was the roof rack but when I climbed up there it was tight. I’ve had the windshield replaced and I think they didn’t replace the upper windshield moulding properly. Last week I was cruising along at 80mph and an oncoming truck passed me and the upper windshield moulding came flying off. I was able to order another one which was OEM directly from Japan for about $150 and it’s quiet. Happy FJaying! Love my 2013 FJ!
My 2012 FJ has been doing this for 3-4 years now and i have never been able to determine the best fix. After seeing this video and reading some online threads i am convinced that fixing the upper trim is the solution. Thanks for the concise and clear video!
This happened to mine starting around 60 - 65 mph. I put electrical tape along the bottom of the trim. One piece that is about 1/4" on the trim and windshield. Regular width tape.. It stopped it 100%. No noise up to at least 80 mph. You can't tell there's tape on it, unless you look super close.
I have that noise once every month or so. Glad I found this vid, solves the mystery I think. Mine is a 2011 also and I''m about to fix the window trim too. Appreciated that video as well. Keep them coming.
07 here, my clips just broke & I could not figure out what that was.. the sealant held the piece on. now I have a strip of flexy seal on it. ordering the clips now glad I have the part itself... thanks for the vid keep em coming.. were all playing with these lego trucks.. and i love your green that's badass.
I’ve replaced the windshield twice.. I had a bead of silicone on it but the glass tech removed it 2 years ago, and I’ve got this noise… back to the sealer…😀😀😀😀😀😀
Not at all. Both of mine have the original windshields. (A 2010 & 2014) So they haven't been removed. I don't think it's a big issue. Hopefully yours is good for a long time now. It probably just takes a good windshield repair/replacement guy to get them fastened and sealed correctly.
Subscribed. I have a 2007 WTFJ I love mine as well. A road trip last weekend. 20mph headwinds +90 mph = that will fly off. My replacement just got here today. Thanks for the video. $132 hopefully it’s not crap and I’m going to glue the shit out of it.
I have an '11 FJ too and it started making this noise some time after the front windshield had been replaced. I initially did a test by also using painter's tape, thought the air flow moving up the windshield got in between the trim but was surprised to noticed that it still did it, so then I placed the tape only on the top gap between the trim and the roof and it stopped. Just last week I had it fixed by placing some sealant to fill gap between trim and glass/roof
Windshield replaced today. Previous glass company broke clips and glued the top trim down, which made things more challenging for this recent replacement. Now to buy new clips and fix it myself. The wind noise on the highway is terrible. And tips/videos explaining how to remove the trim without breaking clips?
Just Had my windshield replace and I noticed the upper piece is not flush and the rubber trim is not sticking to the glass. Called the insurance company and they are on it but thanks for this video because if they ask I’ll show them that this will probably happen. 😖
Bring the F.J. back with a small V-8. You should get your F.J. insulated. It would be a good project and as loud as they are it would be a GREAT candidate! I had it done on my 4-Runner and my Tacoma and it is amazing! Every time someone rides in my 4-Runner they freak out on how quiet it is. I had the floor, doors, side panels, roof, and firewall done and it made a MASSIVE difference. So far, 3 people that rode in mine went and had their cars done. If you close your eyes while I am going 40 mph you can't tell my 4-Runner is even moving. There is ZERO floorboard noise or vibration in it now. NO mod will make as big a difference. If you had that F.J. done it would truly blow peoples minds when they rode in it!
@@MaximumDIYGarage I'm glad you asked. o.k. that depends. First I paid two good guys from the San Antonio plant to actually do it. WAIT!!! Stick with me! If your doing it yourself, it's going to depend on first, what brand material you buy. The floor material is different from the door material. In my case, I thought what the Hell, I'm going so I'm going all the way and purchased the best stuff. Obviously, the second part is doing it. o.k., you can pull up videos that show you how to do it. See, what it basically is, is a process of popping clear clips to remove panels. I purchased a bag of clear clips to replace any that might break for something like $27.00. That covered breakage problems. I hired the two guys because they were both taking two week vacations from work and were good friends. The two of them busted it out in 2 days. They both test drove it when they were done and absolutely FREAKED OUT when they test drove it. Since then they have both done the same to their 4Runners and I paid them again to do it to my Tacoma. NO MOD on earth can effect a vehicle more than this!!!! It will BLOW YOUR MIND!!! Looking back, I would have HAPPILY purchased this package when I bought my 4Runner new for $5,000! Ya, I would be fine getting that as a $5,000 option!!!! That's how amazing it is!!! It turns your vehicle into an $80,000 vehicle!!! Why???? Because it's what they do to $80,000 vehicles in the factory!!! The first person to open a business doing this will become very wealthy!!! There is NO MOD that can have HALF the impact on a vehicle that this can have!!! I'm even told there is a spray form so you just pop a spot of a panel loose and just spray it in!! Two guys in a business can easily do 2 vehicles a day. If you had this business I would call you and schedule my other 4Runner and my two other Tacomas happily for...….$4,000 a piece!!!! I would leave your business with a giggle and bump the sale price of my PERFECT condition 85 Toyota truck another...………….I bet $5,000 after someone freaked out on the test drive!! Guys, this is something $80,000 vehicles get in the factory!!!!! OFFER THIS to people with 25-30-35-$45,000 cars and they will LOSE their mind for your services!!!!!!! THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!! Your taking peoples, lets say...……..$26,000 vehicle and giving it an $80,000 treatment for a VERY REASONABLE price!!!!!! I purchased the material and then I paid them $1,000 a piece to do it!!! The past Sunday at church a guy asked me about it because it's been going around. It turns out he owns a Taxi service. He wants his 19 cabs done this way as a way to have a leg up on business. I got him in touch with the two guys I used. One of them called me Monday and said the two of them are going to take two weeks off for vacation this year and do the 19 cabs! He was SO HAPPY and thanking me up and down!! It's a great deal for the two of them and a great deal for the cab!!! The cab owner rode in my 4Runner and he asked me for their phone number less than 2 miles into it!!!!! PEOPLE!!!!!!! OPEN BUSINESSES THAT OFFER THIS!!!! I have 7 Toyota's. I own 5 Tacoma's and 2 4Runners! I will HAPPILY pay you to do the job on my 5 other Toyota's immediately!!!! Open and run a commercial! One where you ride with a customer before the service. Use a gauge to measure the sound for the camera to see. Then do a clip where you measure the sound AFTER you did the service!!! Keep a common vehicle at your business to take potential customers for a ride in...…..a Camry......it's FREAKING SCARY to think what it would do to a Camry! LOL...…..or a Tacoma, 4Runner. Something common to FREAK people out like I do all the time! I get so many offers I have been thinking about paying to build a business and interviewing and then hiring a guy to officially run it for me!!!!! I ALWAYS ask people during a ride "Would you pay me $5,000 to do this to your vehicle?" EVERY SINGLE PERSON SAID YES!!!!!! I would NEVER charge that much!! I just wanted to see how much they liked it!!! THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!! You can be the person to turn their $25,000 vehicle into an $80,000 vehicle!!!!!
Great fix, luckily I haven’t had any issues like that with my FJ... the latest mod I did was put in a new stereo with a front facing camera. So looking forward to using it while off roading.
If you take your time it does come off without breaking. I just removed mine for a water leak issue and didn't break a clip. its a 2007 and has never been off before.
I just purchased a 2012 and I absolutely love it. However that stupid trim piece just flew off for the second time... this time it almost hit someone. Not going to lie, bad designs really piss me off. I've decided not to replace it. Instead, since there are no aftermarket products for this piece, I've decided to make my own and bolt it right to the body.
It the upper Right Clip or Clips. Lots of FJs have this problem. Mine does. Looking for a clase company to change out the clips for me. It has to be New Clips. That all I know. seen this on FJ forms. Hope that helps!
Owning my second FJ, I am well aware of that stupid trim piece, and the even dumber hood cowls. it is the reason that I have been putting off replacing the windshield. It is also the main reason that it's about a $1500 job. Anyway, that piece comes from the factory installed with clips AND the adhesive. Which generally renders it a one time use item, because you basically have to destroy it to get it off. My thought is that the windshield has already been replaced, and whomever did it decided not to glue it in place so they wouldn't have to buy a new one(a Trail Teams paint matched one is about $500) the next time the glass was replaced, and with an FJ that can be a regular thing. I have had to take mine in to get stars repaired three times this year alone. Then yesterday, I drove up to Wyoming for work and a huge gust of wind ripped the upper trim piece off.... So it looks like I am getting a new windshield after all.
I have a ‘12 TRD and it’s doing the same thing. Thank you for this video. I’m going to try what you did to see if it eliminates the howling noise. Many mechanics I’ve gone to haven’t even been able to find the problem. Any updates/suggestions before I start the project?
I found those on Amazon for $70 bucks new. Clips where $8 bucks for a pack of 8pcs Which really all you need really was new clips. So it would of really cost you $8 bucks.
I am dealing with an issue with my 2007 FJ right now where there appears to be a grinding noise coming from the window or dashboard when I get up to about 65 or 70 mph
The local place that I went said a tube of the windshield adhesive was $50 plus a little bit of labor. This is still holding up for me! Good luck and let me know how it goes!
Bandit Off-road I plan to take it to a windshield shop and show them the video. Hopefully that will be my fix as well. I wonder if this is a issue from the factory on many of the FJ’s ?
I've had wind noise right after I removed the cross bars on my roof rack and put it on backwards. There's an arrow on the crossbar that points to the front of the vehicle. Once I turned it around the wind noise stopped.
Wow, mine just started doing this. I drove 600 miles from NC to Florida with this noise and I'm glad you addressed this. Thank you.

So it's a trim issue instead of window issue? I thought it was the windshield sealing issue

Mine started making that noise and stopped suddenly, didn't think much of it until I came home and noticed the piece is missing.
I had this issue, and i used silicone sealing. Its did the job now two years.
Can u explain what you did or pic?
How did u do that?
Oh my gosh life changing
07 here, my clips just broke & I could not figure out what that was.. the sealant held the piece on. now I have a strip of flexy seal on it. ordering the clips now glad I have the part itself... thanks for the vid keep em coming.. were all playing with these lego trucks.. and i love your green that's badass.

Thanks, I really am enjoying it! Have you ever had any issues with the windshield trim?

Agreed, the Trail Teams Green is stunning. Saw one in black that was pretty bad ass too

Most definitely have an issue, I have own my FJ SINCE 2007. Never had that issue.

No it all held up great! Just make sure you give time for the sealant to harden before you drive your FJ. Good luck and congrats on your awesome FJ!
Love the roof lights. Pretty cool and trucky
She's a beauty! I've never had that issue with mine.

My bro, my FJ has the same issue. The noise it makes when driving is insane. It sounds like the car is falling apart which I guess it kinda is. 😆
You have an invisible bumblebee in your car lol 😂
Lol, it's awful! Sounds like vuvuzelas at a soccer match!
We now have a whistling noise after having the windshield replaced
Mine flew of yesterday going about 70 on the highway im ordering a new one but i have an all black trd edition so ill have to paint it
Mine has flown off before, too
Mine does the same thing, but not always. I have to be going 60 plus.
Same...and with mine it is more of a grinding noise
How much did it cost to get this resolved? And who did you use? Ty in advance. I’m having the same issue, really annoying
The local place that I went said a tube of the windshield adhesive was $50 plus a little bit of labor. This is still holding up for me! Good luck and let me know how it goes!
Bandit Off-road ty
Which glass company did you use?
What exactly did you ask the glass company to do?
Its a unique vehicle but at the end of the day its a toy. I really wanted one but not after ive seen the price
What are those zit bumps on your roof top.
What are the bumps up on the roof there?
The previous owner added cab lights
Mine does it at 70mph but only when it is windy outside. So strange.
It is strange, maybe your trim piece is more securely fastened to the vehicle. This fix has been holding up on mine though!
Bandit Off-road I plan to take it to a windshield shop and show them the video. Hopefully that will be my fix as well. I wonder if this is a issue from the factory on many of the FJ’s ?

Glad you fixed the problem, still jealous as hell! That would look really good next to my Tacoma! *wink wink* lol
Hey we can go to the mall and be bros anytime! Lol
How much was the fix?
The glass shop near me just charged me $50, I thought that was more than reasonable!
